5-0 out of 5 stars transistor radios
This book is chock full of very very good color pictures of many many transistor radios from the past that many will recall and remember, and some may still have these radios laying around and using them.A pleasing site for the eyes with some general information about these radios accompanying the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Transistor Radio Collector's Bible?
Mere mention of a radio in this book improves its selling price, and a big color photo--well, phew! Pretty much the pricing Bible, (along with Bunis books) Beautiful photos, a minimum of text, lots of radios. This would bethe perfect collector's guide--the one you would want if stranded on anisland, except for two things. First, there is no (bleeping) index. I mademy own. And, second, since people really swear by this book, they sometimesget stubborn when buying or selling radios if the set's price does notmeet, or exceeds the book value. This is not the fault of the author, sodon't take it out on him. Times change. eBay is having its way with prices.Roll with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars XLNT! Collecter Kindred Kudos! A BEAUTY!!
I'm not literate enough--I make typing errors too--to add to the BEAUTY of this work. Saw it in a bookstore but I thought I'd try "A.com". What's shipping, etc.? I was slow to buy ebay--but I'm not missing thisbook! If I'm reviewer #3-- I have some sorta dibs on communicating w/Mr.Collins. I only felt comfy w/looking at the pics--but the layout, props,& text are segs I'm looking forward to examining closely. Holmes saysit's very interesting & elementaryly XLNT--a veritable ABC'sof TV. Ifyou like this book email me--cause I want to see/know more early TVstuff--thanks--to this book, I hope we all will be energized to share TVhistory images. davideo has left the box.P.S. GOOD GOIN' GARYB.!(Photographer)

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures but where are the descriptions?
Boy, does this bring back memories, and although I did not see any of the several different sets that I grew up with in the 50's and 60's, there were some models here that were very familiar to me. Philip Colins and Gary Brodhave done this creatively but without clear objective. I constantly foundmyself wishing for more descriptions of the various models. I had some realquestions about them, and felt a little cheated that there was not moreinformation about how they came to be. I did not need the information abouttelevision events -- where does one begin? Mr. Colins gave us a few, but itis like having 3 pieces to a 6,000- piece puzzle. The photos were great, however, and now I would like to see their book "Radios: The GoldenAge."

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, okay text...
The Golden Age of Television is the latest "picture book" from Philip Collins (author of the well-known "Radios: The Golden Age" and "Radio Redux"), this time focusing on classic television sets from the 20's to the early '90s. I say "picture book" because Collins' books are always scant on text -- he's only written 3 pages of text on television design, the rest devoted to synopses about important TV "events"-- but the pictures (by Garry Brod) are what make the book. And what great pictures! The book is a pictorial survey of television design from its beginnings. A lot of the trends in television are implied, like the pictures that show the evolution in design that lead to the famous Philco Predictas of 1958-59. The pictures are stellar, accompanied by contemporary magazine covers, ads and cartoons. Still, you sometimes wish Collins would spend more time getting things straight. For example, its a bit incongruous reading all about "American know-how" followed by several pages of English-made sets, or to see a picture of Phil Silver's "Sgt. Bilko" appear on a pair of British-made sets from the early 50's.I ended up buying my copy from the States (online through Amazon.com) because General Publishing had not yet secured a Canadian distributor. This is one of the first books aimed at the non-specialist that will undoubtedly help raise interest in the field. Books like this remind us of the times when TV sets were not just the flat monitors they are today, but when they had real character. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Usefull but not so Usefull
This book is not one of Goldmine's best issues but for the most part it gets the job done. The listings are many but detailed they are not. The part that bothered me the most was the general price guidelines...for example if you look under an artist and you do not see the album listed itmight say in small print the record label and a general price value.Itwould be more helpful to list more album titles for the artists instead ofgiving a general price. It was also disappointing that only NM values aregiven. How many records from the 1950's do you have that are NM?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There are two volumes in the Crystal Clear set...
ISBN: 188660603X is Volume 2 (252 pages) which describes and pictures additional radio sets not in volume 1.5-0 out of 5 stars Fan-tastic, Informative, Comprehensive
My father used to tell us children aboutthe "old" radio days and how the family would gather around and listen to the radio shows. He would speak of his love for those old radios.I , like everyone else I suppose, have seen old radios in antique stores. However, I don't recall having ever seen a Crystal Radio.I happened to be at an antique show and saw a copy of the book. I decided to buy it for my father. When I got home I started going through the pages and was amazed by the information in the book and the amount of crystal sets there had been. The author has done so much research and I feel the wiser for it. I am glad that I happened upon this book. I have learned from it and know that my father will enjoy it whenever I finally decide to give it to him.He is bound to have many more stories to tell me about "the old radio days" but somehow I think I am going to enjoy listening to them even more. ...
