5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Recommended Reading
As a dog owner since childhood and an obedience trainer, I found this book fantastic!A lot of what Cesar suggests, I already do.I wish a lot of people who let their dogs run roughshod over them, would read this book.It should be required reading for first time dog owners.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'd Give it 6 Stars if I Could...
While veterinarians are educated in the physiology and biology of animals, the ones who truly understand behavior are the exception.Cesar's education may not be formal, but his methodology makes sense and actually works in practice.Dogs become aggressive, obsessed and phobic when their owners do not assume the role of pack leader.Matching a weak human with a strong dog, with no exercise and discipline, causes most psychological problems.DOGS ARE NOT PEOPLE!Cesar teaches understanding them at their most primal level and treating them as such. There is NOTHING cruel about what he professes.Cruelty is putting a dog down because of preventable behavior problems.Build a healthy relationship between you and your dog by reading and using this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars I WISH I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS
This guy has no formal education in animal training or behavior.Anyone who has had a college level course will know that the method he uses (flooding) is inhumane. It should only be used in very rare instances under the guidance of a trained professional. When done improperly it will lead to even more problems.Do yourself a favor and speak with your vet or ask for a referral to a certified animal behaviorist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to housebreak your dog in 7 days
I love this book.My puppy was only 8 weeks when I received the book and most of it already worked. It is a very informative book and details many different ideas of how to housebreak your dog.The best part about the book is that it is not too long.It is a quick read and interesting to learn about dog behavior, so that the training program makes sense.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for dog owners
We purchased this book a few weeks before we got our first dog, an 8-week-old Boston Terrier puppy. The guidelines in this book were really helpful to us as first-time dog owners. Our puppy is now a little over 12-weeks-old and she is already close to being fully house trained.Even though this book and other books say puppies don't have full control over their bladder/bowels until they are 16-weeks, we have followed the steps in the book since the day we got the puppy. And now she is almost fully house trained a month early.
5-0 out of 5 stars informative and realistic!
I purchased this book (and three others) to prepare myself and my fiance' for the arrival of our new puppy. This is the only book of the four I purchased that actually directly addressed how you are supposed to housetrain a puppy when you work and are not home with the dog all day.All the other books assumed you would be available every two to three hours to take the dog outside, which is, in my opinoin, very unrealistic for most people who work 8 hour or more days and can't hire a pet sitter to stay home with the puppy in their absence. This book provides detailed schedules for people who are able to be home all day as well as people who can't be with the puppy all day long, allowing you to develop a consistent, realistic program for your puppy regardless of your schedule. The book was a very quick read (I read it cover to cover in less than a hour), straight-forward, simple to read, and very understandable. The concepts and principles in this book seem as if they will be easy to implement. This book made me feel more confident that we will be able to work the puppy into our lifestyle (with a few minor changes) instead of having to overhaul our entire lives to be slaves to the puppy's bowel and bladder.I strongly recommend this book to other first-time puppy owners who, like us, want to "do it right" and are looking for strategies and solutions they can implement to raise their puppy to be a well-mannered, obedient, and loving dog. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good advice for dog training
Although I do disagree with some of the punishment techniques suggested in this book( I still haven't read the revised edition), I can still say that this is a great book.Of course this book doesn't replace obedience classes, but it's a great way to start training your dog and learning to communicate with it.I have read it several times and given it to friends who were getting ready to adopt a dog. It has helped me train three dogs, with obedience classes in addition to at home training, of course. It is definitely a classic and a must on any new dog owner's nightstand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dogs are NOT furry children
I have had an earlier version of this and have ordered the latest. I have used methods in this book to raise and train four Dobermans and a Great Dane. As others have said, the negative reviews come from people who have not read the book (one admits just flipping through it ina bookstore) or did not absorb what they read or have bought into the notion that dogs are really furry children. You can discipline your dog (or child) physically without being cruel. Sometimes for your safety or the dogs behavior must be corrected immediately. A physical reprimand (smack undeer the chin) is the fastest way to make your point. As others have also noted, there is so much more to this book than just dog training. The monks are kind, compassionate men who have developed an unmatched understanding of dog behavior through years of study and interaction with them and they convey that knowledge in clear, charming prose. Anyone with a dog or planning to get one should own this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Having a Puppy Even More Fun!
Having a puppy is a ton of fun, but with this book it's even MORE fun!The authors of this book really know what they're talking about when it comes to puppies, how to train them, how to handle them so they feel secure, and how to get that tiny bundle of love fully integrated into your new pack. The real beauty of this book is that by using the systems taught and explained so well in this book, we were able to get our new puppy housebroken in less than two weeks!Caesar's book is a beauty if you have a full-grown or young dog. This one is the CHOICE for the little tykes.A real gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for new puppy owners
I love all the books by Brian & Sarah, but I think this one is my new favorite. It's clear that the authors "speak dog," and the use of space games to communicate clearly with your pooch is, to me, revolutionary. It's such a simple concept, one of those things where you smack yourself in the forehead and say, "Duh!Why didn't I realize that?"
5-0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for training a dog of any age
As with all of Brian and Sarah's books, My Smart Puppy is a delight to read. Easy to follow, personable, and full of helpful suggestions, this book is both motivating and encouraging. While reading it, I kept wanting to stop and do the various exercises with my dogs. Packed with information, this is an easy-to-apply, practical, and FUN book on dog training. The stories about Pip, the authors' puppy, are engaging, and the many photos illustrate the principles and training games beautifully. The space games are a new and much needed addition to the world of dog training, as they teach owners of both puppies and adult dogs how to communicate easily, effectively, and clearly with their dogs in an enjoyable and non-confrontational manner. Through them, a strong, positive relationship is established as the foundation of all training, so that your dog learns built in habits of trust, respect, and obedience. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a puppy or dog of any age. It will help you and your dog understand each other better and have a lifetime of fun together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short but insightful
I was expecting a book when I ordered this one but its more a pamplet . What I did find is what it lacked in length it made up for in concise information . It helped greatly in training my puppy.

1-0 out of 5 stars just such a disapointment
not worth the 10 minutes it takes to read this booklet

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't put all your eggs in one basket
She has some good points for the beginning dog trainer, however she is not right about pinning dogs down. They do in fact do it in the wild, it is NOT always by choice as she states in her book. When looking at books, be critical as everyone has their own point of view.Stubborn thinking dogs like the livestock guardian breeds need pinning at times, though it's usually through play to maintain your dominant possition.

Editorial Review

The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New Yorkmonastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuatesthe essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog'sinstincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the keyto successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978classic guide Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pick it up - you'll keep it.
I picked up this book, determined to be a better pet owner. And I'm grateful to the Monks of New Skete for preparing such a thoughtful, educational text for people like me. This is a wonderful book that taught me a lot about my dog, why she acts the way she does, and what I can do about unwanted behavior. From the birth of these loyal, precious animals to testing for temperament, then moving toward training, I've developed a much better understanding of what it means to work with a puppy. Or rather, to train myself. This text is highly recommended for all dog owners, regardless of age, for it contains a wealth of information that should be shared with everyone before bringing home a loving pet such as a dog. Another great book for dog owners that I recommend is "Cesar's Way" by Cesar Millan

5-0 out of 5 stars louisa
Excellent book for the serious dog lover.A great way to prepare for a new puppy.I have read a lot of books but Monks Of New Skete hit every topic on target. You don't have to be a GSD owner to benefit - they address what breed is best for you and shelter rescues. They take you step by step from birth to help you understand puppy's needs and developmental phase.I have bought this book for several people because I think it's a MUST HAVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
This book specifically talks about German Shepherds but will work for any dog with some intelligence.Read it before you get a dog if you can but if you're like me and you suddenly have a dog and are asking yourself, "now what?" get this book immediately and start reading! It's not very long but it covers everything you need to know. Most important is understanding how to get your dog to respect you.Notice I said respect and not fear.If your dog doesn't respect you or fears you then there's not much chance of actually getting the dog to listen to commands. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, clear and highly recommended
I found this book very helpful. It is clear and thorough and a very good resource for owners and trainers. It is also easily accessible, despite covering some fairly technical material. In terms of the content, Culture Clash is first rate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, thorough
A huge amount of dog books are a slog to read, preachy and unhelpful. This book on the other hand, gives a simple over view of modern training techniques interspersed with humour. As an experienced dog handler I appreciated some of the basic reminders about our dogs being..just dogs... and I think for a new dog owner it is essential reading. Some areas do become quite technical and I recommend those not into the `dog behaviour' thing to skim those sections and quickly move on. Overall though, the number one book in this area now with practical advice balanced against dog insight.

4-0 out of 5 stars Preachy, but good
The teacher of my puppy's obedience class recommended this book to me. After I got through the first half, I found that I really liked it. The first half is ridiculously preachy, especially if you already believe in using positive reinforcement in training. The second half, while still peppered with diatribes against owners who use training collars, random moments of near-anthropomorphic descriptions of dog behavior (a bit much from a book that begins by explaining how ridiculous it is to anthropomorphize your dog), and other attempts to make the reader feel guilty, is also filled with exercises that are extremely valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
The book is well-organized and well-written. I was successful using some of the protocols described in the book to modify dog aggression. This is one of the best books out there on aggression.

4-0 out of 5 stars Four Stars for now, with the potential for Five Stars!
This book actually has a lot of very good, practical, and very helpful information for the dog owner who wants to prevent (as I do) or treat agression problems, especially in agression-prone breeds like spaniels and some of the guarding breeds.I debated whether or not to give this book a five star rating.I settled on four stars for now because of my one "complaint" against the book -- it is a very, very COMPLICATED book to read and utilize. The author, apparently through many years of working with problem dogs, has developed a number of complex systems for treating and preventing agression problems which, while I'm sure will be useful and should work well, and just very complicated for the amateur to use. This is definitely NOT the kind of book one can read in bed when tired. It reminds me of some of my college texts -- a challenging and complicated read, and perhaps a bit on the dry side.I know that when I tried to read it recently, my mind often wandered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful exercises
This book is terrific for owners of any dog.We actually rescued an dog-aggressive dog and actually went to Brenda Aloff for a few sessions. Her advice and exercises helped turn a stressed out little monster into my little princess. My dog isn't magically cured, but by using this book, we've taught her to look to her humans for guidance in stressful situations, instead of just attacking as she would in the past. She knows the rules and was taught them in a completely positive reinforcement manner.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic, pragmatic, easy to read
I strongly recommend this book to any conscientious owner of a fearful dog.Our puppy showed fear of many things at an early age and we are lucky to have gotten a trainer - and read this book - as soon as we discovered this problem. The author points out that dealing with a dog's fear is a LOT of work and that the problems don't go away overnight. She is very realistic in explaining the challenges and setting your expectations. The tools she offers are practical and she writes in plain, everyday English that a regular dog owner can understand. Diligently following her advice has made a huge difference for our dog.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of "The Cautious Canine"
"The Cautious Canine" presents a clear, step-by-step method for changing the behavior of a dog who is afraid of strange people and/or other strange dogs.It is not as clear on how to change the behavior of a dog who is cautious and anxious about everything new that he encounters.

5-0 out of 5 stars great insight to dog behavior
This book is clear cut - straight to the point, and extremely helpful. Anyone needing some advice on how to handle their dog's behavior would find this book worthwhile. It's shorter than I thought, but that's ok - no fluff.

5-0 out of 5 stars A God Send
Our 12 year old Lab/Dalmation mix developed insulin dependent diabetes and within 3 months, overnight, was totally blind from cataracts. We were on vacation camping when we realized something was very wrong! How scary for him and us as we watched him bump into things, not be able to find his food bowls, jump in or out of the trailer, etc. We realized we could not move anything once we had it in place and never took our eyes off of him. After the Vet confirmed our fears, she gave us options: surgery (not guarenteed successful), euthanasia (after all, he is 12) or let him live the rest of his life blind.I was determined to become more educated.I immediately went on-line and out of the few books available on animal blindness, this book was by far the most informative.I have read it from cover to cover and keep it on the coffee table. The book made us realize that it was US that needed to be "trained", remembering that our pet is now dependent on us for guidance.Calm talking and constant reasurance have helped Jack adapt to his new environment. This resource is an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE for the pet owner who accepts their pets blindness as a setback and not a death penalty!

5-0 out of 5 stars Living with Blind Dogs
All vets should know about this book & let their clients know about it when they have a pet that goes blind over time or especially immediately due to trauma. So many helpful hints. It's comforting to know there is "help" available.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
I have been a trainer for many years, and am currently working towards becoming a behaviorist - and I can tell you that Paul Owens offers nothing new to the world of dog training. This book is an average (at best) compilation of training techniques discovered and perfected by other (professional) dog trainers/behaviorists. I've read many, many books on dog training and behavior and this is one not worth purchasing. If you're looking for an interesting read to learn more about how dogs think and why they act the way they do - check out any of Stanley Coren's books (he has many). If you're looking for training techniques - take a class. Honestly, there is nothing better for a dog than to go to puppy classes (with a respectable and knowledgable trainer) where they can be properly socialized and trained. If your dog is having serious behavior issues - consult a professional animal behaviorist. Your veterinarian should be able to refer you to somebody. Good luck!
5-0 out of 5 stars Owner of a Difficult Dog
We tried all the tricks from bribes to choke chains and Paul Owen's method REALLY WORKS. Not only is my dog happier with me for teaching her usng a kind method, I am happier too because my dog really listens to me. This book is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars everybody's happy
I adopted two puppies at the same time and have been using this book to train them. They are now 5 months old. My husband and I can pick a lesson and we both see the correct way to teach the pups. By each of us following the same recipe, the pups are learning rapidly and aren't confused by each of us having our "own"way to train them. The pups are always happy to see the clicker come out and my husband and I are having lots of fun, as this is the first time we have dogs that actually do tricks! One of the best investments we have made since we got the puppies.

My kids don't know the writer/illustrator from a hole in the wall -- but I have to re-play the Bacon Brother's "Pots and Pans" and that other hot rockin' tune that has something to do with broccoli(eieieieie!) over and over.My three kids have formed their own backseat air guitar/drums/whatever band, they've memorized the lyrics, they're getting along and, when I gaze back at them, they're NOT brain frozen, dull eyed focussed on a little screen tv watching a video.Movin' and Groovin', baby.I love it, so do they. ROCK ON, DOG TRAIN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rejoice, Boomers.Rock 'n' Roll is hear!
Tired of listening to your G'childs "Wee-sings" & Raffi? Do we really have to listen to these again...& again & again
5-0 out of 5 stars Great sequel!
This book delivered exactly what I expected from a sequel to Philadelphia Chickens and Rhinoceros Tap (as well as Pigorian Chants). The kids just love it and the songs and music are good to listen to for adults as well. While they can be silly, they are contemporary and inspire, rather than grind on your nerves like some other kids song books. Definitely worth a look and listen many times over. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Puppy Book
Every single thing that we read in this book was useful, and worked too!I would highly recommend this book over any other for training any puppy, any breed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book -- not enough detail and too superficial
When I adopted my puppy, this book was recommended to me.I dutifully went out and bought it.As I was reading it, it had many suggestions for what you should do but no tangible examples of implementing those suggestions. For example, they might say "don't hit your puppy with a rolled up newspaper" however they don't necessarily give you a reasonable alternative.I believe this to be more of a function of the editing by the "dummies" staff than a reflection on the author. In what I can only interpret as his own editorial comment on the book, my puppy proceeded to pee on this book -- needless to say, after that we threw it out.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, but By No Means A Complete Reference
I just want to lay out that no one book covers everything. A blend of various resources must be examined when venturing out into puppy-ownership-land. This book is good to acquaint you with the basics: assessing your lifestyle, gearing yourself (and family) up for owning a puppy, doing your homework on the breed, where to buy, what to get for the puppy (and your home)puppy stages, common problems, helpful tactics and solutions to said problems and fun stuff: training, games and commands. This book or the Complete Idiot's Guides are fine for this. I also recommend, like others, The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete.

3-0 out of 5 stars European view
From european point of view the drawback of the book is that it describes the tasks of american rules for obedience trial. As we in europe have different set of tasks in our obedience trial the book did not fill the need for specific instructions on those tasks. I was also looking for more structured and simplified clear instructions in the book things are more of discussed through. Still the book was worth the money paid for it. It has lots of grounds for why to do this way. The basics of the book is fluencies on what the obedience tasks are based on and those same fluencies are still usefull with european rules too.

Big suprise, dogs know that we aren't dogs. The gig is up, dogs don't relate to us the way they relate to dogs.Get a book that really teaches you how dogs think and learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best puppy training

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dog Book Out There!
This is the one book that I recommend to everyone, have multiple copies of, consult daily, and donated to my local library. There are a lot of good, helpful books out there with humane, dog-friendly techniques - but this one tops the list!
5-0 out of 5 stars Goof Proof Your Clicking
What a great way to see what potential you have for correcting a mistake before you do it. I am training two pups at once. Sure enough, as soon as one of them gets it, the other does too. So, if I make a mistake they will both learn it. This book handles the individuality of each dog and lets you see ways to better your abilities by zeroing in on potential problems before they occur. I am using it with the excellent Clicking with your Dog book and think the set makes a perfect combination for the joy of clickertraining. Also, little hints like what kind of treats to use, alternates to food, etc. make this full of useful surprises. Also, the advice on how to make the behavior "perfect" lets you know how far to push each activity before moving on to the next. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent training book!
This book is excellent in every way.Melissa Alexander writes in a style that is both substantial and understandable and this is one of the most user-friendly books I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only puppy book you'll ever need
This is the friendliest how-to book I've ever seen. For example, at the end of the semi-scientific chapter on how to test a puppy's personality and temperament, it points out that people have been raising puppies for thousands of years without formal tests. It instantly restored my faith in my home-grown skills while giving me more to think about.Read it at any depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Puppy Book Ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective!Intentionally short.
Patricia McConnell knows how little time many of us have which is why she makes this series of books only 30 or so pages long. She is direct and to the point to solve your training problem without lots of fluff and cute little dog stories. When we have a dog training issue very few of us have time to read a novel on how to solve it. I for one want to cut to the chase and start solving the problem right away. The methods used in this book are clear and easy to apply and they work.My dog has stopped destructive chewing when I'm away and is clearly much happier.Thank you Ms. McConnell (oh and Daisy my APBT thanks you too) A few reviewers gave these books a low rating because they are short. Amazon clearly indicates how many pages this book has and it's priced accordingly.
