5-0 out of 5 stars Collecting Lladro: Identfication and price guide
As a Lladro collector of more than 25 years I found this book to be most informative.Even though I have read much about Lladro there were topics covered that were new to me.A new addition would be most welcome.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read for Lladro enthusiast
Good book to read about Lladro porcelains but it's pretty outdated and doesn't contain samples of the newer Lladro pieces. But then again, Lladro related books are so rare, this itself is a jewel. Majority of the pictures shown here are the 'official' photographs of piece by Lladro themselves. It would have been great to see pictures taken by the author or owner as it would give a different angle and view of the pieces. I'm an avid collector and was thrilled to see many of the older pieces and read a short history about them in this book.Perhaps the author would consider to publish a newer edition?? And also source out Lladro examples from a more varied selection of collectors. A view of how they are stored in display cabinets at individual homes would be great too, to give a more personal and homely touch to the pieces. This is a great book and I'm sure it took a lot of effort to come out with it.... I would recommend it to anyone and hope that new editions will be published in the near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Resource!
For anyone who is interested in learning more about Lladr, the company, the history, the incredible artistry, "relatives" such as NAO and Zaphir, collecting and becoming better at collecting, and how to care for your collection, this book is fantastic and I highly recommend it!Peggy Whiteneck is truly an expert in this field, and has a passion for collecting Lladr that shows in every page. This second edition includes updates and new information as well as even more photos.Lladr collectors will not want to miss this! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Warman's Roseville Pottery
I am not happy with my recent purchase of Warman's Roseville book.It does not provide a complete listing of suggested prices and many of the pictured pieces are described with damage along with a price. For example, hanging basket with "chip on handle."For a serious collector the book is not of much use and for the inexperienced collector the book is misleading--damaged pieces do not sell for anything close to what mint pieces sell for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Collector's Guide
Great book for a quick overview on Roseville pottery, the different patterns and price ranges. Not a complete book but a good quick reference for those just starting to collect.

4-0 out of 5 stars buy this for the beautiful color photos!
Though by no means a complete showing of every shape made for each design, it IS a very generous sampling of each design, with beautiful studio photographs cover to cover. That makes it a must-have for any Roseville lover-none of the ugly black and white catalogue page reprints. NOT so great for pricing information. The pieces are priced with their existing blemishes, which would make a perfect piece of the same design worth ?? how much ?? Also has price listed for the whole set, if the photo includes more than one piece. That is just not helpful when you want to put a value on one piece.Read more

This book is a wast of time. There are marks with no explanations and explanations with no marks. The book skips sequences almost like there are pages missing.Trying to use this book in dating a piece is hopeless.3-0 out of 5 stars 1100 Marks on foreign pottery & porcelain
Very good if your looking for very old marks

3-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for older markings
This book has a terrific layout. The right page has 50 or more markings while the left page lists easily referenced details.Unfortunately, the details can be sketchy. For example, (one listing) Paris, some factory,Charles Phillipe or (another listing) Sceaux? or Bourg la Reine?Doubtful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the layout
He went through a lot of trouble to get actual color pictures of the pottery and porcelain along with the marks.I have a lot of books on marks but I always consult this book first because it will show the type of pottery made by a potter along with the marks.I really like it and wish he would do a second edition. It does not include histories or other detail of the potters.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of those "keystone" books for your library.
If you need a history of each pottery manufacturer, this book is not for you.The author cuts right to the chase and gives us what we need -- an authoritative directory of makers' marks. He provides a photograph of the mark and right next to it an illustration of a typical product of the factory.Although in some cases experts might quibble about what is "typical" the result is an incredible cumulative reference source.Dating has been derived from Kovel, Lehner and other reputable sources. The marks are arranged alphabetically, which is about as user-friendly as this sort of tool gets.Add to this good indices, and we have a reference tool that no museum, collector or dealer should be ashamed to own. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless as a price guide
I picked this book up shortly after it first came out but was ultimately disappointed with it.Yeah, there were illustrations of some pretty pieces, but the values listed didn't seem to have much relation to the real prices Rookwood was being sold for at the time. One normally expects a certain amount of inaccuracy in a price guide when compared to actual market values. But the differences here were just so large that the book was useless. The pictures were nice, but you can find other books on Rookwood with more substance and equally nice pictures.Take a pass on this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared to search alot and have faith in the prices
This book is not organized, except loosely by types.Pieces are organized poorly or not at all by shapes, not year or number. The authors are not named and their bases for prices are unstated. Its best quality is thequantity of photos.Someone should now take this "first draft"and make it into a book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
After doing much searching and researching, I've found that this book, along with F. Olsen's "Kilns", is an excellent resouce for those of us who have spent much time working with kilns from a pedestrian level, but little time investigating the construction of them.Jack Troy'swriting is clear and enjoyable and his knowledge obviously exhaustive.Thefirst place to go if you are considering the merits of woodfired work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for potters...
"Wood-Fired Stoneware & Porcelain" is a great resource for potters interested in this alternative style of firing. The book contains substantial information on kiln design, clays, glazes, stacking, and firing wood kilns. Troy adds in details from his own considerable experience, and the photos and illustrations will make you anxious to get to the studio (or your local brick supplier...) The only drawback is that the majority of the photos are in b&w; however, the color plates that are included are great. A nice historical section, and lots of work by and info on contemporary potters. Most likely a good book to have on the shelf, and a great companion to his book on Salt-Glaze.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction to wood firing and out door kilns
Jack Troy is a very good and entusiastic writer. This new book is very much worth it's price and if you can get your hands at the old one, Salt Glazed Ceramics, that is a trofee. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Organized and good!
I have been seriously collecting only a few months now and have decided to sell. This book is well organized and the best of 3 reference books on flow blue that I have. The hard cover is a good idea since I think I would wear it down to stubs if it had been a paperback!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource
If you collect, are interested in collecting, or want to identify and value flow blue items, this book is a must. You can look up items by pattern, which are cross-referenced to the manufacturers' names. The book is full of color photographs of makers' marks as well as examples of hundreds of patterns on various types of pieces. The back of the book contains values for the photographed pieces.Another helpful feature is the section on reproductions. This is a great reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must
A must have book for any true Mccoy collector. A lot of true Mccoy out there that is not marked Mccoy and the opposite which is not the real Mccoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
While the book has beautiful photos, it is hard to use as a reference. Unless you know what the piece is exactly it is very difficult to locate in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Too-Cheap for the Money You Save
The authors are fitting and devoted source whose familiarity and love about McCoy Pottery shine through. Every collector of McCoy Pottery should and MUST have this book. This book is aimed at all levels of collectors. It has the wealth of information needed to help beginners make sense of things that may initially seem confusing. With its color photographs, lists prices, and careful organization this book will be of use to collectors and buyers in need of a general pricing guide. In light of the fact that there are so few books on McCoy Pottery I am grateful to the authors for their effort and dedication. Thank you! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kovels' Dictionary of Marks -- Pottery And Porcelain : 1650 to 1850 (Kovel's Dictionary of Marks)
Overall it is helpful. I am really just getting into this, so it is great to have something I can refer to to get an idea of where the item I have comes from.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good resource for the collector
As with the Kovels other books, this reference is very exhaustive and complete. There are, perhaps, some mistakes, but given the volume of information here that is to be expected. I find I reach for this book first when I'm trying to identify a piece of this age group, and usually findwhat I'm looking for here. Easy to travel with, from antique shop toauction. A good buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes
Rather coplete book but-alas-full of mistakes in entries concerning German and Austrian porcelain.Take for example the Meissen porcelain:the authors put together in one large pile Meissen proper,Thiemefactory,Fr.Hirsch,Helena Wolfsohn and other factories, though these areabsolutely different things. The authors should make a bit of researchbefore starting the project:What amazes me is that this is the 46th editionof the book and nobody ever corrected those mistakes. ...
