5-0 out of 5 stars Title confusing - but charming collection
I see from a previous review that the title of this collection is confusing since it seems to indicate that there is information on Halloween customs in the book...I think this is arising from the fact that this is a companion book to the ACTUAL book (by the same author) called "Romantic Art and Customs of Yesteryear".If you take this one as an extention of that book (to give people the art as a separate, usable item) it makes more sense.I love it as the little vintage window it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Double your Halloween fun - get 2 copies!
I have a reasonable collection of postcard books, and I sincerely like Halloween. That's why I bought this.
2-0 out of 5 stars Halloween: Romantic Art and Customs Of Yesteryear Postcard B
Customs?...what customs? This is just a collection of tear-out postcard reprints with no comments, far less writing, to go along with them. On top of that, none of the "notable" ones are shown (Schmucker, Clapsaddle, etc.). Another "why did I buy this?" item to put on the shelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beware!Highly misleading entry!
Be warned! This little book of lovely Halloween postcards is very nice, but NOT the one shown.1. The title is simply "Halloween Postcards," not the much longer title indicated.2. The picture shown in the listing does not appear either on the cover or inside. If you use the "Search Inside" feature you can see what's really on offer, including the real cover.3. The incomparable Ellen H. Clapsaddle did a few of these postcards but by no means all or even a majority of them, so she can hardly be fairly described as the "author."4. There are only 10 postcards, so saying the book contains 24 pages (and that includes both sides of the front and back covers!) is again very misleading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine art in 3 1/2 x 5 1/2"
The art on the postcard is the focus and this book does a great job of picturing different views of the holidays.Starting with a brief history of the post card and publishers, she then presents some common symbolism. She moves through the year, covering each of the holidays. At New Year's are images of pigs pulling a coach. On Valentines days is the "Penny Dreadful", with ill wishes from someone you may have wronged. At Christmas are Louis Wain's cats, which can be rare (and the relative prices of the cards are indicated). She includes holidays not commonly celebrated in the states today, such as Guy Fawkes Day, the Mexican Day of the Dead, and Krampus. Because of her own collection, the images of Halloween are spectacular and a highlight of the book. My only minor complaint would be that on some of the light backgrounds her annotations are hard to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures!
This is a very good book in terms of introducing the different holidays/postcard themes that can be found. It has really great pictures and I guess what I take away most is the general ideas on what is considered valuable/rare.I just collect ones I like and think are attractive, I don't really collect because of the collectability, so this book was helpful for me in getting ideas on what else I might like and should look for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Postmarked Yesteryear
If you have any interest in vintage holiday postcards, or just an interest in "holiday history/graphic symbolism", this wonderful book is a "must-own". The examples shown, and the writing in general, could not have been better. It is NOT a book you put on the shelf and forget about. Joe Hohmann, Media, PA ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanksgiving and Turkey Collectibles
A very practical book illustrating a hugh plethora of thanksgiving related collectibles in all shapes and sizes of which I was not aware. The author must have a hugh collection which was beautifully photographed over 13 full chapters with very detailed captions and price values. It seems to be the definitive guide in this holiday collectibe arena.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turkey for Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving and Turkey Collectibles is the most comprehensive book on turkey memorabilia that I have ever seen. This book is a handy reference guide for those who collect and value turkey memorabilia. The author no doubt has one of the largest collections of its kind.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD!
I guess being more a fan than a collector of postcards I have a different opinion than some of the reviewers who rated this book so low.Regarding prices, the fact is that on any collectible prices vary widely depending on your location and method of selling. As a long-time collector of toys and comic books, I can attest to that. Thus the criticism about pricing is completely invalid as this is merely a "guide" as any pricing guide is.I also would dispute the claim that many of the cards are in poor condition. Some are but the vast majority are not.We are talking about items that are in the neighborhood of one hundred years old so they are not all going to be in mint condition.I think the editors did a fantastic job of giving readers a very broad cross-section of types and styles of cards, regardless of condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pages come packed with color photos of seasonal cards organized by holiday along with current prices
Robert and Claudette Reed's Postcards For The Holidays, 2nd Edition arrived too late for more timely Christmas mention, but since holiday collecting is really a year-round occupation, it's not too late to mention the ongoing reference value of Postcards For The Holidays Identification & Value Guide, which appears in its 2nd updated edition. Pages come packed with color photos of seasonal cards organized by holiday along with current prices. The chapters each introduce with a history of manufacturers and approaches to further the educational teachings.
1-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition is a Big Disapointment
I am really disapointed in the second edition because it is basically a repeat of the first edition.Although there are more pages in the second edition, this books shows the same postcards as the first edition. Also, the text is the same. It's like buying the same book only there are a few new postcards added. The authorsdid remove pictures of beat up postcards and replaced them with new cards they must have added to their collection, but they never changed the prices of what the cards are worth.Granted, the first book was published in 2002, and the second editionhas a copyright of 2006, but every postcard collector wants to see their collection has increased in value-especially the Halloween cards. The values were not even increased by a dollar! The Easter section and Santa Claus sections are lengthier and the cover is attractive, but this is not my idea of what a second edition should be.The publishers and editors should have been more critical. There is not one Winsch or Schmucker card shown in any of the holidays and any collector knows, these are the cream of the crop, especially with Halloween cards. As much as I like the format and appreciate the book being in color, I was really upset not to see more new postcards and a change in postcard values. This shows lack of research and I feel like the book was hastily thrown together.Don't buy it if you own the first edition and hesitate about the second edition.I didn't think it was worth the price being charged. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Visual Work
I really enjoyed this book. The brief descriptions make the cards easier to understand by putting them into the historical perspective of beliefs and practices of late 19th and early 20th century Europe. Most of the cards are colorful and impressive, depicting different styles of the Krampus, having both humanistic and animistic qualities. This is definitely a good buy if you're interested in seeing the postcards without too much reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hellfire For Christmas
Monte Beauchamp's dazzling The Devil in Design: The Krampus Postcards (2004) is a collection of 147 vintage images of the dark and Pan - like Krampus, who, with his guiding companion St. Nikolaus, visited German and Austrian children at Christmastime. But while St. Nikolaus rewarded the well behaved with small gifts, Krampus, as a more active presence, not only left switches for disobedient children with which their parents could beat them, but spanked, shackled, and even kidnapped the worst juvenile offenders, who were carried away and thrown into hell. Thus, a child's good behavior at Christmastime and indeed throughout the year took on an entirely different folkloric coloring than it did in America, a continent to which Krampus never successfully emigrated, though other parts of Europe had similar "dark" Christmas traditions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Collectors guide?
Horrible prints, can hardly see details, blury pictures in black and white (a very few colored). Set up is okay, but again, pictures are horrible and crammed into the page. A waste of money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices
The title "Collector's Guide..." led me to believe that there would be informational text about dating, printing techniques, and other descriptive information about post cards. The book is entirelyillustrations of post cards in various categories and their prices...finefor long-time collectors, but useless for someone seeking historicalinformation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Short on info, long on pictures, prices outmoded
This reference book for postcard collectors is entirely given over to images of the cards themselves, with no history, grading guide, or other information. That being said, it has thousands of photos of various kindsof postcards, well organized by subject (but I wish the reproduction wereclearer). The prices are dated, and do not reflect the impact that Ebay,Amazon, and other online auction houses have had on postcard availability. All in all it's a nice pictorial reference, but not a must-have. ... Besides being a good resource guide, the compilation of information is in chronological order. This makes for effortless accessibility. The writing is clear, informative, and well researched. The author took time and care to put these postcards in this format. I can only assume that the author has a love for the movie industry and all the machinations it takes to make the final product. I hope to see more from this author in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like your own postcard show
Tom Phillips has captured the quest for collecting postcards with an eclectic mix of cards from the last century. We may view old postcards as nostalgic (for a history that never was), but when printed the card often pictured the latest thing. Being English, there are many Winston Churchill cards (as early as 1908), Prince Charles, the Queen, and Margaret Thatcher. There are plenty of cards for Americans, and a 1960 Nixon card is a favorite, as well as the original Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1947.In each year, a card from Piccadilly Circus and the New York skyline are included, as well as 10-15 other subjects. The cards reflect the changes of the time but also constancy, and many of the old jokes and statuesque women are recycled in each decade.
