4-0 out of 5 stars Superb cloisonne photographs, excellent signature photos
A beautiful and somewhat varied collection, with excellent background information. If the exhibit had greater variety, and a little less focus on Ando in favor of other artists who are not represented, it would provide the perfect reference as it almost does. It would also be nice to see some representation of recent common products to aid in differential identification with Meiji, Taisho and Showa period wares. A must buy for the Japanese cloisonne afficionado nonetheless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very informative book.
This book is jam packed with pottery marks, a great value for the price.I had no idea that there were so many. It is extremely informative, giving a brief history, manufacture dates and much more information for each company listed. I would definately recommend this to anyone with an interest in collecting or selling pottery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extensive?BUT Not Easy to Use!
This book has a LOT of information! When you do find what you are trying to research there is extensive information about the company. HOWEVER, the book is not indexed well. The index is down right skimpy. When trying to look-up certain words or wording found in a mark there is no reference to these things in the index. So a tedious process of looking through each page many times insues.5-0 out of 5 stars And So It Was Done
Years ago I hunted high and low for a book on American ceramic wares, agenre who's time I saw closing fast. It was suggested once that I writeone. I am glad I didn't take the challenge as my work would surly havepaled severely in contrast to this marvelous, all inclusive work.LoisLehner gives the subject the depth, scope and respect it deserves. This is'the book' on American marks on pottery and porcelain its authority isnever questioned. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Wright collectors, if you don't have a previous edition
We've been collecting RW since 1998, and have hundreds of hard to find and many one of a kind pieces.
3-0 out of 5 stars Just the pots, please
I just started collecting Russel Wright dishes, and was looking for adefinitive reference guide to help key out the pieces I had. I thought thisbook had a lot of helpful information about determining pattern andmanfacturing locations, but I was a bit disappointed overall. Though thecover of the book features only pottery, the book itself has examples ofall that Russel Wright created in his long, prolific career-- all the waydown to the radios and lamps. It would be great for the diehard RW fan,but I wished it just focussed on the pottery.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for any beginning Wright collector
I am so happy to have gotten this book.I knew little-to-nothing about Wright, and Ann Kerr's book lays out all kinds of information about the man, the artist, and his art.I haven't had much of a problem without an index,as she has all the information chaptered out, and it is all easy to access. The accompanying photos are excellent and there are many. She alsoexplains any areas which may be ambiguous, such as color, size and shapeanomalies. Due to getting this book, I often know more about the pieces Ifind than the dealers do, as she tries to fit in every piece of informationthat she has, on every aspect of thecollectible items. I love this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo Adele Kenny and Schiffer Publishing
In words of one syllable, YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK! As the owner of an antiques business and one who sells Staffordshire figures, I endorse this book without reservation. Narrowing the subject to one category of Staffordshire collecting and an in-depth study makes this reference text as unique as Adele Kenny's other books and numerous articles that have been published in widely circulated periodicals like The Antiques News, Antiques & Auction News, and Carter's Antiques & Collectables (Australia). This is MUCH more than the usual Stafforshire picture book (although the hundreds of illustrations are marvelous). The presentation is wonderful, the book design and quality are superior, and the content is without equal. Staffordshire Animals is destined to become a standard reference in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Lovers of Staffordshire: YOU NEED THIS BOOK!
This specialized and comprehensive reference book is a must-have forcollectors and dealers! Unlike those large and unwieldy"catalogs" of little more than picture after picture, Kenny hasincluded interesting amd informative text that provides invaluable insightsinto pottery making in Staffordshire as well as a substantial sampling ofillustrations. Suggested values give an accurate sense of current, andrising, market. Kenny's book is well-organized and beautifully presented. Her writing style is intelligent, lively, and very reader-friendly. If youlove Staffordshire figures, you'll love this book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars lots there, but few color pics, some identification guides needed
Lots of example values of pieces. Few have pictures, and even fewer have color pics. The listings are organized by category, but beyond that the details are buried in text and could have been better-separated. (I.e. having date and location of manufacture called out would be helpful.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Guide
The edition is as complete a guide for the mian lines of Hall China as you can probably find, however I think the photo layout and quality were better int he previous version.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book of Hall China's golden years!
The Whitmyers obviously worked for years and simply produced "The Informative Reference" to the wonderful Hall China Company and its long production of products. If you love Hall China, this is the book that you HAVE to have in your library. Packed with facts, photos, information found nowhere else but in this volume. Through the help of dealers, collectors and friends; they were able to show Hall's artistry and employee craftsmanship at its finest.5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny and more

4-0 out of 5 stars Functional Pottery; Form and Aesthetic in Pots of Purpose
I found Functional Pottery to be a pleasant surprise for the most part, although I was mildly disappointed by the more practical sections of the book.Roughly the first half of the book provides an interestinghistorical and cultural review of functional pottery, which went beyondwhat I had anticipated from the title and general description.A portionof the second half of the book focused on the mechanics of particular formsof functional pottery. This portion, which was my particular interest inbuying the book, was a little less thorough and extensive than I had hoped. For the beginner/intermediate potter specifically interested in practicaladvice and detail regarding the mechanics of functional pottery forms, thematerial in the book, while useful, may not go far enough.I recommendthis book as a general overview, keeping in mind that the scope of the bookcovers a broader range of topics than implied by its title, and that onlysixty pages of the book are dedicated to the practical considerations andmechanics of designing and creating functional pottery.

5-0 out of 5 stars For potters concerned about form and function
This book is an excellent addition to my collection of pottery books. This book deals with the more technical side of pottery. This book is for people who have accomplished throwing but want to take it to the nextlevel. The book covers everyhting from history of pottery, to correctproportions, and also has artist bio's.Excellent book, i rate it 12 outof 10. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good examples of molded utilitarian stoneware 1880-1920.
Book illustrates good pictorial examples of molded utilitarian stoneware (pitchers, butter crocks, pie plates, etc.) made between 1880-1920.Artwork, flowers, birds, etc. decorations are usually molded into thesepieces. Most illustrated stoneware is first covered with white glaze andthen with additional diffuse colored glaze usually blue. Some pieces usevarious solid colored glazes.A few illustrated pieces use stamped bluedecoration over white glaze. This book, however, does not really deal withtrue salt glaze, hand decorated pottery prior to 1900.For this reason thetitle could be somewhat misleading to some collectors. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Resource for the Serious Collector
Gregory Schaaf's latest book has turned out to be one of the most valuable and most used in my collection of books on this subject. Not only does he provide a concise and well structured biography on every important potterof the Rio Grande Pueblos, he also provides family trees, some great colorplates and a number of black and white photographs of both the artists andtheir work.Bur Mr. Schaaf goes further than that, and supplies his readerwith all-important pricing info, including the prices some of the pottersfetched for their work at recent auctions.I use this book forresearching; confirming or refuting the extraneous piece of information, and for simple reading pleasure.Sometimes I get the book down just tolook (again!) at the pictures.A great job, and a wonderful companion tohis earlier book of biographies on the Hopi potters.Armed with these twovolumes, any collector of pueblo pottery will find himself making fewermistakes on who to pursue, what to buy and how much to pay for it.Ihighly recommend this book. ...
