5-0 out of 5 stars How to Tame A Jack Russel
This is a great book. The things I read about Jacks,I had no idea about. It fits them to a tee. This is my secound Jack Russel and my daughter has one that chases aliens on the ceiling(shadows).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information
This book is written in a 'jump to' format you don't have to read it cover to cover to find information important to you. It gives you great information on selecting, training and basic care of the Jack Russell Terrier bread.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good owner's manual
This is a basic, no-nonsense guide to owning a Jack Russell. At the very least, you'll know what you're in for. DO take the author's advice seriously. Owning a Jack Russell is serious business! Your dog will need a large yard, lots of love and attention, exercise and *patience*!! I realize I am editorializing over the book here - she pretty much covers everything you need to know. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures... but what is this fish?
I bought this book to help me identify fish. Have it worked so far? No.
2-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Picture book; useless otherwise
This book has changed a lot since the first edition. Mostly, it has removed information and added pictures. LOTS of pictures. It is more of a coffee-table book than any kind of aquarium guide. But even the pictures are of uneven quality. I was shocked that the only picture included for a couple of fairly common fish were of dead, poorly-preserved specimens. Yikes!
3-0 out of 5 stars An Atlas and Little Else
"ATLAS" is defined: A volume of tables, charts, or plates that systematically illustrates a particular subject: an anatomical atlas. That's what this book is and nothing else. It has both a scientific name index and a somewhat handy Popular Names index and usually several plates (pictures) of each species. This book can be used for two purposes. If you have the name of the fish, you can find pictures of the species from the indexes. One can also puruse the many pages of pictures and find something that interests them and then go to another book for detailed information. That's about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this if you have more than one cat
This book made me see my cats in a new light. I originally picked it up because our first cat (Shadow) has never accepted our second cat (Parker), and it's not a passive kind of rejection unfortunately. Shadow was relentless in attacking Parker, and Parker could never relax while both cats were out and about in the house. We were planning a move, so I picked this book up thinking we could take advantage of the change in territory to give the cats a fresh start, and I'm very glad I read it. Every person with a cat in their family should read this! I actually developed more respect for their cat-ness because of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every cat owner (or everyone owned by a cat) should have this book!
The "HOW-TO BOOK FOR MULTIPLE CAT OWNERS!"This book has lots of valuable information for the multiple cat owner!I've had cats for 35 years and I wish I knew the helpful hints included in this book years ago.It is heartbreaking to hear of people who have to give up their newly adopted felines because they can't get along with the established household cats. This book will help prevent these types of problems.I have two eight-year-old cats and four two-year-old cats. This book is very helpful even now but I wish I had it when I adopted my four "newbies."It helps you understand how a cat thinks and why they react like they do in different situations. I haven't tried the feliway plug-in yet but I intend to.SUPER GREAT BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cat Vs Cat
Love this book.Great information about dealing with cat confrontations with each other.Good book for those of you with multi-cat families.I have three males and one female, and things get pretty hectic at times with them all vying for my attention at once and getting into spats with each.Highly recommend this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Modoc the Elephant and the Boy who Loved Her
Before there was Dumbo, before but not quite before there was Toomai of the Elephants, there was Modoc and there was Bram, the boy who loved her. Boy and elephant, born on the same day, in the same hour, two souls intertwined throughout a lifetime.
5-0 out of 5 stars Modoc: The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived
This is by far one of the best animal stories I have read. It is moving, heart-felt, entertaining, touching and funny all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great book
I ordered 2 more copies of Modoc so I could pass it out to friends.I LOVED the book.It emcompassed the qualities that I hold most dear:love, compassion, commitment, loyalty, determination, understanding and perseverance. It engulfed for me - I couldn't put it down. And was glad no one was home as I finished it - I was sobbing. Many of my friends have read it - all liked it, only a few were as passionate as I was about the book.....but I would still highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Foundation for the Novice Instructor
I will concede Mr. Wolters critics that this book does emphasize firm discipline. However I do not see this as a bad thing. After all anyone who owns a dog, irregardless if they hunt, take it in public, or just keep it around the house wants a disciplined dog that they can control. It does not teach excessive cruel punishment, just enough to let the dog know they were in the wrong. It actually emphasizes lack of attention and apathy more for initial and minor corrections. This book does counter the stern discipline by emphasizing the need to give affection after the rebuke. When it is said that the book uses old ways and techniques, remember that this book was originally written in 1961.But by no means is it outdated. As far as training it provides a solid foundation of techniques and important commands. What this book does not specify is timeframes on when to teach what. This is because every dog is different. It approaches the timeframe issue by applying the idea that when one thing is learned, move on to the next, but continue to reinforce all the previous trainings. The important thing to consider when looking at this as well as any other book is that time is the critical factor.Continuous daily training from an early age provides a system with which to grow. This book establishes that framework. With this system, you can train your dog to do anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I used this method 11 years ago to train my Golden to hunt. He has performed wonderfully and has hunted with me and loved going afield all these years. Arthritis has limited his ability, but he still loves to go. I am picking up a Llewellin pup in a few weeks and plan on using Wolter's methods once again. I highly recommend this to any novice hunting dog owner.

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge disapointment
This was a waste of money, I bought Wolters Gun Dog afterwards and it made this video look even worse.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Advice Column for Dog Issues
And, like all advice columns, sometimes you get an answer to your question, and sometimes you don't. There is a lot of good information on behaviorism buried in the recommendations...but sometimes you have to read about a completely unrelated training issue to find out about things like desensitization and counter-conditioning. If you have the time, definitely read entries on more than just the issue that interests you.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book on how to teach/train difficult dogs
If you liked Ms Jean Donaldson's first book "Culture Clash" - you will like "Dogs are From Neptune" ... In fact, I would suggest that this book is a necessary follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The All Breed Dog Grooming Guide - outstanding!
This book was purchased for a grooming class I took. It provided a wealth of information and will be a great information tool in the future.Great content!

1-0 out of 5 stars Groomers beware
This is an ok book for new people, but it has several safty issues, and doesn't have the show cuts for many dogs, poodles. It also has the wrong cuts from some of the dogs. There are better books out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars illustrations
this book has every breed that you'd ever come across at work. BUT... We don't like the short grooming discriptions and especially the pictures/illustrations. Don't get me wrong, Lynn Miller is a great artist. Our fellow employees have agreed that we'd much rather see a photogragh or better yet, a before and after photo of some more difficult breeds. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in years
I picked this up (reluctantly) at the library on a whim, assuring myself that should the author become too self-pitying too quickly, I would abandon it.I simply don't enjoy a lot of boo-hooing about horrible childhoods. To my pleasant surprise, I devoured the book in less than 48 hours, and understood the author's connection to her horses.I can't remember the last time a book had me laughing, feeling, and crying, all the while hoping that the experience just doesn't end. It's quite a ride for just 250 pages.....If you're a horse lover, or have suffered through the loss of a loved one, this is one that you shouldn't miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horse Housing
This is the best book on the subject that I've seen. The topic is presented in a professional way so that an amature builder can understand. It's accompanied by color photos and simple professionally drafted diagrams. I would recommend this reference to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positively - A Pragmatic, Professional Resource
Horse Housing provides pragmatic advice on building and remodeling barns and sheds. This is a first rate publication offering the reader wonderful photographs and easy-to-understand illustrations combined with top notch writing by wordsmiths, Richard Klimesh and Cherry Hill.As a Texas State Certified General Appraiser of real estate since 1977, including rural properties, I need to be up-to-date regarding the details of what constitutes well-constructed horse facilities. This excellent book is a professional resource that facilitates a more precise completion of my assignments. Positively, this book belongs on your shelf when you start your next stable, barn or shed project!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Not Just Horsing Around!
As a State Certified Texas General Real Estate Appraiser, I have had the opportunity to view improvements such as barns and stables on numerous rural properties."Horse Housing" is an excellent resource for rural appraisers.I'm not just "horsing around" when I say that if owners of some of the properties I've viewed had utilized tips in this book during their construction project they could have built a superior instead of poor or average structure .Texas is home to more than 1 million horses, about 15% of the total U.S. horse population. However, while people tend to picture horses in rural settings, the counties with the largest numbers of horses are in metropolitan Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio. So this book's guidance on zoning, building codes, and ideas for building an attractive/functional structure that is homogenous to an urban neighborhood is vital to a property owner/investor.It sounds like the reviewer from Michigan should have contacted her local Home Depot or lumberyard for advice on building stalls rather than expect detailed instructions in "Horse Housing." ... What I love about this book is the step by step instructions on how to train a dog.Kilcommons tells you exactly what you are supposed to do and then shows you with pictures (sadly black and white). He also offers several different methods of training one command.Because of this, Good Owners Great Dogs is a valuable resource to have.He also takes a no nonsense approach for establishing control of your dog.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pointing Labrador
This is a no nonsense, practical guide to a very special type of dog, the Pointing Labrador. The book is written by an expert pointing labrador trainer couple with years of experience which they are willing to line out in their book for the average pointing lab owner. Starting with how to pick a puppy, beautiful pictures, to tips on practically everything involved with the rearing and training of this very special breed of dog. 5-0 out of 5 stars recommended read for dog lovers
I really liked this book (I might be just a little biased though - my dog is Dallie on page 176).I was very surprised to get the phone call from Steve Swanbeck and even more surpised to see that my story made the cut.I was very impressed that he got the story about Dallie 100% correct. The other stories were wonderful as well - full of inspiring people.I have read other books similar to this and some of them can be depressing and heartwrenching.I am pleased to report that this book is one that leaves one feeling that there are good people in this world and that happy endings do exist. Also, kudos to Mr. Swanbeck for donating part of his proceeds to help homeless animals.I am a firm believer in less talk more action.

"Please read this" is all I can say! I've worked as numerous (no-kill) shelters and I see the devestation every day. My own three dogs came from situations very much like the fine pooches in this wonderful book.

I have trained four or five labs over the past 30 years using Water Dog as my bible. The methods described therein work. The hardest part is finding the time to work with your dog, but Wolter's method definitely teaches the dog and the hunter/trainer what to do.I have read most of the retriever training books which have been written and basically Water Dog is all you need. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This book is full of GREAT information and was very helpful since I had never owned a dog before. But I only gave it three stars because it doesn't have anything that you can't already find online for free! It will be a good reference if I am in a training situation and the power goes out, thus limiting my access to the internet!

5-0 out of 5 stars COMMON SENSE ON A STICK!
This book has all you will ever need to have the perfect dog.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book.... Just Not For Us and Our Canine Companion
We bought this book when we adopted a puppy. The ideas were very well-thought out and well-written, easy to understand.I read this book over and over and wondered why my puppy was still behaving like a maniac, very few of the techniques worked.I began to question myself, thinking I could not understand the simple techniques written about in this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars this book is execellent a must buy
like the title says this book is great. its written by vets and other experts and has illustrations and quick reference charts. detailed pages on what seems to be a-z problems and is filled with fun and lesser known facts. as well as advice. its covers from the very beginning of getting a dog to when they get old. it also has first aid and basically everything you need to know as a dog owner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general info, but poorly written
I'd give this book 4 stars for its content, but the way it's written drops it down to 3.It's pretty comprehensive, covering nearly every important topic, but doesn't delve very deeply into any.The big problem though, is that it is very annoying to read because every few sentences are a quote from some 'expert' so half the text ends up being stateing who said it.Such as "...blah blah blah... says so and so of the blank department of behavioral sciences for blank, etc etc."Ends up reading more like a high school essay than a book.I expect the authors of a book to take the time to actually reorganize and rewrite all these random thoughts and not just string together a bunch of quotes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for first time dog owners
This book has been a life saver and a nerve tonic to all of my puppy and dog questions.Being a first time dog owner can be an anxious experience and this book is full of knowledge, facts, and common sense solutions to all that can ail a dog. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A LOVE STORY
It's a short, bittersweet story.A woman is dying and does not have the energy, anymore, to spend time with her friends. She still wants a companion and chooses Gus, a dog left for dead, and now in a shelter with no family. She brings him home and the story explores their life together, how she rescues Gus, and he eventually becomes her main companion in life and her final days, helping her ignore her pain.
3-0 out of 5 stars More pictures than words
Well, I bought this book because of the title and subject matter. It really isn't a reading book but more of beautiful pictures of Gus and his owner.A sad tale but you really never get much of a story.I thought it would have more hints and tales about Gus--in depth. But you only get the fringe and just by looking at the pictures they tell a story (a girl that is dying and her dog that helps her through and then he finds a new home) without words. So, I flipped through in half an hour and now the book is on the coffee table.
