4-0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy Book for the Noritake Addict
Joan VanPatten's book is not for the china pattern enthusiast. This book is for serious Noritake collectors who want to see the broad range of products this fantastic factory produced in its early years.3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but barely skims the surface of available patterns
Nice reference book, easy to follow with a price guide in the back. Unfortunatly, it has a limited number of patterns represented and no information on the types of pieces available for all but 4 or 5 patterns. I purchased this book hoping to learn more about the Rosemarie #6044 patternI inherited from my father, but will have to try again with a differentreference. I ended up keeping it for the information on patterns from the1920's. It's helped me identify a Morimura Luncheon set from 1922 and otherNoritake items I've purchased. The book also contains some limitedinformation on old advertisements and some care suggestions for fine china. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Meissen: Collector's Catalogue
I agree with another reviewer and was disappointed by the book. There is very little information about marks, periods, maker's marks (no pictures at all) and ninety percent of the photos of Meissen ware are in black and white and are not of the best quality. It definitely isn't a collector's catalogue as most of the pieces are unavailable to the public (unless they have a lot of money). As a new collector it did not help me at all. There is a book by Jim and Susan Harran called "Meissen Porcelain Identification and Value Guide" which has amazing photos and gives far greater detail on the products, the background, the marks (and forgery's) of this fascinating maker of porcelain.

1-0 out of 5 stars dissapointing
I was deeply frustrated, by the quality of paper, the poor print quality, lack of sharpness of colors and the fact that, the great majority of the plates are in black and white. I felt deceived... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, intriguing, and informative
This book is an incredible resource for a collecter. Webster's passion for thorough research is evident as he weaves stories about WDC's history into a very practical price guide. He approaches the subject as a storyteller, researcher, curator, and glassware dealer. This reminds the reader of why we get into collecting in the first place; it goes beyond the object and into how the object came to be. Webster's book teaches us about why this glassware was made and encourages us to ask similar questions about the material world around us. He strikes a fine balance between the technical, practical, and personal aspects of telling the story of the Wheeling Decorating Company. This is a most impressive debut and I hope we will see more from this fine author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Guide to the 20th Century's Top 500 China Patterns
As a fan of mismatched china, whose collection has been profiled in the New York Times, I recommend DINNERWARE OF THE 20TH CENTURY to both expert dealers and novices who love to entertain in style.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book that I turn to every week.
As a novice dealer of new and antique dinnerware, this book has been an invaluable resource for identification and valuation. You will not learn a lot about any one manufacturer in this book because it focuses on the mostdesirable PATTERNS, featuring clear photos and basic pricing information. Ifind myself leafing through it often, even when I'm not looking for aparticular pattern. If you don't specialize in one manufacturer's wares, but buy and sell a lot of different patterns, you really shouldn't bewithout this handy reference book. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good as a basic guide
It lists good marks so you can date the pieces and is easy to understand. This is not a history book and doesn't do much for detail. I was able to find similar items and get a general price. My understand is that I will need to get the other books as each volums supposedly has more items. I will purchase the others, too.2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
Only a few small black and white photos.Guide says 1999 prices. No year produced information asssociated with any of the items listed, so if you collect vintage this is of no help in identifying when a piece was made.Am returning this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If These Pots Could Talk
This is a comprehensive review of British pottery and ceramics written by eminent retired archeologist of Colonial Williamsburg and writer Ivor Noel-Hume. It reviews British ceramics for a period covering the past 2000 years and is particularly interesting to Americans because most of the ceramics recovered in American colonial sites were of British origin or European origin associated with the British colonial trade and were therefore exported to the colonies. Noel-Hume is an excellent and entertaining writer and he make the book interesting with personal accounts of how he and his wife Audrey, also an eminent archeologist, collected or recovered many of the examples shown. I would recomend this book to anyone interested archeaology or pottery/ceramics.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BOOK! INFORMATIVE! DETAILED! GREAT PHOTOS AND DESCRIPTIONS!
When I look for a good book on pottery and Porcelain, I always look for something that will not "lull me to sleep" with drole monotone type sentences, but rather something that presents not only important details, facts and descriptions but does so in a interesting manner. With "If these Pots Could Talk" you get everything! From enjoyable "in the field stories" to truly illuminating facts that ever increases ones appreciation of the "pots and dishes" that so many are hasty to overlook once they hear that they hold no "intristic market value".
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice book by Mr. Hume
The quality of the book is unsurpassed, beautiful photographs of the pottery items. The book even has two built in ribbon bookmarks, something rarely seen these days.Hume's use of the language has always been amazing to me, he writes very well, and always has.His colorful career is reflected in his writing, and the collection of artifacts from GB.I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Colonial American or British archeology, or pottery from the past centuries."Bravo" to the Chipstone Foundation and Ivor Noel Hume! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A useful guide if you know what you're looking for...
This is a very well put together and compact book which provides a comprehensive listing of a variety of Beswick pieces and their values. If you know the name of the piece you are trying to find, this book is useful. However, it does not photographically catalogue all pieces, which makes it difficult to look up a piece if you aren't certain what it is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful To Any Blue Ridge Collector
I found this very useful.I have seven different Blue Ridge Pottery books that I used to identify over 1000 pieces I owned. Now I have dispursed my collection and have no use for my books so I will sell them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for serious collectors!
This book is a wonderful follow-up to their first book! The pictures are clear; as are the names, descriptions and prices. What more could you ask for to assist you in making knowledgeable decisions about Blue Ridge Pottery? We have used this book and their previous book to help us price new pieces for our collection and have found them both to be invaluable! This book is especially good at showing some of the harder-to-find Blue Ridge pieces! Another "must-have" for any serious collector!

4-0 out of 5 stars Grudgingly necessary
There is a lifetime of information stuffed into these two unwieldy volumes. For anyone seriously interested in the legacy of Josiah Wedgwood or in the development of the pottery business in Britain in the late 18th century - or simply in the beauty of the objects illustrated - this massive undertaking is a necessity. Any objections are quibbles. It's difficult to use without a library stand or table. Its layout is workmanlike and the illustrations cry out for more color and larger size. ... Read more
