Now showing - Bijou art - In color!
Another reasonably priced addition to the slowly expanding library of movie poster books.Because it is based on the TCM archives it is very generalised and basically covers movies of the thirties, forties and fifties.The chapters are dictated by what is available in the archive so there is no collection of comedy classics, 'Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House', for instance and other light-hearted titles are included in the chapter called Battle of the sexes.
WONDERFUL BOOK BUT WHERE IS UNIVERSAL?
The "Picture Show" is a vibrant and eclectic collection of movie posters culled from Turner Classic Movie's library of over 3500 vintage films.The book is an over-sized, soft cover reprinting hundreds of movie posters.Lesser known films may appear two or three to a page while greater classics are reprinted in full page glory.The book begins with a short history of movie posters and the explanation of "One-sheets" "Half-Sheets", "Three Sheets" etc...before breaking down the posters into several different chapters.

"What would Hollywood be without desire and greed?"
As a noir fan, I'm ready to read anything from Eddie Muller. He's so obviously an expert on the subject--but more than that he's also an aficionado, and it shows in "The Art of Noir: The Posters and Graphics From the Classic Era of Film Noir." In the introduction, Muller notes that film noir posters have become a hot commodity for collectors recently, and that every poster "flaunts luscious spoils; at the same time warning of the dangers awaiting anyone who tried to possess them." With art this grand, maybe communism wasn't such a bad idea
If you're a graphic designer, you only need browse this excellent book for a moment or two to realize that Russian artists in the 1920's and 30's knew more about how to make a great poster than any American has ever known before or since.
Fun and informative
I'm not a collector of Russian/Soviet film posters, so all the liner notes could be complete bullocks, but the book is brilliantly large and appears to really want to give the straight story (for instance it gives the title that the artists gave the posters not the movie title associated w/ it). I've only seen a few of the movies it covers so I bought it solely for the art. If you're a fan of the clean Bauhaus style this book is for you.

A superlative survey of pre-Communist Russian graphics.
Susan Pack's overview of theRussian avant-garde film poster, is a visual delight, and a welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in graphic design. This book is a handsome collection of pre-Communist posters from such notable graphic artists as the Stenberg brothers, and Alexander Rodchenko, as well as many other lesser known, yet talented artisans. Anyone familiar with Russian graphics of this period are in for a treat, and those seeing them for the first time will soon become addicted to their graphic impact, and innovative type treatments. Excellent with over 150 Colorful Poster Pics.......
This beautifully designed small coffee table paperback is the perfect guide thru US WW2 patriotic industrial and gov't posters. Yes, sometimes one may have felt "Big Brother" is watching, since these artistic posters decorated the walls of factories, building sides, and seemingly near everywhere during the war years. The message invariably was "Be A Nurse", "Help the Troops", "Contribute to the effort", and most important "Don'T SHIRK ON THE JOB..MAKE EVERY MOMENT COUNT FOR THE BOYS OVERSEAS!" Of course similar posters were designed and displayed by all combatants, and their messages were all near identical. The postwar industrial posters are also noted, and they were definitely childish at worst, compared with the noble and heroic aspirations sought in the best of the War Posters!

Delving Beneath the Surface of WWII Posters
"Are you doing all that you can?" A graphically interesting work not bogged down in history.
Anyone intersted in the graphic stylism, the stark imagery, the sometimes disturbing and sometimes hilarious generalizations made in American Propaganda during World War Two should check out this book.It containsmany posters that I've not seen in print before, but unfortunately leavesmany others out. From an academic, historical perspective the documentationand historical explanations for the U.S. propaganda machine are too brief.Still, the poster reproductions are fantastic, mostly in color.I wouldalso reccomend Anthony Rhodes "Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion"for a look at other countries' propaganda from the same time period. ... the poster art is a nice blend of american and foreign and nicely captures the evolution of the medium, but the accompanying text is seriously worthless, consisting of synopses for each film written in the worst middle-school syntax and replete with glaring typographical errors.it would have been nice to read some informative blurbs about the poster art itself, and about how hitchcock, a master or self-publicity, advertised his pictures more broadly.the cover shot on the book is from the buzz-generating psycho campaign, yet the text accompanying the psycho posters mentions nothing of the policy of excluding tardy movie-goers from the picture so as to maximize the experience.the interested reader may find a broader collection of images online, although without the crisp clarity of the photographs in this book.three stars primarily because of the disappointing text.

A very colourful, neato kind of book
I enjoyed looking at this book - I got it from the library. It's got many posters and lobby cards from Hitchcock's works, all in colour. And it's not just the same ones you see everywhere. This book is a must for any Elvis fan. Just read the foreward by actress Yvonne Craig who co-starred in two of Elvis' movies. This book talks about his movie career like no other book has done.The information is fun and educational.The book is illustrated with magnificent, unique international posters.When reading the book, it is as enjoyable as your favorite childhood storybook because the illustrations describe what has been written. A trip down memory lane
When I first looked at this book, it was like going back to my childhood, well, sort of, it was so neat to see posters of some of my favorite films from back then and a lot from movies that I never knew they made. The artwork on those posters is most certainly something to see and admire!!! If you love art and or movies this is THE book to get you won't be disappointed!

An American Collection
This is a VERY small book, smaller than a cd case. The illustrations are great and it gives a very general overview of Mucha's life. I purchased this book as a reference for a report on Mucha for a college level class and it was definitely not very useful for that purpose.The author does not cite any resources for the information in the book and other than looking good on the bookshelf it was not worth the price.

Part of a Really Useful Series
I run enrichment programs for school age children and this book along withthe other books in the Vignette series from the Collector's Press have beenterrific in introducing kids to great artists.This book does a great jobof chronicling Mucha's life and career.I highly recommend it as anintroduction to Art Nouveau and Alphonse Mucha.

A highly recommended visual treat
Color reproductions from science fiction posters pack a gorgeous presentation which focuses as much on the background history and talents of the artists themselves as on the works. Tony Nourmand is co-owner of a poster gallery in London and a poster consultant for Christie's; Graham Marsh is a designer and art director: their joint efforts here pack genre history with full-page poster reproductions in living color. So Good You Can Hang the Book on the Wall
Like the other decade books in this series Film Posters of the 50's is a sensational buy.You could either keep it intact as a collection of posters in a book to show and discuss with friends, or cut the book up and actually have a vast number of posters up on your wall.This book is about a third the size of your standard film poster and most movies are full page colour.Any of them would look great up on the wall.Don't know what the previous reviewer is complaining about, must have confused this book with a similar title or something because this ain't like he describes. If I were only measuring this book by the 250+ images of movie posters in it, I would say it deserved more than five stars.Unfortunately, the layout has two flaws.Many of the images are reproduced in unnecessarily too small sizes.Some of the two page spreads have the key point of interest right in the middle of the crease.The book also would benefit from a much more thorough discussion of the techniques used in the posters.Read more
