4-0 out of 5 stars A passion beyond colecting.
The author takes us for a visit to collectors homes, and allows us to have a look at their private assembly of objects, paintings and sculptures they are passionate about. We can view the art in its context, we can see the juxtaposition of objects and furniture as these are being used by its owners, without pretending, revealing more than just the art. We get a glimps at the interior design and decor layered just as life puts them together. Only real collectors can possibly understand the mania they are infected with, not being able to resist amassing

5-0 out of 5 stars Otimo livro
5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this
Marquetry is impressive if you are making a simple flower or a project as ornate as the examples that are given in this book. Covering the art form from the early adopters in France and Italy, he explains in detail the procedures, as well as the tools that are used. When you see some of the pictures of the projects, you will think that you need a lifetime of practice to get to those levels, and maybe you do. They are so elaborate and ornate that you will appreciate what can be done in the art form.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I found this book to be completely comprehensive on the subject of marquetry.Everyone who loves this art form will want to have this in their library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woodworker's Must-Have
This book is incredible! If you've ever seen any of the furniture collection at Colonial Williamsburg, this book gives you all the details on the key pieces in the collection that the tour-guides just can't answer. Each piece is photographed, both exterior view and an interior view(drawers out, doors open, etc...), and full measurements. The best featureis that it also provides extensive history on the style and construction ofeach piece, complete with construction details (down to every lastdovetail!).I picked it up for the woodworking information, but this bookis also excelent for the historian. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars not the best
Found this very hasty in some sections---lazy writing and editing in one place (pages 148-171). They just reprinted an old Stow and Davis office furniture catalog without giving values though they advertise on the coverthat they will give values. This is not the first Schiffer book that hasdone this kind of cheap content padding. I would not buy another SchifferBook, in fact, without really checking it out for padding. Also glaringomissions in content. The chair section has not one mention of the Wassilychair by Breuer/Knoll. Save your money and try another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great sampler.
Encompassing 2000 years of history, and everything from ceramics to furniture to Mao era propaganda, it isn't a comprehensive guide to any one subject. It isn't meant to be; nevertheless it serves as a full intro to the field in one portable volume.Several thousand pieces with prices in Brit pounds (most for museum quality specimens, not the more everyday kind).About 70% b&w, though does include some lovely color sections.Still a bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars First rate analysis of the subject
This is a fascinating and truly readable analysis of the importance of theseveral Williamsburg cabinet making shops and the role they played in thefurnishing of homes of eastern Virginia.Williamsburg was far moreimportant a center of influence in the decorative arts, as it was in otherareas, than it has been given credit for, and this careful explorationbears this out in a very enjoyable way.The photography is splendid, andthe piece-by-piece furniture analysis takes on the air of a detective novelafter a while.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous
I really enjoy this book. I am a woodworker / furniture maker and I read a lot of this style of book. The author does a fantastic job of illustrating each box and providing a bit of background on each box.The photos are all in color and very well composed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and wide-ranging
A lovely book. The title may mislead - it's really what I would think of as large-scale boxes, carcass work.Old and new designs, from blanket chests to campaign chests.Usually enough photos of each piece to give a real sense of it, too.(I hate feeling like I've missed seeing 2/3 of what's there.)

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent purchase if you like chairs and design
The order came in quickly, book was in tip-top condition. You can cnsider this a quality book if you like chairs and the history and the evolvement of design in chairs. The pictures are fun to look at and you can marvel at the creativity of the designers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought it
I make chairs (and other furniture) out of found wood.I bought this book out of profits from the sale of one chair, and within the first 50 pages, I had ideas for several more chairs I wouldn't have thought of on my own.I just look at the pictures; not particularly interested in the history or designer or derivation. If you want ideas for making chairs and you can figure out the construction details for yourself, this is a useful book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Aprobado... pero con lo justo
Interesante como gua general.
