Outstanding problem prevention info
A wealth of solid advice on how to prevent (or solve) a wide variety of ceramics problems.Well-written and easy to read.A unique collection of topics, but well-organized, making it easy to find what you're looking for.Includes details about clays and glazes, buying materials, firing, safety, and even business considerations.The title is accurate: you really should know what's in this book, and much of it you won't find elsewhere.

Must have for beginners
I am a self taught potter.This is one of the first books I bought on the subject and I still find it very valuable.It gets to the point and addresses practical problems in clear and specific ways.The glaze recipes that are given work, however it helps to have a bit of knowledge first.(I didn't understand about the thermal expansion of lithium and one of the base glazes give is overloaded with it.It broke my clay body apart completely, not surprising from its chemistry.On the proper clay body it would have been fine.) The solutions to the problems work well.I am using, with good results, a clay body that uses advise from this book.It doesn't have every solution to problems, but I haven't seen any book that does.It is interesting and covers a wide range of important issues for the potter, issues that are often left out of other books.I highly recommend it for anybody who works in clay, specifically those who mix their own clay and glazes.

Frankoma Pottery 2005-2006 Prices
Gary Schaum's book, Frankoma Pottery, Copyright 1997, is a superb achievement. However, the 'new' book purporting to update 2005-2006 prices is a total ripoff. The title page simple reads "Copyright 1997, 4th Printing 2004" The "new" cover, in a different color, includes the words: 2005-2006 Prices.How on earth anyone could publish a new Frankoma 'price guide' in 2004 for 2005-2006 prices, is beyond belief to begin with, but there are almost no changes from the 1997 price guide pages. Either L-W Books, or Gary Schaum, or both is at tremendous fault here. Do NOT buy the 2005-2006 update. You are wasting your money.

A great reference
I use this book as a reference for my collecting of Frankoma.It provides a lot of information about colors, clays as well as pieces.The values provided are also helpful in determining whether a piece is a good value.I have met the author and he is devoted collector who is happy to share his knowledge with others.The book reveals this love. ... Superficial, poorly-written and patronizing
I usually don't write negative reviews, but I really was surprised by all the glowing reviews here.I truly think this is a terrible book and here is why. Jade Snow Wong's Fifth Chinese Daughter

The weighty Collector's Encyclopedia Of Stangl Artware, Lamps And Birds Identification & Values by Robert C. Runge Jr. offers a pleasing layout which lends to quick reference: color-coded sidebars of values accompany bright color photos and a guide which packs in Stangl company history and issues and reissues in an invaluable guide. Very strong recommendations for avid genre collectors, indeed.

This book was very helpful to me -I just started collecting Weller pottery since the beginning of this year.Although this book couldn't possible have every piece of Weller pottery photographed or drawn it isstill a very useful and appreciated guide for any Weller collector. I amvery pleased with my copy and would recommend it to anyone consideringstarting to collect Weller pottery or interested in placing a"ballpark" value on their Weller collectibles. There are somebeautiful Weller pieces out there available for the discerning collector -with this book you are an educated collector.Good luck and enjoycollecting some Weller pottery- maybe our paths will cross?

This is the only book I know of that is dedicated solely to Wellerpottery.It includes a very detailed history of Wellers conception anddemise.A section on the prominent Weller artisans and all the knownmarkings of the pottery is very helpful.Read more

Not as good as the others
While this line of books continues to give pictures and markings for research and collecting, the author seems to be running out of examples when there are so many out there he could include.

Too Little Information
I purchased this book for the sole purpose of "Marks" identification.Sure there are pictures of marks, but none are identified.When I did a search to find books with oriental markings, this book wassuggested.I was very disappointed ... pictures are great ... valuesappear too high.Enough said.

A wonderfully thorough reference for the collector...
Carole Bess White has put together an exhaustive reference work on Japanese ceramics from the early 20th century to today. Her extensive research really pays off in this book, crammed full of photos of all types. She did it again!

FIESTA
This is the third book in this series I have purchased by these authors.I like the book a lot.

A jumbled up mess
One of worst of the newer "collector" books out there.There isn't even a color chart with the names, you need to deduce them by flipping through all the pages and guessing at collections of variuos colors and doing a process of elimination.Fakes are mentioned, and the author says "you'll know them when you see them".Thanks alot! All the marks aren't even listed.What about newer peices versus old?
Huxford's Fiesta 10th Edition
I just received the 10th edition copy of Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta, and other related items.The new layout and design are exactly what this edition needed to set it out above the previous ones.It seems the forward is a bit lengthy. Each page is framed in the turquoise color. The new pictures are numerous!!And for those who collect New Fiesta (produced since 1986, the pages for this are expanded to include up thru Scarlet and quite a few of the pieces produced thus far in color pictures.I rate this book at 4 stars for one reason.I feel the prices are inflated and out of line.Yes, there will always be some "rare" items at high prices.There are a fair share of pictures that are the same as previous books as well. ... the most amazing book of pottery I have ever seen!
this man was a a head of his time. i have never seen anythig that has come out of the 1800's that looked any thing like this.The photography is great and the biography is good , but the pottery is the best i have ever seen hehad great form and great glaze you could not ask any more from a potter

This book has marvelous images of just some of the fine works that GeorgeOhr created. Quite simply the best reference work currently available on the output of Cauldon Ltd. and its predecessors and sucessors for over a century including helpful pricing guides.Because Cauldon's tableware patterns alone ran to several tens of thousands, this book could not be expected to address individually all of the company's products, but it does cover a broad enough sampling to make it the definitive work on its subject matter.Kudos to Robert Cluett for giving us this book. ...
