5-0 out of 5 stars Irresistible little gem of a book!
There is something addictive about this little book, filled with seemingly dull, commercial postcards from Germany. The heft and compact size of it make you want to pick it up again and again and dream about the modern Europe of the 60's and 70's. No words get in the way. The images are of autobahns, health spas, restaurants, apartment buildings...and the overall effect of seeing these tidy, newly built spaces--without people--is somehow poignant, hopeful, serene and surreal. Often, geometric shapes dominate a landscape or visual field, and the postcard becomes a reduced, abstract scene which may or may not have been photographed on earth. "Boring" postcards is strangely fascinating!

2-0 out of 5 stars For people collecting artist-signed postcards....
If you are interested in collecting artist-signed, fantasy, and greetings-type postcards, as is the author of this book, you will find more than 350 pages of this book devoted to your hobby. If you are interested incollecting postcards showing town views, real photo, and roadside America-- a much more popular hobby, as shown by the major auction websites -- youwill find only about 30 pages devoted to your hobby. There is an 8-pageintroduction useful for all collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only pick one, pick this one...
Between my mother and I, we've been collecting postcards for over 40 years (we also sell them on Ebay). Mashburn's excellent reference is the first book we recommend to people who ask us for a reference on postcardcollecting. It is organized well, filled with important history andinformation, and has thousands of pictures and prices to guide the new andthe seasoned collector. If you only buy one book about postcards, this isthe one to buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book in this field but lacks proper editing
I use this book frequently and, by adding my own "tabs" and my own cross reference table, have made it much easier to use. There are many important names in the work itself that are not shown in the index. As aresult I am now working on compiling my own index to this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book For WWII Propaganda Collectors !!
This new (year 2000) 160 page book has more than 100 full color and 100 black and white, sharp, clear photos covering propaganda postcards from 20 countries. There's plenty of text explaining the many cards, which are grouped by:U.S., The Allies, The Axis Nations, and Neutral Nations. Valuies and a nice bibliography are provided. It offers a chronicle of the trying war years and gives a good insight into the history and actions of the times. The reader is given a provocative glimpse into the emotional climate of the people affected by the war, whether they were on the battlefield or on the production line.A great insight into the history of the times.A wonderful, fascinating addition to your library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ocean Liner Postcards in Marine Art.
I echo the opinions of the first reviewer`s comments if not his star rating. As a British collector of Liner postcards I probably am biased towards it`s "Britishness" but it is unquestionably the best [and admittedly the only]book on this subject available.Look, love Liners- like lots!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Very British Book
This book could have been written in 1925. It is a model of its kind: well-organized, quite literate, and with very valuable details, appendices, and a good index. There are lists of publishers, timelines, and most important, Artists -- and that list indexes the particular card(s) in the text. Further, in this little book there is a capsule history of passenger shipping from 1837 to 1950 --and it is a far better-written, more lucid and more informative narrative than most of what passes for history these days in larger size picture-books. If you read this book you will have taken a giant step toward being a serious collector.1-0 out of 5 stars Woefully inadequate
The world of ocean liner postcards is a fascinating one, filled with exquisite exterior and interior views of long-gone ships. But this volume misses most of the best. Where are the gorgeous chromolithographed Hamburg-America cards, whose detail is astonishing and artistry is breathtaking. Has Wall never seen one? Wall has a single North German Lloyd card, out of hundreds of beautiful examples I've seen. Why? Where are the lovely Red Star cards, some so beautiful they've been turned into posters and reproduced and are for sale even now. Where are the delicate Japanese cards, so different from their European counterparts? Has Wall never seen them? Apparently not. The cards reproduced here are almost entirely British, as if only British steam ships mattered--and yet these are the most common cards available today and among the least distinguished. Furthermore, a fair number of Wall's examples are in such poor condition that no collector would have them in his or her collection. Worse yet, Wall's book is filled with small inaccuracies. Normandie cards, he says, are rare--and yet I have seen at least 200. For the person interested in ocean liner postcards--and there is good reason to be interested, both for artistic and historical reasons--this book is a shame. It could have been remarkable, but it was evidently put together by someone who has very little knowledge or experience of these miniature artworks. By the way, at one time I had 7500 different ocean liner postcards in my collection, so I think my opinion has considerable validity. I bought this book hoping to show my wife what the best ocean liner postcards were like, what my collection was like when I owned it. I wasted my money. Instead of buying this book, spend you money at a postcard show. If it's a good one, you'll find a number of cards better than any in this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

4-0 out of 5 stars humerous
These postcards are really boring, but they make for a funny collection of airport and shop postcards.

5-0 out of 5 stars a really rather special little book
Boring Postcards, collected and edited by Magnum photographer Martin Parr, composed 160 of the dullest British postcards from the fifties, sixties and seventies, touched a national nerve at the same time as it confirmed many foreigners' preconceptions of the British. As the Sunday Times critic discussed at the time: individually they were a kitsch hoot, but collectively they referred to the spirit and soul of a Britain vanished for ever.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buildings in the mail.
This wonderful book, beautifully designed and printed, has 625 postcards of American buildings selected from six thousand in the author's collection. He chose these for their relevance and graphic rendering. Most of them probably originated from the Curt Teich company based in Chicago (they printed 360,000 different cards over the years).Van Malderen writes a short informative introduction about his collection and the architectural postcard. The majority show multi-storied buildings, especially skyscrapers but there are plenty of factories, docks, bridges, churches, street scenes and more. The buildings were photographed and then drawn (some artist drew the short straw and had to put all the windows in) to bring out the best of the structure, frequently removing nearby buildings so the original was left in all its glory. 3-0 out of 5 stars Some captivating photos
Although this book does have some interesting information about the art of photography, I was disappointed that the photography itself seemed to be the focus of the book and not the dogs. There are some captivating photos included in the book which any dog lover would enjoy, but I would have preferred that the author had not included the captions below each photo as I felt that they only distracted from the images. Also, many of the photographs appeared to be reduced in size. If you want a wonderful book of studio photographs of dogs check out the book "Prince and Other Dogs 1850-1940" by Libby Hall.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Praise of The Dog Album
In this era of specialization, it is most refreshing to be exposed to a book which stimulates interest in multiple, seemingly unrelated subjects.Such a book is The Dog Album, authored by Gary E. Eichhorn and Scott B.Jones. First of all, the book presents a brief but fascinating, especiallyfor the novice, overview of the history of photography. It also providessome interesting background pertaining to the development of modern caninebreeds. But most of all, it reflects a profound, sincere love of dogs, anda illuminating historical manifestation of the relationship of dogs andtheir owners.Certainly, these latter two qualities give The Dog Album itslasting value. I believe the astute and sensitive reader will be drawn tothis book looking both forwards and backwards.Backwards, as one cannothelp but relate to the mutual love and respect between owner and dogreflected in these wonderful photos. And forwards, as we are better ableto understand our current relationship to a favorite dog in an historicalcontext. In conclusion, The Dog Album is not a book one buys, reads asingle time, and places on the shelf to gather dust.It is a book one willreturn to over and over again, to help remember past friends (i.e., dogs)and to more fully appreciate current friends (i.e., dogs). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A superb souvenir book for Maine vacationers
A Century Apart: Maine Then & Now is a gorgeous visual and historic tour of Maine's landscapes and cities. Author Cindy McIntyre was an avid collector of Maine postcards; inspired by the vintage photographs, she sought to compare snapshots of present-day Maine with images past, revealing striking differences and similarities. The text recounts changes in the last hundred years in various Maine towns, while the full-color paintings and photographs often display striking contrasts when placed side by side. A superb souvenir book for Maine vacationers, and a trip down memory lane for longtime Maine residents. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice book for the beginner, but not complete
Allmen's book is a nice reference, but not an absolute essential. It has some valuable information in the beginning, such as how to determine the age of a card and so on, but her examples aren't as plentiful as one wouldwish. As well, her prices aren't current, and having been published in1990, cannot possibly reflect the kind of resurgance in interest inpostcards that places like Ebay and Amazon auctions are generating. But ifyou're a dealer or a serious collector it's a nice book to add to yourshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for beginning postcard collectors.
This book starts with short easy chapters on the topics of most interest to beginning collectors: history of postcards, how to gauge age, condition, buying and selling, terms and abbreviations. Contains a comprehensive list of postcard publishers, a good glossary, but less than adequate index. One particularly good chapter runs through 5 postcards from the same artist that range in value from $1 to $150 in order to give a sense of what is valuable. This type of comparison would be of great value in any collectables/antique book and I wish there were more examples in this book. The novice can quickly get up to speed on the basics, then browse the extensive price listings both to estimate the value of their own collections, or to see if the local antique store is overpriced (it is!).The price list contains several thousand categories. Contains many b&w photos. The color insert would've been better if it showed a greater variety of postcard types rather than emphasizing a specific topic: European Art Novaeu.I highly recommend this book to beginners. Advanced collectors will probably already know the basic information, including the monetary value of their own topical interests. However, the extensive price list makes a good shelf or shopping reference even for advanced collectors. ... Read more
