5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Get It
For anyone who loves to collect, this book is a must-have. Not that you'll need the tips that the author includes for the novice, but this gem of a book is a collectible in its own right, presented in a hard plastic sleeve. Filled with whimsical photos of dozens of designs by today's most noted designers and architects, "Antiques of the Future" is irresistible and informative. As a student of contemporary material culture and the things that surround us, I got a huge kick viewing some of the best design of our time in this format. Makes a great gift for the person who has almost everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
This book was a great addition to my library. I was surprised to see some of the objects that I own and love might be worth something someday, and to find out why. I have a few other "conversation piece" books on products, but most of them only talk about one type of design (like chairs) or are organized historically. I like that this book has a great variety of objects. The only bad thing is that now I want to own everything in the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's The List of Celebrity Autographs
I have known David Moore for many years and he is the only author of celebrity directories that uses and updates his address list on daily basis. For me, here is a list of celebrities who I have contacted and received autographs through the mail. They are: Sarah Jessica Parker, Bill Gates, Roy Clark, Gillian Anderson, Nicholas Cage, Bill Cosby, James Garner, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Gary Trudeau, Olivia Newton-John, Brandi Chastain, James Watson, Sandra Day O'Connor, Harmon Killebrew, George Bush, Betty Ford, Jimmy Carter, Leann Rhimes, Muhammad Ali, Angela Landsbury, Reba McEntire, Jay Leno, Faith Hill, Tommy John, Tom Hanks, Michael Eisner, Nolan Ryan, Tony Bennet, Colin Powell, Robert Duvall, John Mellencamp, Whoopi Goldberg and many others. If you want excellent results and great customer service, I highly recommend David Moore's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just terrific great fun
The first thing to hit me was how beautiful this book is.The photographs of the thousands of collectibles are delectable. It made me want to run out and find some of this stuff, or find new things to start collecting. The author unfolds her theories about why people collect, and describes many wonderful childhood scenes of Bronx life and early collections of marbles, baseball cards, sewing kits, you name it.Adult adventures collecting all over the world, and the collecting adventures of her friends and family, are included, and make for a wonderful warm biography of a collection of collectors. The descriptions of the original uses and methods of manufacturing of various collectibles is fascinating, and it's lovely to see simple and sometimes disposable things treated with such interest and respect. The history and character of our country shine through in the old graphics and designs of postcards, matchbooks, lawn sprinklers, and countless other items, and after spending time with them in this book, I can feel more deeply what's been lost to more efficient means of production. I'll never browse a flea market or garage sale quite the same way again. It's a wonderful conversation piece, a fun book to have around for guests to peruse. It gives you permission to bring out those old shoeboxes of stuff from under your bed and show them to your pals, even though you're not a kid any more.I loved this book, it was part anthropology, part history of design, part memoir, part encyclopedia, part travelogue, all work of endearing art.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for tobacco card enthuiasts!!
This comprehensive and superbly organized work is richly supplemented with numerous color and B/W photographs.A brief and informative history about various tobacco products/inserts and manufactures is provided. The book is organized principally into two units:N-series for 19th century cards (N1-N694) and T-series for 20th century cards (T1-T177).Each entry includes a brief description of the set and card appearance (front and back). The overwhelming majority of entries include an actual size photograph of a representative card (front and back) and a list of all cards in the set.Comments pertaining to card variations and prices are useful. The edge of each page is labeled with the set number to aid with rapid location of descriptions and card images. The work is peppered throughout with short vignettes and essays (published previously in various trade journals) by Dr. Terry Mitchell about specific sets or card themes.Although this is a soft cover book, the pages are printed on high grade gloss stock paper that tolerates repeated handling.Suprisingly, the book is neither overwhelming or boorish in its presentation. The brief descriptions and inclusion of images for virtually every set are effective strategies and make the book exceptionally user-friendly.No other work to date has done such a masterful job at capturing the variety of subjects, visual appeal, and historical allure of tobacco cards. This book is a must-have item for novice collectors and enthusiasts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully done; Notcomplete for all collectors
A beautifully executed publication, however as a collector of Victorian Trade Cards, I was greatly dissapointed NOT to find ANY of the cards in my collection listed.I would have expected at least ONE to have beenreferred to, but the items in the book are mostly geared to the collectorof tobacco insert cards. If this is your thing, this is your book.Forgetit if you are more geared to Tradecard collecting

At first, I was just skimming through this book, but I got caught up in it and I am learning a lot!Good book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Grandma stories got old
I thought this book was interesting, but I wish there was more useable information and less talk about Grandma.I understand that Grandma played an important part but I was looking for more.I hope in future books the author could talk more about how she aquired items (not inherited) and how they did at auction. This author has great style and I stilled learned a lot from reading this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration to Get Posting!
Everytime I read a few pages of this book it makes me wonder why I've waited so long to start posting all of my garage sale finds to Ebay. I have a spare bedroom full of bargains I've found for the intent of posting. This book actually motivates me to do it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Exhibition of Showbills
If you ever have a chance for a collector to show his collection, you run the risk of being terribly bored.Unless you yourself collect stamps, coins, thimbles, Hummel figurines, or Corvettes, you are unlikely to sympathize with the delight the collector takes in his hoard.Ricky Jay is a fascinating man; he is a master magician, a historian of show business (especially of novelty acts), and an actor in David Mamet's movies. He collects something few others do: showbills for the jugglers, magicians, animal acts, ventriloquists, and other eccentric and novelty performances through almost four centuries. Don't worry, it is far from boring.Around eighty of his specimens are on display in a large format book, _Extraordinary Exhibitions: The Wonderful Remains of an Enormous Head, the Whimsiphusicon & Death to the Savage Unitarians_ (Quantuck Lane Press). The broadsides are funny and beautiful, and Jay's learned and enthusiastic commentary about each one is on the page facing each specimen. It is all thoroughly entertaining, and like any show advertising, the posters make you wonder if the acts are really as described. There is so much verbal and graphic hyperbole on display here that a bit of incredulity is only sensible, but still: who, if confronted by an announcement for Signor Cappelli and his Learned Cats, with assurances that after he introduces his cats to the audience, they will "beat a drum, turn a spit, grind knives, strike upon an anvil, roast coffee, ring bells, set a piece of Machinery in motion to grind rice in the Italian manner with many other astonishing exercises", who, I say, would let incredulity overcome a wish to get a peek at the show?
5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Exhibitions - A wonderful book!
This is a wonderful book by a truly genius author. Also, make sure you put Ricky Jay's other books on your list.He has a great mind and his books are phenomenal!
5-0 out of 5 stars This latest Jay offering is a must-buy
Ricky Jay is a national treasure. He's the head curator of a continuing collection of the curious, marginal, sometimes macabre but always compelling congregation of entertainers who have slipped through the trapdoor of time's stage. His newest masterpiece, Extraordinary Exhibitions, is a catalogue of broadsides heralding some of the strangest performers that ever graced an auditorium or a sidewalk. You'll meet Pietro Stadelmann, a seventeenth century armless dulcimer player. As well as the nameless 27 year-old Angolan "Famous African Hermaphrodite".And a South American trio whose huge excrescences extruding from their chins gave them their stage moniker "The Monstrous Craws".You can sit at the feet of Joice Heth, the 161 year-old former nursemaid of Little Georgie Washington, the marvelous showman P. T. Barnum's first client. There's singing mice, educated fleas and a Rabbi whose demonstrations of his prodigious memory were endorsed by the Pope himself. To paraphrase the immortal Charles Fort, you'll see a procession of the damned of showbiz. And thanks to the wonderful Mr. Jay, they'll walk (and bark, tumble, juggle, catch bullets, arm wrestle, rope dance and eat stones) again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A VINTAGE LOOK AT HALLOWEEN
We Americans tend to be somewhat near-sighted in our view of Halloween in thinking that our celebration of the day is relatively a modern fascination. And, in truth, Halloween has boomed in the past twenty years to become second only to Christmas in decorating and celebrating the season. As Diane C. Arkins shows in this wonderful book, however, Halloween has been widely celebrated for well over one hundred years and this book concentrates on what Arkins calls Halloween's golden age from the 1870's to the 1930's.The book is filled with hundreds of vintage photographs, illustrations, and magazine reprints from the period.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cool Little Book
Veteran guitar collector and store owner Dave Rogers serves as the guitar consultant on this book. Since I've been to his store, Dave's Guitar Shop, in La Cross, Wisconsin -- a great guitar shop you should check out if you're in the Midwest -- and bought a guitar there, I thought I'd pick up this field guide when I saw it. I'm glad I did. The book rocks. It's simply a fun little book packed with cool guitars and amps. You'll find all the major players -- Telecasters and Strats, Les Paul, Chet Atkins Gretsch models, Rickenbacker, Epiphone and the like -- but the book also features a Gretsch Penguin, Gibson Flying Vs and a slew of funky Danelectros, Kays, Moserites, and others. There's also a nice selection of Eric Clapton guitars that set all sorts of records at auction. Add another 50 pages or so of amps and you have a superpackage. The color pictures -- there's more than 400 -- are clean and sharp. Does the book have everything? No, but it covers a lot. The vintage guitar market is hot, so guitar prices are volatile. You might argue with some of the pricing but all and all, this is a cool little book. A great stocking stuffer for Christmas. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor binding mars otherwise terrific book.
A beautiful book filled with beautiful pictures of beautiful (and bizzare) Japanese toys. What more could one ask for? Well, how about a book that stays in one piece for more than 30 minutes. After less than half an hour of gentle reading the wraparound cover became unglued from the rest of the book. I'll glue the cover back on and cross my fingers nothing more comes loose, but this is a hassle, and not the first time such a thing has happened with a Chronicle Book: my copy of Eric Kohler's "In the Groove" found itself In the Trash soon after both cover and pages came loose from the el-cheapo glue binding. Message to Chronicle Books: it's the 21st Century, and high time books be bound to last more than a day. Either have your current printer improve his binding, or get a new printer. And yes, I'd be willing to pay a little more for better binding. My rating: content =5 stars, presentation = 1 star.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe it . . .
I, too, am disappointed by the negative reviews of this book.Collectors (which, sadly, I am not) will recognize that this book is not intended to be a catalog, but a showcase of some of the strange and beautiful Japanese toys.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book very comical!

5-0 out of 5 stars A TV GUIDE FAN'S DREAM BOOK!
The episode of Seinfeld where Frank Costanza was noted to be a collector of TV Guide pretty much cemented that publication's place in the lore of pop culture. Now, from Bangzoom publishers comes "TV Guide" the official Collector's Guide.A lot of collector's books claim to be the only book you'd ever need to own but this one truly fits the bill. With over 3700 pictures, and every national and regional TV Guide cover pictured from 4/10/1953 through 10/19/2005 this is truly the ultimate resource for not only collectors, but fans of the magazine as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the serious collector
I have been interested in the science of jewelry for 40 years, and am a metalsmith as well.I have been collecting books for many years, and this is one of the best.In addition to having wonderful color photographs, space has been given to showing the back of major pieces, to show construction and craftsmanship. The book is well organized to show the progression of design by the house of Bvlgari, from beginning to current day.If you are serious about jewelry, this book will provide many hours of enjoyment, and will be an excellent reference book for style research.

If you collect jewelry or jewelry books, this is a must for your library. Out of the forty or so books I have on jewelry, this is my favorite.Asone might expect, there is page after page of breathtaking pictures ofexquisite jewelry. However, this book offers so much more. Many of thejewelry pieces are shown next to the sketches that inspired them.Asection of the book entitled `From the Idea to the Finished Product',proceeds to discuss and show some of the labor-intensive steps involved inmaking these works of art. The text equally is well written. It provides ahistory of the company and its designers as well as a look at the evolutionof the company's style. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great resource, but are the prices realistic?
I have owned most editions of this book, and as a resource for researching Coca Cola memorabilia, I would have to say it is unsurpassed.I haven't seen any other guides come close in the number of items shown.2-0 out of 5 stars Fed Up With This One, Too
Right off the bat: I agree that the omission of blotters and assorted other collectibles from this guide is a gaping omission as big as a barn. I hardly use this guide anymore for several reasons:1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much HYPE !
A lot of pictures. Prices that reflect nothing on reality. Not one Cleveland Electric Neon Clock. Not one American Time Clock. I have 3 originals hanging in front of me. Missing some of the major buttons. Typical collectors book. Pictures of everything that's out there, except the rare items you buy these books to find out about. Total dissapointment. I have stacks of collector books that have proven useless. There all written by the "authority" on the subject on hand. I think this explains the ... in collecting and the stacks of used books available. If you're going to make a "Know It All" book, than you better know at least %90. Monster let down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard Price Guide to U.S. Scouting Collectibles (Standard
What a great resourse book.A must have for the avid collector or the novice.Besides collecting, it is a great companion piece to learn about the Boy Scouts and 20th Century Americana in general.I commend Mr. Cuhaj for all the work and time he put into creating this. I'm so glad some one thought enough of me to make this a perfect gift for the Scouter who has everything.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Year 2001 U.S. Scout Collectibles Reference Work
This is the 2nd, updated edition of the popular volume. Its 400 pages feature more than 750 nice black and white photos and a 16 page full color section. There is adequate text to accompany the photos, and it is fully indexed to aid in item location. All major levels of scouting are featured, along with collectibles, council listings, glossary of terms, memorabilia dealers, collector organizations, museums and reference works. It's an essential guide for scout collectible enthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Standard Price Guide To U. S. Scouting Collectibles" 2nd Ed
This is an excellent book for anyone who collects Boy Scouts of America memorabilia such as insignia, pins, books, Order Of The Arrow, just about anything that has been involved in Scouting. It details many items extensively, and provides price ranges based on condition. The first edition did not have an index, and it was rather difficult to find certain items, but Cuhaj corrected that in this second edition. The magnitude of this book is tremendous, providing over 11,000 listings, most with values for buying, selling, or just trading. There are a few pages in color, while the rest is in black and white.I would have preferred all items in color, and would have been willing to pay more for the book.If Scouting memorabilia is your forte, I highly recommend this book with a 5-Star rating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour De Force of Novelty History!
The "TARGET:" lines on "The Laffs" pages alone are worth the price of the book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
Everything that the editorial material above says is true: this handsomely photographed and crisply designed book is packed with oddball novelties from the preeceeding century. What the above does not convey is that Cheap Laffs is also laugh (or should I say "laff") out loud funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Educational, a great read for all levels!
If you like to learn about something through stories and the art of storytelling, this is the book for you! Instead of the "usual" litany of computer screen shots showing how to use eBay, Lynn's books impart knowledge by giving her stories context, weaving intricate personal tales with real eBay auctions and creating an extremely compelling read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gobs of valuable advice to sell, sell, sell on eBay!
Lynn Dralle's new book is chock-full of funny, smart, and just plain entertaining examples of how she raked in the bucks on eBay selling everything from yard-sale and thrift-store finds to pieces of her inheritance from her antique-savvy grandma. The stories about Lynn's grandma are also touching, and Lynn shares the golden nuggets of advice she collected from that wise lady, such as how antique lamp parts can be worth big bucks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lynn Dralle shares more secrets
Love learning from someone who's really done it...here's more examples. One of the best ways to develop the knack is to study real-life examples of items sold on eBay. This book is full of them, and gave me lots of ideas to further develop my own business on eBay. Thanks Lynn, another great book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
The compilers have done a wonderful job; the layouts are absolutely marvelous, a real pleasure to flip through, great retro colors used, and should be an essential addition to the collection of anyone who enjoys 50s & 60s graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great compendium of retro product logos
Tons of product logos here, with the bulk of them from the 30s to the 70s. These are reproduced very well, and each of them is dated and carries a two-line description of their purpose and company origin. There are a few pages of introductory front matter that summarize the history of product logos, but the meat of the book is taken up by the graphics, with anywhere from one to four logos per page. I didn't know there were so many anthropomorphic logos, among them Mr. Coffee Nerves, Mr. Dee-Lish, Mr. TV Tube, Phillips Screw Man, Johnny-One-Note, Miss My-T-Fine, Miss Fluffy Rice and Mr. Weatherball. Many of them you'll recognize, and some of them you won't, but all of them will delight you.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute book!
A fascinating foray into the sometimes clever, sometimes idiotic, occasionally just plain bizarre (Mr. TV Tube?Dunkie Donut-Head?Phillips Screw Man??) world of advertising characters.Anybody obsessed with kitschy pop culture, especially that of the 50's and 60's, will want this one.You get all the cartoon mascots you've ever seen on "retro" t-shirts at your local Hot Topics, plus hundreds more of varying degrees of obscurity.Indeed there was a period when designers would simply draw a smiley face on a cog and call it "Mr. Cog," and you see a lot of that here, often in hilariously weird contexts - lawn spinkler heads, pistons, the state of Nevada, a sock, all grinning amiably at you as they pitch themselves. You've got your cartoon pigs voraciously devouring pork rinds, your cigarette boxes with showgirl legs, your anthropomorphic donuts, and robots robots robots.A book like this not only takes you through a wide range of illustration styles, it hints at what life was like in those days, those "simpler times" (though it's arguable how much we've really changed). What better window into American psychology in the 20th century than the commercial devices by which we've been beguiled into consuming?Aunt Jemima has stories to tell on you. ...
