4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
I got this book so I can better understand what the heck the vet was telling me about two of my ferrets. It is a reall good resouce for pet owners to learn more about the different medical conditions that will come up with owning a ferret. However, be warned!....This book explains thing in terminology that a vet or a vet tech will understand. It is not a book for the average person per se, but it did help me ask the right questions and to be better informed. One vet I talked to uses this book as a reference quite often.I enjoyed going through this book and it was very educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ferret Owner ** Must Have ** YOU are responsible for providing the best care.
As a ferret owner, you have the responsibility to know what diseases or cancers your ferret could get, and for making sure they get the proper treatment as soon as possible. Early diagnosis is the key. This is one of the best books you will find and it's more than worth the money invested. Every ferret owner should have a personal copy. Check with your vet to see if they have a copy as well, this is an awesome Christmas present. Read! Highlight! Consult! Together, you can extend the life of your ferret.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great rabbit care book
If you are new to bunnies or just want a thorough book on rabbit care, this is a great one.It covers every topic imaginable!I have found most "Dummy" books to be very informative, and this one is no exception.I would like a few more color pictures of rabbits, but other than this, the book is terrific!

5-0 out of 5 stars TWO CAUTIOUS THUMBS UP!!!!!
This is an outstanding book. However, I am concerned that readers will take its title as a suggestion that it is actually OK to let a dummy have a rabbit. Well, it's not!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good General Care Book
This is one of my favorite reference books for rabbits. The book covers all aspects of rabbit care from getting a rabbit, to housing, feeding, training, behavior problems, illness, and death. The format is easy to read and specific information is easy to find. The Appendix offers some great resources on education, activities, rescues, publications, shopping, and registries. The book brings together both ARBA and the House Rabbit Society. It knocks neither and presents both sides; so its a safe pick-up for a believer of either spectrum. I recommend it in addition to "Rabbit Health in the 21st Century" by Kathy Smith as the only two books a beginner needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
I had read a few other rabbit books after adopting Sofie, but this is by far the best.It includes the most information and has helped me better understand the newest member of our family.Whenever I have a question, this is the reference I go to for my answer.I highly recommend it for anyone that shares their home with a bun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living With A Bunny
Some years ago, I had a house rabbit, but didn't know about this book. There were plenty of books about raising rabbits in cages for meat.
5-0 out of 5 stars House Rabbit Handbook: How to live with an urban rabbit
This is the very best rabbit book on the planet. It is full of great information, and is the perfect handbook for anyone who is thinking of having a pet rabbit or has a rabbit (or more) already. Other books out there are full of old fashioned out-dated information or are geared to breeders. This book is the bible of pet rabbit information, if you have a rabbit and think you know everything, think again, and buy this book. This book covers health, nutrition, behavior and how to "rabbitproof" your home. It also shows us that rabbits have wonderful personalities and an inquisitive nature, so bring them into your home and let them be apart of your lives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes short on histories of individual breeds, overall a wealth of information
I was initially a little disappointed in this book, as I was expecting more history on individual breeds, but the sheer number of breeds, current and extinct, makes that a mammoth task for any author, even one as knowledgable as Mr. Whitman, to contain in one volume. As it stands, his rather brief histories on the breeds in the book makes for interesting (if not in- depth) reading and also makes this a valuable book for anyone interested in domestic rabbit breeds. I'd like to see a companion volume by the author, perhaps focusing on histories of the current breeds, to allow the author to fully explore the potential of this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want a rat?BUY THIS BOOK!
This book should be named "Training Your Owner- Guide For Rats."It gives great information for first-time rat owners on almost every subject, including housing, feeding, picking your rat(s), playtime, and training. Most of the information in the training section is pretty basic, but it gives lots of ways to expand on and personalize your rat's training.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth the money for anyone interested in rabbit health
I HIGHLY reccommend this book to anyone interested in rabbit health, veterinarian, pet owner or rabbit breeder. I am the latter and found this book to be incredibly useful. One will need a basic knowledge of general biology to get their way through the book. I've raised rabbits very successfully for seven years. After reading this I changed many things I thought i had been doing right but now, thanks to the book, I am getting even better results. Its well worth every penny. I've won awards for rabbit knowledge so I had no idea that I'd learn a thousand times more from this book. i've actually taught our veterinarian a few things as she is the one who recommended the book to me. I've learned the most amazing and useful facts that have worked wonders, and they are the simplest things. Who knew that regular honey had healing properties strong enough to cure my rabbits severe case of ulcerative pododermatitis? he was so bad off the vet thought that i was crazy to not put him down. but I'm happy to say he's very much alive, 4 months later and is able to live an almost normal life. this is only one of millions (I mean MILLIONS) of useful little facts that will completely changed the most skilled rabbit fancier's way of looking at things. this book has saved the life of one of my rabbits and has given me sucessful suggestions for treatments to several other problems that even my vet who is a 25-year rabbit breeder herself didn't know. i urge you to get this book. It really can save the lives of rabbits and teach the most knowledeable person many new things

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook of Rabbit Medicine has much good information
Rabbit medicine is a difficult subject to cover.Although our knowledge has increased greatly in the last ten years, there is still much we do not know.Harcourt-Brown does a very good job of describing medical problems that are common in rabbits, and provides information on treatment. She also provides valuable information on biological characteristics and husbandry.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and Disorganized.
I bought this book when I decided to adopt two sows, based on the reviews this book got.Later after I got the pigs I did some more research and discovered the Cavy Cages website and the Guinea Lynx medical online resource for guinea pigs which included a highly moderated forum so one can read the most up to date information on cavy care.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top Recommendation by TX Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue
A must read for any current or potential guinea pig owner! We (the TX Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue) recommend this book to all our new guinea pig adopters.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best guinea pig book!
This is one of the best guinea pig books out there. There is a lot of information and many pictures to go with it. Being the owner of six guinea pigs, I do like to read a lot about them. I was trying to find a book that contained more than just words and cute pictures. (Although this book is packed with great pictures!) I had a skin condition on a newly acquired pig, and I really needed a picture or two to help me figure out what I was dealing with. This was the ONLY book out of the ten I own that showed pictures of two of the most common skin conditions - ringworm and mites. Although I do have a knowledgeable veterinarian, I do like to have something on hand that helps me to recognize common conditions so that I know when it's something I can treat or when it needs a trip to the vet. (This time it did - mites!) I wish I had bought this book early on in my guinea pig ownership. I recommend it to all guinea pig owners. ... Read more

I have a pet rat, and this book was helpful. I especially liked the chapters telling about games you can play with your rat and showing them. It was also very helpful on food, cages, and health. I would recommend it to people of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for the Basics of Care

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" book for rabbit lovers
As a rabbit lover, I often feel that my favorite animal has slipped under the radar in terms of intelligence, affection, and worth as a house pet. If you have a pet rabbit, this book is for you! The first few chapters were veryentertaining and it was fun to read about bunny stories and antics. But soon, I found myself gaining a deeper perspective on my beloved bunny-friends and learned a lot about them and how they are perceived in our society. When I finished reading it, I found myself looking online for a way to contact the authors and THANK THEM for such a beautifully written book on rabbits...and it's about time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for any rabbit lover!
Really interesting, historially accurate book about rabbits and the different roles they play in our culture.A nice one to add to your collection.I would have loved more photographs!
5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting cultural perspective on the ever- pervasive rabbit
I have always been impressed by this book from the first time I ever read it. It was apparently impressive enough to someone else that I found I had my first copy stolen, and I am now on my second copy. What impresses me most about this book is not that the authors themselves live with companion rabbits, nor is it their myriad qualifications for its writing. It is not their controversial coverage of the commercial meat and pet industries, and neither is it of the research and experimental industries. It is not even the clinical lessons from anthropologic and cross- cultural research. I am most impresssed by the fact that this book was ever written at all. I am most impressed that this book, once written, ever saw publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Potter book by Debby Dubay is a must for the collector!
Collecting is wonderful and documenting a collection is an honor that Ms. Dubay has bestowed on her friends the Sewall's. There are many books on the market that go into Ms. Potter's life like expert Judy Taylor who wrote the foreword for this book! As a novice collector, of many porcelain pieces, this is the first book I could find that has the values and is actually a useful price guide for the diverse Potter collector. I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know How to Tell When Your Rabbit is Sick
Since rabbits are prey animals they hide illness really well. That's why its important for rabbit keepers to know how to see even the faintest signs of illness and what they mean. The book educates the reader on common illness and their treatments and more chronic illnesses. The author covers drugs, how safe they are, and what they do and discusses alternative medicine. The book has also been reviewed by a vet before publishing so the information can be trusted. This goes beyond what a standard rabbit care book, this is a rabbit health book. Use it as a supplement to a good rabbit care book like the House Rabbit Handbook or Rabbits for Dummies. I recommend this over the Rabbitopaedia, which has incorrect information in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read About Common Medical Problems in Rabbits
This is a wonderful book for any bunny parent who wants to learn more about specific rabbit illnesses. I have referred to this book quite often when one of my bunnies seems "out of sorts". The chapters include Being Prepared, Common Rabbit Health Issues, Chronic Ailments and Aging Bunnies, Care of the Chronically Ill, Diagnosis and Conventional Treatments, Alternative Medicine, Knowing When to Say Goodbye, and Coping with Loss. When you know more about common rabbit illnesses, the more prepared you'll be if something does happen to your bunny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars solid medical advice
This book was written by a veterinarian and is recommended by my veterinarian. It offers great guidelines for medical care and makes medical conditions easy to understand which helps me work better with my veterinarian. In addition, there is valuable information on behavior, training, diet and housing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading medical information!
Ithought this book was great.I read all about the rabbit diseases, so when this book said that a certain symptom was normal I ignored. Now my rabbit is dead, and I know to go to my vet.Good as a starter book, but only that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all bunny parents
I bought this book before I adopted my first rabbit, just to make sure that I could handle whatever responsibilities come along with having a pet rabbit. The book gives you advice on which breed is best for you, what to expect as your bunny grows, what to feed, what not to feed, recommended toys, behavior interpretations, common rabbit diseases, symptoms and treatments.I still refer to it whenever I have any concerns.Nothing will substitute a vet visit when your bunny is sick, but you can at least have an idea when a vet visit is necessary.I also refer to this book as my bible. The information is concise and easy to understand, and also easy to find, as the book is very well organized. The only suggestion I would make is to inclue a picture of a Flemish Giant, because that is fast becoming a very popular pet breed.Other than that, the book is perfect. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TO VET.TECHNICIAN!!
I'm a freshman in veterinary medical college. And I go to my seniors'animal hospital every weekend for studying and assitanting them. Before Iassitant them, I had to know about treating animals with the right way. Then my seniors gave this book to me. I think this book is very good forVet.technician. This book is really detailed for every part of the way oftreating pets. I am sure that this book will be helpful to you, veterinarytechnician or a student often doing assistance in hospital just like me.But i am sure it will not help any junior or senior studying veterinarymedicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy effort
This book reveals a good intent that fell slightly short. The authors evidently know their stuff very well and describe many procedures with meticulousness. However, necessary details are missing on ocassion, likewhere to locate the vessel they recommend to inject. The illustations aresatisfactory but sometimes insufficient. One wonders whether photographscould have been better in these cases. I missed some procedures that arecommon in veterinary clinics today like x-rays and some small surgerytechniques that are common in a clinical setting. For examaple, I wouldhave liked to find some pointers on how to operate an x-ray machine. Thebook is very useful and well worth buying it, but the authors couldmakeit even better if they surveyed the needs of their colleagues beforeattempting the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Clinical Procedures on the Dog, Cat and Rabbit
I am a director of a veterinary technology program and this is a required text.It outlines the "how-to-do" of procedures as simple as cephalic venipuncture to complicated procedures such as gastrotomy tubeplacement. The value of this book lies in the fact that it lists everysupply or piece of equipment you will need to perform a procedure and thenwalks you through it step by step. The illustrations are awesome.Thisbook would be a valuable reference for a practitioner or technician whowants to perform a procedure for the first time or needs a refresher on theprocedure. The inclusion of rabbits to this edition is a welcome addition asit outlines procedures likely performed in practice. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I don't reccomend this book.
I would have given the book a lower rating but it was only bad because it was so bland. The author assumes that the reader is a seven-year-old and about 20% of the book is baby-talk. It doesn't go into much detail about training. In fact, "The Hamster Handbook" by Patricia Bartlett (also sold at amazon) goes into as much detail about training a hamster. This book doesn't include much other information about hamsters other than obvious things and is mostly vague. I don't recommend this book, but highly recommend "the Hamster Handbook."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for young hamster owners - buy it before the pet!
This book is written mostly for young teenagers and will be great at interesting them in something not electronic!3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Standard
This is a pretty standard hamster care book. The writing style often gets a bit insipid, but the information is gotten out.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Storey's guide books...
Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits is one of the better written Storey guides. By that I mean it reads a bit less like a textbook. The author adds a bit of humor, which keeps it from getting boring.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Rabbit Book Ever!
I have read at least 6 books on raising rabbits and this one is the best by far! (Bennett's other rabbit books are also great - but there is a lot of overlap so only one is needed.) I used his information every step of the way when building my rabbitry, including building my own all-wire hutches. If you are interested in raising rabbits, be sure to join the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeder's Association at http://arba.net/ )It is very inexpensive to join and membership includes a free copy of the "Official Guide Book Raising Better Rabbits & Cavies" 256 pages and another great book. The book itself is worth the membership, but you also get a subscription to the magazine "Domestic Rabbits."

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful...
This book is extremely helpful, although it's geared more toward the meat rabbit raisers. I breed NDs, so I obviously don't use the rabbit recipies section! but, if you skip over the meat rabbit sections, this is an extremly helpful book for any breeder. For instance, I bought a rabbit from a lady who had just bought the rabbit from a not-so-nice man. the man had claimed that he had not bred the doe, but the lady didn't beleive him. So, I ended up with a rabbit that I didn't know if it was bred or not! But this book explains, in an easy to understand way, how to tell if the doe is pregnant or not, and now I'm fairly possitive that my doe IS pregnant. So to sum all that up, I highly reccomend this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Can hopefully find something better
I have owned snakes but just bought my first ball python.I picked up this book at the pet store and read it cover to cover--a couple of times over. While it offers some good information to start, it leaves out so much.It leaves out common sense info that the new ball python owner will search high and low for.Such as: what do those rotten little mites REALLY look like, what are some real ways to REALLY get rid of them, what humidity level to really strive for--in actual numbers, when the first shed will occur, the fact that they are supposed to have "wrinkled corneas" (he didn't fail to shed his eyeball), how to gauge when your baby ball is ready to move from fuzzies to hoppers to adults, etc. After doing a lot of day-to-day research to supplement this average book, we found a FABULOUS vet who has personally owned and cared for hundreds upon hundreds of ball pythons.(If you live in/near Murrieta, CA, email me for her contact info.)I am really looking for a new book that will give me more confidence and comfort that I am caring for my sweet snake much more properly. And thank goodness for my vet!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy a better book called `the ball python manual`
I read both books. Whenever I encounter problems , I refer to the ballpython manual. Many pictures posted are Boa constrictors. All theinformations in this book can be found in web sites.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay book.
This is a good book to own but should not be the first in your collection. It has excellent photos and can be very good for a reference but I find some of the information in it is inaccurate compared to other sources ofinformation, which is why I don't think it should be your first Ball Pythonbook. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't help me...
I got this book from the library, after my shipment was canceled by the sender.I am happy I didn't pay for it, as it did not help me at all.I wanted to know why my rabbit did normal things, like running around our legs, pooing around his litterbox, ect. This book only covered major problems that people might have with a rabbit, like aggressivness, stealing food or clothes, and fear.If your bunny is fine, get it from the library. If your bunny has some issues, get it from the libary, and read how to stop it.If your bunny needs a lot of help with many issues, then I think the book would be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone with rabbits.
This is the most comprehensive easy-to-read book on rabbit behavior I have found. I've had rabbits for five years and read a lot about their behavior. However, this book taught me so much more. I now have a much better understanding of why my rabbits do the things they do. What I especially like about this book is that it addresses issues for both indoor and outdoor rabbits. I didn't realize how many mistakes I was making when I let my rabbits "roam free" outside in nice weather. For example, I did not realize that vast, open spaces in the outdoors are frightening for rabbits, especially if they don't have some enclosure in which to hide. I will not make that mistake again.5-0 out of 5 stars Help! My rabbit is Driving Me Crazy!
Rabbits can be irresistible. It is not uncommon for people to visit a pet store or go to a county fair and come home with a rabbit. How much trouble can such a cute critter be? Plenty! Rabbits are curious creatures that seem to get themselves in trouble all of the time. Since rabbits are "prey" rather than predators, they act quite differently from dogs and cats, which often requires a different approach to care. Rabbits also have very distinct personalities. The personality of a rabbit needs to be taken into consideration when owning a rabbit. With know legible advice, rabbits can be fantastic pets. Books such as Why Does My Rabbit...?can be indispensable in caring and loving a pet rabbit.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book with a lot of cute pictures!
This books is full of high-quality, cute pictures of hamsters. But also, the information within it is very good.I've been keeping pet hamsters for over ten years.I read this book shortly after I got my first hamster, and I keep on returning to it for its useful information. The books is very well written.Any new hamster owner will find it full of great information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ranks top 10 in pet guides.
The best guide to hamsters that we have found so far is this Complete Pet Owner's Manual. It also gave me the impression that the series had other successes besides this, after determining the quality of this one. The manual is most assuredly complete, covering: Maintainence, dietary supplements, dealing with the loss of a hamster, and specific behavioral signs. There are more sections in there that are also very interesting to know. These are very specialized and popular pets, and this covers the void for excited owners of their first hamster. If you already own other manuals about the hamster, this one is likely to be somewhat redundant. 4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, useful guide to buy with that pet hamster!
This is a good book that probably ought to be required when you buy a hamster for your youngster. You should buy this one for yourself, and TRAINING YOUR PET HAMSTER for the recipient of your gift! Then all of you can take good care of the hamster, learn more and more with each passing day, and have fun all the while without using a computer game 24/7! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I had pet hamsters as a child, but now that I'm an adult, I've fallen in love with them all over again. "The Hamster Handbook" is an excellent all-around guide to the history, physiology, and care of hamsters. I appreciated the many anecdotes about the author's personal experience with hamsters that can be found throughout the book. I also enjoyed reading about the hamster's humble beginnings and how it made its way to becoming a popular pet. And the chapter on feeding hamsters has been incredibly helpful...I hadn't realized that there were so many different things hamsters eat (they are omnivores, like humans). If you think hamsters are just a disposable pet for kids, you are very wrong. Pick up "The Hamster Handbook" and learn about the amazing and wonderful little creature that is the hamster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Book for your Hamu that you'll ever need
I was so lucky to come across this book! It's deceptively small and thin because in fact, it is chock full of information on every single subject pertaining to hamsters! It takes the basic tenets of any hamster care guide and expands on it tremendously. You get a FULL history of hamsters, a FULL guide to nutrition and health, exercise, hamster language, breeding . . . it even has information on showing your hamster and on hamster clubs and organizations. This book has absolutely everything you will need to know! You are mistaken if you think you can get through it in one sitting!4-0 out of 5 stars Very similar to Barron's other manual.
This Hamster Handbook is very similar in information and binding quality to Barron's Complete Owner's Manual. Slightly redundant, but an essential guide for hamster owners. Barron's is an excellent company that publishes quality pet owner's guides. Their books on Golden Retrievers are also some of the best on the market. The authors have much expertise in this pet and others, and do not hesitate to document it on the page. ... Read more
