5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Movies of the Decade
Take a gathering of classic movie posters from the Reel Poster Gallery collection, narrow the focus to film posters of the 1930s for maximum exposure, and cover films which helped alleviate the miseries of the Great Depression, then packaging it in an oversized paperback and you have Film Posters of the 1930s: The Essential Movies of the Decade, a work of art in and of itself. Over a hundred pages provide full-color reproductions of said posters, creating a book which excels in attractive presentation and reproductive quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly written, sumptuous presentation
...This is a groundbreaking book, the first (and only one since!) that truly unearths the story of how movie posters were created, who drew them, why each studio had a certain 'look' to their posters and what impact they had on the popular culture. The text is wise, witty, thoroughly enjoyable while it imparts vast amounts of fresh and fascinating information. And as for the images, they are magnificently chosen and reproduced, each one of them accompanied by intriguing and smart observations on the films themselves, their making and their role in Hollywood history. This is an ambitious undertaking, yet it's an ideal book to get lost in during a lazy weekend.Hard to put down, beautifully done and crying out for a sequel.A classic!

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
Reel Art is like looking at a carpet sampling booklet. The paperback edition that is. Apart from a few none specific notes given a the front of the booklet the information on offer is very limited. Page after page of vintage posters with no text to accompany them makes this flick book an annoying "read". If all you require is visual this is an excellent choice. However, if you thought this book would actually tell you anything about the posters published, think again.5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular book well worth having
This is a must have book, even if you aren't "into movies". It is a sheer visual delight and a worthy addition to any library. Those with an interest in the graphic arts should definately acquire it. Arranged in athoughtful manner, the glorious artwork is accompanied by intelligent textthat is never dry and always informative. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book that dwells on too few subjects.
As previous reviewers stated, this is a marvelous book, & it does have far too many Disney & Popeye posters in it. Considering the wealth of other 'vintage' cartoon posters that are around (even just searching on the net), Im suprised they didnt have a better selection for us to look at. Otherwise, Im very happy to have this book, and I'd LOVE to see a volume 2 some day!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars CARTOON MOVIE POSTERS: Serious Collecting Meets the Fun Zone
I'll be truthful: I received Bruce Hershenson's CARTOON MOVIE POSTERS as part of a "grab-bag" special he was throwing a couple of years back. My tastes lie in the somewhat more arcane area of Horror &Science Fiction posters. What would a guy like me who covets copies ofposters like BEAST WITH 1,000,000 EYES want with...harmless, namby-pambykid's stuff?Plenty, as I soon discovered once I opened this excellentbook. First-the reason I had been so unaware of cartoon posters, especiallyones from the seven minute variety, is that so many of them are practicallyextinct. Cartoons, being the VERY bottom of the bill, were treated as4th-class citizens, and if the studios bothered to make a poster at all, there weren't very many of them and the vast majority of those were tossed. What a shame! This book, which contains close to 400 exqusitely printedimages, is an absolute riot of color and imagination that easily rivals anyof my beloved fantasy pieces. Starting from cartoon pioneer Windsor McCayin 1911 and ending with the X-rated FRITZ THE CAT in 1972,(and touching onall points in between),Bruce includes examples ranging from the obvious(Disney, Warner Bros, & Fleischer) to the wonderfully obscure (thereare several pages of pictures from Ub Iwerks'fairy tale cartoons from the30s that are gorgeous, more than a little strange, and as rare as hen'steeth.)If you have even a passing interest in movie posters, it ismandatory that you order at least a couple of Hershenson's poster volumes. If you are a rabid, hopeless poster fiend like myself, they are invaluablefor both reference and entertainment. Everything about them is first-rate:the printing, the choice of posters (ah, those 30s & 40s Disney1-sheets...!)the short, inobtrusive, well-written snippets regarding thehistory of various posters: it's very tough to find fault here. This is theperfect gift for hard-core poster geeks and casual film/cartoon aficonadosalike. Five stars all the way, and...abbah-dee, abbah-dee,abbah-dee....That's All, Folks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book on every level!
Everyone has their own favorite film genre (animation, action and adventure, science fiction, etc.).Next to crime/film noir films, animation is mine. The beautiful thing about this book is the unexpected. Rather than delve into the standard Disney fare (which is included in greatdetail nevertheless), this book includes artwork from posters from"lesser seen or only mildly popular" titles.Besides Disney, everything from Fleischer to Avery is represented, works of art that canonly be bought for thousands of dollars today at many of America's highechelon auction houses. If you are the least bit interested in thejaw-dropping beauty of what has become a lost art -- the exercise ofdrawing images associated with the advertising of a Hollywood film -- thisis the book to have. This book is part of movie poster maven BruceHershenson's exhaustive multi-volume series of books highlighting thehistory and beauty of what much of mainstream America has only in the lastten years begun to recognize. And that is movie posters are a "popularart" form that can stand proudly next to all other styles of art fromgothic to modern, from expressionist to impressionist. Great film artborrows from all of these styles and this volume, which focuses only onposters associated with animated films, illustrates innumerable exampleswhereby despite the restrictive nature of the genre (cartoons), not allposters went in the same direction in terms of style and presentation. From Pinocchio to Popeye, Hershenson and Allen have built an incrediblearchive (and legacy) of images in all of his books, capturing a period(when all posters were drawn by hand and then printed, as opposed totoday's method of using photographic stock and manipulating them digitallyand printing them by the thousands) that would otherwise be lost forever. Afine book for any collector (get the hardcover edition if you can, it'sharder to find; if Amazon doesn't have it, it's available from Mr.Hershenson directly at mail@brucehershenson.com). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Of Tolkien's world
In the world of Tolkien artwork, two artists sit at the top of the heap: Alan Lee and John Howe. These two artists have devoted a lot of ink to sketching scenes from J.R.R. Tolkien's masterworks, and in the "Lord of the Rings Poster Collection," we get to see some of Lee's best work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chris from California
This collection features six works of Alan Lee who, along with John Howe, was one of the principle conceptual artists for Peter Jackson's films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings".
5-0 out of 5 stars Lush, sharp, and just as you imagined the Gates of Moria
Having never owned any of Alan Lee's LOTR artwork before, I bought this collection on the advice I had found in many places online.Needless to say, I was not disappointed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a whole new way to love movies
I have been so impressed with Hershenson's series of books on classic movie posters that I have purchased them all. I hope he keeps it up. These are beautifully produced allowing me to really understand how a movie was promoted when first released. The best posters have always been works ofart but as they have become collectibles it has become expensive for mostof us to own older posters. These books certainly make it possible toappreciate the beauty of the design and graphics. My guests are really impressed too. I leave a few ofthe books out and they always are the center of conversation as people bothfind their favorite films and discover somethings they never knew existed.I hope these books keep coming for a long time. Thanks for selling them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, Extraordinary Detail On Every Level!
This review can easily apply to any of the books in the Bruce Hershenson edited series of film posterhistory. Hershenson rightly treats film graphics not just as pop culture artifacts but trueworks of art.His books are filled with a curator'seye for superior choice and reproduction, each poster in striking color and with a clarity of printing that rivals most any coffeetable art book. Somewhere betweenadvertising andillustration, film posters, like book jackets and record covers, inhabitthat imaginativeand atmospheric zone where one artreflects another. It's not just the history of film or the history of film design, it's a history of twentieth century Saturdayafternoons and Saturday nights. How oftenwe would gointo the dark theatre armed only with the ideas and ideals of the postersoutside, andthen return to them afterward, perhapswith nodding affirmation or smirking disillusionment, but still a vision of what could be. This series of books should besubtitiled: THE FINE ART OFANTICIPATION, for nomatter if expectation was filled or emptied by the films behind them, their posters kept on shining. ... Read more
