5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful teacher
The following is a copy of an email I sent to Kelly recently.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful and Immensely Enjoyable
As an Equine (and Human) Therapist, I have to connect with horses in a professional setting quickly in order to do my job effectively whereby the horse can gain the most benefit in a limited amount of time. While there is definitely an innate ability one either does or does not possess in connecting with animals, Ms. Marks can help hone your skills and teach you safer horse handling. This helps make the horse feel more secure in your presence.A horse that feels safe will act safely.I feel strongly that even the most advanced horseman can benefit from reading it and have placed it on my "recommended reading" list at horseholistics.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!
If you could only buy one horse book, this would be it! This is a "must have" for all horse owners - I cannot stress this enough. I have read several books, but this one is my ultimate favorite and stands above the rest. We need more writers like Kelly Marks who truly understand the nature of the horse and how to handle and care for them humanely. If you do not own this book, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. You will be so amazed with the knowledge you will gain. For example, for behavior problems, this book teaches you to understand what your horse is trying to tell you, and to look to yourself for the answer, instead of looking for that quick, possibly inhumane, solution. She wants you to ask yourself, "Why is my horse doing this," as this is an important basis to determine a solution. Her psychological perspective will knock you off your socks. Not only will you have fun learning about your horse, but you will also have fun learning neat facts about yourself. She also provides excellent exercises that will help you to successfully build a wonderful relationship with your horse. There is so much important information in this book that you do not want to miss. Please read it; you and your horse will be so happy you did. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, complete, scientifically correct.
I like this book because I know the author, the veterinary professor under which she researched, and the scientific studies that support her work. Many of the books on breeding are written by people with far less experience and understanding of the reproductive system and the estrous cycle in bitches, and simply propitiate old, outdated information. This book is not only thorough, written so a complete novice can understand, and covers everything from making the choice to breed to placing the puppies, but it is also dependably ACCURATE. It's the only book I trust from cover to cover. Should be required reading for every dog breeder!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable!
I always reread Phyllis Holst's wonderful book every time I breed a litter and have it at my side during whelping. Its pages are thick with 'postit' bookmarks. The advice is concise, but still detailed -- the perfect book for the first-time breeder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
If you've EVER thought of breeding, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU! Explains EVERYTING, including problems you may encounter, things you never expected, BUT SURPRISE! and THIS BOOK COVERS THEM! I use it as my bible, and wouldn't have a litter without it by my side.I have the others, and they sit in mylibrary. This book is an absolute MUST. It is a Wonderful, easy tounderstand, most complete guide to breeding. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I never knew...
I have this romantic notion that one day I will retire from the Army, settle down somewhere nice, and tend my bee hives filled with gentle bees, reaping in gallons of sweet, liquid gold.Like I said, it's a romantic notion. What this book clearly states is that there is more to successfully operating an apiary than harvesting the honey a few times a year. It's science and agriculture. It's care and preservation. It's timing and careful planning. But this book didn't scare me away from my notions, rather it provided me with the critical information I'll need to successfully care for my own colony of bees.I get excited just thinking about the possibilities. The book is clearly laid out, informative, and comprehensive in scope.I recommend it for a beginner, like me, or someone who wants a good, well-rounded resource guide on beekeeping.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good resource, but not the bee all, end all...
I used this book as my only reference for starting my career as a backyard beekeeper. I find it very helpful and it is a good reference but it's also rather incomplete.I got my bees in Nucs not boxes and there wasn't much that a beginner needed to understand the differences. Also, when I checked my hives for the first time, I realized that this book is lacking a lot of what looks normal and what doesn't; there are only a few photos, mostly not very useful. Why doesn't the book tell you to smoke yourself and the bees to help prevent stings? Why isn't there info about using sugar water in addition to smoke to help you when in the hive? Now that I'm started I wish that there was a volume II with more detail to help me at the next level.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners book
This is a great "first" book. It is excellent for explaining the parts of a hive, terminology, etc., in a very readable manner, and I love the cartoons. But you must also read other books as well. The more you read, the more you'll be able to separate "opinion" from "hard fact." "The New Starting Right with Bees" etc. are excellent first-year companions to "Beekeeping for Dummies." If you start with this book, you'll be on your way; if you stop with it, you will be in a sorry state. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable practice reference
Nyland's Veterinary Diagnostic Ultrasound is an invaluable addition to my hospital library.I was initially introduced to this volume as a fourth-year Veterinary Student in Radiology/Ultrasound.After graduation,I made sure to purchase a personal copy for reference in private practice. It is filled with easy-to-understand illustrations of different imagingviews of the heart and abdominal organs.I recommend keeping a copy ofNyland within easy reach of the clinic ultrasound for quick-referenceduring scans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, detailed, practical
One can appreciated the authors' long experience with marine aquaria who elegantly and with simple language explained larger biological concepts yet provide detailed instructions on how do to what and why. Very inspiring are the suggested biotopes that include among others "seagrass aquarium", "reef gorge aquarium", "pizza anemone aquarium", "rubble zone aquarium" as well as the standard reef tank. These are refreshing ideas that are needed with the current predominance of grocery store shelf-like stocked, overcrowded best-of-the-month SPS tanks. Also contains a comprehensive guide about most creatures possible in a reef tank and essentially makes e.g. Sprung's "Quick" guides unnecessary in one's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Think out of the box
You won't have to go over the ammonia cycle again here, though there is enough info to get you started. The title is a great indication of what to expect. This book is about thinking out of the box in aquarium keeping and planning them correctly.
5-0 out of 5 stars another great microcosum publication

3-0 out of 5 stars Ehh
This was my first experience with the "for dummies" books; I must say I was a litte disappointed. The information was good, but I guess I was just looking for a little more of it.Now that I have started an aquarium, looking back, it seems that some of the areas were really not covered in as much depth as I would have liked.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too fishy
As with all "for Dummies" books there are no color pictures to examine when the author keeps refering to them...and this book is no different. The only difference is that from the way the author talks I don't think he knew that this book would be published with only black & white photos. Keeps discribing the color of something and refering to a picture. Oh well. Lots of good and useful information, however it is alot to digest. But this is saltwater aquarium care and it can be very intimidating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Primer. The Only Marine Tank Book You Need
I first want to contradict some of the other reviews on this page. This is a great book for the beginner.I used it and followed it to the T same goes for two of my friends. We have all had successful and healthy tanks for well over a year. This book will touch all the basics.Once you learn those you will then know the terminology and concepts and be able to find any other information you need for free, on the web.It is also very previlent in the marine fish hobby to learn conflicting information.Much of the care of fish really requires observation what one person claims solves the problem may not be the best for another with a different setup and different fish.Keep this in mind when you do run into so said "contradictions" that other reviewers have claimed to exist.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use parts to train toy dogs.
I first read several of his books in 1979. Once you get the main concepts ofhis training methods, itcan be used on any dog. I have a papillon so of course I do not use the attack or guard training portion. But his methods of getting dogs to walk on heal without a lease or to come under all conditions is kind, not cruel. I am an avid reader, so I have read hundreds of dog training books, none get to the essence of training like Koehler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Koehler Method of Guard Dog Training
An excellent book.I have use it to train my Dobermans and German Shepherds with excellent results. All of my dogs have turned out to be very reliable and well adjusted and have never failed to respond to command. For those who feel that some of the methods are "outdated", consider that almost all police agencies, and the armed forces still use his methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the weak-willed or overly sentimental,BUT...
neither are big dogs. It's important to remember that this particular book is aimed at training large aggressive breeds. Yes, you can get your poodle to sit and stay and fetch using other methods. But this is a method for making sure your hundred pound Rottweiler obeys you when failure can mean tragedy. I've trained every one of my dogs using this book's methods. I've had German Sheperds, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and Filas. Every one of them has responded perfectly to the training. I'm not a breeder or a professional trainer, but my dogs' obedience has been equal to or better than any of the trained dogs that I've encountered. Some of the methods aren't pleasant; training soldiers for combat isn'tusually a pleasant process, either. But the point of effective training isn't the trainer's assuaging his or her Inner Child; it's about developing RELIABLE control over a potentially lethal animal. The huggy-wuggy here's-a-puppy treat methods don't work when the animal is under strong external stimulation. Not a week goes by that I don't see the failure of the "kindhearted" methods, just in the course of walking my dog in the local parks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Horses for Dummies
This is a great book.I liked the content and was able to get good advice on riding and taking care of my horse. It had been some time since I had ridden a horse and the review was very good for me.This book is great for beginners or advanced riders.

4-0 out of 5 stars BACK IN THE SADDLE...FOR THE FIRST TIME!
HORSES FOR DUMMIES does an excellent job of introducing the horse lover to the ins and outs of horses and horse ownership. The book paints a fairly accurate picture of all that is involved in getting started, covering the gamut of gadgets and tack necessary, a variety of veterinary issues, housing, feeding, training...you name it. A good, sound preliminary overview.

Good for bringing new dogs into your family. A must to read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting ready for baby
This book was recommended at a veterinary conference in Kansas City ... I work at a small animal hospital, and I was looking for a book to recommend to our clients when they are preparing for a new baby.I was hoping for more information, however, about problems that parents should expect between their child and the dog as the child grows up.This book presents realistic training ideas and other options (rehoming, euthanasia) for dogs that just should not be around kids, and also suggests when the owner should seek professional help.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book!
We bought this to help us train our two newly rescued rat terriers to accept our grandchildren. They had some very good advice on introducing dogs to children, etc. that we have already used. Hopefully, by the time they visit, they will be more socialized to children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
This book was very helpful but still going to have to bring this crazy dog to classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for the Price
I bought this book since it had such a low price and the reviews were good, even though there were only a few reviews on it. I found it very informative and it makes a lot of sense. I do not have my puppy yet to see if the suggestions work, but I will definately be following it once I do get the puppy. It is pretty basic though, telling you how to teach sit, stay, come, and heel, plus has chapters dedicated to dog problems such as barking, jumping, and so forth. It focuses mainly on clicker training, and also goes over crate training for housebreaking. I would have preferred more pictures to illustrate the different things talked about, and maybe a couple of sample forms to give you examples of the logs to keep for training and all, but those are not all that necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Dog Training Books
I highly recommend Gerilyn J. Bielakiewicz's "The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need" which gives you the A-Z of raising those cute but oftentimes unruly pups. The book is written for novices in mind and had been a major life-saver when I was at a complete loss as to what to do when I adopted a 3-month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi (a notoriously difficult breed to raise) a couple of months ago. The book delves into the highly effective method of clicker training for dogs at length, resulting in my teaching my pup over 10 commands in just days (!). Betsy Brevitz's "Hound Health Handbook" is also another excellent reference book which offers credible advise from a writer-turned-vet behind the award-winning website, .... These books are must-read for owners who are experiencing problems in obedience training and/or understanding their dogs. Prospective owners who are contemplating what breed to buy and the pros and cons of adopting a dog to complete their lives and homes will also find them useful. "Puppies for Dummies" is another book written with the novice in mind: it offers practical clues like playing classical CDs on repeater mode while owners have to leave their dogs alone; to not make a song and dance when owners have to depart for work or retire to bed(no-no to "grandiose departures/returns gestures"); to what to look out in dog food labelling et al. 5 Stars for their comprehensive contents, readability and effectiveness!

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had created this book
I love the silly, sarcastic, even grotesque images and captions in Bad Cat. I laugh so hard I run to the toilet every time I read it and am obliged to stay there for the duration. Then I laugh so hard I'm afraid I will fall off the pot or have an aneurysm. Sorry, I know my description of my reaction is graphic, but this just might happen to you, too. Buy, beg or borrow this book if you can. When is the next one comiing out?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for a .......
Great gift for a ....... birthday, stocking stuffer, ect. for the cat lover in your life. I didn't have the chance to look through the book and wrapped it up as a gift for sister's birthday as soon as it came in. Well lets just say that when she started reading and showing the pictures in the book at her party, I laughed so hard I got a headache. Well worth the 10 bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference book for all cat owners!!
After continually receiving calls from family & friends who ask me to 'look up' something for them, this year I've begun giving this book as gifts to all my cat-loving friends & family.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Reference Book
This is a must have.I have the "Dog Owner's" version and refer to it regularly as my dogs age.I learned the hard way to question the vet and become familiar with their diagnosis. There are times when a second opinion is needed and this book has helped guide me in making that decision. It covers a variety of symptons and causes at a "lay-man's" level. It's not too technical but gives you an idea of when you should run to the vet or treat it at home.Every animal owner should have a medical reference book of some sort for their pets since their physiology is so different from ours and there are so many various diseases that only animals get.

3-0 out of 5 stars Upsetting Pictures
I agree with most of the others who have talked about this book in terms of it's easy-to-read and informative nature. However, I found the pictures of sick kitties very upsetting and it makes it hard for me to use this book. The pictures seem like those you would find in a clinical textbook for someone in veterinary school and while others may find this helpful I wish they had excluded them since they do not seem completely necessary in order to understand the text.I would not have bought this book if I had known ahead of time that it included such graphic pictures.Anyone who is very sensitive to this like myself, be forwarned! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All-inclusive working dog reveiw
This book covers many different possible 'occupations' of a working dog, and is written clearly. Not many pictures, it is full of information. If you are considering raising a working dog, this book outlines the various levels and certifications you (the handler) and the dog will need to complete. If you are interested in learning about a particular aspect more, this book will provide a description of that occupation and what that occupation entails.

4-0 out of 5 stars Top Working Dogs
Found the font size small, not that easy to read. However, the content is superb, if there is an updated version (training methods etc. change)I would be first in line.
5-0 out of 5 stars ForSerious Schutzhund Enthusiasts

4-0 out of 5 stars Schutzhund :by Susan Barwig
Good for a beginner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work
This book is very good in form as well as function. It describes all of the exercises involved in every level of schutzhund competition as well as explains how to train for each. The exercises are broken down into small, goal oriented objectives that provide an easy to understand (and utilize) format. Highly recommended for beginning or advanced trainers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine overall primer on Shutzhund
This is a fine book on Shutzhund if you desire a general overview of each of the 3 phases, general trial requirements, etc.The authors do a good job of presenting the sport, its background, and its requirements in a logical order.Do not look here if you seek depth in training technique. ...
