5-0 out of 5 stars Contenporary Bronze sculptor's assessment of Berman's work.
Harold Berman has done an enormous favor for all who have a love of traditional-representational bronzes. He has put together the most complete collection of photographs of table-top bronzes that I have seen inprint. The books focus on works completed between 1800-1930 and eachbronze is well photographed, many with additional"detail-closeups."Each work is accompanied by text givingsculptor, date and dimensions(in some instances, even foundry). As a bronzesculptor, I have found the series invalueable. The works are broken downinto categories such as: Equestrian, Child renderings, Soldiers, etc. If you have even the slightest interest in the bronzes that were producedduring said time period, you will find this series an absolute joy.Anyperson who owns statuary of the time and would like more information ontheir pieces would probably find what they need in these books.Auctionhouses, museums and individual collectors should not be without thisseries.Another book of similar subject matter that could interestreaders is "Bronzes of the American West." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Silver Flatware Pieces
This book is a great resource if you are looking for general descriptions of the hundreds of different types of sterling flatware pieces - it goes well beyond the standard place setting and serving pieces. However, itwould be better if it had better photos of some details and the price guideis very general - it does not value specific patterns. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars worth the price
Although limited in periods covered (stops at 1850), this is a handy, easy to carry reference.Kovel's may be more extensive, but the additional info is often not what you need in the middle of the antique mall checking out a possible purchase.I find I use both, write notes in both, and have many pieces I know are American and I can't find the marks in either. So, what the heck, for ten bucks it's worth having with you BEFORE you buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful reference
For the time period covered (1650-1850) this is a very useful, almost exhaustive reference. I turn to it when I need to identify a hallmark, and find the illustrations to be very helpful. I thought it was a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sweeping, Successful Overview of Collectible Silver Jewelry
I was very happy with this book. I have been collecting for 22 years. I have been a vintage jewelry dealer for just a few years. This is the book I open the most when buying, researching and selling anything silver. Organized by geographic origin, each chapter gives you a rich overview of styles, eras, hallmarks, makers' marks, quality, estimated value and more... Love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific resource!
I was looking for a book to help with identifying Mexican jewelry marks. This book went beyond just Mexican silver on to US, Scandanavian, British and other types of silver. It was exactly what I was looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intersting anecdotes
And an intersting read, but basically no more than a damnation of Gold itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining economic history of money
Found a used copy of this gem while approaching a 6 hour drive, and absolutely LOVED it.the 4th hour was quite tedious, dealing with the late 1800's, but the rest was very interesting. The last hour becomes pretty detailed, related to post WWII impacts, but that's for good reason, as this period is the most relevant to our current world.
1-0 out of 5 stars So far off the mark...
The 1 star is for the historical aspect of this book. Some very interesting info, especially on the early history of gold many thousands of years ago. But the recent history (late 1800's up to late 1990's) is so skewed that I almost could not finish it. It's ironic that Mr. Bernstein refers to gold on so many occasions as basically a useless piece of metal while extoling the virtues of paper currencies (mainly the Dollar) as the savior of the civilized world. To put it into perspective, that useless yellow metal, in the 6 years since the printing of this book has increased in value (measured by dollars) almost 140% (gold = $620/oz recently) while the greenbacks in my wallet have LOST 15% of their value in the same time. Gold doesn't pay any dividends but it holds its value a whole lot better than the constantly inflated dollar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super resource!
This book is a very useful resource if you deal in sterling silver flatware as it provides actual photographs, not drawings of the handles of each patter. The other benefit this book provides is that you can identify the pieces based on size -- and accurately call a piece by the proper name. Each pattern has a list of many available pieces and their value.I use this book alot and bought one for by business partner -- anyone who deals in sterling flatware should have a copy!

3-0 out of 5 stars good for a beginning
easy to follow and while this does not have hallmarks or much history, does carry clear pictures of standard patterns and makers.Good for a start and considering how little is out there, not bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Even More Disappointed...
I wish I had read the above review before I spent my money on this book. I think if someone is going to sell an identification "guide" for a specific category of goods and they are only going to cover a representative selection of that category, they should at least be honest about it on the cover. The cover of this one should say "If you only need a few photos from each manufacturer and you don't need makers' marks to help you IDENTIFY your silver, then this book is for you!!!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hagan Silverplate book is complete and easy to use
I found many of the patterns I collect covered in Hagan's book. The drawings are large and easy to use to identify your pieces. I also bought Hagan's Sterling Flatware which is set up in a similar manner. You can also use both books to note which patterns you want to search for. The dates given in the books allowed me to note which patterns were contemporary with the china I collect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
I have owned this book for at least 3 years, it is the most used book I own.If you are interested in identifying many pieces of silver plate, this is the book for you.Very easy to use.I was just on Amazon to see if there was an updated version yet, or I am trying to decide if I should buy a new one.Mine looks ragged, I have used it so much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but so much more is needed!
I collect silverplate - mostly flatware, and have been studying it for several years. I'm not the authority - that's why I want to learn more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Read, Hot Art
A Passion for Metal is truly an apt title for this book. Mr. Harvey writes with wit and a clarity of thought about his 30-plus years as a sculptor. The book is part instruction manual, part art criticism, and part philosophy text backed by truly beautiful photographs of the work from Harvey Gallery on every page. You can sit down and read it from cover to cover or open it up to random pages and get enjoyment out of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Great Wish Book
This is a beautiful book! Vibrant color photos of some of the most classic bakelite jewelry ever made. Also some great, unusual things such as school pencils and charms that are rarely seen. Unfortunately, most of us who buybooks like these are not only interested in the photos and descriptions butare very much interested in the price/value guides. The value guide in thisbook is way too non-specific. It gives price ranges for entire pages (ordouble spread of pages) without giving estimates for individual items oreven groups of items. An example: pages 102 and 103, $600 to $1100. Not thebangles on page 102 and the pins on page 102 - just PAGE 102. For someonelooking for a beautiful bakelite jewelry "wishbook", this is it!However, if you're looking for an updated book with a usuable price guidethis book falls short. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous "coffee table" book
This book is full of absolutely beautiful photos of (mostly old) American sterling place and serving pieces. Its strength is to help identify unusual pieces that people today don't have a clue about. Not very useful for identifying patterns, unless you happen to stumble across a photo of a pattern whose name you are seeking.Patterns are not indexed, but types of pieces are.The price guide (e.g., $30 to $85 for a teaspoon) is absolutely useless.Interesting form to photocopy to use to keep track of pieces you acquire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Book on Sterling Flatware with Great Pictures
I could not be more pleased with this book.It contains page after page of beautifully photographed flatware and contains the history of numerous popular patterns and the great number of pieces available in the various patterns, including the rare and unusual pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sterling Silver Flatware for Dining Elegance, 2nd Edition
I could not be more pleased with this book. It is 204 pages of excellent photographs and descriptions of many patterns, along with a history of the unusual pieces and their original uses. The price guide is just *one* page in this book and is meant only to provide a range. Such a guide would be out of date as soon as published, and it is not realistic to expect it to be current or definitive. (It may have been better left out!) This is the finest book I have seen for a serious silver flatware collector. ... Read more
