5-0 out of 5 stars A breathtaking must for anyone interested in Chintz
This is a stunningly beautiful book packed completely with beautiful photographs. For someone interested in collecting chintz, this is the absolute best thing I've found for learning about the range of patterns. That range is far more extensive than one would expect from the sparse collections of chintz at antique shops and shows. This book will fire the imagination! ... while the author gives many photographs, she lacks identifying marks for the items and in my opinion, is not correct on her values.however, she explains her process in the beginning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Volume
With this first volume, the team of Dr Greg and Angie Schaaf began their welcome and comprehensive American Indian Art Series. The reader can only begin to imagine the amount of work involved in such an undertaking. The Schaafs should be commended for their efforts. From A-Z the biographies of nearly 500 Hopi potters are included. From Nampeyo to the masters of today (Rondina Huma, Steve Lucas, Rainy Naha, Mark Tahbo, etc, etc) to the elders who sell from the doorsteps of their homes ... all are included. This being an initial volume, there are certain inherent shortcomings. All photographs are reproduced in black and white.Artists photographs, in many cases, were far from current. The first edition, published in 1998, has a photo of Rondina Huma which is over 20 years old. Similar 'vintage' photos are included.Examples are not consistent. Some potters have numerous examples included while certain award-winning potters have 2-3 at most.Again, one can only begin to imagine the amount of time and effort to meet publication deadlines.A second printing (Nov, 2004) is now available and it is my understanding that some updating has been done.It is good to know that the price is now within reach of all readers.A secondary market price of over $200, for the first edition, was totally out of reason! If you are a collector, this publication and others in the series would be valuable additions.Subsequent volumes, in the series, are in color and the biographies appear to be more current.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Hallmark Book of Hallmarks
Here's hoping this robust hardback book is reissued in an affordable soft cover to assist those who really need it . . . researchers and beginners! Its presence since 1998 has had a wide and dramatic impact on Hopi pottery interest levels and is already, itself, a First Edition collectible, jumping from its $60 issue price into the $300-$400 collectible range (at the time of this writing - amazon.com).4-0 out of 5 stars Get this if you are into buying Hopi pottery
If you are ready to make an investment in Native American pottery from the Hopi, this book is a "must have". Every gallery I've been at pulls this book out when I ask them something about who made a particularpiece of pottery. The author provides information on every known Hopipotter. It includes complete family histories, who they learned from, andhow much some of their art has sold for. Also included is an appendix oncommon signatures and hallmarks. If you're a new-comer to Native Americanpottery, this is not a good starting point -- try "Southwest Pottery:Anaszai to Zuni" by Hayes & Blom. Also, if you are looking forthousands of pretty color pictures, this is not the best book (even thoughthere are some nice photos). But if you're going to spend money on pottery, check it out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars #1 Book on Antique Limoges by Debby DuBay
Love this book and I highly recommend this book to collectors at all levels and specifically to hand painted Limoges porcelain collectors and china painters.Debby DuBay's books are absolutely beautiful and are useful price guides and reference books. The best books on the market - don't let the price keep you away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Collecting Hand Painted Limoges is a must for the collector!
I met Ms DuBay at a conference were she was the opening guest speaker on turning a passion into a profession and then throughout the week she lectured on Limoges porcelain.Dynamic is not a strong enough word for her! After meeting her I purchased all three of her books on Limoges.I love Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain because it covers the history of painting on porcelain and the women who had influences in the 19th -21st centuries, the art of china painting using examples from artists who are currently painting on porcelain and then she has a section that covers antique Limoges boxes to vases and another section that provides all of the back stamps.Absolutely wonderful book!I recommend all of her books on Limoges.(I even purchased her Potter book!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for the collector of hand painted porcelain!
I love all of DuBay's books but this is my personal favorite! As a collector of antique Limoges porcelain and as a china painter - I use this book as a reference source. The unique pieces are fantastic and the information is informative yet interesting.Highly recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Guide
This book is fabulous. I can't begin to say how many times I have read itand flipped through the pages for information. It is clearly written andthe information is presented in such a way that even the novice collectorcan easily find details from glaze color and dating to prices. Price guidebeing located in the back is rather annoying (rather than the value beinglisted directly with the photo) but this a small price to pay for such afabulous resource. For the more advanced collector, I recommend ScottNelson's "A Collector's Guide to Van Briggle Pottery".

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for the collector of this art pottery
This is a great book. It contains just about everything a collector of van Briggle might need to know, with the exception of a truly accurate price guide. Online auctions have rendered price guides in most reference booksof this type obsolete, so this isn't really a flaw. It gives one ajumping-off point, but be aware current values online are often less thanthose listed here.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Van Briggle Reference I've Seen...
This reference provides a history of the Van Briggle Pottery, with a focus on the early history. The tips for dating pieces by glaze color, clay texture/color, and bottom condition are invaluable for new collectors. This isa must-read for anyone interest in Van Briggle, especially sinceit's really the only reference book on the market! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The baseline for Roseville Art Pottery
The Huxfords are wonderful authors that have offered, collectors of Roseville Art Pottery, a basic foundation for identifying various Roseville lines. No one author [I personally author a mid-year price guide]has allthe answers, but each of us attempt to add to the ongoing data base.TheHuxford volumes are an essential tool for Roseville collectors and Dealers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Certainly not an "encyclopedia " of all Roseville Pottery.
I purchased both the first and the second of the Roseville series bySharon and Bob Huxford, hoping that I would get a complete guide of allRoseville pottery with prices. Unfortunately the "encyclopedia"was not complete. I guess this is how the authors sell books by not puttingtogether a definitive book on Roseville. ... Read more

I purchase books online based on the reviews so lets be honest.Debby DuBay's book Antique Limoges at Home is the book to purchase.Gaston's book has terrible photographs & just can not compare to DuBay's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gaston and Dubay my favorite authors have collaborated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to Have
Without a good book for reference - collectors have to scan several - well - this book has it all - patterns - prices and good photos - remember price guides in any book are subject to local and regional trend - so don't get caught up with BOOK PRICES.Buy what you like for a price you think fair.Go buy the book - can't wait for the next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sour Grapes
This is one of the finest reference books in the industry today.Thoroughly researched and no stone left unturned, in fact, a remarkable manuscript by anyone's standards.I can hardly wait for his sequel to come out on Stangl Artware, Lamps and Birds.I hear its going to be a doozy!!1-0 out of 5 stars Another Very Disappointed Customer
The book is awful. The color pictures are awful; so much for professional photography. Poorly-written text. "I have to wonder if the author and his partner have set the prices to reflect their current inventory as they are also dealers of Stangl & Fulper potteries," said it best. Don't waste your money on this or any other Runge book that may be promoted. In it for themselves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Resource
Great guide that covers a good majority of California Potteries with a good selection of works from each potter.Values are not too inflated and color pictures are wonderful.A must if you need a general guide to vintage California Pottery, a hot item right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for California pottery !
Being that I live in Ohio, the big pottery names here are ones like McCoy, Roseville, and Weller. I knew nothing about any of the West Coast pottery companies. I desperately needed a source of reference. I chose this book and I have not been disappointed. It covers 28 companies, gives a biography of each, shows examples of the marks used, and very clear photos of items made by each.Descriptions and values of the items shown are also included.I highly recommend this book for any pottery buyers library.

5-0 out of 5 stars more than just a great pottery collector's reference
The book's focus is the pottery of two California-based companies, Treasure Craft and Pottery Craft, throughout the second half of the 20th century.Higby is intimately acquainted with his topic:he grew up on the West Coast with the pottery, he did business with its manufacturers, he has actively collected and traded in their wares for much of his adult life.He had personal access to the eyewitnesses, for reasons other than simply being an author or collector, and it shows.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not pleased
This was the first book I bought on Salt and Pepper Shakers.I didn't find it helpful at all.Unless you just want a collection of S&P books, don't waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Starter Book
The book has tons of pictures. Some of the sets shown are not "true" sets.It is a great book to get a general idea of all the many themes of salt and pepper collecting.High end and low end are all well represented. It was fun to see sets I never knew existed that I would like to have.It gave me more stuff to look for in auctions. It's always fun to add to collections!

2-0 out of 5 stars Erroneous Valuations.
The monetary valuations of Salt & Pepper Shakers in this book are virtually useless to either a collector or seller. I have never seen a book so totally unresearched on both pricing and product description. The majority of the photos of the S&P's do not describe the material utilized in their construction, so one is left wondering if they are looking at plastic, metal or other material. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
I find Schiffer collector books in general to be amateurish and of poor quality and this one is no exception. Many of the photos suffer from unprofessional lighting, rendering the supposed colors unrecognizable. There are also numerous typos, and the writing style is more of a personal narrative than a factual account. Some people might find this chatty style appealing but I find it distracting. I also don't think we need so much coverage of the "artistry of John Parry," especially of his jewelry. I'm sure he was a very nice man, but I think this info would have been better put at the end of the book as an appendix rather than in the front. Most people buy collector books in order to readily identify and price their items--the biographical information, and the stuff about "morgue" items is interesting, but shouldn't take up so much space. I recommend the next edition go more in-depth on the officially licensed go-along items, as these are more likely to be encountered by the average collector than some of the more obscure decaled lines that have pages written about them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Post '86 Fiesta a fantastic Book!!!!
I found the book tobe insightful and full of a plethora of information that experienced and new collectors could use. It is a worth while edition to any fiesta library. I also was thrilled to see the paintings of artist Philip Carroll in the book and on the back cover of paintings using fiesta. What a wonderful concept!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, this book is a definite MUST!
I was very pleased w- this book! I have been a Fiesta collector for several years & found this book not only extremely informative, but a very useful tool too. The writing is superb! This book carries current values for lilac, sapphire, & other HTF pieces. Because post 86 Fiesta is currently in production & "readily available", I understand that it is impossible to put values on anything else. I was especially fascinated & intrigued with the many great pictures, espeically of the rare & morgue pieces. Overall, this book is the best post 86 book on the market; it is definitely a must have for any collector!!! ... Read more
