2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
I have been a trainer for many years, and am currently working towards becoming a behaviorist - and I can tell you that Paul Owens offers nothing new to the world of dog training. This book is an average (at best) compilation of training techniques discovered and perfected by other (professional) dog trainers/behaviorists. I've read many, many books on dog training and behavior and this is one not worth purchasing. If you're looking for an interesting read to learn more about how dogs think and why they act the way they do - check out any of Stanley Coren's books (he has many). If you're looking for training techniques - take a class. Honestly, there is nothing better for a dog than to go to puppy classes (with a respectable and knowledgable trainer) where they can be properly socialized and trained. If your dog is having serious behavior issues - consult a professional animal behaviorist. Your veterinarian should be able to refer you to somebody. Good luck!
5-0 out of 5 stars Owner of a Difficult Dog
We tried all the tricks from bribes to choke chains and Paul Owen's method REALLY WORKS. Not only is my dog happier with me for teaching her usng a kind method, I am happier too because my dog really listens to me. This book is the best.

2-0 out of 5 stars CLICKER TRAINING
Sorry, but I'm just not a fan of clicker training or the concept of waiting around *ho hum* until your dog happens to do something that you want it to do. Granted, there is some helpful advice given within the pages of this book, but I'm very glad I didn't pay regular retail for it. (Yay, Amazon!) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This is a moving book about a man and his encounters with different dogs throughout his life. His observations on how people don't even notice homeless dogs around is a stark reality. You're often torn with what to do when you happen upon a loose dog not knowing whether it's a stray or lost and I just hope I can do the right thing the next time.I love that he gives voice to the bad rap that pits get.I found myself unable to put this book down.I hope this author continues to write as I know he will probably continue to rescue dogs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved This Book
I read this book in about a day and 1/2.I loved it.I have 2 rescued dogs myself and cannot even imagine my life without them.I would recommend this book to anyone. The only thing was I wish that Mr. Foster would have put some pictures of his 3 dogs in the book.My imagination told me what Brando, Zephyr and Sula looked like but I would have like to see them in photos.
5-0 out of 5 stars The truth about pitbulls and their reputation
What a wonderful book, This book had me laughing and crying and every emotion in between. This book represents everything every dog lover wants to do. But in reality don't for whatever reason. It shows me the good side to people when in this world today you really don't see to often.(If ever)This book will touch the heart strings of you, friends, and anyone you know that thinks of a dog (any dog) as a family member, friend, lifelong companion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars finally a scientifically oriented hobby book
I was surprised and overjoyed that this book approached the coral keeping hobby from a scientific standpoint.Being a marine biologist myself, it was a breath of fresh air in a hobby flooded with information that has been dumbed down for the masses.I highly recommend it, even if you only look at the pictures, it will come in handy someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome reference
This book is a must-have for anyone truly interested in keeping domestic corals and their kin.It is a steal for the price, and filled with excellent images. It contains superior taxonomic and nomenclature information, making it easy to understand which animals belong in which genus. It helped me identify many of my hitch-hikers.It includes toxicology of the animals, including their threat level to aquarists and other animals.Vivid diagrams on octocoral and stony coral anatomy (and words in bold print) make it a bit like a text book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best resource on corals and reef-keeping
When I first became interested in reef keeping and began researching it, I visited a neighbor who had recently spent a lot of money setting up his first tank.I asked if there were any books he could recommend. He had purchased several but said that the information in them all was rather dated. He suggested instead that the internet was a better source for more recent and up-to-date information. And while I've since decided that the internet is also a big source of "myth-information" on the hobby, I'd have to agree that many of the books I've seen are seriously out-dated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
The perfect book for the novice marine aquarium enthusiast.Step by step it tells you how to set up a number of salt water aquariums both small and large with alternative methods of filtration. It also covers which fish do well for the beginner and how they get along with each other. The writing is clear and concise, and when I finished reading and got started with my first tank, there wasn't a single thing I encountered that wasn't covered in the book.Great start for your first tank.Pick this one up.

4-0 out of 5 stars An ok starter...
This book was an ok starter book, but does not delve into great diagnostic detail. I had to purchase another booh for that.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for begginers
I think this book is great for beginners. It really teaches you the basics of the hobby. How to enjoy your aqaurium and stick with it, because it is a hobby that many have lost interest and given up on, due to impatience.

5-0 out of 5 stars everybody's happy
I adopted two puppies at the same time and have been using this book to train them. They are now 5 months old. My husband and I can pick a lesson and we both see the correct way to teach the pups. By each of us following the same recipe, the pups are learning rapidly and aren't confused by each of us having our "own"way to train them. The pups are always happy to see the clicker come out and my husband and I are having lots of fun, as this is the first time we have dogs that actually do tricks! One of the best investments we have made since we got the puppies.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent sequel toFound Dogs : Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet
I originally bought Found Dogs : Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet and fell in love with the book. One of our kids Miles is a rescue dog and I can definitely relate to the stories in that book and this sequel.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Dog Lover's Joy
This book was given to a special friend that loves dogs so much she adopted one. Her dog brings her much happiness and their story could be included in this sweet book. I recommend it for all dog lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars AIR GUITAR HEAVEN FOR MY 5, 6 & 8 YEAR OLDS. THEY LOVE THIS CD/BOOK - ROCK ON!
I almost can't believe that some reviewers are so critical. My kids don't know the writer/illustrator from a hole in the wall -- but I have to re-play the Bacon Brother's "Pots and Pans" and that other hot rockin' tune that has something to do with broccoli(eieieieie!) over and over.My three kids have formed their own backseat air guitar/drums/whatever band, they've memorized the lyrics, they're getting along and, when I gaze back at them, they're NOT brain frozen, dull eyed focussed on a little screen tv watching a video.Movin' and Groovin', baby.I love it, so do they. ROCK ON, DOG TRAIN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rejoice, Boomers.Rock 'n' Roll is hear!
Tired of listening to your G'childs "Wee-sings" & Raffi? Do we really have to listen to these again...& again & again
5-0 out of 5 stars Great sequel!
This book delivered exactly what I expected from a sequel to Philadelphia Chickens and Rhinoceros Tap (as well as Pigorian Chants). The kids just love it and the songs and music are good to listen to for adults as well. While they can be silly, they are contemporary and inspire, rather than grind on your nerves like some other kids song books. Definitely worth a look and listen many times over. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Imperfect but a Great Start!!!
I purchased this book in an effort to make good on the commitment I made to my hulking 5th wife. She (Bessie) has been increasingly difficult to manage and in general, a bit of an overweight wild bronco.I, semi-correctly, thought this book would help.I note the following from the book's description:
4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.
I am reading books on horsemanship.I had seleted various authors and cooresponding trainers. Each offer styles that work. Each are similiar. The difference is the preentation of the material. I have a dog and have brought him back from the meanest one I ever owned. He was abused and he has found a very loving home. He is no longer mean, showing his teeth on every approach. The things I see in horse training are very similiar to how I work with dogs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new horse owner
I am new to riding and just recently bought a horse. This book, together with "How Your Horse Wants You to Ride," has been a great help to make sense of all the well-meaning advice and my observations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Puppy Book
Every single thing that we read in this book was useful, and worked too!I would highly recommend this book over any other for training any puppy, any breed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book -- not enough detail and too superficial
When I adopted my puppy, this book was recommended to me.I dutifully went out and bought it.As I was reading it, it had many suggestions for what you should do but no tangible examples of implementing those suggestions. For example, they might say "don't hit your puppy with a rolled up newspaper" however they don't necessarily give you a reasonable alternative.I believe this to be more of a function of the editing by the "dummies" staff than a reflection on the author. In what I can only interpret as his own editorial comment on the book, my puppy proceeded to pee on this book -- needless to say, after that we threw it out.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, but By No Means A Complete Reference
I just want to lay out that no one book covers everything. A blend of various resources must be examined when venturing out into puppy-ownership-land. This book is good to acquaint you with the basics: assessing your lifestyle, gearing yourself (and family) up for owning a puppy, doing your homework on the breed, where to buy, what to get for the puppy (and your home)puppy stages, common problems, helpful tactics and solutions to said problems and fun stuff: training, games and commands. This book or the Complete Idiot's Guides are fine for this. I also recommend, like others, The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
I love these type of memoirs. A person who is not boasting about their skill or having an attitude. Simply shares the love of his work and love of his county. All of James Herriot's books are wonderfull. I was introduced to the children's books a few years ago and just recently started reading his memoirs. Love it, some parts were a bit dry but the books still flowed well and drew you back. Love the depth of scenery and anicdotes about the area. Recommend any book of his.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This was a great book. I decided to read it because I like animals, and I'm so glad I did. I loved this book; it was really funny and exciting. I am definitaly going to read more of his books and watch the tv show if it's ever on anymore. I think triston is hilarious. I would reccomend reading this; it was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all
I'm mostly a fantasy scifi guy but I'm also an animal lover and I picked up this book on a whim. I wound up reading all the books in the series and ended up loving them all and wishing there were more. This guy can really write and tell a story. What a gifted man. Great Vet and Writer. 5-0 out of 5 stars From Problems to Profits Succeeds
This is the definitive book on the "business side" of grooming. Why another reviewer here would say to refer to Notes From The Grooming Table doesn't make sense. It's a great book on the "how to groom side" of grooming and is not a book on the business side of grooming at all. From Problems to Profits for the business side of grooming and Notes for the styling side of grooming and you have the best of the best today.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless for House Call or Mobile Grooming
I was recommended this book by grooming board but I found it totally useless for the mobile groomer or house call groomer. The book called "Notes from the Grooming Table" is a much better investment for the groomer in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best for grooming.
I visited the office of this author today and asked if I could write a review, and they put me online here so here I am. At first I thought this book was the biography of the author. It's not. It's her system she used to go from a tiny salon to a major pet salon. No matter how small or large a grooming shop you want, you can do it. I was so impressed look at me, I came to visit the author and what a warm welcome I was given. I bet her 5,000 pet owner clients loved her as much as me. This is a classic and many books on how to for any type of service business could take a lesson from the format of this book. If you are going to own a grooming small or large there are so many gems of info in this book. I am so impressed and feel so great about my future as a grooming business owner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject of animal afterlife!
This book reassured me of what I already believed in my heart that the animals would be in Heaven.Niki examines the original meanings of many words in Scripture. For example, 'soul' and 'spirit' and proves that they pertain to "all flesh", not just humans. For example 'soul' means "soul or a breathing creature".'Every living thing' means "every living thing, man and animal."This book is packed full of much more amazing information like this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Assured Me That I would See My Cat, Adam, Again
About 3 years ago my beloved cat, Adam, died after 15 wonderful years.Naturally I wanted to know where he was heading. I ordered your book online, and you even signed a little note inside.Thank you for your words of comfort.Your book truly was an inspiration, and assured me that Adam was in a better place, and that I would see him again. Since his passing, I have had a girlfriend who has lost 2 cats in a few month span, and I lent her this book.I have not received it back if that tells you anything :)She rants and raves of how the book got her through her tough times, and I agree. Niki, thank you so much for writing such an inspiring book, and know you truly are an angel:)
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful feeling to know I'll see my fur-kids again someday!
I just finished your book, There is Eternal Life For Animals.I discovered many verses in the Bible I either didn't know existed or looked at them in a new light. I didn't just read your book, but I studied it, carefully examining every word. What a wonderful feeling to know I wil see my fur-kids" again someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow, blissful tears....
I was afraid to order this book at first because I am such a huge animal lover and get very distressed when I hear stories about animals who have been abused or abandoned. I literally get nightmares when I read about animals who are suffering and I wasn't sure if this book would be more upsetting then pleasurable since I knew many of the dogs would have tragic tales before adoption. My experience with this book: got it today, sat down on the sofa with it and simply could not put it down. I read every story and even though many of them were tragic they really didn't dwell on the horrific past in a way that made me uncomfortable. I did cry but they were slow, blissful tears that often melted into the edges of an unforseen smile. These stories are some of the most uplifting, gorgeous stories I have ever read and the photos that accompany them are beautiful, often spontaneous portraits of owners embracing their saved animals. In every furry face you can see the joy and the gratitude and the extinguished pain. They are saved and they are home and it burns your eyes and warms your heart and leaves you shivering in goose pimples. I am SO glad I decided to order this book! It's a must have for anyone who loves dogs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dog Book Out There!
This is the one book that I recommend to everyone, have multiple copies of, consult daily, and donated to my local library. There are a lot of good, helpful books out there with humane, dog-friendly techniques - but this one tops the list!
5-0 out of 5 stars Goof Proof Your Clicking
What a great way to see what potential you have for correcting a mistake before you do it. I am training two pups at once. Sure enough, as soon as one of them gets it, the other does too. So, if I make a mistake they will both learn it. This book handles the individuality of each dog and lets you see ways to better your abilities by zeroing in on potential problems before they occur. I am using it with the excellent Clicking with your Dog book and think the set makes a perfect combination for the joy of clickertraining. Also, little hints like what kind of treats to use, alternates to food, etc. make this full of useful surprises. Also, the advice on how to make the behavior "perfect" lets you know how far to push each activity before moving on to the next. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent training book!
This book is excellent in every way.Melissa Alexander writes in a style that is both substantial and understandable and this is one of the most user-friendly books I have ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Story, but -
"Mostly Bob" is the heartfelt story about how a mangy, anti-social, and neglected neighbor's dog adopted the author upon the death of his own dog - Bubba.First Bob just came over for a few minutes, then he began staying - without encouragement or food.Bob would go home at 6 P.M. for his dinner bowl, and return at 6:05.After awhile Bob began following the author (Tom), and lie down outside the door nearest Tom.Then Bobbegan enjoying petting.
