2-0 out of 5 stars Questionable facts
The author cites research of mine on deafness, but gets the facts about my research wrong and gets the reference citation wrong. Hopefully he does a better job with the other research he quotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Dogs (and Humans) Think!
This is an excellent book to give an overview of how dogs views the world as well as how that view compares to the view of humans.Dr. Cohen not only explains how dogs think but also how their senses work to perceive the world, again as compared to humans. The information is not just based on casual observations and anecdotal tales, although those are used, but also based on many laboratory studies over the years to give a good solid foundation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dog's don't think they are people, they think we are dogs.
In his usual thorough and "text-booky" approach, before he takes on the real question of how dogs think, Coren wants us to fully understand how information, used in the thought process, gets into the mind of the dog in the first place. To this end, he takes us on a detailed study of eyes, ears, nose, tongue and touch. Many implications for animal trainers are strewn throughout the entire manuscript.Along the way, he imbeds other useful suggestions for dog owners on how to get finicky eaters to eat, how to test your elderly dog's eyesight and hearing and how to compensate for weaknesses that commonly afflict elderly dogs. He even addresses the question of whether dogs have a sixth sense that allows them to predict earthquakes or anticipate exactly when their master will arrive home. Yes, I love the way he puts this section together and, no, I won't divulge his conclusion.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners
This book contains some really great information. The author gives details about all of the herding breeds, including many that I didn't expect. He gives insights about what each breed has been specifically bred for, i.e. driving, gathering, etc., that is very helpful in understanding your dog.A careful study of the personality types of dogs as it affects their approach to stock is also extremely helpful. He also gives several progressive excercizes that that seem very useful. Also, I appreciated the calm, quiet, but firm training style emphasized in this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Experience is the best teacher....
I suppose a person can learn to remove an appendix, fly a plane, or conduct a defense by reading a book; but I know I would prefer my surgeon, pilot, and attorney to have had some hands-on experience before practicing on me.Same thing goes for herding livestock - there just is no substitute for a good trainer who knows what they are doing.Having a background in obedience, tracking, and agility gave me no headstart in herding - and no amount of bookreading changed that. When I found a trainer who was able to read me and my dogs, communicate with us, and be fair but firm, we made great progress.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gone to the dogs
This book is just the thing for someone who is interested in training a herding dog or just want to find out how it is done. This deals with herding sheep, but I was left wanting to know if this training could be used on other types on livestock? If you want to go herding this book wil herd you in the right direction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Raw Food Diet

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Raw Food Nutrition
This book provides a straight-forward approach to a raw-food diet, and the changes required to maintain the health of your pet through the process. It also helps to have someone who can assist you in locating the ingredients locally, but Schultze provides all the requisite information that you will need.A great resource to go to when you get a nagging question, or have a concern.Try not to let people talk you out of trying the diet, as you WILL see changes in the health of your pet; many veterinarians that I have spoken with are not particularly supportive. My 2 y/o Lab has a softer coat, clearer eyes, and better muscle tone since I have started him on the diet. This diet is slightly more expensive than feeding dog chow, but the reward of having a healthy, happy pet far outweigh the associated costs.Good luck, and enjoy your pet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually worth the money !
I really hesitated before I bought this book.I thought "how good could this POSSIBLY be for $150.00."All of my doubts were erased once I opened the cover.I am planning to build a large indoor arena with stable.Every single one of my questions were answered thoroughly and clearly in this book.Beyond that hundreds of details I had never even considered were brought to light in Eileen Wheelers book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT book for the layman or the experianced!
No fanfare or complications. Just a simple book with simple terms and diagrams that anyone can understand. I have met Sil a few times at Earth Dog trials. VERY good dog trainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful from start to finish
I bought this book hoping for starter help with my first tracking dog. This has been a great asset to me and my friends. It was not written at a time when there was a VST title but if you can get to the TDX level then I think that is a great start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For All Horse Fanciers
Before this collection and Chicken Soup For The Pet Lover's Soul, I had never before been remotely interested in the Chicken Soup series. I had assumed they were mostly self-help books, or religious or something. I was pleasently surprised when I read this sweet collection of stories. Quite contrary to my prejudices, it proved to be an inspirational, heart warming look at horses and how they alter our lives for the better. Whether you are an active equestrian, or simply an admirer of these noble animals, Chicken Soup For The Horse Lover's Soul will touch you all the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Passion forHorses
This book was given to me as a gift.Once I started reading it I could not put it down.I love horses and everything you dream or image about horses is all rolled up in this book.I laughed and cried over the stories I read.If you own a horse or have ridden I'm sure you could relate to some of the stories in this book.It is well worth buying.I have already ordered the second Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul II.
3-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone who likes horses...
As the husband of a woman addicted to all things equine I must say that I enjoyed this book. My experience with horses typically has to do with broom handling and staying out of the way and I enjoyed the stories of how horses actually enrich people's lives. While I thought horse were mostly good for spending money on I find that they are also good as healers, teachers, companions, and best friends. Like all the Chicken soup books the prose is simple and the stories are short and to the point. Do anyone who likes horses a favor and give them this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST read for all riders
I've never really benefited from reading books about riding in the past, but Hunter Seat Equitation changed that! I constantly refer to the book when I'm riding and it has made me much more aware of my body and aids. The pictures are wonderful and really give a good example of what you are trying to achieve. It even includes things you might not expect, like how to choose the right horse to compliment your style of riding. Wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on riding

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Love Bouviers...
If you love Bouviers, you will love this book.It is worth every penny!Great history, photos, and packed all the information you need as a potential Bouvier owner or as an admirer of the breed.Pedigrees, puppy selection, grooming... it's all there.A must have if you plan to own a Bouvier.I keep mine on my bedside table... when I'm not carrying it around with me.(Yup, it's heavy.)This is the best Bouvier book I've ever found and definitely the most thorough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed history of breed, special emphasis on police work
As a new and first time owner of a Bouvier des Flandres puppy, I appreciated many of the details, historical, raising and breeding. The book emphasizes the Bouvier as a Schultzhund dog, which is the author'sperogative.I would have appreciated more information on training of aBouvier for a pet. Many dog owners desire a lovable pet not a championpolice dog.The author is an important breeder of Bouviers and he has manyvalid points to keep the Bouviers to a standard.I myself researchedbreeders for several months as it is a problem. My summary statement isthat the book is worth the money. If there is a revision, I hope theauthor will broaden his interests in the breed for the general dog owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to help gundogs train themselves
As an all breeds trainer of gundogs, this book is the first book that I recommend for everyone witha new puppy whether the first puppy or the latest in a line of gundogs. It is well thought out, well written and full of solid information and suggestions. Read it, re-read it and use it, you will be glad you did.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all dog owners
I am an avid bird hunter here in the Northestern US. Through the years I have owned, trained and handled a number of hunting and non-hunting dogs. I also judge hunting dogs, not for show, but for their natural hunting qualities and their ability to take training to become excellent, finished hunting dogs and good citizens around the house. Consequently, I get to see a large number of dogs every year who have been trained using the principles outlined in Joan Bailey's book, and unfortunately, some who have not. There is no question in my mind this is the best book available for anyone who wants to groom a great hunting dog, and a wonderful canine companion. The book is beautifully written, concise, and best of all, it works. I recommend it, and often give it as a gift, to anyone I know who is getting a puppy. Buying this book and following it to the letter is the best thing any dog owner can do for themselves and for their dog!

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves
After 40 yrs of fuzzy faced versatile hunting dogs, I start with a new dog by reading Joan Bailey Training book. It always makes me remember something very important to the bringing up of the best hunting companions and it comes directly from Joan's book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Housetraining for Dummies
I was pleased with the format of this book, and the simple instructions ands explainations. I bought it to help me train my new puppy, and it was very useful. I'm not exactly a pro at dog training. This book made a big difference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and well written
This book gives a great deal of very good advice for housetraining your dog in several different ways. I have employed many of the techniques described in this book. My only wish is that more space had been devoted to indoor housetraining for smaller dogs and toy breeds. But, since indoor training is a relatively new concept and this book appears to have been published about five years ago, I can understand why more space was not devoted to the subject. And, admittedly, it is likely a rather small percentage of us for whom indoor training would apply. Overall, worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible and comprehensive
McCullough covers every aspect of housetraining, a very important part of living with a dog.Her writing is lively and accessible and she leaves no stone unturned. She doesn't shy away from any aspect of the topic and doesn't resort to cutesy euphemisms. Whether you're about to acquire a dog who will need housetraining or are already living with a dog who has potty problems, Housetraining for Dummies will provide the information you need to tackle the task. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
Healed by Horses is a wonderful book that gives hope and encouragement to anyone who reads it! It reaffirms the fact that life is a gift, and, if you allow it, struggle can make you better. As Carole states on page 230: "It's working with horses that heals, by developing discipline, courage, patience, and perseverance. You may come to horses -- as I did -- unable to walk, unable to cope, disfigured and in despair, but what I learned is that horses do not judge by looks or class or reputation. Still, you must earn their trust and cooperation, and out of that comes self-esteem."

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Story of Carole Fletcher
Healed by Horses is a must-read; a fantastic book that leaves readers entertained, educated and... changed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fanning the Flames
As a fan and student of Carole Fletcher's Trick Training techniques, I was familiar with the bio behind this book before reading it.So it was with a literary mindset that I opened the cover, expecting to view the entire book with a critical eye; curious, mostly, to learn just what did Larry Scanlan do to bring the ashes of Carole's past back to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, Thorough Book!
This book was exactly what I was looking for.I know nothing about cattle, my husband has raised them since he was young.I wanted a book that would explain the "little things" to me so I wouldn't have to ask him day in day out what this meant, what they are doing, how will we know when they are in heat, etc. It's very interesting, easy read and very informative.

I am a huge fan of Emma Parsons for promoting awareness of how pet owners can train a dog to behave with greater calm and self-control. This book is excellent for wholistically oriented, involved dog trainers. Very methodical and precise instructions for preventing and healing many problem behaviors.I am making it required reading for an adult ed class that I teach....Any trainer who wants insight into how clicker training can be used to shape emotions should buy this book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Dog Training
This book does contain good instrction, but I was hoping for more help in teaching obedience to my German Shepherd.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Pat Miller would only write a book for new parents...
Pat Millers, "The Power of Positive Dog Training" is quite possibly the most recommended and lent out book on my shelf.I come from a different background than a lot of the reviewers, I do not own a dog training academy or raise many dogs.I own one Boston Terrier.I purchased Miller's book prior to his arrival in my home and I have never been let down.Millers book is interesting, descriptive, and concise.I look to it often to solve little problems in curving behavior or to get ideas for new tricks.I began with her methods on day one when he was nine weeks old, potty and crate training.I can now say that I have one of the best behaved dogs that I know.He knows many of the commands and tricks in the book (plus some.)The best ones are not the amazing ones, but the ones that go unnoticed.Potty training, Leash training, Stop, Come, Stay, and Heel are big ones.I chose this book because I choose to reinforce the good behavior and do not believe in hitting my dog.Everything that Miller states made sense to me, and it is for that reason that I chose to raise him via her methods.A friend just got a new puppy. My first recommendation...

Received a signed copy (nice surprise!) of the book which I found to be well written, illustrated and quite complete, information-wise.The only comment I can make is that I thought that there would be more specific information on donkey training than there currently is.While the author's Little Jack Horner tends to prove that whatever a mule can do, so can a donkey, I wonder whether the training described for mules in this book is also applicable as is to donkeys.5-0 out of 5 stars Boy was I mistaken
I ordered the book....then read the reviews and wanted to cancel....I received it and am I glad....it is the greatest thing going for training donkeys! I own 2...I know.....those who did not like the book simply don't understand longears. And an added bonus was I got a signed by the author copy....thanks Meredith...Judy George......ADAMS member since 1990

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip-off
This is absolute offal. Not only is it a rip-off of a GOOD idea, it's not even a good rip-off.
2-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not funny.
I bought this and Bad Cats the other day, and I have to say Bad Cats was far better. Bad Dogs is cute, but a little stupid. Almost all of the photos are dogs wearing costumes. Bad Dogs? No, Bad OWNERS. Get Bad Cats instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!!!
First of all I have to say the book is defiently worth the money. It dosent have a ton of funny parts but the parts it does have are enough to make you and/or a friend crack up. The only problems are that it dosent have many hilarious pages and its not as good as bad cat. If youre looking for book that will make you laugh then get bad dog and bad cat but if you have to decide which one get bad cat, although bad dog is good enough to buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sheltie Talk
This is an EXCELLENT book for the new sheltie owner. Very in depth information, and very easy to read. Contains info for everything from bringing the new puppy home, tobasics in obedience and agility training. Only reason she didn't get five ***** stars, is because she got a bit "windy" with long explanations, and it is so easy toread, they aren't necessary. You must have this book!:)

5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is!
"Sheltie Talk" is the best Sheltie book out there, in spite of it's age (1985). I keep hearing rumors that there will be an updated edition, but I haven't seen it yet. I keep hoping. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE only book you will ever need!
It is the Sheltie "bible" for all breeders. I recommend it to all puppy buyers. It is not only for breeders and exhibitors of Shelties but for the companion dog owner as well. I know people with other breeds that just LOVE this book and have it as well!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for a anyone considering a German Shorthair
This book is an excellent, concise introduction to anyone even remotely considering getting one of these dogs.It covers everything from how to pick a puppy, deciding if these are the right type of dog for you and how to find this out, diseases and ailments that these dogs are prone to, basic puppy and dog training methods, housetraining, and basic hunting methods.Along with a complete description of the accepted breed standard and competitions available for your dog.Though this should not be the only book a new GSP owner should get, it is recommended as the first one to get when deciding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Jumping off Point
This book touches all the bases.Excellent for the new dog owner.Make no mistake, it is NOT the end of ones personal gsp library, unless using the dog as "just" a pet.I would recommend others as well. This book does just what it is intended to, introduce the GSP owner with brief history and insight into his/her new K9 friend. For the price you can't beat it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the box it is shipped in.
This is a generic "how to feed your puppy" book with a couple of pictures of GSP's and one extra chapter devoted to the breed. If you don't already know the information contained in the book, you have never owned a dog in your life.Spend the extra cash on "New Complete GSP's" or "GSP's Today" ...
