5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable
I have read alot of reviews before ordering this book and i am very much a noob when it comes to iguanas and this book gave me such much information. Alot of pet books give you the basic stuff but over 600 pages is insane. When the book arrived i couldnt belive the size of it. I think my favorite part of this whole book is the detailed chapter on an amazing looking habitat you can create. I have searched online for hours trying to find blueprints of a good habitat and this one is by far one of the best. Great book i recommend it. Its much cheaper here then in any store

5-0 out of 5 stars "Green Iguana:..." truely IS "The Ultimate Owner's Manual"
I would like to thank the author for the knowledge I gained by reading this book, "Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual". To this day, I have not found anyone who has even come close to coming out with a book with as much attention to detail or even the amount of time and research that was put into this book. This is a "must read" for all iguana owners!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Iguana book
This is the best iguana book I have come across so far.It has lots of information and best, it is accurate. So many Iguana books still talk about iguana's eating insects- THEY DON'T!If you are thinking of getting an iguana, buy this book first. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Generalizations and exaggerations
"most", "some"...Facts need to be added to support her views, which is what her writings come down to... her views.Stick with other books if you are looking for the way to properly care for your little green friend.Check out 'Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual by James W., III Hatfield'Hatfield relies less on shock value and exaggerations, facts are important.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for every iguana owner
I have had my green iguana for three years and it seems I never stop learning when it comes to whats best for her.I really wasn't aware how poor of care she was receiving until I bought this book. It's helped me help her so many times, and opened my eyes to details I was ignorant about before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners book.
Clear, easy-to-read, easy-to-follow information about turtles and tortises.I purchased this book after becoming a guardian to an Arizona desert tortise. These creatures are protected and found in small areas of Nevada, California and Arizona, and there is not much information about them to be found. This book had more useful information than I received from any other source.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Given that this book is obviously aimed at the beginner it would make sense for the book to offer decent info for commonly available species; mud and musk turtles, painted turtles, cooters, sliders, maybe Russian and Greek tortises, salcuttas, and some others. However, it doesn't. 1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
I purchased this book thinking (hoping) it would be the excellent source of information it is advertised to be; it is not.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful, not the last word
This book has received such glowing reviews I felt the need to add a sour note.It is full of beautiful pictures and has lots of useful information, but it is not as exhaustive a reference as it would seem from its size. The chapters are divided between four authors, with uneven results. The water quality chapter wastes entire pages on step-by-step instructions on how to use a particular brand of water test (they come with instructions,we don't need this in a book). The filtration chapter is devoted almost exclusively to a particular filtration system that chapter's author designs and sells. On the other hand, most of the other chapters are at least adequate, and the koi varieties section is outstanding, with the clearest delineation of the many koi types I have ever read--anyone can tell a showa from a sankeafter looking at the side-by-side comparison. This section alone makes the book worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book for serious KOI Hobbyist
There are not many Koi books in the market.I think this book is the best I ever read.It is very up todate information (technology) especially pond and filtration system. The pictures and diagrams are beautiful and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work
The nature of human beings is to explore, to examine, and to try to understand everything around us. This book benefits our instinctual search for information about the natural ecosystems around us. It provides us with an insight into the world of some of the rarest and most beautiful creatures in the world and lays bare the world in which they live. Anyone who has an interest in herpetology or is simply hoping to delve into the amazing world of reptile study can gain so much from this book and from Phillipe De Vosjoli's other outstanding and contemplative works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Rhacodactylus Book in print
This is by far the best book in print on Rhac's. It covers Crested, Gargoyle, Chahoua, and the Giant Leachianus Geckos among others. It has sections on all aspects of careing for them including breeding. Many helpful photos to demonstrate the various color and structure morphs (especially of the Crested Geckos). The only thing that could be added here (maybe in a second edition) is what combinations of different morphs are likely to produce what morphs. Also some info on on temperature sex determination for incubation temps would be helpful in the future after more research is done in this area. The Authors all have plenty of first hand experience and some of the largest collections of these geckos in the world. All in all, the best book available on Rhac's at this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for any rhacodatylus owner!!
This book is excellant! The text is thorough, and the illustrations are phenomenal. There is virtually no stone left unturned. Every question concerning the husbandry and natural history of rhacodactylus is explored and explained. The authors attention to detail is unmatched. 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable title for veterinarians
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry.Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences.Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques.Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures but dont raise monitors by it,...
The pictures are great and some of the info on wild lizards is good, but dont try to use the info in this book to raise a monitor, it is outdated 20+ year old recycled info. For a good book on natural history get King a Greens book or Harold DeIsle book. Get Daniel Bennets new book for captive husbandry on grassland monitors.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is an excellent overview of the "giant" lizards and touches on their biology and husbandry. It is packed full of beautiful photographs, and all the main families are covered: the Varanidae, Helodermatidae, Teiidae, Agamidae, Scincidae, and Iguanidae.I am always amazed by the variability in skin patterns exhibited by lizards, espeically in the Varanus tristis orientalis. You can feel the author's fascination with these marvels of the animal kingdom and he also gives a brief discussion on their vetinary care. I would have hoped he would have had more to say on the "black spot" problem in green iguanasbut does not mention it. 5-0 out of 5 stars A very well written and thorough book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Knowledge for the True Reptile Lover
Consider yourself a true reptile lover? Then you should concerned about the well being of your pet.A healthy pet is a happy pet.Keep your pet well-fed and in good hygienic condition is essential. However, it is possible that the reptile may be suffering from parasites without our knowledge (such as through food). This book tells the pet lover what are the various parasites, what symptoms, what cures, etc.It is truly a good book on the topic.5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone herp owner should buy 2 of these books!
And, at Amazon's price, you can afford to buy two of them--one for you and one for your vet!I did!My vet can't thank me enough, and now I don't have to loan him my book every time I want him to see my veiled chameleon. It would be great to live in a big city with vets that specialized in herps/reptiles; but here in the rest of the real world, there are furry pet vets on every corner who can give excellent medical care to your reptiles and amphibians using Dr. Klingenberg's book.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars dated
INteresting and beautifully presented, but some informations are utterly dangerous,as the advice to give tortoises(Vegeterian) canned dog's food. This can provoque some shell deformation and food deficiences. These informations are dated and misleading for a new owner.Beautiful photos, though, and good understanding of turtles ' behaviour.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lack-Luster At Best
To be perfectly honest, I expected more after reading the other online reviews of this book.Bill and Kathy Love are THE corn snake experts in America, but this book just seems to be a re-hash of their earlier articles and works. The pictures were excellent, but so far as all around quality goes, I think one of the "Philip" experts is the one to trust: Philippe de Vosjoli is a veteran of the field with AMAZING books, and Phil Purser is an authority on corn snakes who is actually a readable writer.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Word on Corn Snakes
This book came highly recommended to me by snake breeders. The material is wonderful, easy to comprehend and THE absolute resource for the beginner or advanced owner.Definite bang for the buck and wisdom shared by folks who have made raising corns on of their life's work. From the hatching to elder years, this book has it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Six Star Rating
I'd give it six stars if I could. It's very entertaining, very educational, complete, and packed with plenty of color photos. The writing style is informal, present-day North American English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Dude thanks the author of this book
I'm the classic "how much is that puppy in the window?" case.I was in New York city walking in China town when I happened upon a bowl full of baby red ears.I just had to 'save' one of these squirming babies. Then I was worry about how to feed, house, and generally take care of my turtle, who was looking up at me with those moist, cat-like eyes while we sat on the subway.I had no idea how big it would get, or what to keep it in, or what to feed it besides the turtle pellets I got ripped off on.4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to red-eared sliders
This book adequately covers the essentials of owning a turtle: housing, feeding, breeding, and diseases. The section on breeding is a little more extensive than in other intro books. A plus is that most of the pictures are in color. One thing missing from this book and others is a discussion of turtle behavior and sensory capability. Do they hear, see, smell, taste well? Do they like to hide? How long do they or can they stay submerged? Apparently and incorrectly, it is assumed this is all common knowledge. While this book will give one a start, owning a turtle is definitely a work in progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Red Eared Sliders
This was a very good book.It taught me a lot more than I used to know.I usually just look at the pictures but now that I've read this book I know a lot more. This book taught me how to take care of them and all of thediseases. If your looking for a good book to teach you every thing youneed to know this is the one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures!
I just want to leave a notation for all who get this book.BE CAREFUL OPENING PAGES!The photos on each page are actually on photographic paper! This makes each photo excellent in detail and color, but this book needs to have pages turned with the care of a photo album, and not the casual nature of a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for new african cichlidists!
Despite all the other bad reviews I think this is a great book to dive into African Cichlids.I have owned an aquarium maintenance service for years and have had only one african cichild tank.I bought a bunch of them and threw them all in a 55 gallon tank.It looked great until the fish grew up.After a year or so I only had a couple fish left, most killed by a large pseudotrophus sp.This book explained why and I was finally able to understand these fish. The book goes into species compatibility and their social behavior and explains why you mix certain species, male/female ratios, numbers of each species required, size of tank and how to keep aggressive ones.I feel the topic is so vast with over 1500 species that no one book can cover everything.I'm finding the most difficult part of African Cichlids is the scientific names - some are very difficult to say much less knowing which ones you can house together! If you have had aquariums in the past and know nothing about African Cichlids I would recommend this as your first book!It really informs the reader of the broad overview of what you are getting into and the problems associated with it.It leaves you informed and, if interested, wanting to buy another book or two, specifically one with photos of all the species like Pablo Tepoot's "Pictoral Guide".

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Much Success With CICHLIDS !
More time is spent on discussing basic aquarium set-up and care, than on Malawi Cichlids.Must have had commercial sponsers, they are mentioned throughout.Other than a beginner at cichlids, nothing much new to be learned.Scientific names are outdated, but in the fast changing world of Malawi Cichlids that's not surprising.Better be up on your metric system, there's not an inch, foot, yard, pound or gallon in the book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Classical Book on Venomous Herpetoculture
Ludwig Trutnau's "Venomous Snakes: Snakes in the Terrarium" has been considered the classical work on venomous snake husbandry in German-speaking countries for years, and is now finally available in English. Translated by Donald Stremme, the original format and plates were all maintained in the English version, with the exception of some of the legality aspects. In fact, several taxonomic updates were undertaken in the English version that had since become outdated in the German version.
5-0 out of 5 stars Full and complete descriptions of 171 difference species
Venomous Snakes: Snakes In The Terrarium by Ludwig Trutnau is finally available for an American readership having been competently translated into English by veterinarian Donald W. Stremme. Providing full and complete descriptions of 171 difference species, Venomous Snakes is beautifully enhanced with 126 color photographs. The highly accessible text describes the behavior and care in captivity of venomous snakes from the Elapidae family (cobras, kraits, coral snakes); Viperidae family (adders, vipers); and Crotalidae family (pitvipers). Subspecies and color variations are expertly detailed as well. Informed and informative, Venomous Snakes is a critically important and basic addition to the professional reference library and supplemental reading lists of zookeepers, herptoculturists, veterinary clinics, and academic library collections.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent beginner book to cichlids
easy to read, excellent introduction to these type of fish, covers the basics of cichild keeping, excellent photographs, touches all aspects of being a cichlid aquarist.....the downside is that each section is very brief, if you desire a more in depth discussion on certain topics you will need to find another book to go along with this one, the other downside is that explanation of different kinds of cichlids is very general and brief...overall, a good beginner book, but much to general for the experiences aquarist ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Crabby Book
With there not being out the in pet stores on how to care for your hermies, this book is very helpful for the novice owner or even for a brush up for someone more experienced.I like to try and read as much as I can.It explains the background of the species as well as how to care for them properly.Thru that, it shows that they are NOT just a disposable pet to live in a little plastic container w/ a 1/4 inch of sand :-(hopefully someday that philosophy will change. They are so interesting and can live a very long time if taken care of properly. It is only a lot of work if you do not have the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you haven't yet chosen a python
Helps in choosing a species, but offers little care advice relating to the care of specific species. Still, I consider this a must-have for its basic information on sexing snakes, helping them shed, and ensuring a proper feeding schedule.

1-0 out of 5 stars Apsolute Waste of Money
What a waste of money. You'd better of reading an article or an expert advise on the Internet than reading the entire book. Which adds to my frustration is the extra cost I encountered on shipping the book internationally.
