5-0 out of 5 stars postcards made from Kodak camera influencing subjects and styles of later photography
In the early 1900s, Kodak promoted real photo postcards which could be mailed for one cent through the post office using the company's first inexpensive, portable camera made for the public. Such a post card could be made out of any photograph taken by the camera. The nearly 200 real photo cards show the variety of ways the public responded to this opportunity to try out the new camera and get in touch with relatives and friends. People would send photos of parades, circuses, snowstorms, and pictures of themselves, often in playful poses or amusing settings. Some of the cards were surreal-like with their distortions in the sizes of objects; which could also be amusing, as one from Kansas where a giant cricket is attacking a car and the note, "See what we have to put up with out here." The amateurish, popular use and subjects is apparent in practically all of the photo postcards. But what is also apparent--pointed out in the brief introductory essay--is the real photo postcards' part in familiarizing the public with the camera and interesting them in its possibilities, laying the grounds for the photojournalism and the art photography of the following decades. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Historical Perspective Of Santa Claus
The author has put together a wonderful book that gives the reader a Santa Claus history & how events of the times were seen in Santa postcards through the years. Santa trade cards, Santa holiday cards, even Santa cards from Elvis, it covers the periods from the late 1800s to the present. Descriptions accompanying all the beautiful illustrations are really interesting, very informative. I really loved this book. Makes a great gift too.

5-0 out of 5 stars "From Hollywood, on paper".
A delightful book of postcards that captures the exuberance and excitement of Tinsel town in the first half of the last century. One reason I love this book is the simple presentation, book designers, when confronted with colorful graphic images such as postcards, always seem to want to present them angled and overlapping each other.Fortunately, designer Kurt Wahlner keeps them upright and puts a drop-shadow on two sides of each card, a simple elegant solution. The color of the cards is very true to the originals.Author, Rod Kennedy, writes just enough historical detail into the captions to keep me interested. The chapter on the homes of the stars I found the most fascinating.Predictably, with money no object, so many of these houses are a fantasy of architectural styles and I suppose this only confirms that most Hollywood folk had no taste.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars THE FIRST IS NEVER THE BEST
Jacobs must be given credit for producing the very first priceguide on homefront collecting. And Jacobs has assembled photographs of some fairly uncommon items from his pool of experienced contributors. But thats where the kudos end. It is mostly all B&W with just a few color. The organization makes it almost impossible to identify an item that does not have a picture. He lists two different prices for the same item on different pages. His coverage of the homefront area is poor. He wastes several pages on listing gum cards while completely failing in the areas like anti-axis where covers, cinderellas and postcards are just about all that is listed missing ceramics, toys etc in that subcategory. He has a slug of jewelry photos that someone obviously spent a great deal of time shooting but they are all in B&W completely subduing that contribution. And his prices are plain and simply not credible especially when compared to his V For Victory book which has many of the same items but radically different prices without explanation. Overall I'd say buy it just for the pics but throw out the price guide part. Its a woefully error ridden text. An obvious rush job. I give it two stars for being the first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Remembering Charlotte: Postcards from a New South City, 1905
A showcase of early century postcards featuring the Historic Architecture of Charlotte, NC.This book is great for history buffs and postcard aficionados alike. It chronicles, in photographs, the urban development of a southern town, and the subsequent demolition of that town to make room for the emerging city development.Sadly some beautiful buildings and homes were destroyed in the process. "Remembering Charlotte" does a wonderful job of resurrecting those structures once more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone will love this book!
This is a wonderful, entertaining book! The graphics of actual World War II Postcards are fabulous!!! You will enjoy it from the minute you pick it up till you turn the very last page. The Clairday's give us a bird's eye view of the impact on the soldiers and their families during World War II. In a colorful real way, you are transported back in time while reading the notes to family, friends and loved ones. The images on those cards also speak to the history of the time. Anyone of any age can appreciate this "fun to read" book.It is a "must have" and a "great gift" for the holidays.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique experience
As one who grew up in the UK during World War II, "Postcards from World War II" provides an unexpected insight into what conditions were like in America. It never occurred to me that anyone outside Europe had price controls, food rationing and other restrictions. The text is not just a chronicle of events, it complements the numerous evocative postcards to give the reader a unique experience. Many are difficult-to-read scribbles, but are transcribed at the back so their all-important words can be read with ease. The publishers have provided high quality reproductions with unexpected clarity. This is a fine book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm a beginning postcard collector.
This book gives you a good feel for the value of postcards. Beginners will definitely get their money's worth from this guide before buying from a dealer or an online auction.
4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This guide provides prices for over 10,000 cards and will be useful for collectors, dealers, and novices. The book highlights the most collected categories, and the artist-signed chapter covers over 250 pages. The 900 postcard images, though reduced and in black and white, are useful; my favorites included the Krampus cards, Alligator border card, and the Halloween cards are a real treat.Mashburn provides short biographies of some of the artists and publishers (and even an introduction to Krampus). Although Mashburn does present some useful guidelines on topical, views, and roadside America I thought those chapters were too short in light of the vast number of cards available.Mashburn also includes references for more specific topics also. ...
