5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Recommended Reading
As a dog owner since childhood and an obedience trainer, I found this book fantastic!A lot of what Cesar suggests, I already do.I wish a lot of people who let their dogs run roughshod over them, would read this book.It should be required reading for first time dog owners.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'd Give it 6 Stars if I Could...
While veterinarians are educated in the physiology and biology of animals, the ones who truly understand behavior are the exception.Cesar's education may not be formal, but his methodology makes sense and actually works in practice.Dogs become aggressive, obsessed and phobic when their owners do not assume the role of pack leader.Matching a weak human with a strong dog, with no exercise and discipline, causes most psychological problems.DOGS ARE NOT PEOPLE!Cesar teaches understanding them at their most primal level and treating them as such. There is NOTHING cruel about what he professes.Cruelty is putting a dog down because of preventable behavior problems.Build a healthy relationship between you and your dog by reading and using this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars I WISH I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS
This guy has no formal education in animal training or behavior.Anyone who has had a college level course will know that the method he uses (flooding) is inhumane. It should only be used in very rare instances under the guidance of a trained professional. When done improperly it will lead to even more problems.Do yourself a favor and speak with your vet or ask for a referral to a certified animal behaviorist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opening education into improving your pets quality of life
This book was recommended by my Aunt who owns a terrier breed. After following the advice in Dr. Pitcairn's book the change in her dog was amazing. His coat is no longer dark and oily but bright and shiny, small sores on his back are gone, his breathe is fresh and the energy that he displays makes him look like a puppy again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats
I have found this book very helpful for many things that affect my dogs.I'm so glad I purchased it.I have recommended to many friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Pet Bible!
There is no better advice and help you can get than using this book. His first one I still have, the binding is gone and it is dog earred and the pages loose, but I have marks and all on it and use it all the time.I cannot recommend it more. This book will help you in helping your animals without the use of chemicals, antibiotics and drugs. Do yourself a favor and buy it... and more important, once you do,use it... !!Then, check out your area for a naturopathic vet. You will not be sorry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Having a Puppy Even More Fun!
Having a puppy is a ton of fun, but with this book it's even MORE fun!The authors of this book really know what they're talking about when it comes to puppies, how to train them, how to handle them so they feel secure, and how to get that tiny bundle of love fully integrated into your new pack. The real beauty of this book is that by using the systems taught and explained so well in this book, we were able to get our new puppy housebroken in less than two weeks!Caesar's book is a beauty if you have a full-grown or young dog. This one is the CHOICE for the little tykes.A real gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for new puppy owners
I love all the books by Brian & Sarah, but I think this one is my new favorite. It's clear that the authors "speak dog," and the use of space games to communicate clearly with your pooch is, to me, revolutionary. It's such a simple concept, one of those things where you smack yourself in the forehead and say, "Duh!Why didn't I realize that?"
5-0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for training a dog of any age
As with all of Brian and Sarah's books, My Smart Puppy is a delight to read. Easy to follow, personable, and full of helpful suggestions, this book is both motivating and encouraging. While reading it, I kept wanting to stop and do the various exercises with my dogs. Packed with information, this is an easy-to-apply, practical, and FUN book on dog training. The stories about Pip, the authors' puppy, are engaging, and the many photos illustrate the principles and training games beautifully. The space games are a new and much needed addition to the world of dog training, as they teach owners of both puppies and adult dogs how to communicate easily, effectively, and clearly with their dogs in an enjoyable and non-confrontational manner. Through them, a strong, positive relationship is established as the foundation of all training, so that your dog learns built in habits of trust, respect, and obedience. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a puppy or dog of any age. It will help you and your dog understand each other better and have a lifetime of fun together.

Editorial Review

Open the front cover and the first two pages you see contain the Index of Signs and Symptoms, from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and tucked up) to Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual). There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on cancers and medications. In short, it covers every health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about, identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the severity of the condition, and indicates what treatments or actions to take to best insure your dog's good health.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my dog's life
This is an excellent resource for pet owners because it is logically written, well-organized and goes over broad range of ailments your dog might have. It is set up for quick reference, and information is conveyed succinctly, so the reader is able to retrieve the needed information quickly. This ease of use literally saved my dog's life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dog Health Care Bible
Highly informative and very detailed, some may think its too deatiled but its better to know too much about how to care for a dog than too little.I raise a small number of dogs and I might as well not put it on the shelf I use it on a daily basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Midnight Help
This is a good, well written, and well organized book. There is a whole section on diarreha, including how much Pepto-Bismal to give a dog and other home care. This was invaluable when my dog got into something she shouldn't have eaten. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
I have been a trainer for many years, and am currently working towards becoming a behaviorist - and I can tell you that Paul Owens offers nothing new to the world of dog training. This book is an average (at best) compilation of training techniques discovered and perfected by other (professional) dog trainers/behaviorists. I've read many, many books on dog training and behavior and this is one not worth purchasing. If you're looking for an interesting read to learn more about how dogs think and why they act the way they do - check out any of Stanley Coren's books (he has many). If you're looking for training techniques - take a class. Honestly, there is nothing better for a dog than to go to puppy classes (with a respectable and knowledgable trainer) where they can be properly socialized and trained. If your dog is having serious behavior issues - consult a professional animal behaviorist. Your veterinarian should be able to refer you to somebody. Good luck!
5-0 out of 5 stars Owner of a Difficult Dog
We tried all the tricks from bribes to choke chains and Paul Owen's method REALLY WORKS. Not only is my dog happier with me for teaching her usng a kind method, I am happier too because my dog really listens to me. This book is the best.

2-0 out of 5 stars CLICKER TRAINING
Sorry, but I'm just not a fan of clicker training or the concept of waiting around *ho hum* until your dog happens to do something that you want it to do. 5-0 out of 5 stars From Problems to Profits Succeeds
This is the definitive book on the "business side" of grooming. Why another reviewer here would say to refer to Notes From The Grooming Table doesn't make sense. It's a great book on the "how to groom side" of grooming and is not a book on the business side of grooming at all. From Problems to Profits for the business side of grooming and Notes for the styling side of grooming and you have the best of the best today.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless for House Call or Mobile Grooming
I was recommended this book by grooming board but I found it totally useless for the mobile groomer or house call groomer. The book called "Notes from the Grooming Table" is a much better investment for the groomer in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best for grooming.
I visited the office of this author today and asked if I could write a review, and they put me online here so here I am. At first I thought this book was the biography of the author. It's not. It's her system she used to go from a tiny salon to a major pet salon. No matter how small or large a grooming shop you want, you can do it. I was so impressed look at me, I came to visit the author and what a warm welcome I was given. I bet her 5,000 pet owner clients loved her as much as me. This is a classic and many books on how to for any type of service business could take a lesson from the format of this book. If you are going to own a grooming small or large there are so many gems of info in this book. I am so impressed and feel so great about my future as a grooming business owner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars European view
From european point of view the drawback of the book is that it describes the tasks of american rules for obedience trial. As we in europe have different set of tasks in our obedience trial the book did not fill the need for specific instructions on those tasks. I was also looking for more structured and simplified clear instructions in the book things are more of discussed through. Still the book was worth the money paid for it. It has lots of grounds for why to do this way. The basics of the book is fluencies on what the obedience tasks are based on and those same fluencies are still usefull with european rules too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The All Breed Dog Grooming Guide - outstanding!
This book was purchased for a grooming class I took. It provided a wealth of information and will be a great information tool in the future.Great content!

1-0 out of 5 stars Groomers beware
This is an ok book for new people, but it has several safty issues, and doesn't have the show cuts for many dogs, poodles. It also has the wrong cuts from some of the dogs. There are better books out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars illustrations
this book has every breed that you'd ever come across at work. BUT... We don't like the short grooming discriptions and especially the pictures/illustrations. Don't get me wrong, Lynn Miller is a great artist. Our fellow employees have agreed that we'd much rather see a photogragh or better yet, a before and after photo of some more difficult breeds. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The only puppy book you'll ever need
This is the friendliest how-to book I've ever seen. For example, at the end of the semi-scientific chapter on how to test a puppy's personality and temperament, it points out that people have been raising puppies for thousands of years without formal tests. It instantly restored my faith in my home-grown skills while giving me more to think about.Read it at any depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound advice that works
I have a lab, and originally purchased Labrador's for Dummies by Joel Walton -- since I'm not a very experienced dog owner.I was immediately impressed with how well the positive-training techniques by Joel worked. But when I went to purhcase other books, I noticed that many other authors took a much harsher stand on punishment -- and really fixated on the whole alpha dog concept. So I investigated further, and soon learned that many proponents of the "positive training" methods credited Ian Dunbar. So I knew I had to have Dunbar's book.
3-0 out of 5 stars An OK addition to your library...
I recommend this book to new dog owners, as I wholeheartedly agree with most, if not all, if Dunbar's ideas and points. However, after reading many dog training books, I found it simple and mostly common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Dogs is BIG on Fun and Information for ALL Dog Owners!
Little Dogs by Deborah Wood took me by great surprise. I purchased the book expecting entertainment with some basic tips, but what I received was exciting, tangible tips and exercises to help me bond and understand my new puppy. I learned A LOT about what makes her the way she is and different things she is communicating to me and not just doing for no reason or because she doesn't know any better! I gained so much patience and confidence in working with her thanks to this book. We now grow together and I am able to allow her to teach me things about myself, too. The book is so well written and the layout of short chapters filled to the brim with tips and facts, lets me read an entire section and set it down to work and play with my puppy. All of the information is well backed up by facts and explains not just WHAT to do, but WHY. It even goes as far as telling you WHY NOT to do other things. It's not all work, either! It's a great read on its own and even my husband has finished it off. We find ourselves quoting the book as reminders or help in explaining certain behaviors our puppy exhibits. This book is just what we needed and we will be keeping it in arm's reach for a long time! Highly recommended for owners of all breeds and sizes of dogs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
God honest truth, I never saw Amy Tan's praise for this book until it reached my hands. And I have to say, she's right. From the poo eating, to the "armpit piranah's", to the gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous cover! Yes... In truth the cover lured me, and thankfully the contents have proven even more worthy. Especially love all the tricks and tips on flying with your precious baby, and training the little scroundrels. Cheers!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not necessary
I don't really think that the pint-sized dog warranteed a book of its own. I cannot see that the training is any different from the others I have read. 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't get bogged down in the unimportant details.
I tried reading this book a few months ago, but couldn't get past the author's warnings about the perils of not having puppy parties and meeting a specific number of new people per day.I did just finish reading it, for real, and can say the author knows what he is talking about. My puppy went to a puppy class where Dr. Dunbar's methods were recommended, especially meeting new people and teaching bite inhibition. My 5-month-old puppy now has a soft mouth and meets a lot of new people happily.I do treat him whenever he does, and introduce him to new things all the time.If you plan on having a real canine pal for the next decade or so, read this book and pay attention to the appendix where Dr. Dunbar rates the most urgent things to teach your dog.I have had other dogs before, but not trained ones. There is such a big difference, and it's easy.If everyone would read Dr. Dunbar's book before getting a puppy, no one would need to read Cesar Millan's.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can I unread this book?
Unless you can spend every waking moment training your dog please do not read this book.(And by training I mean following this book to the letter, there is no room for mistakes says Mr. Dunbar!Allowing even one will make your dog untrainable and horrendous!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I had my doubts about this book. I am a professional dog trainer, and a animal behaviorist. I would not recommened this book for your average reader. However it covers the basics of canine behavior very well and I would recommend it to anyone who trains dogs, or works with groups of dogs and wants a deeper understanding of their social interactions.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I doubt that some of the examples were true to life. Some dogs were at first presented as knowing as much as a 3 year old human child. These dogs were presented as responding to long sentences and did things that dogs just cannot do.Then the book analysed these impossible canine responses. And I do not accept the book's analysis. These fantastic canine responses could not have happened as the book asserts.

I don't agree with all that he says, but it is all interesting. Lots of information to integrate with practical learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising the bar for agility books!
Masterfully worded with wonderful illustrations and diagrams, Jane Simmons-Moake has created one of the best books on dog agility training I've seen. This book covers obstacle training for all of the AKC/NADAC/USDAA equipment, focusing on excellence and doing things "the right way" from the beginning. Each obstacle is presented in an easy-to-read, step by step format. She provides tips for those who have troubles teaching a particular obstacle, and has special sections on fixing dropped bars and missed contacts. Not only does she show you how to train the obstacle, but also how to work from a distance with control and confidence... from the beginning! Many trainers leave distance training until the basics have been mastered, but this book allows even the novice agility enthusiast to get a competitive edge early on. Her method will produce consistent and satisfying results! Included in the beginning of the book is also a chapter on equipment and getting started. A brilliant read from start to finish! I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in agility, from the "newbie" to the seasoned competitor!

2-0 out of 5 stars Questionable facts
The author cites research of mine on deafness, but gets the facts about my research wrong and gets the reference citation wrong. Hopefully he does a better job with the other research he quotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Dogs (and Humans) Think!
This is an excellent book to give an overview of how dogs views the world as well as how that view compares to the view of humans.Dr. Cohen not only explains how dogs think but also how their senses work to perceive the world, again as compared to humans. The information is not just based on casual observations and anecdotal tales, although those are used, but also based on many laboratory studies over the years to give a good solid foundation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dog's don't think they are people, they think we are dogs.
In his usual thorough and "text-booky" approach, before he takes on the real question of how dogs think, Coren wants us to fully understand how information, used in the thought process, gets into the mind of the dog in the first place. To this end, he takes us on a detailed study of eyes, ears, nose, tongue and touch. Many implications for animal trainers are strewn throughout the entire manuscript.Along the way, he imbeds other useful suggestions for dog owners on how to get finicky eaters to eat, how to test your elderly dog's eyesight and hearing and how to compensate for weaknesses that commonly afflict elderly dogs. He even addresses the question of whether dogs have a sixth sense that allows them to predict earthquakes or anticipate exactly when their master will arrive home. Yes, I love the way he puts this section together and, no, I won't divulge his conclusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Train yourself and train your dog
After reading the first few chapters of this great book I tried one of the simplest techniques and it worked! The book is well written and easy to understand. The author makes his training points by mingling the training method with interesting stories of problem dogs that have been corrected.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
We have implemented just a couple of the suggestions so far and have already seen improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars It just makes sense!
This is THE book for training your dog in my opinion. We have a very stubborn Beagle puppy who was showing many signs of thinking she was the alpha dog. After reading this book and applying the simple principles we have a changed dog! She is calm and responsive. We were at our wit's end and our obedience trainer recommended this book and it has been fabulous. I would recommend reading this book before you ever put a foot in a breeder's kennel. It will help you so much. It does work for older dogs too, so if nothing else has worked...try this book! This woman is a genius. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
Honestly, I would have given this book a 4 or 5 star rating if it didn't come included with a section on treating sickly puppies. Her misinformed view on this (and the fact that I didn't seek out a friend of mine who DID know what to do in that situation) caused me to lose a puppy. After reading this section, I was so convinced that "Pittsburgh" (Named because the father was named "Steeler") was too sickly to help.I unfortunately gave into the survival of the fittest mentality, and because of that, I lost the puppy.I did eventually seek help which only made it harder to take.My "sickly puppy" merely had a broken leg and therefore couldn't get to the food, water, milk, etc.He couldn't play, he could just lay there separated from the rest so to not get trampled on too much.I wish I would have listened to my friend. The little guy must have been in constant pain his whole life, and it was against what I'd read in the book to seek out veterinary assistance.Beyond that, this book is pretty good. But please, if you're going to bring a litter of puppies into the world, whether you meant to or not (mine was not a planned preganancy), do the responsible thing and at least figure out what the problem with the puppy is as SOON as you find out that there's a problem. The puppy is counting on you, and you'll never forgive yourself if you're going through what I've gone through with this. You owe it to the puppy to give it a chance at life.Even if it wasn't a "planned" pregnancy, if you never wanted a litter and you didn't get your dog fixed in the first place, you inadvertantly planned on having that litter, and it's time to do the right thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies: A Complete and Practical Guide
I'm not a breeder but I do foster dogs for a rescue.Recently I was asked to take a pregnant female that had come in.I was very nervous!Growing up on my grandparent's farm I had seen calves, foals, and piglets born but never a dog. Several breeders I talked to recommed this book and it is awesome!I read through it, got my supplies together, and had it in my lap turning the pages as mama dog whelped her pups.It is very thorough and gives a lot of information on what to expect, what's normal, and how to handle problems.Definitely two thumbs up!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whelping and Rearing of Puppies
This book is wonderful.I am a first time breeder and this book provided so much information in just the first few pages, it was amazing. The author Muriel Lee is great and gives direct and concise directions on the birthing process and the raising and close watching of the pups.My 10 standand poodle pups are 2 weeks old now and are large and thriving - we almost lost 2 of them, but with our knowledge from this book we were able to revive them. They are all now happy, fat and very healthy. Thanks to the wonderful insite of Muriel Lee, photos and the wonderfully informative book. ...
