5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read
This was very easy to read and extremely informative book.Couldn't put it down until I finished it.
5-0 out of 5 stars John Lyons IS the best horse in the paddock!
As a professional horse trainer who lives her craft, I give John Lyons a TON of credit for making me the horsewoman I am today. John is known as America's Most Trusted Horseman and I'll take it a step further and call him the guy who writes THE how-to books on training. John's not a bells and whistles kind of guy, just one heck of a great trainer. If you purchase only one book on horse training, I suggest this reasonably priced book that beautiflly illustrates how John builds a foundation of trust and respect. If you are able to apply the basic principles illustrated, you will be able to improve any horse, regardless of age or experience - and I mean that for both you and your horse. The book features 20 progressive ground-work lessons to develop your horse into a reliable, accepting partner. I Give It 4 Hooves Up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have this book and have used some of the things in it. It's not really what I need for my horse. She's two, really hyper, green and distracted. The instruction in the book is great. I just needed more of a detailed...do this, this might happen, fix it like this...book. I'm new at this. She's the first horse I've tried to train. I've been around horses for most of my life but training is alot different I'm learning. I have a new baby horse on the way though and I know this will be an invaluable resource for training her(or him). Along with Dr. Miller's Imprint Training. I would recommend this book. But I have really found alot of help in Clinton Anderson's new book. With all these books combined my horse and I are doing good and I know we'll both learn alot. It's a good book and valuable addition to anyone's library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read This Book
This book is very helpful for managing a household with multiple dogs. The author gives specific advice as to how to handle dogs, while not ignoring the needs of the group.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL, VERY SPECIFIC IDEAS for training people & dogs
The author McConnell gets right to the heart of the matter: EVERY movement, EVERY word you say IS noticed by the dogs.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Intro
This is a good place to start for those with multiple-dog households. It serves as a great consolidation of multi-dog topics from other books, many of which I have also read. The authors have done a great job of referencing the topics, so if you want to learn more, it is easy to pick out the longer book that most applies to that topic. I found it very helpful in teaching me how to train my dogs together (seperately), as well as defining what is play and when it's time to cool off. It's a good reference to have on hand when you just need a quick review of pack dynamics, and don't have the time to sift through a longer book for the information that you're looking for. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on dog behavior
This book is an excellent guide to dog behavior and, although not being a training manual, it includes a lot of information on how to train your dog. Apart from discussing how dogs learn (e.g. by observation, classical conditioning, or operant conditioning), it includes a short list of "canine learning" rules and an appendix that teaches you how to teach commands, as well as how to correct behavior problems by counter-conditioning (training him to do something else instead of its undesirable behavior) and desensitization (teaching him to accept the stimuli that cause unacceptable behavior).
5-0 out of 5 stars Well written book, enjoyable and informative
This book helps me communicate with my dog better through understanding what my dog's thought process. It's not a training book but what you learn from it is much more valuable than other training books in a lot of ways!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Western Riders too
Even though I ride western, 101 Dressage Exercises has helped me create more lift and forward motion in my horse while retaining flexion. I especially liked the chapters describing different stretches and massages beneficial to your horse. I also recently bought the author's DVD, which is also really helpful. It goes into more depth regarding work-in-hand, and helped me pay closer attention to my horse's muscular development.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dressage Exercises
Yes there are 101 excercises, but no instruction on weight distribution and rein contact. It is mearly a list of things to do such that on a sleepless night I could come up with the same patterns. I would use it for ideas in a class so that I could keep things fresh.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as 101 jumping exercises
This book is a great help to plan and diversify flat work and seriously move forward in dressage. But it lacks the step by step progression plan that, in my view, makes 101 jumping exercises so much better than this one. It tells you what exercises to do, but not how to teach your horse how to do them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only puppy book you'll ever need
This is the friendliest how-to book I've ever seen. For example, at the end of the semi-scientific chapter on how to test a puppy's personality and temperament, it points out that people have been raising puppies for thousands of years without formal tests. It instantly restored my faith in my home-grown skills while giving me more to think about.Read it at any depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Puppy Book Ever!
I purchased this book 15 years ago with my puppy Major.I followed its advice and he was a wonderful dog. When I recently purchased a new puppy Nala - I bought it again and we have started the training they recommend.Very concise and easy to read!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars European view
From european point of view the drawback of the book is that it describes the tasks of american rules for obedience trial. As we in europe have different set of tasks in our obedience trial the book did not fill the need for specific instructions on those tasks. I was also looking for more structured and simplified clear instructions in the book things are more of discussed through. Still the book was worth the money paid for it. It has lots of grounds for why to do this way. The basics of the book is fluencies on what the obedience tasks are based on and those same fluencies are still usefull with european rules too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective!Intentionally short.
Patricia McConnell knows how little time many of us have which is why she makes this series of books only 30 or so pages long. She is direct and to the point to solve your training problem without lots of fluff and cute little dog stories. When we have a dog training issue very few of us have time to read a novel on how to solve it. I for one want to cut to the chase and start solving the problem right away. The methods used in this book are clear and easy to apply and they work.My dog has stopped destructive chewing when I'm away and is clearly much happier.Thank you Ms. McConnell (oh and Daisy my APBT thanks you too) A few reviewers gave these books a low rating because they are short. Amazon clearly indicates how many pages this book has and it's priced accordingly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Dogs is BIG on Fun and Information for ALL Dog Owners!
Little Dogs by Deborah Wood took me by great surprise. I purchased the book expecting entertainment with some basic tips, but what I received was exciting, tangible tips and exercises to help me bond and understand my new puppy. I learned A LOT about what makes her the way she is and different things she is communicating to me and not just doing for no reason or because she doesn't know any better! I gained so much patience and confidence in working with her thanks to this book. We now grow together and I am able to allow her to teach me things about myself, too. The book is so well written and the layout of short chapters filled to the brim with tips and facts, lets me read an entire section and set it down to work and play with my puppy. All of the information is well backed up by facts and explains not just WHAT to do, but WHY. It even goes as far as telling you WHY NOT to do other things. It's not all work, either! It's a great read on its own and even my husband has finished it off. We find ourselves quoting the book as reminders or help in explaining certain behaviors our puppy exhibits. This book is just what we needed and we will be keeping it in arm's reach for a long time! Highly recommended for owners of all breeds and sizes of dogs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
God honest truth, I never saw Amy Tan's praise for this book until it reached my hands. And I have to say, she's right. From the poo eating, to the "armpit piranah's", to the gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous cover! Yes... In truth the cover lured me, and thankfully the contents have proven even more worthy. Especially love all the tricks and tips on flying with your precious baby, and training the little scroundrels. Cheers!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not necessary
I don't really think that the pint-sized dog warranteed a book of its own. I cannot see that the training is any different from the others I have read. Wonderful smile-inducing calendar...High quality paper with great photos(larger than most page-a-day calendars; each page measures 6 X 7 inches). 5-0 out of 5 stars Best quality page-a-day I've found!
I really like my 2006 Dog Gallery Page-A-Day Calendar. The pictures are great, they're larger than most page-a-day pictures and printed on quality paper, and each picture is accompanied by a line or two of doggy insight.I like the plastic holder that allows shifting of each day's photo to the back of the stack instead of the tear-off type calendars that require regular peeling off of binding that remains after each page is removed.Because it is larger than most page-a-day calendars, people with limited desk space may find it a bit cumbersome but I love it!I will purchase this item every year.(TO WORKMAN PUBLISHING: Perhaps you could make only the calendar pages available to those of us who already have the plastic holder?) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, entertaining, a great read!
As a big Paulson fan this book was a great read. Gary provides an insight into the iditarod that only Gary can do. You will feel the cold, share his pain and truley feel you are running the race with him. Gary's love of his dogs and nature come through in this book. Anyone who wants an entertraining lesson on the iditarod, must read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughing all the way
My husband read this book first. He constantly interrupted whatever I was doing to read it aloud because he was enjoying it so much. Finally, so that he would leave me alone, I agreed to read a chapter. All I can say is that a book has never made me laugh out loud like this one did.We both laughed until tears were running down our cheeks! I am so glad that my husband has never had any inclination to run the Iditarod like Paulsen did. I'm sure that if he had, the results would have been as hilarious as Paulsen's experiences. It's funny enough just to see my husband pack up to go duck hunting with our two Labs.As he drives off with the dogs disagreeing about who will get to sit up front, I am always reminded of the Three Stooges, but instead of Larry, Curly, and Moe, it's Stan, Daisy, and Buddy.

The number of excellent reviews for this book reflect the application to riders of all levels and disciplines. 5-0 out of 5 stars Think Like A Horse?
Great book. Bought it for my 14-year-old who thinks she knows it all. She has learned some interesting facts and applies that to her own horse. It has made her understand the horse instead of just reacting. Highly recommended for any level horse rider. You will learn at least one thing you didn't know before you picked up this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for every discipline by www.horselogic.net
I highly recommend this book to all of my lesson students.I strongly feel that it helps the to progress more smoothly, and also have less "plateaus".I feel that any rider regardless of their chosen discipline should read this book.It really explains the principles behind riding correctly. This was a book that I was required to purchase and read at the equestrian university I attended.Again I highly recommend this book.It is easy to read and easy to understand. Plus it has very good illustrations to clarify points.I hope this review is helpful.www.horselogic.net

2-0 out of 5 stars Boutiful imagery ultimately fails illuminate.
I got this book after many glowing reviews by others and also on the recommendation of my coach, and after reading it cover to cover several times and really trying the exercises, this book is unfortunately consigned to the dusty corner of my shelf..

5-0 out of 5 stars My sparrow can now talk
I hate those pesky birds that poop all over my car so one day I set a trap and caught one of the blighters, a sparrow to be exact. My intention was to give him to the crows to eat but I happened to come across this rather interesting book and took it upon myself to see what results I could get. The logic was that if I could teach him to speak I could tell him I wasn't happy with his kind pooping on my car and he would then tell his buddies that I was not happy and bring an end to that rather messy behaviour. Anyway, after trying the book out for 2 weeks I was able to teach the bird over 400 words..AMAZING. I was able to ascertain that the sparrow was in fact a practicing Hindu who was a cow in the previous life and a trappist monk before that..he was hoping to be turned into a dog in the next life as they get treated better than humans on this planet (except in Korea) and he was sick of being treated like crap. Great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Your Bird to Talk
When I bought this book I thought I was buying a book that would help me teach my parrot to talk. Although I do know that there are no guarantees about which bird will talk and what method works, I wanted tips and advice on how to help my parrot learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book has good basic information for the beginner in bird care or ownership as well as advanced information.
Two authors have teamed up to write this book titled Teaching Your Bird to Talk. The two of them have plenty of experience with birds.

5-0 out of 5 stars USPC Manual - Beginning Level
I am a beginning & intermediate horseback riding instructor in Moscow, ID. I have found the Pony Club Manual for beginners to be a very helpful teaching tool - the illustrations are helpful and well-labeled, and the layout is easy to follow. The information is widely accepted as correct, and the text is well-written for the 10-15 year old ages. I include a manual in the price of all my beginning horse camps for 10-14 year olds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pony Club Manual
This is the an excellent introduction for anyone interested in horsemanship. It can be studied prior to joining the United States Pony Club or serve as a usful tool in teaching or improving horsemanship for the young or beginning equestrian.
