5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The pin-ups of days gone-by, still retain their classy beauty, their timeless appeal. Any lover of pin-up art, any lover of the girl-next door female form, any lover of classy and beautiful art of the ladies, ought to seriously consider adding this book to their collection. A+

4-0 out of 5 stars worth getting !!! I just wish it were bigger
Like VARGAS Vignettes 1 and 2, I wish this was bigger. The book is small and that is the only reason it didn't get the full 5 stars. Although Vargas is my favorite artist, MacPherson is right up there too, and this book shows a lot of examples of his WWII era art. A lot of these pin-ups also appeared on the WWII bombers. There are about 30 works represented and they are all beautiful.5-0 out of 5 stars Another major book by Pin Up Art Specialist Max Allan Collin
Award winning Author Max Allan Collins is also one of the foremost collectors of original pin up art in the country. He combines his love of this media with the detailed research evident in his awardwinning NateHeller and Eliot Ness historical novels to produce yet another outstandingpin up book similar to his award winning collaboration with artist GilElvgren's son Drake last year. Max comes to this project with the benefitalso of having known Earl MacPherson in his final years of life. On top ofall of this you get the high production quality known to most collector'spress books. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooooo Ha!!!!!!!!!!!
What a book! All the poster/lobby card compilations by Hershenson and Allen are great, particularly Volume 10, Serial Movie Posters, which I suspect is their best seller to date, soon to be topped by this one.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding film poster book
This volume from the series of books from Bruce is fantastic. The beatifull artistic designs of the posters contained in this volume are true classic examples of the fond memories I have from my youth when drive-ins were at the peak of popularity. Although the films were Ed Wood grade z type shlock fare the posters promoting them were class a in artistic design. The general rule of thumbs used by us frequenting the weekly drive-ins was the more outragius off the wall display on those posters(usualy a scanty cladd female and verball quotation to entice the movie going individuals) the most likely the film is a real turkey. Many of us loved making the weekly treck to the driv-ins just to see if the latest presentation could topple the king Plan 9 From Outer Space in realy bad filmmaking. The color posters contained in this volume all are examples of classic poster designing that sadly is lacking in "bland" fare that has been created for film posters from the late 80's to the present day.I highly recomend this gem of a book to any lover of film posters, the price for it is "dirt cheap pocket change" considering the outstanding content it has.A truely unique one of a kind book that I long have searched for and untill now, was never available. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Yee-aah!
Excellent book for the western enthusiast. was a little disappointed that posters were not full page but guess I'm being a bit picky. No text apart from the introduction, many memories came flooding back of favourites such as Charles Starrett, Allan Lane, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Colorful West
More Cowboy Movie Posters is a fabulous art book and truly invaluable, offering the highest quality images from good and bad westerns. As someone who collects western posters, I have used this book as an important aid to purchasing posters illustrated within. Without such a quality reference I would have needed to peruse a stack of catalogs to find the same amount of images. For the non collector movie buff, the book is equally a delight and tremendous value at the low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, Extraordinary Detail On Every Level!
This review can easily apply to any of the books in the Bruce Hershenson edited series of film posterhistory. Hershenson rightly treats film graphics not just as pop culture artifacts but trueworks of art.His books are filled with a curator'seye for superior choice and reproduction, each poster in striking color and with a clarity of printing that rivals most any coffeetable art book. Somewhere betweenadvertising andillustration, film posters, like book jackets and record covers, inhabitthat imaginativeand atmospheric zone where one artreflects another. It's not just the history of film or the history of film design, it's a history of twentieth century Saturdayafternoons and Saturday nights. How oftenwe would gointo the dark theatre armed only with the ideas and ideals of the postersoutside, andthen return to them afterward, perhapswith nodding affirmation or smirking disillusionment, but still a vision of what could be. This series of books should besubtitiled: THE FINE ART OFANTICIPATION,for no matterif expectation was filled or emptied by the films behind them, their posters kept on shining. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done
This is a great book for fans of Bill Ward's pin-up art and features numerous full-page illustrationsof his distinctive beauties. Most of the pin-ups are black and white Conte crayon drawings done on a beige colored paper. There are a few color pin-ups shown as well. The beginning of the book contains a concise biography of Ward along with samples of his comic-book art. There are several nice romance covers shown here. The book is printed on quality paper and the pin-ups shown at a nice size. This is an A+ effort. The only thing you could have asked for is more art, but at around 100 pin-ups this is a great tribute to Bill Ward.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Conte crayon king
I don't think Bill Ward sits easily with what are generally considered pin-up artists like Elvgren, Petty, Vargas and the few dozen others who created the genre over the last seventy years but his huge output from 1950 to 1975 (which is the basis of this handsome book) means his work has to be considered.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful classic posters in a SUPER format!
If you buy one book on Japanese cinema this year, this is it.They have done a terrific job of laying out the history of Japanese film in poster format, in correct color no less, with5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Wacky Posters -- Nothing Like It!!
I discovered this new book put out by Tokyo-based DH Publishing by accident. And am glad I did. Chock full of full-page full-color posters of the most wonderfully wackiest of Japan's classic movie posters. There's everything from Horror and Monster to Samurai and Ninja, Pink (what they call soft porn) to Anime, and even some new posters thrown in. My best is easily the Sci-Fi genre, which includes the ultimate Ultraman. Also, you gotta check out some of the Monster posters, like Godzilla and some huge Ice Man creature. I bought two of these, as I knew it would make that perfect present when you've run out of ideas what to buy someone. DH Publishing arigato! I'm going to check out their other books. I hope they're as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable slice of Japanese popular culture
Japanese Movie Posters: Yakuza, Monster, Pink And Horror is an eye-opening, full-color presentation of movie posters representational of the best and the worst of Japan's cinema. From lurid and graphic horror to yakuza movies to posters of Hayao Miyazaki's wondrous words of animation, Japanese Movie Posters offers an unforgettable slice of Japanese popular culture in the twentieth century. Brief yet erudite and scholarly commentaries by Chuck Stephens (contributing editor to "Film Comment", a columnist for "Kinema Junpo, and a freelance specialist in Asian cinema for publications worldwide), Tetsuya Masuda (vintage poster expert and head of the cinema section of wonder antiquarian books), and Kairakutei Black (a Japanese film critic and traditional "rakugo" comic storyteller) offer informed and informative insights into the psychology and media background of the individual posters round out this impressive collection. A unique compendium of cinematic poster art, Japanese Movie Posters is a welcome and highly recommended addition to any personal or academic Cinematic Studies reference collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Every last shot....
Every last shot heard in the world of motion pictures is displayed here. From Pre-code films like LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT to the Code-in-your-face PULP FICTION, Bruce Hershenson captures the poster art of these films in splashy high quality color.A bonus is that Bruce always includes lobby card art, cherished by many a collector, but not displayed often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crime Movie Posters
Absolutely stunning! Superb graphics of some of our favorite movie posters! Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's to Crime
How can crime be bad and yet so good! Look inside the cover of these pages for the answer. Not much reading required but plenty of illustrations. And what illustrations!! Cigarettes, dangling from shadowey faces, killer guns begging for victums, and behind every crime there's a "good" women to lead him on to both heaven or hell. These images can usually sum up the classic Crime Movie Poster. In cronological order the images take us from the birth of this gendre to it's present. This is no small feat, as the first poster is dated 1913! That's how many years? Page after page is loaded with poster art that grabs the eye and makes you want to view the film. Vivid coloring shows the excellent printing quality of this volume. One only needs to turn the pages to discover "the stuff dreams are made of". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hold a piece of Disney history on your bookshelf
This book features some of the rarest and oldest posters from the collection of Tony Anselmo. It's so nice that such a great and rare collection can be shared with everyone.Disney fans will love this. The posters are gorgeous, and this book is something you can keep for years and enjoy the history and artwork it holds.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for Disney fans
This large book is a visual treat and features mostly rare vintage movie posters from both classic animated Disney shorts and classic animated Disney features. The book complements the similar Disney Poster Book published under the Hyperion label in the early '90's. This publication is quality-bound (with pages sewn, not glued, into the binding) and the graphics reproduction is generally excellent. It's truly amazing how much artistry went into many of these posters.A delight even for casualenthusiasts and a definite "must" for hardcore Disney aficionados!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential book for Disneyphile
This book is a superb supplement to the earlier Disney Poster Book from Hyperion (1993). These early posters certainly reflect the emphasis on quality by the original Walt Disney Studios. It's sad that movie posters are not what they used to be. It's even sadder that this tome shows (in miniature) a theater poster from the "Martins & Coys" segment of "Make Mine Music", yet today's Disney Company has decided to censor (i.e., "cut-out") this wonderful, creative segment in its recent DVD release, thus cheating its many fans Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars charming
As any Brothers Hildebrandt fan knows, Greg and Tim's first Tolkein calender went on to become a worldwide bestseller. Some of the art, such as Unexpected Party or Gandalf with the Balrog was simply brilliant. Some of it looks dated today such as the hideous 1976 granny dress that Galadriel wears or the Sgt. Pepper mustache on Aragorn and the silly looking Fell beasts ridden by Nazgul who look like they're about to fall off at any minute. Oh well. Nobody got out of the 70s without some style howlers. Laugh at the funny stuff and be awed by the great.4-0 out of 5 stars Some great art, some not so great
I loved the Hildebrandts' art as a kid, and I appreciate being able to revisit it in this handsome volume.Engaging scenes, fabulous detail, vivid colors, and some of the best Tolkien paintings ever (the Ring of Galadriel, Old Man Willow, the Pillars of the Kings, Saruman and the Palantir).Their influence can be seen in many subsequent interpretations of Tolkien (compare the Hildebrandts' "Eowyn and the [left-handed] Nazgul" with the same scene in the 2004 Ted Nasmith calendar) and in much "generic" fantasy art.5-0 out of 5 stars Journey through middle earth like you've never done before!
I hadn't actually heard of the Hildebrandt brothers, but got this book for the simple fact that it bore the name of Tolkien.I opened it up and there it was, scenes I pictured in my head were now right in front of me,in richly painted acrylic colors, with moods of sadness, fear, peace, and courage.I recommend this book and give it five stars!Get it come on you know you want to.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tolkien's art
In the world of Tolkien artwork, two artists sit at the top of the heap: Alan Lee and John Howe. These two artists have devoted a lot of ink to sketching scenes from J.R.R. Tolkien's masterworks, and in the "Lord of the Rings Poster Collection 2," we get to see some of Lee's best work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chris from California
This collection features six works of Alan Lee who, along with John Howe, was one of the principle conceptual artists for Peter Jackson's films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings".
