5-0 out of 5 stars Basics! Basics! Basics!
I found this book to have quite a different approach to teaching the beginner to ride. The author focus on balance and safety, and not moving the rider forward until a they are proficent in basic skills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
A fabulous, practical book that addresses a common but "secret" problem of so many horse lovers...fear and anxiety. This is especially distressing to adult riders who used to be able to just jump on and GO!Gincy gives concrete and helpful exercises for us to do on and off the horse. She uses great visualization techniques like Sally Swift. It's great to have a book that addresses riding instead of ground training.Thank you Gincy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
Returning to riding after many years away from horses, I was injured just when I was starting to get my confidence back. This added an element of fear that I hadn't ever had to deal with before.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Every Horse Owner
This Handbook is quick and easy to use.Packed with symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments, its index and contents help horse owners to quickly locate information when its needed most.Although the book only has black and white photos, they clearly demonstrate how tos, anatomy, and display common physically symptoms. The book also has charts and diagrams on every day equine topics such as worms and necessary vaccines. The last few chapters are designated to reproduction and are equipped with useful information for an owner thinking about breeding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent health reference

This book creates a great foundation to train yourself and your horse to excell in jumping no matter what your intentions may be. I personally would recomend this book for all ages and engligh riders even the one's with no intention on jumping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imperfect but a Great Start!!!
I purchased this book in an effort to make good on the commitment I made to my hulking 5th wife. She (Bessie) has been increasingly difficult to manage and in general, a bit of an overweight wild bronco.I, semi-correctly, thought this book would help.I note the following from the book's description:
4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.
I am reading books on horsemanship.I had seleted various authors and cooresponding trainers. Each offer styles that work. Each are similiar. The difference is the preentation of the material. I have a dog and have brought him back from the meanest one I ever owned. He was abused and he has found a very loving home. He is no longer mean, showing his teeth on every approach. The things I see in horse training are very similiar to how I work with dogs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new horse owner
I am new to riding and just recently bought a horse. This book, together with "How Your Horse Wants You to Ride," has been a great help to make sense of all the well-meaning advice and my observations.

When I started riding, I asked an old cowboy to teach me to ride. He told me, "Keep one leg on each side of the saddle, and you stay in the middle". Lesson over!

This was very easy to read and extremely informative book.Couldn't put it down until I finished it.
5-0 out of 5 stars John Lyons IS the best horse in the paddock!
As a professional horse trainer who lives her craft, I give John Lyons a TON of credit for making me the horsewoman I am today. John is known as America's Most Trusted Horseman and I'll take it a step further and call him the guy who writes THE how-to books on training. John's not a bells and whistles kind of guy, just one heck of a great trainer. If you purchase only one book on horse training, I suggest this reasonably priced book that beautiflly illustrates how John builds a foundation of trust and respect. If you are able to apply the basic principles illustrated, you will be able to improve any horse, regardless of age or experience - and I mean that for both you and your horse. The book features 20 progressive ground-work lessons to develop your horse into a reliable, accepting partner. I Give It 4 Hooves Up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have this book and have used some of the things in it. It's not really what I need for my horse. She's two, really hyper, green and distracted. The instruction in the book is great. I just needed more of a detailed...do this, this might happen, fix it like this...book. I'm new at this. She's the first horse I've tried to train. I've been around horses for most of my life but training is alot different I'm learning. I have a new baby horse on the way though and I know this will be an invaluable resource for training her(or him). Along with Dr. Miller's Imprint Training. I would recommend this book. But I have really found alot of help in Clinton Anderson's new book. With all these books combined my horse and I are doing good and I know we'll both learn alot. It's a good book and valuable addition to anyone's library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Western Riders too
Even though I ride western, 101 Dressage Exercises has helped me create more lift and forward motion in my horse while retaining flexion. I especially liked the chapters describing different stretches and massages beneficial to your horse. I also recently bought the author's DVD, which is also really helpful. It goes into more depth regarding work-in-hand, and helped me pay closer attention to my horse's muscular development.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dressage Exercises
Yes there are 101 excercises, but no instruction on weight distribution and rein contact. It is mearly a list of things to do such that on a sleepless night I could come up with the same patterns. I would use it for ideas in a class so that I could keep things fresh.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as 101 jumping exercises
This book is a great help to plan and diversify flat work and seriously move forward in dressage. But it lacks the step by step progression plan that, in my view, makes 101 jumping exercises so much better than this one. It tells you what exercises to do, but not how to teach your horse how to do them. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars In an enlightened age, Cherry is still old school
Cherry Hill has come up with some neat little exercise books to offer you training ideas. But she has some outdated ideas on horse training. Compare the advice you get in her book "The Formative Years" with some of the more enlightened trainers published in the last 20 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to your equestrian library.
The number of excellent reviews for this book reflect the application to riders of all levels and disciplines. The most valuable aspect of this book is that it encourages the rider to formulate a plan for their schooling sessions and make a conscious decision not to do the same thing day in day out - something we are all guilty of on occasion. Make your schooling sessions more fun for you and your horse with this informative guide. ... Read more

I highly recommend this book to all of my lesson students.I strongly feel that it helps the to progress more smoothly, and also have less "plateaus".I feel that any rider regardless of their chosen discipline should read this book.It really explains the principles behind riding correctly. This was a book that I was required to purchase and read at the equestrian university I attended.Again I highly recommend this book.It is easy to read and easy to understand. Plus it has very good illustrations to clarify points.I hope this review is helpful.www.horselogic.net

I have found the Pony Club Manual for beginners to be a very helpful teaching tool - the illustrations are helpful and well-labeled, and the layout is easy to follow. The information is widely accepted as correct, and the text is well-written for the 10-15 year old ages. I include a manual in the price of all my beginning horse camps for 10-14 year olds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful and Immensely Enjoyable
As an Equine (and Human) Therapist, I have to connect with horses in a professional setting quickly in order to do my job effectively whereby the horse can gain the most benefit in a limited amount of time. While there is definitely an innate ability one either does or does not possess in connecting with animals, Ms. Marks can help hone your skills and teach you safer horse handling. This helps make the horse feel more secure in your presence.A horse that feels safe will act safely.I feel strongly that even the most advanced horseman can benefit from reading it and have placed it on my "recommended reading" list at horseholistics.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!
If you could only buy one horse book, this would be it! This is a "must have" for all horse owners - I cannot stress this enough. I have read several books, but this one is my ultimate favorite and stands above the rest. We need more writers like Kelly Marks who truly understand the nature of the horse and how to handle and care for them humanely. If you do not own this book, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. You will be so amazed with the knowledge you will gain. For example, for behavior problems, this book teaches you to understand what your horse is trying to tell you, and to look to yourself for the answer, instead of looking for that quick, possibly inhumane, solution. She wants you to ask yourself, "Why is my horse doing this," as this is an important basis to determine a solution. Her psychological perspective will knock you off your socks. Not only will you have fun learning about your horse, but you will also have fun learning neat facts about yourself. She also provides excellent exercises that will help you to successfully build a wonderful relationship with your horse. This is a great book.I liked the content and was able to get good advice on riding and taking care of my horse. It had been some time since I had ridden a horse and the review was very good for me.This book is great for beginners or advanced riders.

4-0 out of 5 stars BACK IN THE SADDLE...FOR THE FIRST TIME!
HORSES FOR DUMMIES does an excellent job of introducing the horse lover to the ins and outs of horses and horse ownership. The book paints a fairly accurate picture of all that is involved in getting started, covering the gamut of gadgets and tack necessary, a variety of veterinary issues, housing, feeding, training...you name it. A good, sound preliminary overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in years
I picked this up (reluctantly) at the library on a whim, assuring myself that should the author become too self-pitying too quickly, I would abandon it.I simply don't enjoy a lot of boo-hooing about horrible childhoods. To my pleasant surprise, I devoured the book in less than 48 hours, and understood the author's connection to her horses.I can't remember the last time a book had me laughing, feeling, and crying, all the while hoping that the experience just doesn't end. It's quite a ride for just 250 pages.....If you're a horse lover, or have suffered through the loss of a loved one, this is one that you shouldn't miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm and heartfelt
What a pleasant surprise to find this book.Beautifully written and wonderful to read.A really lovely, heartfelt book that brings tears to the eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horse Housing
This is the best book on the subject that I've seen. The topic is presented in a professional way so that an amature builder can understand. It's accompanied by color photos and simple professionally drafted diagrams. I would recommend this reference to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positively - A Pragmatic, Professional Resource
Horse Housing provides pragmatic advice on building and remodeling barns and sheds. This is a first rate publication offering the reader wonderful photographs and easy-to-understand illustrations combined with top notch writing by wordsmiths, Richard Klimesh and Cherry Hill.As a Texas State Certified General Appraiser of real estate since 1977, including rural properties, I need to be up-to-date regarding the details of what constitutes well-constructed horse facilities. This excellent book is a professional resource that facilitates a more precise completion of my assignments. Positively, this book belongs on your shelf when you start your next stable, barn or shed project!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Not Just Horsing Around!
As a State Certified Texas General Real Estate Appraiser, I have had the opportunity to view improvements such as barns and stables on numerous rural properties."Horse Housing" is an excellent resource for rural appraisers.I'm not just "horsing around" when I say that if owners of some of the properties I've viewed had utilized tips in this book during their construction project they could have built a superior instead of poor or average structure .Texas is home to more than 1 million horses, about 15% of the total U.S. horse population. However, while people tend to picture horses in rural settings, the counties with the largest numbers of horses are in metropolitan Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio. So this book's guidance on zoning, building codes, and ideas for building an attractive/functional structure that is homogenous to an urban neighborhood is vital to a property owner/investor.It sounds like the reviewer from Michigan should have contacted her local Home Depot or lumberyard for advice on building stalls rather than expect detailed instructions in "Horse Housing." ... Cherry Hill has done it again. Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage is a must- have for all horse owners. It includes grooming tips, a barn-care schedule, and even a suggested layout for your farm! It also includes tips on choosing land.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scratches that itch
Ms. Hill has written a book that fits in well with the psyches of horse-lovers--those who may have just one horse, a herd or stableful, or know that someday they will be a horseowner. It's a book to inspire, inform, encourage, and gently correct when necessary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Save your money.Spend time with your horse.Go to an actual clinic or trainer if you can afford it.Parelli's writing is difficult. The concepts are difficult to understand and there is little practical or useful information.Horses are fairly simple.Parelli makes it sound exotic. It's not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man and horse unite
I would recommend or even make it mandatory for everyone even thinking of going near a horse to read this book. Pat Parelli gets it from the horses point of view, and makes it easy for us to get it too. I have a 2, 3 and 4 yr horse. I have worked with all of them utilizing the theories presented in this book. I have also bought his partnership level 1 and the tools to go with it. It works, my horses are responsive and a joy to be with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Popular but expensive and often unsafe
Mr Parelli writes in a self-opinionated, pompous style about horses, trying to give the impression that he is the guru of all things equine. While his methods have undoubtedly enabled a large number of people to improve their relationship with their horse, one must remember that there are untold millions who have a wonderful relationship with their horse which owes nothing to either his expensively-marketed system or the costly, cutely-named gadgets which seem to be an integral part of this.
