5-0 out of 5 stars a whole new way to love movies
I have been so impressed with Hershenson's series of books on classic movie posters that I have purchased them all. I hope he keeps it up. These are beautifully produced allowing me to really understand how a movie was promoted when first released. The best posters have always been works ofart but as they have become collectibles it has become expensive for mostof us to own older posters. These books certainly make it possible toappreciate the beauty of the design and graphics. My guests are really impressed too. I leave a few ofthe books out and they always are the center of conversation as people bothfind their favorite films and discover somethings they never knew existed.I hope these books keep coming for a long time. Thanks for selling them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual delight by the king of poster collectors.
For anyone who loves movies, this is a wonderful eyeful of beautifully reproduced posters. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Much ado about nothing!
What a letdown! While this book purports to cover the period 1950-1975, I was sadly disappointed to find that it completely omits one of the most important musical influences of that period, DON COSTA, who was a noted arranger-conductor, master of the 12-string guitar, a performer in his own right, and a man who influenced the careers of many well-known performers like Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Johnny Mathis, Ferrante & Teicher, Paul Anka, and the list goes on. Don Costa's fabulous arrangements have appeared on labels such as ABC-Paramount, Columbia, Mercury, United-Artists, and his own label, DCP-International. Don Costa was a true musical genius and as such, he was hired to be the musical director of a major Boston, MA radio station when he was only 15 years old!... One can only wonder what other important performers or facts were left-out of this book, and such omissions only serve to cast doubt on the seriousness of the data that did manage to find a place between the covers of this publication!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that, perhaps, bites off too much
This is one of the best price guide books for American records. Due to its detailed information and clearly organized listings, it surpasses all previous publications in its scope and usefulness. It adds artists notpreviously mentioned in past price guides but does omit artists on asomewhat arbitrary basis. Why Getz and not Gillespie etc.? For the artistsit does include, much hard work is reflected in the thorough discographieswhich list reissue information and pressing chronology with great accuracy. Obscure artists with limited product are, as is common with books of thistype, omitted. For the money, this is the best book. Only Osborne's RockinRecords covers more ground, but in less essential detail. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lot's of detail, but prices are too high
A very nice book with lots of basic information about lost of different Star Wars collectibles (you name it, and it's probably in there). There are lots of full-color sample pictures, but you will not see pictures of EVERY item in a given category (i.e., all action figures). My favorite part of this book is that it actually provides a brief description of every single trading card and sticker (and there are about 1000 vintage cards and stickers... and a lot more new ones, which it also describes).Card prices are broken down by full box, empty box, unopened pack, just wrapper, complete set, and each individual card.Figure prices are included for just about every possible card variation, as well as for a mint/complete loose figure. The bad news is that the prices for the action figures and trading cards (that's mostly what I collect) are often far too high.I don't remember buying or selling for such high prices either before or after this book was written. Finally, I don't think you need both this book and the 2000 pocket size edition by the same author. If you want more detail, go for this larger edition. If you want something that travels well, go for the pocket edition. They are basically the same book, you just have to decide if you want detail or portability (keeping in mind that the prices quoted in both are probably far too high).

4-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU THINK THESE ARE THE PRICES YOUR GONNA GET AT AUCTION
THINK AGAIN! THIS BOOK IS VERY HELPFUL IN IDENTIFING WHAT YOU HAVE. BUT...IF YOU LOOK THRU THIS BOOK AND THINK YOUR GONNA MAKE A KILLING ONEBAY, THINK AGAIN!THATS WHAT I THOUGHT.ITEMS ARE ONLY WORTH WHAT PEOPLEARE WILLING TO PAY AND MOST OF THESE PRICES SEEM HIGH.ACTION FIGURES ANDRARE ITEMS ARE PROBABLY MORE "IN SYNC" WITH THE STATED MARKETVALUE THAN ALL OTHER ITEMS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I have recently goten back in to collecting Star Wars stuff, and found thebook very helpful in finding items that I never knew existed. With thepopularity of online auctions, some of the prices are not really reflectingthe "market value" of some of the items, but it does give you abaseline to work with.It explains things in an easy to understand way,and won't lose you if you aren't a hard core collector. There are a lot ofphotos to help out. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book on Movie Memorabilia
This is a sequel to Dian Zillner's 1991 book on the same subject, collecting movie star memorabilia, vintage magazines, posters, photos, dolls, etc. of movie stars. This book, like the first, is not really about collecting movie memorabilia in general but material on specific stars.Zillner opens this book with profiles and photos of memorabilia on arguably the six most collectible stars: Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley, Roy Rogers, Elizabeth Taylor, and Shirley Temple (Temple dominates the book as pages 69 to 102 are all on her).(Jean Harlow, James Dean, John Wayne, and the Beatles are mentioned in the foreward as highly collectible but they are NOT in this book or profiled.)Then the bulk of the book is on Zillner's apparent speciality, collecting child stars (child stars also dominated the first book with several of the same stars in both books albeit different merchandise). Each of the following has a chapter with photos of memorabilia: Freddie Barholomew, Joan Carroll, Jackie Coogan, Dionne Quints, Judy Garland, Baby Sandy Sandra Henville, Gloria Jean, Carolyn Lee, Roddy McDowell, Baby Peggy Montgomery, Margaret O'Brien, Donald O'Connor, Our Gang, Mickey Rooney, Viginia Weidler, Jane Withers. The memorabilia in this section leans heavily towards dolls, paper dolls, children's books, toys, and products that were marketed to children in the era as opposed to magazines, photos, sheet music, and posters like the grownup stars. Some of the merchandise is quite rare (I had no idea memorabilia on the short careers of Carolyn Lee and Joan Carroll existed). If you collect or have an interest in any of the stars or child actors listed you might want to check this book out. This is not a newly published book but Zillner avoids dollar values for the memorabilia which keeps the book from being dated, it's basically a illustrated book on vintage movie memorabilia. The Schiffer books are quite attractive pictorials of antiques and collectibles. ... Read more

An outstanding collection of posters from the earliest days of Hollywood film. The images are full color and very high-quality, nearly all are full page.A tremendous bargain, too - you'll never find be able to experience a collection like this outside of a museum.

4-0 out of 5 stars Star Wars Collictibles in a Nut Shell
A very nice pocket size book with lots of basic information about a lot of different Star Wars collectibles (you name it, and it's probably in there). There are even lots of pictures (at least for its size). However, the prices for the action figures and trading cards (that's mostly what I collect) are often far too high.I don't remember buying or selling for such high prices either before or after this book was written. Finally, I don't think you need both this book and the larger 1999 edition by the same author. If you want small, go for this pocket edition. If you want more detail, go for the other larger edition (it actually describes every single trading card... and there are about 1000 of them). But you can't carry the larger edition around in your pocket!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Star Wars fan on the go!
Stuart Wells is an expert on this stuff. He not only writes about it, but he collects it as well. This book even offers up a chapter on the 2001 Star Wars fast food toys that were given away at Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut. Designed for the fan who attends conventions and checks off stuff as he (she) buys it.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last a price guide that fits in your pocket!
For those of us that actually do spend all of or weekends searching for that "Holly Grail" for our collection, this type of price guide is a fabulous idea. While it obviously isn't complete, it's slim design is perfect for bringing to that collectibles show you are going to this weekend. Plus, Wells is such an authority that he really nails it as to what is important and what can be left out (he did a much larger Star Wars guide a couple of years back--but who wants to lug that book to a show?) Having written on everything from comic books to trading cards to toys, Wells sure knows what he is doing, and how to put one of these guides together. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but out of date
It is a great book but this is 2000 and it was released in 1998. Since then there has been a great number of additions to the Star Wars Collectibles universe and the problem with this book along with any other book / price guide is usually as soon as you get it the prices have changed and numerous items have been released. 5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate restorer's guide
This book is a must for anyone contemplating the purchase of an antique automaton singing bird box. The late author was THE world-renowned expert in restoring these miniature works of mechanical and artistic wizardry. Divided into sections based on the manufacturers or country of manufacture, each section is extremely informative and clearly written. The mechanisms are shown in various stages of disassembly and detailed information on proper functioning and repair are provided. Whether you own or plan to own one of these amazing boxes, the book allows you to appreciate the technical aspects of these marvels and makes you comprehend why they command such high prices. Fabulous pictures of boxes from private collections. With knowledgeable restorers being almost non-existent, this is an asset to the owner of a box or to would-be restorers. A+++++ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A graphic artists'MUST HAVE reference.
There have been many great graphic artists in the past several decades. In my opinion, The Stenberg Brothers produced some of the finest graphicalworks of art in this Century. The Stenberg Brothers lived andproduced their Art in 1920's...and 1930's. Fueling the Soviet propagandamachine.Look beyond the thorns of the Soviet era propaganda machine. If you are a true graphic artist, you will definately appreciate thefantastic talents of the Stenberg Brothers and Soviet-era art. TheStenbergs were Masters of the Graphic Arts. This book should not belisted as a "book". Rather, it should be listed as an artists'portfolio. This "portfolio" of Soviet artwork is a MUST foreveryone with an interest in appreciating the graphic arts. The StenbergBrothers were truly MASTERS of their medium. This BOOK is packed FULLof high quality, premium-paper-stock reproductions of the best works thesebrothers have ever produced. I recommend it wholley!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great look at early Soviet-era poster design
While mostly confined to the movie posters that the Stenberg Brothers produced in the early years of the Soviet Union, this book still includes enough general history to help the reader view them in the context in whichthey were produced.Well-illustrated (most illustrations are in fullcolor) with easy to comprehend text, this would be a valuable volume foranyone interested in graphic design. It will also appeal to students ofthe Constructivist movement. ...
