5-0 out of 5 stars Best S&P book around
This book is what I would term user friendly. It isset up in such a waythat you can easily access the information you need.In the back of thebook is a listing of many importing companies and information on them. This is my favorite of all of the shaker books.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book available on the subject.
If you are going to own just one book on salt & peppers, this is the one in which to invest. It is quite comprehensive and very well organized.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will add spice to your collection!!
Mike Schneider keeps raising the bar a little higher--so high that Sergei Bubka couldn't vault over it.When I got the book I showed it to friends and that was the acid test.Over and over I heard, 'My grandma had thatpair,' or ' We have those in the basement...they're worth that much?!?' These people were enthralled with the book. Mike Schneider's book runs fromroutine shakers to really obscure ones to ones that are absolutelyunbelievable. The prices are true and the colors are crisp. Mr.Schneider's previous work caused me to be sure I got this volume--and asalways I am very pleased with his efforts.Schiffer Publishing has arising star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the collector or dealer!
Gene and Cathy Florence have done an outstanding job on this book. The pictures are outstanding and an excellent source for identifying various glass pieces. The descriptions are clear and very informative. My only issue is with the prices quoted. As Internet auctions, such as eBay are now the premier source for purchasing or selling depression glass, prices are drastically lower for most items listed in this book. This is also true for other similar books by other authors as well. As on-line auction sites are now the dominant source for depression glass and other collectables, the average prices seen over time on on-line auctions must be taken into account for future values.

5-0 out of 5 stars An educated collector is a successful collector!!
I recently purchased this book because I not only wanted to start collecting depression glass, but I wanted to know what I was talking about and also what I was buying. The photography is fantastic. The legends are priceless. The summary of each collection provides you with its' history. The valuation of the depression glass pieces allows you to make sound purchasing decisions. This book is excellent for the novice, yet invaluable for the more serious glass collector.Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort
My copy of "The Apron Book" just arrived. I could hardly wait to sit down with a cup of coffee and get lost in an era that seems so long ago, but so close to heart. Earlier in the year, I attend "The Apron Chronicles" a traveling exhibit of aprons and their stories, told by EllynAnne herself! The exhibit was amazing! Aprons do have a voice and they're heard throughout the pages of "The Apron Book". In "The Apron Book" Geisel has done an extraordinary job bringing the aprons to life. Each apron pictured has a heartwarming story filled with love that only an apron could tell. They come to life and it is as if you're there. The tidbits of info scattered throughout the book from what to do about over salted soup to the perfect pocket placement on an apron are a delight. I can't sew a stitch but I've read every pattern in the book! Thanks EllynAnne

5-0 out of 5 stars apron lover
I loved the colorful mix of worn aprons in my mother's kitchen drawer and I'd give anything to have one wrapped around my waist right now. Unfortunately, those aprons are long gone, but as I hoped, THE APRON BOOK brings me right back to the wonderful memories I associate with the aprons ofmy childhood.
2-0 out of 5 stars DIY Cover Up
I too eagerly anticipated reading this book, since I went through an apron-sewing blitz this summer. I was a bit disappointed, however. Although the photos and instructions are helpful (for seamsters more accomplished than myself), the tone of the book is reactionary, with negative statements about working mothers and a lot of nostalgia for the Ozzie and Harriet era. Although Geisel celebrates the rebirth of the domestic arts, she praises the home-as-nest (enclave of traditional domesticity) rather than the house-as-studio (a DIY workshop involving every member in open-ended acts of engagement with economy, history, and culture.) Still, there's some interesting history and some great photos. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A scholarly work on the American Bowie knife
Many knife collectors will welcome this edition to their bookshelves. The high numbers of high quality knifemakers and eager customers in recent years has created a natural interest in the early beginnings of the uniquely American Bowie knife that needs to be satisfied. Mr.Flayderman has heard the calling and has delivered in abundance. There is something for everybody in this book. The quality of documentary evidence is commendable and I even liked thepictures but don't think of this as a coffee table book. There is more here than can be covered in this humble review. The owner of this edition will return to it again and again and will glean yet another glimpse of our American history when the country was young and wild. If knives are of interest to you this book will serve.

5-0 out of 5 stars bowie knife book
I purchased this book as a gift for my uncle. It is well worth the money! It is a coffee table-type book with thick heavy pages and LOTS of beautifully detailed photos. His only negative comment when I gave it to him was, "That is a dagger on the cover!" and He knows his knives!! I guess the publisher doesn't know what a bowie knife looks like.If you like bowie knives or know someone who does, this is a perfect book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowie Book

I was a little leary of spending $80 bucks on a book but than remembered the last time, and did't purchase the "Antique Bowie Knife Book" Glad I did purchase this book I think it is everthing the Antique Bowie Book is and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars most comprehensive book on kitchen collectibles
I bought this book about a year ago, I saw a lady using it at an auction bidding on kitchen items. The next day I ordered this book and it has been my guide ever since, with so many kitchen items out there, fakes and repros, it's good to have a helper to guide you thru a maze of online auctions and fleamarket finds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Johnson Brothers Dinnerware: Pattern Directory and Price Guide
I was especially interested in the different backstamps of the Heritage Hall pattern, I didn't find them. I was very disappointed in the absence of Heritage Hall pieces. I returned the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best got better
An expanded version of Mary Finegana's definitive reference on Johnson Brothers Dinnerware. Her new edition has a larger page format, more total pages, more total patterns, new illustrations, additional supplementary material, an updated 2003 price guide and guidance on how to keep the price guide current. Very highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Inside Story
This book presents an academic approach to the subject of ceramic ware produced by Johnson Brothers during their existence as an independant company. It does not convey the romancethat the antique collect looks for.I feel that Mary Finegan lost an opportunity whilst visiting the U.K. to talk to the very person that could have given her that insight.William (Bill) Norbury worked for Johnson Bros. for 50 yrs. He had that insight as designer and Master engrave and was still alive during her visit. Prof.Jean Zarruchi conveyed that romance during her lecture and exhibition at Keele Universtity, Staffs.U.K. Sept. 2000. Bill's unpublished record of his experiences conveys that insight into many of the designs contained in Mary Finegan's Book. (...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Cast Iron Collecting Book You Should Buy
This is the second book you should buy if you have any interest in collecting classic American cast iron goods. Collectors call this the "Red Book".The first book, "The Book of Griswold & Wagner", is called the "Blue Book", although it looks kind of turquoise to me, and is by the same authors. This edition, with a copyright of 2001, is getting a little out of date for catalog values, but still is a good indicator of relative value. It covers Wagner, Griswold, Martin, Lodge, Vollrath, and Excelsior. There is little duplication between the Red and Blue books, but together they are just a treasure chest of good clear photogrpahs and information that is not available anywhere else. The author is active in the major collecting societies and solicits information, including photographs and corrections, as each edition is prepared.(As an aside, it's hard to comprehend how someone could be critical of a book full of pictures and descriptions of collectable iron.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Bible #2 for cast iron collectors
Unlike steve (ca) review, this book is considered the second book that all cast iron collectors must have. While some discrepancy on some values in the book may be present, values on most items are completely accurate. It is unfortunate that the other review destroys the credibility of this fine book. The "RED" book is the most complete and accurate book on the market for Wagner Ware collectors. This book and the "BLUE" book should be in every serious cast iron collector's resource library.
1-0 out of 5 stars No excuse to not adjust errors in pricing, years later.
Both this book and the "blue" book mislead readers by listing "price values" that are blatently low,-on the very uncommon items listed, even though the pricing errors were brought to both author's attention years ago. Many revisions later, they remain for the most part unchanged.

3-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Wright collectors, if you don't have a previous edition
We've been collecting RW since 1998, and have hundreds of hard to find and many one of a kind pieces.
3-0 out of 5 stars Just the pots, please
I just started collecting Russel Wright dishes, and was looking for adefinitive reference guide to help key out the pieces I had. I thought thisbook had a lot of helpful information about determining pattern andmanfacturing locations, but I was a bit disappointed overall. Though thecover of the book features only pottery, the book itself has examples ofall that Russel Wright created in his long, prolific career-- all the waydown to the radios and lamps. It would be great for the diehard RW fan,but I wished it just focussed on the pottery.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for any beginning Wright collector
I am so happy to have gotten this book.I knew little-to-nothing about Wright, and Ann Kerr's book lays out all kinds of information about the man, the artist, and his art.I haven't had much of a problem without an index,as she has all the information chaptered out, and it is all easy to access. The accompanying photos are excellent and there are many. She alsoexplains any areas which may be ambiguous, such as color, size and shapeanomalies. Due to getting this book, I often know more about the pieces Ifind than the dealers do, as she tries to fit in every piece of informationthat she has, on every aspect of thecollectible items. 5-0 out of 5 stars Super resource!
This book is a very useful resource if you deal in sterling silver flatware as it provides actual photographs, not drawings of the handles of each patter. The other benefit this book provides is that you can identify the pieces based on size -- and accurately call a piece by the proper name. Each pattern has a list of many available pieces and their value.I use this book alot and bought one for by business partner -- anyone who deals in sterling flatware should have a copy!

3-0 out of 5 stars good for a beginning
easy to follow and while this does not have hallmarks or much history, does carry clear pictures of standard patterns and makers.Good for a start and considering how little is out there, not bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Even More Disappointed...
I wish I had read the above review before I spent my money on this book. I think if someone is going to sell an identification "guide" for a specific category of goods and they are only going to cover a representative selection of that category, they should at least be honest about it on the cover. The cover of this one should say "If you only need a few photos from each manufacturer and you don't need makers' marks to help you IDENTIFY your silver, then this book is for you!!!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hagan Silverplate book is complete and easy to use
I found many of the patterns I collect covered in Hagan's book. The drawings are large and easy to use to identify your pieces. I also bought Hagan's Sterling Flatware which is set up in a similar manner. You can also use both books to note which patterns you want to search for. The dates given in the books allowed me to note which patterns were contemporary with the china I collect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
I have owned this book for at least 3 years, it is the most used book I own.If you are interested in identifying many pieces of silver plate, this is the book for you.Very easy to use.I was just on Amazon to see if there was an updated version yet, or I am trying to decide if I should buy a new one.Mine looks ragged, I have used it so much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but so much more is needed!
I collect silverplate - mostly flatware, and have been studying it for several years. I'm not the authority - that's why I want to learn more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanksgiving and Turkey Collectibles
A very practical book illustrating a hugh plethora of thanksgiving related collectibles in all shapes and sizes of which I was not aware. The author must have a hugh collection which was beautifully photographed over 13 full chapters with very detailed captions and price values. It seems to be the definitive guide in this holiday collectibe arena.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turkey for Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving and Turkey Collectibles is the most comprehensive book on turkey memorabilia that I have ever seen. This book is a handy reference guide for those who collect and value turkey memorabilia. The author no doubt has one of the largest collections of its kind.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Just Gets Better and Better
There are those who impulsively and passionately buy books on antique and collectible glassware, those who systematically purchase such books for their usefulness, and those who wait for that rare wonderful book to add to their collection.Milbra and Emily, Mother and Daughter, have written a book for ALL of you.Grab your purse, your wallet, your checkbook, your credit card. We're going shopping!5-0 out of 5 stars Another Invaluable Resource for Glass Collectors!
This beautiful new book is a worthy companion to the other 4 books in the Crystal for America series by Milbra Long and Emily Seate! It is artfully designed and cleverly organized, so you can quickly find updated values for any Fostoria glassware covered in the four preceding books. Colorful page borders and plenty of illustrations, many in color, make this book easy to use, despite all the numerical information it offers. There is even a section of new information on Fostoria tumblers! This book does not replace the other 4 books -- you need them for indepth information on pieces and patterns, but it is a masterful presentation of updated value information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect handy reference
This is the book I've been waiting for.It puts all the patterns into one book I can carry with me.Since it's in ABC order, patterns are easy to find, and there's picture of a piece or design to jog my memory with each pattern.Lot's of good data packed into one book, plus all the color makes it fun.A must have for Fostoria collectors! ...
