3-0 out of 5 stars Good but....
I am no expert at gi joe collecting but I did not find what I was looking for in this book. It has very nice color pictures but is extremely specific and repetitive. This may seem good for some people but not for me. It does not include the spec for the Deep diver, vehicles and some equipment. Also it does not include many boxes that you can easily see on the net. I do not know if I can rely in its price guide also. The book is mainly focused in showing one pic of single items and in describing the subtle differences between one series and another of the SAME figure in almost all cases. The format is in two column and you have to go reading from the top to bottom and to the top again so it becomes kind of confusing to read at first.
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful tool
A straight-forward catalogue of Joe figures and accessories from the beginning through the 4" era and on to today. Black & white pictures are plentiful. Not the book for blissful page-flipping and reminiscing, but definitely the place to turn for organizing your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correcting a reviewer
I would like to correct a statement made by reviewer Andrew Walls regarding the "official" status of GI Joe: An Official Identification and Price Guide (1964-1999). This book, like others writtenby Vincent Santelmo on GI Joe, was licensed and the manuscript was reviewedand approved by Hasbro Inc. As Acquisitions Editor at Krause Publications,I was involved in every step of this legal process. I can understand thereviewer's confusion since many publishers don't take the necessary stepsnor commit the time and expense to create licensed or "official"books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point.
This book is a good starting point for collectors. With information on vintage dolls and even some newer dolls too. This book explains How to use the price guide, since most dolls found are not truly mint or mint in the box. It also has lots of color photographs, to make identification of a doll easy. The layout of this book is nice too, there are different sections for dolls, outfits, cases and so on. Dolls are listed by year, making a particular Barbie or Friend fairly easy to find. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST
This book had a lot of information I was looking for but not all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Star Wars - The Return on the Jedi....
The book is a marvelous resource of information regarding the value of virtually every Star Wars Collectible imaginable. As the author warns, it is a guidline document and so should be treated as suggestion and not absolute in the values listed. As such, it is a tremendous compendium of useful information...with a few errors. As an example, I have an item that appears to have been missed and so its value isn't addressed. There is also an entry error involving an erroneous photographic reference. And in a book this extensive, it's understandable. It is a great reference document and I am glad to have a copy.I recommend it highly!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that great for trading cards

5-0 out of 5 stars Xmas magic
Even if you're not particularly sentimental about Christmas, the images and recollections of the authors are a delightful experience. The photos and graphics are charming and magical, obviously done by people who truely love the Christmas season. Anyone can appreciate the vintage flavor of this little gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" book for pipe collectors.
As a collector and admirer of meerschaum pipes, this is the book I've been waiting for. The author, Ben Rapaport, is well known among antique pipe fanciers for his earlier works, including the standard work,CompleteGuide to Collecting Antique Pipes (which discusses all types of antiquepipes not just meerschaums, published in 1979 and recently reprinted) andthe lovely and informative Museum of Tobacco Art and History Guidebook(1996). But his newly published book, Collecting Antique Meerschaum Pipes,is in a class by itself.Although Rapaport is the leading authority inthis area, he primarily lets the pipes do the talking. Of the 176 pages, the first 50 contain the scholarly background which addresses the questionsof how, who, why and where these pipes were created. But even in thissection at least half of the pages are dedicated to wonderful photographsof pipes, old catalogs, craftsmen and workshops. The remainder of the bookis an absolutely gorgeous album of some of the most beautiful andextraordinary meerschaum pipes ever sculpted. The photographs are large sothat one may see the exquisite detail, and where appropriate the reader isprovided with additional particularly detailed pictures. The photography isof exceptional quality, as one would expect to find in a first-rate artbook. At the end of the book the author provides a compilation ofthe 19thand early 20th century manufacturers and sellers of these pipes organizedby country and city, and an international listing of museums and shopswhere one might view some of these treasures today. It is hard to imaginethat anyone other than Ben Rapaport could have created a book like this. The book brings together his many years of experience as an author andcollector. But just as importantly he is known and respected by the manycollectors who were willing to provide him with their pipes for inclusionin this collection. If you collect pipes, if you enjoy viewing smallsculptures, if you are a fan of "working art," if you want totake a look into a small and not particularly well known world of masterartists and craftsman of the late 19th and early 20th century then you oweit to yourself to buy this sumptuous book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly an encylopedia of soda pop
I applaud the author for attempting to catalog the arcane world of old soda pop advertising, a difficult task when you're overshadowed by the 500-lb gorilla of Coca-Cola advertising. However, this book does not do enough to fill in the gaps of soda pop history. There is no attempt made to identify the years or bottlers of the soda pop brands illustrated. The collectibles pictured are organized by type of object rather than type of soda pop or region. A simple index of known soda pop manufacturers, their locations and years in business would have added so much more to this book. And why not a timeline to give the types of collectibles a little context in the history of bottling? Just a few extra pages would have added a lot of value to a thick book which is taking up more of my shelf space than its worth! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Forest Beauty
This book is the first serious study of this genre. The authors have put together a bonanza of information including not only serious academic research but the most amazing photos. Bears on skis, majestic eagles, faithful hounds, and amazing sculpture, leap out of the pages...The authors point out that this whole ouvre has long been ignored and needs to be re-classified for what it really is, a serious, 19th/early 20th century art form. The chapter on international exhibitions, for example, puts a completely different perspective on Black Forest. The book is thoroughly readable and also refreshingly unpretentious. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Size makes this book handy.
This books size makes it convenient to carry around to garage sales or toy shows. But the content could be better, some dolls are depicted with inaccurate prices and some vintage doll's aren't pictured in their proper outfits with proper accessories. So this can become confusing for the beginner collector. However there are "warnings"listed with some vintage outfits stating that Mattel has made a reproduction (these are worth far less) of it. This is a great feature if you are not a Barbie expert. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great things come in small packages
What a wonderful book! The Warman's Barbie Doll Field Guide is packed with useful information and great color photographs. And all at a super affordable price. I'm impressed. The book is designed as a take-along pocket guide, yet it's amazingly complete and thorough. It covers six decades of Barbie dolls, provides several hundred color photographs, a history of Barbie, critical identification information,-- including how to identify Barbie No. 1 -- fashion sets, designer dolls and a price guide to more than 1,500 dolls. It's perfect for a gift or for yourself, or even as a gift for yourself. I have several Barbie books on my shelves, and that's where they stay. But this little dynamo is never going to leave my side.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's so small
First thought upon getting this, it's tiny! I've been waiting at least two months for this book to come out and I was a tad upset that the price guide is not up-to-date. NOTHING that came out in 2002 is in there, nor are any non-collector dolls listed. Read more
