5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Material
As on online vintage jewelry dealer, Atlanta vintage jewelry dot com, Warman's book was one of the first in my reference library. Sure, it has some faults, but not to the degree to make the book 'useless'. I used to spend my evenings in bed reading through the pages, getting familiar with the vast array of information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Drool . . .
Over the years, Warman's guides to antiques haveestablished a reputation for reliability. This volume is the third (2002)edition of their jewelry guide. It's lavishly illustrated with examples from many styles, eras, and price ranges. It provides a feast for the eyes and a lot of useful information as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars A visual feast for jewelry lovers
"Warman's Jewelry," 3rd edition, by Christie Romero, is subtitled "A Fully Illustrated Identification and Price Guide to 18th, 19th, & 20th Century Fine and Costume Jewelry."The book is full of fascinating and useful features, among them an extensive bibliography, glossary, index, and chronology. There are also a number of appendices, including a hallmark identification guide and a guide to the marks and names on Mexican silver jewelry and metalware.Read more

Not only was I attracted to this book because I grew up in the 60's, but because I also sell vintage costume jewelry on my web site, Atlanta Vintage Jewelry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
Keith Pinn, author of Paktong: The Chinese Alloy in Europe 1680-1820, inherited a collection of Paktong from his father to which he has added pieces and done extensive research resulting in this book.Paktong, a rare Chinese alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel, was imported during the 18th century and used by European craftsman to make wares in imitation of silver. It was not until around 1820 that sucessful attempts to copy Paktong resulted in what is now known as German silver. This book analyzes the Pinn Collection to identify and understand objects made from Paktong and how these differ and can be recognized from those made of German silver. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable pictorial reference for this great jewelry designer
So little is written about this remarkable designer that it is great to have so much information in one source about Eugene Joseff. The photographs recording his designs are invaluable to costume jewelry aficionados andcollectors. Joseff's contribution to film-making is unique and , until now, practically unsung.Movie stills, photos from the Joseff archives andphotos produced for this volume provide a valuable recordof hisprodigious and truly remarkable output.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Standard Reference
Since the collecting of antique knives (defined as those no longer in production and made before 1970) has developed in the last thirty some years, there have been many reference items published from the pioneer work of Robert L. Mays and others who reprinted original manufacturer's sales catalogs to those who have made detailed check lists of one or more long defunct products. One of the major criteria for collecting is that there must be enough surviving specimens to make a market. Thus, exceeding rare in numerical terms private brand and hardware wholesaler brands are not as highly desirable as the products of quality makers such as Remington, Winchester, and Case, who have made millions. Since knives were mostly bought to be used, not collected, the survival rate of these is high enough but not too high, especially in desirable condition. This book covers the field for the beginner but is still useful for those who collect other than the big three mentioned and want to know how to get started. It covers the history of manufacturers and the various brands they made. There are useful chapters on grading, on how to behave at knife shows, and how to spot fakes. The several editions of the work have stood the test of time. Specialists will need others. The listings herein are enough to get one started on a fascination hobby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for....
The old saying "you get what you pay for"definitely describes this book...Although very reasonably priced - there is little or no information in it as far as identification...It does however, give 250 patterns and breakdowns of pieces and prices that are now 8 years old - so not very accurate...If you're looking for strictly identification, this isn't the book for you...It barely scratches the surface, and you find yourself spending alot of time trying to find the pattern - only to find out its not in here....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for quick reference
While it might not be the most complete reference on silverware, it does serve a purpose - and is economically priced. It lists the most popular patterns, and their most popular pieces.Measurements are given, and are very helpful.I have several silverware reference books, and use this one for quick look-ups, other reference books for more detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for some, useless for others
I have read several books pertaining to flatware, and many of them have a few strengths, and more weaknesses. This book does not break that trend.Read more
