3-0 out of 5 stars A little too kiddie
First off, the copy I received has a completely different cover than is depicted on Amazon.com. Still, I think the internal cards are the same. (Book publishers often seem to publish different covers of the same material, probably to freshen up the material and/or trick you into buying the same book twice...)

3-0 out of 5 stars A Conservator's Review
As a guide book written specifically for lay persons, An Ounce of Preservation has an educational mandate. As such, it is compelled to offer well-researched and accurate information in all details. At the same time, it attempts to simplify a highly complex field to fit the format of a shortbooklet that can be understood by a reader who has never concerned himselfwith document preservation before. The main dilemma of this book becomesapparent at the point where these two goals meet: simplification versusaccuracy - can both coexist? Some critical observations must be made thatdemonstrate how the author has compromised the accuracy of his text byfalling into some of the traps of over-simplification.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the beginning family historian!
With no background in caring for old photos and papers, I was in a quandry over what to do with the box full of items left to me by my deceased uncle. I didn't have the money for a professional to refresh and repair thephotos, many of which suffered from long years of neglect. So I went onlinein search of a publication that would tell me where to start. An Ounce ofPreservation provided me, a true archival dummie, with the groundwork Ineeded to begin the restoration project. As I sent off for information fromcompanies listed in the appendix of the book, I learned more and more, untiI now feel like a blooming expert! I have a great scrapbook of my uncle'sphotos that I can pass on to my grandchildren, and it's a scrapbook thattakes care of the items instead of aiding in their destruction. Without allthe easy-to-follow techniques and many, many leads for more informationprovided in the book, I doubt if I would have ever had the courage totackle the job myself. And since I didn't have the money for professionalhelp, all those precious items of family history would still bedeteriorating away in my closet. I contacted the publisher (to find out howto contact the author) only to learn that a greatly expanded second editionof this book is in the works. I highly recommend this book to anyone whowants to learn the basics -- it was all news to me!

2-0 out of 5 stars An Ounce of Information
"An Ounce of Preservation" is more aptly described as a pamphlet which delivers only the most BASIC information that most people nowadays regard as common knowledge. The reader looking for practical help, such aswhat solution to use to clean a smudged photo from the twenties, will findvery little to go by (no more than a three-sentence paragraph for thecleaning of old photos). This thin book might have been more successful ifthe author had limited his scope and treated his subject in more detail. As it is, it's a lot to pay for text that can be read in less than an hour. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous representation of fruit labels from the late 1800s to the early 1960s
John A. Baule's The Ultimate Fruit Label Book is a gorgeous representation of fruit labels from the late 1800s to the early 1960s: the heyday of millions of bright, colorful paper labels used by fruit growers to catch the eye and advertise their produce. This isn't just a value guide, though: over 1,700 color images are listed alphabetically and including stock and private labels from grows and associations alike, along with histories of major fruit companies and collecting hints. The result is a gorgeous presentation and a 'must' for any with more than a casual interest in fruit labels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History Your Imagination Will Appreciate
This is a most interesting book, at least for people such as myself who have an interest in late 19th and early 20th century photography.Actually, I suspect it would also intrigue people who lack that enthusiasm but who have an interest in general social history of this period. A premise of the book is that photographs in albums are often times given added historical or literary meaning and visual interest by being placed into a personalized context by an arranger, compiler, and/or photographer. This context provides the photographs with an enhanced ability to create an historical account of a life, a portion of a life, an event, etc. - without being subservient to a text. Most of the albums presented do not have any substantial written commentary (and many have no written text other than labels for individual photographs), and rely on the images alone to provide the larger insights. The book is extensively and richly illustrated with examples drawn from the large and thoughtfully acquired collection of Barbara Levine. These examples illuminate and extend the clear and insightful commentary in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars the beginnings of the American photo album as a type of social history
The cover is velvet, like one of those fancy Victorian-era photo albums. "Snapshot Chronicles" accompanies an exhibition at Reed College of innumerable photographs collected by Barbara Levine. The photographs are kept together as they were in albums of their original owners; or in the case of those not going with an album, in groups of similarly pictured individuals or similar subject matter. The source of the photographs was the Kodak Brownie camera introduced as a consumer item in 1900. This quickly led to an explosion of photographs of friends, relatives, yards and neighborhoods, vacation scenes, and varied activities (much as the cell phone has spurred new kinds of communication these days, one assumes). The photos were kept in "vernacular" photo albums; whose charm to later generations is explained by Willard Morgan, the Director of the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Photography in 1944, "The snapshot has become, in truth, a folk art, spontaneous, almost effortless, yet deeply expressive. It is an honest art...partly because it is simply more trouble to make an untrue picture than a true picture." The hundreds of simple, yet fetching snapshots were taken before the days when artists, photojournalists, advertisers, and propagandists started to make use of cameras for their own specialized ends. Thus, the guileless, popular, vernacular snapshots can be seen as an unwitting visual social history of the era too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk Stocks
This book contains many stocks and bonds that no one would collect. I sold many of these to the author for $1.00. There are many good references out there. Try George LaBarre's Books. They're out of Print but can be found on here and Ebay. The Author should stick with his other subject matter we writes about and Shame on Krause Publishers. They should have used a established dealer or the IBSS.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a good start
This is the most complete catalog of scripophily items I have found. (It is the only one I have been able to locate.) The book is organized well, and is fairly complete. I find at least two thirds of the issues I have been looking for in it. As for the listed pricing, the prices seem to be fair compared with what I have encounterd in the market. There are plenty of photographs, though most are blabk and white.1-0 out of 5 stars Standard Catalog of Stocks & Bonds
This is a nice try but the prices are way off the mark. They are for the most part way too low and not in touch with reality. The book provides a good basic overview of the Scripophily hobby, but the reader should totally disregard the prices.A search of Scripophily websites on the Internet will give someone a much more realistic view of pricing and availability. I have heard a lot of complaints about this book from dealers and collectors alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This is a "must-have" book for the serious collector of stereo views and those just now getting interested in this fascinating subject. Waldsmith really knows his stuff. Highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Book on Stereo Views - and Viewmaster reels
This is an excellent history of the 19th and early 20th century phenomeon "stereo views" in which two copies of a photograph were produced on a letter-sized card and viewed through a hand-held viewer to see the picture in 3-D effect. You still see these old photo cards occasionally at flea markets and antique shops and they have been avidly collected for generations although this form of entertainment died out around the 1920's.Mr. Waldsmith gives us detailed listings of many of the stereo view cards, price value, and information on many photographers.A wonderful bonus for the babyboom generation is the inclusion of the history of Viewmasters, the "updated" version of SVs a fond memory for children for over 50 years and still being issued today.Waldsmith includes a complete list of Viewmaster photo reels and packets issued up through the book's publication as well as the less popular rivals of Viewmaster in the past.Highly recommended even if you don't collect either stereo views or viewmaster reels and invaluable if you do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stereo Views: An Illustrated History and Price Guide
The revised edition is excellent, apart from forming a useful catalogue of stereographs to seek out, it is also a wonderful history of the many subjects photographed in 3-D over the years. I rated it at 4 stars rather than 5 because I consider the reduced content of the index to be a retrograde step. Having said that it is a 'must have' for all stereographers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide is the BEST guide to papermaking!
There's an old adage that says, "Never judge a book by its cover."5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and true to the title
I love this book.Arnold Grummer is fantastic. This book explains everything you need to know about paper, and making paper, in a very simple way.I especially love the beginning of the book where he gets into the technical aspects of what IS paper and why we can make our own. There are also many full-color samples of handmade paper that I found very inspiring. This book will keep you busy trying all the embellishment and inclusion techniques, too, including botanicals, pin drawing, and coloring.I'll be using this book for a long time, and I recommenend it to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A most inspiring book for new and experienced papermakers!
The day I recieved this book I could not put it down, I had to read the entire book! From the start, it is an encouraging and creative book to be used in every aspect of the papermaking process. Unfortunately the onlyparts I felt were weak would be for paper artists who want a totally acidfree paper. His comments on that though, do need to be believed because Heis the curator of the Dard Hunter paper museum and a paper chemist. Hefeels that the best way to make that type of paper is to start withrecycled paper that is already acid free. Those artists who create fromplants alone may not find enough information to please them, yet many of Histechniques can still be applied with their experience to create veryartistic paper. Even beginners can tackle the most professional resultswith this book in hand. I feel even children could achieve surprisingresults with the processes he shows, step by step, using mostly homesupplies. He shows you how to make your own mold and deckle too! The"moon paper" recipe he shows you how to create is worth the priceof the book alone! Out of my entire library of paper books, this does standon its own for the most part and for that reason, I recommend it for allbeginner and intermediate artists and every papermaking teacher.Yourcreative juices will flow with this book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD!
I guess being more a fan than a collector of postcards I have a different opinion than some of the reviewers who rated this book so low.Regarding prices, the fact is that on any collectible prices vary widely depending on your location and method of selling. As a long-time collector of toys and comic books, I can attest to that. Thus the criticism about pricing is completely invalid as this is merely a "guide" as any pricing guide is.I also would dispute the claim that many of the cards are in poor condition. Some are but the vast majority are not.We are talking about items that are in the neighborhood of one hundred years old so they are not all going to be in mint condition.I think the editors did a fantastic job of giving readers a very broad cross-section of types and styles of cards, regardless of condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pages come packed with color photos of seasonal cards organized by holiday along with current prices
Robert and Claudette Reed's Postcards For The Holidays, 2nd Edition arrived too late for more timely Christmas mention, but since holiday collecting is really a year-round occupation, it's not too late to mention the ongoing reference value of Postcards For The Holidays Identification & Value Guide, which appears in its 2nd updated edition. Pages come packed with color photos of seasonal cards organized by holiday along with current prices. The chapters each introduce with a history of manufacturers and approaches to further the educational teachings.
1-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition is a Big Disapointment
I am really disapointed in the second edition because it is basically a repeat of the first edition.Although there are more pages in the second edition, this books shows the same postcards as the first edition. Also, the text is the same. It's like buying the same book only there are a few new postcards added. The authorsdid remove pictures of beat up postcards and replaced them with new cards they must have added to their collection, but they never changed the prices of what the cards are worth.Granted, the first book was published in 2002, and the second editionhas a copyright of 2006, but every postcard collector wants to see their collection has increased in value-especially the Halloween cards. The values were not even increased by a dollar! The Easter section and Santa Claus sections are lengthier and the cover is attractive, but this is not my idea of what a second edition should be.The publishers and editors should have been more critical. There is not one Winsch or Schmucker card shown in any of the holidays and any collector knows, these are the cream of the crop, especially with Halloween cards. As much as I like the format and appreciate the book being in color, I was really upset not to see more new postcards and a change in postcard values. This shows lack of research and I feel like the book was hastily thrown together.Don't buy it if you own the first edition and hesitate about the second edition.I didn't think it was worth the price being charged. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
Perfect book for the beginner in the world of early photography. Details each type of early photo, describes the process used to make it, and explains how to identify it. The author also shares tips on buying: what to look for, what's exceptional, and what to avoid. Gives prices and lots of great picture examples, and details restoration efforts that beginners can and should do, as well as what NOT to do. Loved it and would highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information source
This book was great. I collect cabinet cards. They are not as collectible as other forms of photographs, and that makes it very hard to find good information. This book was very helpful. It gave me information to date them, and which one are rare, uncommon, and unusual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the definitive source, but close.
I was blessed with a box full of old photographs, including some that I called "daguerreotypes", really not knowing what they were. I still have the photos in storage, but after reading this book, and having it on hand to refer to, I feel confident that I will be able to properly identify the photos. Most of these are from the mid 19th to early 20th century and this book covers this period exactly. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide!
At long last collectors of hand colored photos have a guide. This book is well organized, with photographers being listed alphabetically, making a particular artist easy to locate. The background and regionality of each artist is discussed, with representative works and titles of each listed as well. There are full chapters each for the discussion of unknown photographers, regionality, and the conservation and preservation of hand painted photos. Particularly helpful is the 15 step guide to cleaning and restoration. This 1/2 inch thick book is crammed full of useful information, and would have earned 5 stars except for a couple of problems. The first is the exclusion of two Western photographers. Burton Frasher, of Pomona, California, and the McCulloch Brothers of Phoenix, Arizona. Frashers Photo is an important part of CA history, and his exclusion here is a serious one. His b&w postcards are well known, and while his painted photos are less numerous, they are beautifully done and deserve mention. The McCulloch Brothers likewise did outstanding artistic work with photos of the Arizona desert, rivaling even the best work of the Bear Studios. There are also some quality control issues. Some of the photo examples did not print correctly, appear out of focus and have little colored lines around them. The paper used seems poor quality, and I felt I needed to take care in turning pages to avoid undue wrinkling. Despite these problems, I still highly recommend this book.Very useful for collectors! ... Read more
