secrets of the universe
Zine writers tend to do best uncovering secret histories: hobo graffiti tales by freight-hopping filmmaker Bill Daniel, or writing about the street ear-cleaners of New Delhi, or where to find brand-new karaoke machines in Japan for free (and why this happens). 8-tracks and those insane Jack T. Chick pamphlets are also nicely covered. Some parts are not as interesting, but this reflects the huge range of interests covered in this anthology.

Book doesn't quite live up to website
I purchased Semling's book based on the quality of his website, "Brians Toys."If you are new to collecting Star Wars, I recommed this book.If you already know the basics, you may want to look elsewhere.The book has large quality photographs, but the writing is at about a highschool level.

A real must
A mind-boggling array of beautiful and outlandish objects from the 1950s explained, illustrated and priced, with a real sense of perspective and a light-hearted approach. Every page has something to make the collectorgasp, and it's not all just the usual 50s Americana -- there's a strongemphasis on stuff from the UK and Europe, including some glorious textilesand enough emphemera to thrill the most jaded collector. A much-neededguide to a still under-explored era of collectables. A real must for anyonewith even the remotest interest in understanding both the era and theorigins of the objects that help make it seem so glamorous today.

This is an **excellent** resource book! It's not only chock full o' cool color pictures, it has lots ofreally informative text--a rare combination. Finally! A Monkees collectible book!
I am late on reviewing this book but had to comment. I LOVE this book. Very goog work and research! Great photography! It's so nice to see someone put this much effort in a Monkees collectible book. My only complaint is the records are not valued correctly. We need a Monkees record collecting guide. If not for values, just to see the great world wide covers of the albums, single and EP's that differ from country to country. The Monkees are collectibles...........
I love this book it has everything you need to know what is very valuable. There's a lot of interesting stuff in it that was very popular and sold very well back then when the Monkees were quite hot......So I also consider this book a classic because it has so much information in it I just love it......

A detailed look into the early years of Star Wars collectibles
I have been a big Star Wars fan since the first film was released back in 1977. I used to own many of the old action figures and played with them all the time up until my grandmother gave them away to the Goodwill. I picked up this book in 1997 just as I was getting back into collecting Star Wars figures once again. This is a very detailed book with lots of great color photos. Seeing the pictures of all of the older toys brought back a lot of memories. And it makes you stop and think about how much your old collection would have been worth if you had saved it. I recommend this book to anyone who is a true Star Wars fan and collector. You will not be disappointed.

Very useful book, packed with information and great graphics
Dave Cooper has produced a valuable reference work about the portable spring-motored HMV gramophone (phonograph), and a quite beautiful one at that. This is not a subject that has been treated before with such lustrous detail. The story begins in the mid-1920s and finishes as late as 1960 or so (perhaps later if one considers models manufactured in India). All of the models have been illustrated or photographed with their respective color and other model variations (my favorite is the De Luxe Model 101 with crocodile leatherette exterior). Very useful information is detailed for each model, such as mechanical or stylistic variations through the production histories, which make it easy to date your own machine (my red 102 is from about 1950, it turns out). And some very unusual machines are illustrated as well, made for Asian markets or special orders.Read more

Not the Best!
Nice pictures, but author knows nothing about Zippo!Captions don't fit the pictures, prices are way off, but its nice to look at.Would not use as a reference book.

Zippo Lighters Book-The Facts PLEASE
While the book has some interesting information on the subject of Zippo lighters, I feel too much space is used to show old magazine ads for Zippo lighters. This space could have been used for more pictures of actual Zippo lighters and updated pictures from inside the Zippo factory. The pictures of the plant itself show workers putting Zippos in the old flame boxes which were only used until 1976. The other main issue of my dissapointment was the apparent lack of research that went in to the writing of the book. There are many errors in the style names of lighters shown in the pictures as well as the values. The biggest error that stuck in my head was where they said Zippo manufacturing cleans the lighters before they return them to the customers after they go through the repair clinic.
