An up to date and practical introduction to RF receivers
Dixon's style is clear and concise, aimed at beginners in the field of telecommunications. He effectively motivates the reader by describing the major aspects of RF design instead of focusing on implementation specific details. Note that this book does not present a theoretical analysis of topics such as propagation, synchronization, filters or control loops and instead gives a qualitative overview of specific technologies.
A nice overview for beginners
The subject matter of the book is extremely attractive. Unfortunately the treatment of most topics are superficial and not sufficient for the serious RF designer.Read more

Really Fun Book of Vintage TV Memorabilia
I don't really collect this sort of stuff but I loved this book because it brought back my childhood buying Beverly Hillbillies viewmaster sets, Charlie's Angels puzzles, etc.Contains hundreds of color photos of all sorts of merchandise: TV Guides, dolls, comic books, lunch boxes, coloring books, records, cups, all sorts of toys, etc. The shows profiled with memorabilia are The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched, Bionic WOman, Brady Bunch, Bugaloos, Charlie's Angels, Chips, Donny and Marie, Eight is Enough, Family, Family Affair, Fantasy Island, Flipper, Flying Nun, Gidget, Gilligan's Island, Good Times, Green Acres, H. Disappointed!
I ordered the new edition when my copy of the 1994 edition started getting worn. What a disappointment!Aside from just not liking the new layout of the book, I was unhappy to find that now only major cities are included,making the new book almost useless to me since most of my travel is out ofrange of any of them. I hope Mr. Dingle and Peregrine Press take note ofour comments and return his guide to its previous useful form. In themeantime, I'm keeping my old copy!

Indispensible for car travelers
Anyone who has ever traveled across state or county lines, needs a copy of Essential Radio.Perfect companion to go along with the road map and flashlight in the glove compartment. I definitely recommend it.

New Edition, LESS Information...
While I thought the first (1997) edition of the "Essential Radio Guide" was helpful, the fact that the new edition contains only half as much information as the first is disheartening. Mr. Dingle now uses anexternal source for his radio station data, and exludes not only thesmaller stations, but entire markets as well. While it is not practical toinclude *every* U.S. radio station, skipping many medium-size marketsseverly limits this books usefulness. I had hoped to see *more* radiostations added in the new edition, or possibly Canadian radio (Toronto,Montreal, Winnipeg, Vancouver, etc), instead of drastically fewer. Whilestill useful if you only plan to visit the largest markets in the U.S., formost travel it will leave you hitting your car's scan button,waiting untilyou hit the next major city. An interesting overview of vacuum tube technology
John Stokes has endeavoured to tell the story of the vacuum tube from its earliest beginnings up till the demise of the this technology. The technical content is pitched to the collector and includes many excellentphotographs showing the evolution of the myriad of tubes produced. A Comedy Collector's Bible - Sort Of...
For students of comedy, Smith's Goldmine Comedy Record Price Guide is priceless. Those of us collectors who are lucky enough to have picked up a mint Brother Theodore or Bob & Ray On A Platter for next to nothingwill delight to see the lofty prices afforded to these and many others.Smith definitely lets his personal tastes be known and his write-offs ofsuch classics as Robert Klein's Mind Over Matter, Richard Pryor's ThatNigger's Crazy and Peter Sellers' recorded output may leave some fansconfused/angry. But that's the norm in album guides of all sorts. All inall, comedy historian and expert Ronald L. Smith has given collectors anentertaining, informative and exhaustive study of humor on record.

Everything I ever wanted to know about comedy records
Amazing book. The guy not only has every comedy record, but has listened to them all. What I liked best was that he was fair with all types of comedians -- he digs Lord Buckley as well as Homer and Jethro, Mort Sahl aswell as Jackie Mason, and tells you what their best records are. I alsofound out I have some albums worth BIG BUCKS! Yeah!! But he doesn't saywhere I can sell them. Great to find a book that's worth the money. Photosof album covers were good, too. Wish there was more of them.

The reference is very valuable, though not quite exhaustive.And if anything other than highbrow humor makes you laugh, then try to avoid reading the reviews of the albums, they'll just make you mad.The harshcriticism of record after record makes you wonder if the author actuallyhas a sense of humor. ... misses several marks.
I picked this up from the remainder bin and am glad I did not pay much for it.
Excellent, imaginative, fun, and useful
This book has a lot of fun radio designs.It doesn't teach radio principles.I think it's for builders who want to fool around with some differrent ideas.I liked the tube regenerative radios.He mostly used 1S4 and 3S4 tubes which are inexpensive and their filaments can be run on a C-cell or two.For B+ he puts 2 or 3 or more cheap 9V batteries in series.He winds coils on plastic film canisters and uses easy-to-find components ... EXCEPT for the ZN414Z and the ZN416E.Fortunately the MK484 appears to be a replacement for the ZN414Z.So every design in the book is still doable.Neat ideas!AA1WW
