4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This wonderful little book (of about 44 pages) is designed for younger readers in the Level 4 - "Proficient" category. This is not a comic book, though it does contain a number of wonderful pictures. Instead, this book is about making comic books. It talks about the artists behind the comics, and how they go about designing and creating comics, the X-Men in particular.3-0 out of 5 stars atlast, info on x-men behind the scenes
It always eluded me as to how the X-men were on and off a sizzling bestselling comic book for the past twenty years. So what fuels this book is actually curiousity.'Cause it was always a wonder to me what was it that made x-men so diferent than other comics.Well,i still don't see what makes this a phenomenal chart-scorcher,but it will be a bit useful for aspiring artists and writers trying to break into the comic field. ... As a bell collector I found this book to be very informative and helpful in identification of bells.I'm pleased that it also had a price guide included, although I don't agree with some of her prices as I've seen many items sell for higher amounts than she indicates.Since prices are always subject to change regarding collectibles,to me the important aspect of this book is the identification of bells, and that was wonderful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Addition to collection
Want to add an excellent reference to your collection of books dealing with the Hollywood Musicals? Then this book is it. Just like those musicals from the golden age of Hollywood, this book has it all.Beautiful photographed images, lots of (techni) colours, stars in their greatest moments.Truly an Oscar winning performance! The book is printed in good quality paper and images are very clear and of good size on each page.Of course it's impossible to include a poster from every musicals in any given year, but the selections Bruce Hershenson made are excellent. A page may contain an average of 5 images while some are giving the full page treatment (e.g. Grease, Singin' In the Rain).Definitely an excellent addition to your library of movie books.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Will the Musical Make a Comeback?
With the notable exceptions of Oliver! (1968), Cabaret (1972), Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), Tommy (1975) and Evita (1996), Hollywood has essentially turned its back on a genre that this book re-captures in allits glory. The images are superb, the color and quality are sublime. Though the book is straightforward, a thread of sadness runs subconsciouslyfrom its first to its last pages, as one ruminates about what this genrewas all about, what it could have been and why it is, for all intents andpurposes, dead except on the New York, London and Toronto stages.FromAstaire and Rogers to Gene Kelly, Streisand and even the Beatles, it's allcovered here.Though it seems awkward to most of today's audiences to seea person in the middle of a scene break out into a song with no bandplaying behind him on screen, this was the accepted norm and was often thethe portion of a film that had an audience soaring in their seats.Thatsuch a feeling has all but disappeared makes this book all the moreprecious, preventing this genre from fading into the wisps of memory.Thebeautiful thing about this book is the unexpected.Rather than delve intothe expected great musicals with the standard American images (which areincluded in great detail nevertheless), this book includes artwork fromother countries, art that is more "in your face" and thoughtprovoking.Who can forget the image used for the Polish version of the1972 release of "Cabaret?"(Joel Grey's face in the center offour stocking legs bent into the shape of a swastika?)This is the kind ofthing that you would never have seen printed or distributed in the U.S.,works of art that can only be bought for thousands of dollars today at manyof America's biggest auction houses. If you are the least bit interestedin the jaw-dropping beauty of what has become a lost art -- the exercise ofdrawing images associated with the advertising of a Hollywood film -- thisis the book to have. This book is part of movie poster maven BruceHershenson's exhaustive multi-volume series of books highlighting thehistory and beauty of what much of mainstream America has only in the lastten years begun to recognize. And that is movie posters are a "popularart" form that can stand proudly next to all other styles of art fromgothic to modern, from expressionist to impressionist. Great film artborrows from all of these styles and this volume, which focuses only onposters associated with musicals, illustrates innumerable examples wherebydespite the restrictive nature of the genre (musicals), not all posterswent in the same direction in terms of style and presentation. From ShallWe Dance to A Star is Born, from 42nd Street to Yellow Submarine,Hershenson and Allen have built an incredible archive (and legacy) ofimages in all of their books, capturing a period (when all posters weredrawn by hand and then printed, as opposed to today's method of usingphotographic stock and manipulating them digitally and printing them by thethousands) that would otherwise be lost forever. A fine book for anycollector (get the hardcover edition if you can, it's harder to find; ifAmazon doesn't have it, it's available from Mr. Hershenson directly atmail@brucehershenson.com).

5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly written, sumptuous presentation
...This is a groundbreaking book, the first (and only one since!) that truly unearths the story of how movie posters were created, who drew them, why each studio had a certain 'look' to their posters and what impact they had on the popular culture. The text is wise, witty, thoroughly enjoyable while it imparts vast amounts of fresh and fascinating information. And as for the images, they are magnificently chosen and reproduced, each one of them accompanied by intriguing and smart observations on the films themselves, their making and their role in Hollywood history. This is an ambitious undertaking, yet it's an ideal book to get lost in during a lazy weekend.Hard to put down, beautifully done and crying out for a sequel.A classic!

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
Reel Art is like looking at a carpet sampling booklet. The paperback edition that is. Apart from a few none specific notes given a the front of the booklet the information on offer is very limited. Page after page of vintage posters with no text to accompany them makes this flick book an annoying "read". If all you require is visual this is an excellent choice. However, if you thought this book would actually tell you anything about the posters published, think again.5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular book well worth having
This is a must have book, even if you aren't "into movies". It is a sheer visual delight and a worthy addition to any library. Those with an interest in the graphic arts should definately acquire it. Arranged in athoughtful manner, the glorious artwork is accompanied by intelligent textthat is never dry and always informative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to remember a wonderful film
Luis de Berniere's novel was very good and its film was even better. I was so impressed by the film that I wanted to remember it long after I have seen it. Steve Clark's book is full of wonderful pictures as well as detailed information about the cast, the story, the scenery, the music, the historical background and the making of the film. Nicolas Cage and P.Cruz fans can find their various pictures in the book. For those who have liked the film, this is a very good book to own. Although we can find most books in our stores, it would probably be impossible to find this specific book, so thanks to Amazon.com for letting me have it.

2-0 out of 5 stars a book to remember a wonderful film
I had watched 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' twice and liked it very much because of the romance, the beautiful scenery, the music, the historical facts and the wonderful acting of Nicolas Cage. I am very happy to have this book because I want to remember this film long after I have seen it. The pictures in the book are very nice and it was also enjoyable to read about all the details about the making of this film. N.Cage and P.Cruz fans can find their numerous pictures in this book. We can find most books in the bookstores in my country but this specific book is very probably will not be one of them so I'd like to thank Amazon.com for giving me the chance to have it. 5-0 out of 5 stars a viewfrom a cefallonian
