5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!I love this book!
This book filled my burning desire to know everything about dollhouses & furniture from the last 50 years. There are no gaps of missing information or omitions of important items in this detailed andcomprehensive book.Quite a relief after seeing an army of inadequatecollector books flood the market.I'll have hours of fun reading this.Myonly complaint is some of the photos are dark or of poor color quality.Iwant to view these things in their full glory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A walk down the memory lane of my childhood!
This book is jam-packed with useful info, great pictures, and a very enjoyable writing style.I found myself constantly saying "I had that -- I remember that -- my friend had that one!"The book has been my constant companion ever since it arrived. What's more, it has sparked a new interest in collecting the old tin litho houses from the 50s and 60s -- items I had all but forgotten when I moved on to 1" scale wood miniatures.Thank you for a truly remarkable book, one which many of my friends will be enjoying, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST comprehensive book on contemporary dollhouses.
Zillner has actually answered burning questions I've had on dollhouses and their furnishings. This is by far the BEST reference I've seen in 25 years of collecting. I highly recommend the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Book Dolls and Values, 16th Edition (Blue Book Dolls and Values)
THE resource for all your doll questions on values and dolls.

4-0 out of 5 stars Misses the mark in several categories
Although the Blue Book is the avid doll collectors' favorite price guide, it contains numerous categories that have not been updated for quite a number of years.China, parian, papier mache, and wooden, some of the earliest dolls in existence, have been gaining in popularity for several years now and the market prices, both at auction and online have been rising considerably. The Blue Book has not caught up with this trend.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE MERCEDES OF DOLLS
Born in 1895 in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, Madame Beatrice Alexander was the daughter of Russian immigrants who rose to become America's premier doll maker. As a child she was known as Bertha, but soon took what she considered to be a more socially acceptable name - Beatrice. This name change was but a harbinger of her determination to excel, to rise above what she considered to be humble surroundings.5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOOK!
BEAUTIFUL BOOK!WONDERFUL PICTURES!IT WAS GREAT HOW MANY SCARLETT O'HARA DOLLS THERE WERE!BUT THIS BOOK COSTS TOO MUCH, IT SHOULD COME IN PAPERBACK!

5-0 out of 5 stars The historical perspective is a real plus.
The photos of Lia Sargent's dolls in this book are, indeed, beautiful, but the real draw is the way Ms. Finnegan, the author of the book, relates Alexander's life to what was going on in the world at the same time.Wonderful historical perspective, which is very unusual in a doll book! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, but...
This beautiful hard-cover makes a very nice coffee table book, but I don't recommend it for someone looking to do any in-depth doll research. The pictures are lovely, but details are scant. In most cases, the doll's height measurements, characteristics, year of production, etc., are noteven listed. She also throws in quite a few new artist dolls and 70'sfashion dolls which don't seem to fit in with the rest of the book and areof little interest to vintage doll collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous volume covering the modern collectible dolls.
This 303 page hard cover 3rd edition identification and value guide contains nearly 800 large full color photos of every type of modern collectible doll from advertising dolls, Alexander, Barbie, to cloth, comic, Effanbee, hard plastic, Hasbro, Mattel, Storybook, etc., etc.45chapters of dolls in all. Each chapter provides an overview of the dollsand what to look for in that type of doll.Estimated values are shown. The pictures are superb- almost like seeing the dolls themselves. With itsheavy lifetime laminated cover, the book weighs 3 pounds !!It's a keeper.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who Knew that Dolls Aren't A 'Girls' Toy'?
As a collector of hard plastic dolls, I'd hoped that this would be a helpful guide to identifying dolls of the 1950s and determining their original accessories. But there are very few dolls depicted and the coverage is inconsistent. There are no dolls in the first selection (for 1950), 2 pages for 1951, none for 1952, none for 1953, 2 pages for 1954, 5 pages for 1955,1/2 page for 1956, none for 1957, none for 1958, none for 1959, 5 pages for 1960 (that year's excerpt from the Wish Book is all dolls), 1/2 page for 1962, 1 page for 1963, none for 1965, 2 pages for 1966, none for 1967, 2 pages for 1968, and 2 pages for 1969. 4-0 out of 5 stars Awe Those Childhood Memories!

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality of projects not too great, but very good photos
I was disappointed over the quality of the minatures featured in this book. They seemed way too amateur-ish and uninventive.I feel the author could have tried a little harder in making more creative and sophisticated designs rather than boring, suburban-lazy type she displayed in this book. The designs reminded me of those ugly crocheted blankets you see in the typical housewife or granny's home. It's a great hobby with alot of potential; unfortunately, the only people who take it up have no sense whatsoever of aesthetics.5-0 out of 5 stars a book full of wonderful and creative ideas
i found this book by chance in waldens. i havealways had a fascination with miniatures and dollhouses, maybe because of my modest childhood. however, my interest in miniatures was sparked by the discovery of thisbook. boulton does an excellent job with explaining the miniture makingprocess. as always, the DK company provides clear and colorfulillustrations on making miniatures. i love this book and would recommend itto anyone who is an advanced miniaturist or novice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Encylopedia? Not Hardly
When I buy doll collector books, I try to make sure they have everything I need to know about the doll in them. Sadly, such was not the case with this book. It had many nice pictures, but as far as being complete and usefull, I'd say it leaves much wanting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi - I'm the author responding to the Green Eyed Velvet ?
Hi - Wanted to clarify a question on the Green Eyed Velvet. Some Velvet dolls had Kerry - colored (or other) green eyes substituted in the factory, in place of her usual purple eyes. It is not unheard of for a company to, very occassionally, substitute a different item during the manufacture of a doll. But it was a very rare occurrence, making the doll a rarity. This is what makes collecting fun! On the other hand, many Velvet dolls had eyes that oxidized to a greenish color, but when plastic eyes oxidize, the color is never uniform and the color is not a true, vibrant green - like Kerry's. To determine whether a Velvet's eyes are oxidized green, or are a true factory sbstitution, the eyes has to be taken apart and cleaned. If the eye remains green after cleaning, it is a true factory substitution. The oxidized eyes will become purple again after cleaning. There have been Velvet dolls who's eyes have been taken out, cleaned, and found to be genuine factory substitutions. These are the dolls that the book refers to. Thanks to the Expert that had the question - Carla Marie Cross ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Crazed Cabbie Collector!!
Although I did enjoy reading the facts about the kids, their orgin, rarities, head mold facts.....and so on.....This book ONLY focused on MIB kids. Even though there are great photos (hundreds of them), several are duplicates and the author consentrated mostly on the beloved #4 head mold. ALOT of the kids talked about were mentioned as *hard to find* and *extreamly hard to find* MIB. I do not believe all head molds and eye/hair color combonations were pictured. I also believe that what one collector views as mint another may not agree upon. For instance, some kids are redressed and out of the box...is that still considered mint in the box?
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference
My second wife (a shrew of a woman if ever there were one) blessed me with three little kippers--and each bore a strong resemblence to a cabbage patch kid (Note: the woman had the largest cranium I've seen prior to Shreck). This encyclopedia was invaluable during the difficult child-naming process and has been a nostalgic reference these passing years since the harlot took the kids (and the pudgy judge-awarded palimony) to Kansas in order to follow some religious kook and raise the bigheads in an "upright" environment.I miss them occasionally, and when I do, I shed my tears with this fine book by my side.Thank you Schiffer Design Books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Artdolls: Basic Sculpting and Beyond
This is a very good book for the serious doll maker. I recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Artdolls
This book is essential for anyone who would like to make Art dolls or any kind of polymer clay figure sculpture. The photography is useful and of a good quality, and the text is in-depth and helpful. I would reccomend this book to anyone, but there are just a few minor things I take issue with.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Teaching, Photography Lacking Somewhat
Good teaching, helpful details, nice stories behind some of the creations but many of the photos are very unprofessionally done.Considering the price of this publication more thought should have been put into the photography.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "baby" doll book
I was not aware (or did not read fully) this is about baby dolls not art dolls which I consider to mostly be adult-ish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Dolls, one look
This is a book of patterns and tips. The dolls are all virtually the same, chubby baby-faced toddlers. There is a male and female version. The infant is the same as the toddler but can not stand. The adult (pictured on the cover) is just slightly thiner and longer then the children. If you are looking for variety, these dolls are pretty much the same (they all look related to the one on the cover) and they are all conservatively or classicly styled.I recommend the book for those interested in the learning the basics of makeing a "baby doll".If you want any other style of cloth doll (such as artisan) you will be disappointed in the constraints of the styling and you will be forced to find inspiration for your imagination elsewhere.Probably more like 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
I've been making dolls since I was 11, and this is the book I've been looking for all my life. Worth three times what you pay. The cover does not do it justice. It has soft sculpture faces that are beautiful and natural. Usually soft sculpture dolls look like old people, trolls or are distorted. There is a baby doll that I am going to double size to make it the size of a real baby, so I can have it wear old clothes. The clothes are also beautiful and easy. Make yourself an heirloom. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Barbie Doll Identification
Good resource. Would have been much better if each doll was listed by name under the category in table of contents. ie; Bob Mackie: Queen of Hearts, etc. and the page number where it can be found. Some Bob Mackies are in the porcelain section as well as designer section and would be missed if you don't know your dolls, which is why you buy the book in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good information book.
I found this book easy to use because it was well organized. I also found the prices to be on target. The pictures are great and they cover most of the collectors dolls. They also give you all the right basic information you would want to know about a doll.
