5-0 out of 5 stars AWorld Revealed
Margaret Duda's new book magically transported me into a place and time I'd previously known little about: China's epic Qing Dynasty, with its fascinating legends, myths, customs, religious beliefs, and cultural norms. The author astutely displays hundreds ofbeautiful artifacts - pendants, symbolic locks, grooming sets, eating kits, embroidery-needle cases - to bring this vanished world to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written and photographed treasure
For anyone who has a love affair with China and or silver adornment this book is a find. For those of you who don't, read it anyway and you will be delightfully surprised.Margaret Duda is obviously a scholar and an immensely readable one.Her son, Paul Duda, who did the photography is equally talented.I'm buying this book for Christmas presents for family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GORGEOUS BOOK WITH FASCINATING HISTORY
This is an uncomparable tome for anyone interested in adornmentor Chinese social history. The level of scholarship, depth of information, and narrative ease will impress academics and laymen. The photography has obviously been done by an accomplished visual artist. Such an incredible collection and wealth of research has obviously been done as a labour of love. I hope Mrs. Duda's love for her subject continues in many other volumes. Well Done! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and informative
I really devoured this book. The photographs show all the important types of older European beads beautifully, and the text was well researched and written.3-0 out of 5 stars A well-meant, but flawed attempt.
Ms. Jargstorf's 3rd book on bead research is her most ambitious, and most provocative. She is on the most solid ground when discussing the beads of Germany and Central Europe. Her discussion of ancient beads is problematical, as very few of these are pictured to relate to the text. She offers a great many ideas and theories, but presents very little substantiation. Some of her ideas are just silly, or misinterpretations of history. The photographs are variable in quality and reproduction, are not numbered, and often do not enhance the text. The "Value Guide" is given in British Pounds Sterling, and is therefore not very useful. The most interesting beads are merely said to be "rare"--and no value given. As such, this section is almost pointless. I recommend this book, but only if the reader remembers that it has serious flaws, and is spurred to do some cross-referencing to other sources of information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jet as Art
I sell Victorian jewellery, have collected books on the subject for years. This is one of the best. Helen Muller not only shares her wealth of knowledge, of history and of the process of making jet jewellery, but she also makes it clear that this antique jewellery is truly an art form. Her illustrations, factual and meaningful information and life-long collectiohn make this a must-have book for any dealer or collector

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information in a little book
I sell jet, as well as Amber, and highly recomend this book to all my customers.Helen Muller covers mostly antique Jet, of course, but also covers the imitations that were popular at the height of Jet fashion.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Comprehensive Survey of Jet
Helen Muller provides a welcome service to collectors of antique jet jewelry. Her short but very concise survey includes a history of English Whitby jet (the kind that most Victorian mourning jewelry is made of), andits manufacture. She also offers hints about distinguishing authentic jetfrom its lookalikes. The book contains many black and white photos ofrepresentative types of jet jewelry and collectibles. A must for thecollector of jet and mourning jewelry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Finale
In this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Final of Four on Chase
This book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors.Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four.Highly recommend! ... Read more
