I have never seen my husband so entralled by a book before. I can never get him to sit down for 5 seconds but on Christmas morning, he forgot the rest of his gifts and sat and read this book! I was amazed! It contains history with great pictures and facts and he was actually enjoying himself while reading it!5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book, Excellent Read
This book is beautiful, interesting, and a pleasure to read.I don't hunt, collect stamps or wildlife art, but this is a great book.I am truly enjoying it. I especially like the section on conservation, which detailsthe history of water fowl degradation and protection in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Duck Stamp Story Review

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last, a True Guide for European-Bottle Collectors
The publication of Willy's book marks a major milestone in the field of black-glass collecting. It is the first real effort at a comprehensive and authoritative guide on European bottles aimed at a broad English-reading audience worldwide. For years, collectors and others have waited for just such a book to appear. The numerous colour photos are outstanding. The text is clear, to the point, and easy to read. Any collector, no matter where he lives or what he collects, will, after reading the book, be able to pursue his passion in a much more informed way. I highly recommend the book, which should be on the book shelf of every serious bottle collector and student of historical glass containers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch
This book does an excellent job of showing the cream of the crop of collectable 19th and 20th century perfume bottles (and often their presentation boxes). The text is profusely illustrated with small black and white photos, while also containing several full color sections illustrating in detail hundreds of different bottles. The text goes into intricate detail for the novice to expert collector without dumbing it up or talking down. The 16 pages of concise bibliographys at the back are infinately useful, if you are wondering when where why who or how a house started its probably in this list. Jam packed with facts, tips, annecdotes and illustrations by a TRUE expert in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice and interesting book
I know that the writers are savvy perfume bottle collectors. They have incorporated years of experience into this book. That is the reason why that among all the books on this subject, this one is the most appealing. Ihave also used part of her materials (w/permission) to write my book(published in Chinese).

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
As an avid collector of advertisements and literature on perfume, this is the first book I always recommend to fellow collectors. In the past ten or twelve years, many books were published to cater to the explodingpopularity of perfume bottles as a collectors item. Christie Lefkowith'sbook stands out because of its focus on the ART of perfume bottles (hencethe title), rather than their monetary value. Bottles are viewed in thecultural context of their time, with photographs of by far THE best qualityI have ever seen in perfume books. I agree with the previous reviewer, though: too bad the book ends with the fifties. There should be a sequel. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Commercial Perfume Bottlesby Jacquelyne Jones-North
This book is a visual feast for the eyes. The photos of the perfume bottles are wonderful and can make perfume bottle collectors drool with the possibilities. This book can serve as a great educator to the types anderas of the bottles.I believe I have the earlier version of this bookbecause I could not find a referenced photo (from the 1997 book) in mybook.I found several bottles from my collection and I have selected a fewbottles after finding them in the book. The section on patents of thevarious bottles has also helped me date several bottles. The price listsection is helpful but I'm sure it is outdated. It has helped me when Ibid on-line for a bottle to insure I have not drastically under or overbid. My only criticism would be that many of the bottles are veryexclusive, rare and very expensive bottles that the beginning collectorcould not hope to possess. It would also be helpful to have a few more ofthe brand name perfumes from the past.Nevertheless, I have neverregretted purchasing this book and I would recommend this to any collector.

4-0 out of 5 stars Commercial Perfume Bottles
The photographs in this book are outstanding. It is well written and has an excellent price guide. I thought too much space was taken up with vintage perfume ads. Some perfume collectors also collect vintage ads, butthere was no price guide for these ads. I think without a price guide itwas just filler. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I have seen better, but I have seen worse!
I just bought 4 different books on collecting bottles and the one thing this book has that the others do not, is lots of pictures. This REALLY helps especially when you are a beginning collector like myself. The descriptions are a bit short (for example, in other books they tell you size and color of the specific bottle) while this one usually does not go into that amount of detail. But for [price], this book really surprised me.I have to say that even though it does have its downfalls in lack of detail, it makes up for it by its pictures. And trust me, I have 3 other books and they probably contain an average of 20 pictures per book. This one has about 3-4 pictures every other page.I do not recommend this book if you are looking for just ONE reference to go by but if you are buying it as a companion reference, I highly recommmend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of listings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was impressed with the almost 4,000 bottles listed in this book.I wasdisappointed, however, in the limited number of pictures the author used. Several were very difficult to see and the descriptions were rather vague. The book is small enough in size to be taken along when shopping for oldbottles and I find this to be very helpful. In the front of the book thereare very brief tips on identifying, buying and selling bottles.I foundthese tips to be short but informative.I am only a novice to bottlecollecting but I think this book would be good for a beginner or a veterancollector. My favorite feature of this book is its compact size.I likethe fact that I can easily take it with me when I go shopping for bottles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Collecting the Collectors
It is not surprising to come across a person who collects things: stamps, coins, books. No one considers such collecting remotely abnormal, even though a person might get so focused on collecting as to be unable to talk with interest about anything else. Then there are the people who collect erotic items, and that makes alarm bells go off.Of course, the erotica collectors are not as likely to bore us with their collections as, say, Barbie collectors are.For one thing, erotica is interesting to almost everyone who will admit it.For another thing, such collections are usually covert, and for yet another, even though the collectors might be obsessive, they don't get tedious with their stories about their treasures, since they are usually not a topic of conversation.Geoff Nicholson has seen lots of such collections, and gotten the collectors to talk, and reports back in _Sex Collectors: The Secret World of Consumers, Connoisseurs, Curators, Creators, Dealers, Bibliographers, and Accumulators of "Erotica"_ (Simon and Schuster). It's a funny, genial guide to odd (but not sociopathic) people and strange pursuits; Nicholson has seen plenty of eye-popping material, and while he candidly admits that there are some things he has seen that he wishes he could excise from his memory, he does not include such stuff in his descriptions. The book reflects his experience in researching it: "I've seen a great many things that were sexy and fun and beautiful and fascinating, and I wouldn't have missed them for the world."His enthusiastic book is much more about collecting than it is about erotica or sex.In fact, he dismisses the argument about differentiating between what is pornography and what is art by saying that it doesn't make a difference for the purpose of the book; what matters is that someone is collecting it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for reference, but book is full of holes
This was one of the first bottle books I got to start categorizing my extensive collection.I am far from being a novice, however, my end-goal was to price some of my rarer bottles, and this book did that pretty well. What I found disappointing was the total LACK of photos (hardly any), and large gaping holes in sections such as "cures", "medicines", and "bitters".Hardly any of us will ever see a $4000 bottle in our lifetime other than online - but Kovels' persists in only showing photographs of the rarest of bottles. Not to mention, many of their prices are extremely inflated estimates obviously made by someone of Sotheby's blood, not us plain ol' diggers. To be honest, this book helped ID about 20% of my bottles in my bottle collection - so I found it useful, and since it was a gift, even more so - I doubt if I'd buy it myself.More pictures, better categorization, and breaking the book into smaller books with more detailed pictures is what I would do.This book couldeasily be broken into 10 better books with some effort. Novicebottle collectors would be better off trying Antique Glass and Bottle Collectors magazine if you want better information and pictures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kovels'
It had a lot of good information, but hardly ANY pictures to help identify the bottles. The good pictures were of bottles most of us will never see or find. What about the bottles we find at auctions, garage sales etc. Lots of us are NOVICE collectors, and we need more pictures to help us identify what we have. As far as I'm concerned, I've wasted my money. It isn't much help to this new novice. If your a professional bottle collector, this is the book for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fast guide to identifying and pricing old bottles
Organized by bottle type (medicine, beer, etc.), this comprehensive book quickly enables the reader to track down a wide variety of bottles from by-gone days. The authors have wisely included descriptions of variousbottle types and their intended uses. This will help novice bottlecollectors to better research their bottles as the purpose of many bottledproducts no longer holds any signficance to modern folks (this isespecially true for medicines and elixirs that existed before the dawn ofthe Food & Drug Administration). Readers would be better served ifmore pictures could be found as well as timelines regarding a bottler'sproduction dates. But the omission of these items is understandableregarding the overall convenience and ease of using this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference
I liked the fact that it covers a wide range of styles and manufacturers. Not crazy having to refer to the back of the book for pricing.Toomuch work.Easy/cheap for the editor to update pricing but makes for disruptive reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is for the collector looking for scarce pieces.
