1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing Book
This is the most disappointing book I have read in a long time. There is very little about the actual guns of the gunfighters and the few facts presented are very general and broad brush. The author obviously is a fan of old Hollywood westerns as half of his "gunfighters" are in fact only Hollywood actors! He also includes several modern gun magazine writers.Worse yet, many of the noteable real western gunfighters are ignored. The editing is also poor.Several photos of the same gun appear in more than one place in the book.Spend your money elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of hidden gun lore
The Guns Of The Gunfighters: Lawmen, Outlaws & Hollywood Cowboys by firearms historian and expert Doc O'Meara, is a meticulous and detailed survey of the weaponry carried by some of the most famous (and infamous) gunmen of the Wild West and the silver screen, including Wyatt Earp, Annie Oakley, Roy Rogers, and many, many more. Black-and-white photographs, extensive attention to detail, and a wealth of hidden gun lore make The Guns Of The Gunfighters a superb giftbook for gun buffs, Western American history enthusiasts, and those having a special interest in Hollywood portrayals of the Old West.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cotton Candy for the soul!
This volume by noted gun writer Doc O'Meara is a fun and informative work for fans of the Westeren, Gun Buffs and anybody who enjoyed Saturday shoot em ups. The writing is bright and jaunty, like the subject matter. Well documented, and a treasure trove of beautiful photographs of the Gunfighters and their tools of the trade. A good reference volume sure to attract attention, the books suceeds on all levels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hershenson Scores A Rootin'-Tootin Hit!!
This excellent collection of poster images from close to 100 years of Western movies was originally sent to me as part of a "grab bag" collection of poster books from Mr.Hershenson. (For the uninitiated; Bruce Hershenson bills himself as "The Largest Movie Poster Dealer in the World". Considering the incredible energy he devotes to the hobby, the quality of his service and his merchandise, it's a tough claim to dispute.)I was never a huge fan of posters from this genre, but this book made me a believer. The images, especially from the pre-1940 movies which comprise much of the book, (movies right up to the publication date are covered), are absolutely mind-boggling in their lush coloring and craftmanship. The printing quality is easily as good as humongous art books that cost 4 times as much as this reasonably priced tome. I now buy all of Bruce's books, regardless of their subject matter, as there are always images that interest me, and I was especially excited about the second volume of COWBOY POSTERS, which is also highly recommended by this reviewer. The problem with Bruce's books is that as I keep falling in love with all these new posters, I keep spending more money on acquiring the originals for my collection. Fortunately, Bruce has these weekly auctions on eBay where I can get them atreasonable prices....hey, wait! Do you think there's a connection here? Hmmm... A great volume in a grand ongoing series that belongs in the collection any fan of movie poster art or cinema in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blast from the past
From the first page to the last you will feel like a kid again .The silent posters gave me a chance to see the stars who stared in early westerns. Then it goes into early talkies. What a sight young GARY COOPER in his first western. Then it goes into the era that i saw on tv .HOPPY,JOHN WAYNE,GENE AUTRY,and others. And covering JIMMY STEWART, GREGORY PECK. To CLINT EASTWOOD and KEVIN COSNER.Each photo 100% quality.Made me go through the basement at my parents houseto see if i could find my GUNSMOKE holster and gun, or my RIFLEMAN rifle i had as a kid. At least i found RIO GRAND on DVD .Dont miss this book

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like Westerns, you'll love this book!
Much as we loved watching those black-and-white movies, the colorful posters that drew us to the boxoffice were even more appealing. You'll treasure this collection of superb reproductions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oz-some book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now THIS has EVERYTHING to do with 'Oz'!
When I first saw this book years ago on "the Inernational Wizard of Oz Club", I wasn't really keen to get it (I guess the front cover looked a little too dull for me), but after seeing it in a bookstore and actually looking through it, I then knew I had to get this book, because (unlike the small "All Things Oz" collection), this book includes things OTHER than Baum's Book and MGM's Wizard, such as an unknown song from the 1904 Musical (not mentioned in "Oz: Before the Rainbow"), the Silent Films, 'Journey Back to Oz', 'The Wiz', both the Rankin Bass & Disney versions of 'Return to Oz', the 4 1987 CANADIAN-Animated Cinar Films (YES!! The mystery of their animation origin is written here!!), "the Wizard of Oz - Animated Series", "Oz Kids", the Asian "Space Adventures of Oz" TV series, "On Ice" Productions . . . it not only has all of this but also INCLUDES the most important and best of all, "The Dreamer of Oz"!! other language editions of the Oz books, and we also get a few 'Baum's Non-Oz' stuff, like his "Last Egyptian" Film and "Queen Zixi of Ix" book (plus a "Denslow's Picture Books for Children",) games/items/figurines, a few design sketches for MGM's Oz props/Emerald Cityand lots of other things that have to do with 'Oz' too - even though we don't get like 1-full page on info on every particular item, we still get some good information and lots of pictures too.Just like "All Things Oz", this book has lots of written information, pictures in the background/inserts and quotes from "the Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (and I'm glad to say that it doesn't have so many mistakes as "All Things Oz" does). But we also get a glimpse at some not-so pleasant Oz stuff, like the "Oz Comics for Adults" and a horrific Winged Monkey Creature Features model.
5-0 out of 5 stars 5 STARS, AS BRIGHT AS THAT YELLOW BRICK ROAD!
Lions and tigers an bears? Oh my! Add Munchkins and Winged Monkeys and a Horse of a Different Color to the list. This is Oz Country, andthings simply don't get better than this. To celebrate the centennial of the publication of L. Frank Baum's novel (and the 60th anniversary of the classic MGM flick), preeminent Oz historian John Fricke has written a glorious homage of all things fun and fantastical. Not only does the book offer a fascinating chronicle of the Ozian phenomenon, but the illustrations, culled from Willard Carroll's priceless collection of more than 10,000 museum-quality pieces, are breathtaking. Oh Auntie Em, there's no place like home . . . provided you're snuggled up in front a fire with this gem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the young mind.
In one very special way, I had a wonderful childhood. My parents shopped at a small grocery store that had an extensive rack of comics. The owners were very nice people who allowed me to read the comics while my parents bought groceries. Since my father also bought his mother's groceries, I had plenty of time to read (devour) them all. Therefore, I was able to read the original issues of most of the superheroes that erupted from the fertile mind of Stan Lee at Marvel Comics. When I opened this book, I recognized the cover of the first issue of the X-Men series.
5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to the Original Team.
This easy to read book aimed at young readers serves as a perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the original X-Men team:Cyclops, Marvel Girl, the Beast, Iceman, and Angel all studying under the tutelage of Charles Xavier, aka Professor X.The book also talks about Magneto and the first adventure that the X-Men took part in. The classic team has taken many changes over the years, but few teams will rival the original. Great introduction to the original X-Men team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducers a new generation to the original X-Men
Publication of "The Story of the X-Men: How It All Began" was clearly inspired by the 2000 film that brought Marvel's merry mutants to the big screen for the first time. What I like about this book by Michael Teitelbaum is that it indeed focuses on the original X-Men instead of trying to deal with all the roster changes. However, while focusing on Professor X and the first-generation of X-Men--Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman and Angel--it does bring the characters up to date.Of course, a section is devoted to Magneto as well and the book does touch on the Generation X roster of the team, but the point is clearly to learn about the original group.Teitelbaum also does a good job of setting up the compelling premise of the comic book, that mutants are feared and distrusted by "normal" human beings. It was this strong underlying current of prejudice that always gave the X-Men its depth as a comic book.My only complaint is that while there are examples of artwork from throughout the entire run of the X-Men, no credit is given to the particular artists (although you should be able to recognize the distinctive styles of Kirby, Lee, etc.). Those of us who started reading X-Men when it first came out will recognize this is an excellent introduction to the good old days for newcomers to the world of the Un-Canny X-Men.A glossary in the back defines over two-dozens words reflecting the rich vocabulary and challening sentence structure of this Level 4 (Proficient Readers) DK volume. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars KISS ROCKS!
I LOVED THE BOOK. I DON"T KNOW HOW YOU COULDN"T IF YOU WERE A TRUE KISS FAN.KISS ARMY>>>>>

1-0 out of 5 stars A rip-off in pure KISS fashion
Folks, 99% of this book is pictures of Kiss merchandise.Unless you want to pay good money to look at hundreds of pages filled with pictures of toys and magazine covers, save your dough.KISSTORY I is excellent, KISSTORY II is an absolute rip-off. Gene always seems to come up with new ways to suck the money out of your pocket, and this one is a classic.I've been a KISS fan since 1976 and will remain one until I die (no, I'll not be buried in a KISS Kasket) so trust me.This book is for two kinds of people - those who have tons of money to burn and nothing to burn it on, and those who feel they must have EVERYTHING that has the KISS logo stamped on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kisstory 2 Toys Games and Girls Bible
I think Kisstory 2 is fantastic! Just about anything and everything that is a Kiss collectable item is featured from 1973 to the present. A great followup to Kisstory 1. I admit the price is kind of steep but if your area true Kiss fan the book is worth it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Yee-aah!
Excellent book for the western enthusiast. was a little disappointed that posters were not full page but guess I'm being a bit picky. No text apart from the introduction, many memories came flooding back of favourites such as Charles Starrett, Allan Lane, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Colorful West
More Cowboy Movie Posters is a fabulous art book and truly invaluable, offering the highest quality images from good and bad westerns. As someone who collects western posters, I have used this book as an important aid to purchasing posters illustrated within. Without such a quality reference I would have needed to peruse a stack of catalogs to find the same amount of images. For the non collector movie buff, the book is equally a delight and tremendous value at the low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, Extraordinary Detail On Every Level!
This review can easily apply to any of the books in the Bruce Hershenson edited series of film posterhistory. Hershenson rightly treats film graphics not just as pop culture artifacts but trueworks of art.His books are filled with a curator'seye for superior choice and reproduction, each poster in striking color and with a clarity of printing that rivals most any coffeetable art book. Somewhere betweenadvertising andillustration, film posters, like book jackets and record covers, inhabitthat imaginativeand atmospheric zone where one artreflects another. It's not just the history of film or the history of film design, it's a history of twentieth century Saturdayafternoons and Saturday nights. How oftenwe would gointo the dark theatre armed only with the ideas and ideals of the postersoutside, andthen return to them afterward, perhapswith nodding affirmation or smirking disillusionment, but still a vision of what could be. This series of books should besubtitiled: THE FINE ART OFANTICIPATION,for no matterif expectation was filled or emptied by the films behind them, their posters kept on shining. ... Read more

Awesome and amazing! Need I say more! This book is fabulous as was Volume One! The pictures are incredible and the information is extremely helpful. This author did a fantastic job creating this price guide for all the Shirley fans in the world who just can't get enough! It has been quite a while since an author has done a new Shirley price guide and it was much needed. But this Author's version was much different than the other price guides as it shows everything and anything that is out there...old and new! Shows us Shirley fans that there is still a high demand for our loved Shirley and her memorbilia. Highly recommend! A++++++

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, although, his first is far better.
I have read and enjoyed Tom Shannon's first KISS price guide since it was released in 2000 & have found it to be a VERY informative and helpful resource for pricing my collection. The prices are quite accurate and it is very thorough, covering nearly every item in the vast KISS memorabilia empire. It is a very well done book and the printing is top notch. I have been very eagerly awaiting Shannon's new book since I heard he would be starting another about two or three years ago. I purchased his new book "Warman's KISS Collectibles Field Guide" and in my opinion, it leaves much to be desired. Although this is of the highest quality printing, its thick & small 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" size makes it difficult to go navigate easily. Also the amount of info on the pages is very limited due to its small size. The tons of quality color photos he includes with his books are a big plus. It does feature the prices on the listed page rather than having to flip to the back of the book, which was the case with the 2000 book which is a bonus. Many of the old items that were in the first book are in this book. I was expecting much more of the newer items to be included in the book. Much to my disappointment, where some items may have been left out of a category in the 2000 edition, many complete categories are left out completely in the 2005 edition. This is a far better printed book than Ingo Floren's (released last year), although not as complete. If you want a GREAT price guide pick up Tom Shannon's first book. This one may fill in some gaps for newer items, but it is not a complete listing by any means. It does have an interview with Bill Aucoin that is very interesting. This would make a good traveling companion (hence the name Field Guide?) due to its small size.

I purchased this as a gift for a friend, and I was excited to see how beautiful it was. I am a Beatles fan as well and I was very tempted to keep it for myself. :)
2-0 out of 5 stars Overdone photo "memoir" book
Freeman really doesn;t have a lot to say about either the Beatles or the photos he took of them...no professional insights on photography and no intriguing thoughts on the Beatles in the context of the British pop culture scene in the 1960's. Photos are nothing new beyond the album covers, nothing we haven't scene in Hoffman's, Gunther's, Benson's and even Beatle Biographies from Davies, Schaffner and Norman, etc.5-0 out of 5 stars AND MAY I INTRODUCE TO YOU...MEET THE BEATLES!

As a newcomer to the vintage guitar craze, I found this to be the most helpful book I've found so far. Fun and interesting reading. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book! Great images! But here's why I'm disappointed.
This is a TERRIFIC book, at a terrific price, filled with - you guessed it - terrific, clean, sharp, colorful images of some of the best science fiction and fantasy movie posters ever created. In that respect, it meets and exceeds a five-star rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I purchased this book expecting to get a complete listing of values for autographs of celebrities and athletes. What I got was nothing more than a reproduction of the listings that Beckett includes in its monthly publications. With the exception of about 200 prices for celebrityautographs (which is a far cry from the thousands you would find in otherpublications), this book has nothing that you can't get in a monthly issueof Beckett. It may have a few nice pictures, but that does not make up forits lack of content. And the prices are obscene! Is a Dean Cain sig worthmore than Willie Mays?Or for that matter is Dean Cain worth more thanJack Nicholson? Where do they get their information? They spend way toomuch time listing prices for autograph inserts manufactured by cardcompanies, and not enough time listing prices for REAL autographs obtainedby collecters. Can I get my twenty-five bucks back?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a review, but info from a reader
I am not being critical when I say, in retrospect I would not have purchased this book. The general info listed above doesn't really tell what you what you're buying, so I'll try to give you a bit more info here. Don't expect to learn a price estimate for your John Wayne photo here. There are about 500 Hollywood celebrity names and price estimates, but theyare all living performers. The baseball section is better. There's anactive player section as well as a lengthy retired section, includingdeceased players -- with price estimates.NO signature samples of thecelebrities are included.About 150 baseball players (past and present)signature samples are included. There are football, basketball hockeyboxing and other sports sections which are similar to the baseball section. There's also a lot about trading cards, but I'm no expert on how good thatis.I'm not saying how good or bad this book is. I just want to help youknow what you're buying. ... Read more
