3-0 out of 5 stars A Conservator's Review
As a guide book written specifically for lay persons, An Ounce of Preservation has an educational mandate. As such, it is compelled to offer well-researched and accurate information in all details. At the same time, it attempts to simplify a highly complex field to fit the format of a shortbooklet that can be understood by a reader who has never concerned himselfwith document preservation before. The main dilemma of this book becomesapparent at the point where these two goals meet: simplification versusaccuracy - can both coexist? Some critical observations must be made thatdemonstrate how the author has compromised the accuracy of his text byfalling into some of the traps of over-simplification.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the beginning family historian!
With no background in caring for old photos and papers, I was in a quandry over what to do with the box full of items left to me by my deceased uncle. I didn't have the money for a professional to refresh and repair thephotos, many of which suffered from long years of neglect. So I went onlinein search of a publication that would tell me where to start. An Ounce ofPreservation provided me, a true archival dummie, with the groundwork Ineeded to begin the restoration project. As I sent off for information fromcompanies listed in the appendix of the book, I learned more and more, untiI now feel like a blooming expert! I have a great scrapbook of my uncle'sphotos that I can pass on to my grandchildren, and it's a scrapbook thattakes care of the items instead of aiding in their destruction. Without allthe easy-to-follow techniques and many, many leads for more informationprovided in the book, I doubt if I would have ever had the courage totackle the job myself. And since I didn't have the money for professionalhelp, all those precious items of family history would still bedeteriorating away in my closet. I contacted the publisher (to find out howto contact the author) only to learn that a greatly expanded second editionof this book is in the works. I highly recommend this book to anyone whowants to learn the basics -- it was all news to me!

2-0 out of 5 stars An Ounce of Information
"An Ounce of Preservation" is more aptly described as a pamphlet which delivers only the most BASIC information that most people nowadays regard as common knowledge. The reader looking for practical help, such aswhat solution to use to clean a smudged photo from the twenties, will findvery little to go by (no more than a three-sentence paragraph for thecleaning of old photos). This thin book might have been more successful ifthe author had limited his scope and treated his subject in more detail. As it is, it's a lot to pay for text that can be read in less than an hour. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A recommended first book for new knifemakers
Wayne's first version of this book was the first knifemaking book i purchased.Wayne has guided me and been my mentor and friend from the first (approx 4 yrs ). This latest version is one of the best books a beginner could get.All the fotos and diagrams are in color which greatly helps in understanding the lessons. It has new fotos and diagrams all in color. Although this book has approx same number of pages as the original, it seems to contain 50% more info in it. I would reccommend this book to all knifemakers...beginner and experienced.Definitely a 5 star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for beginners
I own both editions of this book. Wayne is a personal friend, and my mentor in knifemaking. It can be intimidating to read some publications and see all the high-tech machinery that some makers use. This book shows that people can develope their passion for making knives without spending a fortune. It is clear and concise, and takes alot of the guesswork out of being a beginner. Wayne learned knifemaking by trial and error, before there were books, magazines and videos on the subject. This book is a must have in the library of any knifemaker. I read mine constantly for reference and inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Film Restoration Review
This book covers in detail the film restoration process. It starts out with information about film, its history and development and how we perceive light and motion. It then goes into the technical processes and into the ethical concerns that arise in doing a restoration project. One of the few books to cover the subject. This book is pricy, but thorough. At times it gets rather technical but overall I learned a lot about film as a medium and the considerations that any film-maker (especially the ones producing only digitally) should consider. It is written in a short section bullet-point format. This localizes the concepts and discussions in concise areas which helps the reader - when the going gets too technical you can skip easily to the next bullet. The books has a section on techniques and case studies too, as well as a comprehensive glossary.Overall I found this to be a meticulous work on the subject. I'm giving it a generous 5/5 stars, mainly because it is one of the only books on the subject, and it does it very well.

This is a one-of-a-kind book! I looked through two dozen jewelry ref. books looking for one like this! The author gives you clear, colorful photos...but also lots of useful information about each designer and company. Ever wonder how to identify whether a Trifari brooch is old or made last year? Ms. Carroll will give you dates of markings on certain years to look for. I've learned so much from this book. Thank you, Ms. Carroll! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ONE TO OWN!
THE BEST BOOK TO OWN. INEXPENSIVE AND PRACTICAL ADVISE ON HOW TO CLEAN AND REPAIR FRAMES,SILVER, BRASS (THE ONLY PLACE I'VE SEEN BRASS CLEANING THAT WORKS) TRUNKS, POTTERY, AND LAMPS. YOU DON'T NEED A WORKSHOP OR ART SUPPLIES TO USE MR. MCKENZIES' RECEIPES FOR REFURBISHMENT OR REPAIR. NO COLORED PICTURES, JUST DRAWINGS, IT'S THE TEXT THATS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE BOOK. IF YOU CAN READ, THINK, AND FOLLOW VERY SIMPLE DIRECTIONS, THEN USE THE PRETTY COFFEE TABLE BOOKS FOR INSPIRATION AND THIS BOOK FOR REALIZATION. I USE IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to do fix it up instructions, also good marketing tips.
This is the most helpful book I've read that in very succinct style tells how to buy, fix up, and possibly resell antiques and other second hand stuff. If you love "shabby chic", but can't afford the prices, this book will make it easier to achieve that look. This book is not forpeople who worry about getting their hands dirty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book on how to fix antiques.

3-0 out of 5 stars KUDOS AND CAVEATS
I bought this book when I needed information on BASIC care of my antiques of all sorts, including reviving leather on furniture and gilding on pictures, as well as polishing etc. To a small extent I got that. But most of the techniques in this book --most notably inthe section on upholstery -- while clear, leave a dangerous impression of ease. For almost any of them, you need a degree of skill that would make much of the advice unnecessary. Don't try upholstering anything from this book or you'll have a dead sofa! Theory is only a small part of handcraft. Even hand's on basic courses aren't enough. incidentally, if you want to clean gilt, say, forget it, though Miller tells you how to regild. NOT a basic care manual, in fact!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth coverage of the topic
If you're someone faced with antique for the first time (like I was), this is exactly what you need. The book addresses all the repairs I'll have to do on my furniture and silverware, lists all the necessary material andtools as well as documents the procedures you have to follow. Highlyrecommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outboard collector's reference
After reading the 2nd edition of Peter Hunn's The Old Outboard Book I couldn't wait to get the revised and expanded 3rd edition. I take the book with me when I go looking for old outboards and swap meets. No better reference exists in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Old Outboard Book
This book has become the "Bible" for most outboard collectors. It has everything in one place. The big list ofalmost ALL known US outboard manufacturers,The price guide which is the only published guide of its kind, developed thru consultation with a good cross section of prominent and active collectors, Great Serial number guides, Spark plug charts, and much more.Peter's style is very readable, with a "story" connected to each brand. Hundreds of outboard collectors keep a copy in their car, while touring the country looking for additions to their collections. Most helpful to identify, and value that Garage sale or Outboard meet, find.HIGHLY recommended, especially for those new to the hobby.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
This book is stretched between a technical manual and a coffee table book way too tight. Hunn covers the larger manuf. with research that could be found on any historical website, and briefly touches on the rare and obscure in general descriptions.Do not rely on this book for technical information.Simply order specific parts lists for the motors you have. I would like to know if Hunn's other book was better as a picture book, as this one was too poorly written to be of any enjoyment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information and lots of pictures!
I like this book because it has an assortment of makers and not alot of history. There are alot of pictures and values which is what I am looking for.The pictures are clear. Most jewelry books seem to have inflated prices on the values of the jewelry. This book doesn't seem to be to far off base. But I'm no expert!I also like that there is a section on "Fakes".
5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book for Jewelry Lovers
Ann's book was such a joy to sit with. She has a beautiful selection of jewels and lots of little known information about various manufacturers.Written in a warm style (after her columns), I just had a great time reading it and absorbing her collecting tips. She has a good variety of manufacturers (some I've never heard of), and tons of pictures (with value prices). Her more than generous array of gorgeous pins and brooches from retro to enamels to you-name-it satisfied even me.My two favorite areas were the great fruit (and vegetable!) pins, and the bakelite and plastics sections. Super, super, super!!And she finished the book off with a section of wonderful vintage ads.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Jewelry Resource Published In 2004!
Ann Pitman's book, "Inside the Jewelry Box"is an indispensable reference. I have over 20 reference books including both books by Brunialti which I like very much. However, I continue to order other books of the quality and caliber of Ms. Pitman's book. Her book,"Inside the Jewelry Box" is my standard for ordering future reference books.

"The most comprehensive book on preserving every type of collectible..." Don Williams, Senior Conservator of the Smithsonian Institution, has written a concise volume dealing with how to preserve everything from baseball cards to furniture. Easy to understand preservation practices. No hard to understand museum jargon. An excellent work for anyone who collects anything or the small museum.

I absolutely loved this BRILLIANT book! I am a long time antiquer/yardsaler and I found the book extrodinarily useful! I have been able to preserve things i never thought possible, like my grilled cheese sandwich with the virgin mary on it! I also learned to never keep valuable coins in a jar where my daughter may be able to reach them and turn them into Coinstart (that silly hooligan). I appreciate the detail the author went to in this work. It is not your typical lightweight coffee table book, but shows an understanding of, and respect for, the various Shaker communities and their many contributions to our way of life, not the least of which is their beautiful furniture. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Old pocket watches explained
The focus is on antique European pocket watches, especially British ones, this being a British publication. The technical history of watches is thoroughly covered, the various outdated watch mechanisms--verge, fusee, cylinder escapement--are explained, and interesting footnotes are included, like the wage records from a 19th century watch shop. A chapter on repair will get you started, and even tell you how to restore the blueing on the watch hands (heat them in a tray over an alcohol lamp). The author has spent much of his life studying and collecting old watches, and has produced an easy-to-read guide filled with interesting and useful information.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very well written summary of the watch development
If you are a "newbie" in the world of watch collecting, this is the right book for you. It focuses the watch evolution from the late 16TH century to the modern quartz watch. It has a lot of graphics and black andwhite pocket watch pictures...The book, however, is, in my point of view, intended for a quick knowledge of the watch's history and mechanics...Itdoesn't cover, for instance, the modern automatic wristwatch. I thinkthat's the best book to read before trying something more techicall. Thereading is very straight forward, but the experts in the field will findthe book very summarized. ... Read more
