4-0 out of 5 stars Goldmine Record Album Price guide 3rd Edition.
I like the book because as opposed to some other similar books it lists the album titles along with catalog numbers. The front of the book also has discriptions of different company's record labels and what they looked like over the years. Although I think there were some things left out in some of the label descriptions. It's still a great book for any record collector. I have seen other record books over the years and this one, Well is a keeper. Now all we need is a real good book to tell us record collectors what kind of inserts and posters came in each record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goldmine Record Guide review
An invaluable, descriptive price guide on LPs.My #1 overall favorite!Very good for Jazz, rock and punk (obscure artists & bands). Provides three (3) prices based on condition as well. Much more definitive than Osborne's record guides but prices are not as "realistic" (averaged) as Jerry's.Only flaw is that Import and Bootleg LP information is VERY sparse - especially on Beatles, Hendrix, Jazz, and punk.Value of Beatles Vee-Jay "counterfeit's" should also be listed as some are not that terrible sounding. A truly great overall LP guide for most needs. Now if I could only find the same type of excellent price guide for Reel-to-Reel tapes........

4-0 out of 5 stars Now includes Compilation, Soundtrack, and Cast Album values
Eliminating common LP's and concentrating on $20 and up items is a good idea. Adding various artist, soundtrack, and cast recording LP's is helpful. Also thankfully includes classical LP's, particularly RCA LivingStereo. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Worthless Reference Source........Save your money
As the other reviews noted, organizing the listings by musical genre instead of artist or record label was really dumb. If that weren't bad enough, the author also makes the mistake of assuming that all or most of his readers should be "knowledgeable collectors", and for that reason, common records are not included at all. 2-0 out of 5 stars 6th Ed. - Disappointment
Fine reference but horribly organized. The author has chosen to structure the book by genre of music and not by artist. In doing so, a particular artist may be found in several different parts of the book depending on what particular record you're looking for.Not only is this cumbersome, it's fairly subjective based on the author's definitions - e.g. is this Rockabilly or country? Is this Blues or Rhythm and Blues? The author admits in the Organization of This Book section that; "The inclusion of a given artist in a particular section is often a matter of arbitrary choice." Additionally, if you have an artist that you're not familiar with, say the Bang Boys for instance...where do you look?Jazz & Big Band? Blues? Country? Rock& Roll?, etc.It is a frustrating experience. To add insult to injury, there is no index to the book (which was the saving grace in the 5th Ed..)1-0 out of 5 stars Not What It's Cut-Out to Be
Although this guide is recommended by a few 78 RPM record collectors on the internet, I found it full of omissions. Older recordings in my our collection, even though their historical value may be significant to some, are not listed at all. It seems that some of these performers are unknown by the author. Look up John McCormack with your search engine, for instance. Many fans of the records by this famous Irish tenor, particularly in Ireland, would be appalled. The label examples are fun, but are not worth the full new price of the book. Buy it used from Amazon if you want to check it out. Otherwise leave your searches on the internet for other books more beneficial to your collection. For later recordings, or those of the '50s, check out 'Rockin' Records'. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money !!!!!
If you want to learn anything about Beatles records, you are much better of getting copies of Bruce Spizers books, and tracking prices on Ebay. Forget about this overrated and out of date waste of money. I wish I found out before I blew a bunch of money on Ebay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Official price guide for the Beatles records and memorabilia
It doesn`t matter if you have been collecting the Beatles for years or a novice just starting out, this book has something for everyone.Chock full of details like label variations and year of release. What better way to find the value of your record collection than by the experts, and Mr. Cox certainly is that.He has been writing the only official guide to the Beatles records for years. Now,this book is in a handy size so you can take it along to yard sales where you`ll know if you`ve found that treasure or not.For ebayers, this book is a money saver. No more,"I sold it too cheap cause I didn`t know the value" Highly recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Beatles Research and Pricing Guide..
Perry Cox is the world renowned expert on Beatles records and other collectibles. The man simply has an encyclopedic knowledge of their recordings. This is the ultimate pricing and descriptive guide to their records, covering vinyl in all forms issued in the USA (which means it doesn't cover import versions) and CDs, with other collectibles touched on in its final pages. The emphasis here is clearly on Beatles LPs, EPs, 45s, and CDs, both group efforts, and solo releases. If you are a Beatles collector or want to start a collection, or learn how much your existing collection could be worth, this is the book you want and need. There is no other reference that can touch it. Some of the photographs are poor, but I'd chalk that up more to the printing process than anything. If you need to know EVERY variation of Sgt. Pepper's that Capitol/Apple ever released, or the nuances of the differences in all the pressings of any other Beatles LP, EP, 45, or CD that you can think of, this is your book. Perry's long essay on the "Butcher Cover" version of Yesterday and Today is, alone, worth the price of admission. With prices of Beatles collectibles still soaring, with vinyl getting more and more valuable as the years go by, you need to be armed out there in the marketplace, whether you are buying or selling. You can't do any better than to foray out there with this book in hand. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
Reads like a magazine article padded out to book length. Completely disposable. For record collectors like me, it says nothing new. For the rest it won't mean much. Don't bother, unless you see it in a bargain bin for $2 (which you probably will.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Much ado about nothing!
What a letdown! While this book purports to cover the period 1950-1975, I was sadly disappointed to find that it completely omits one of the most important musical influences of that period, DON COSTA, who was a noted arranger-conductor, master of the 12-string guitar, a performer in his own right, and a man who influenced the careers of many well-known performers like Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Johnny Mathis, Ferrante & Teicher, Paul Anka, and the list goes on. Don Costa's fabulous arrangements have appeared on labels such as ABC-Paramount, Columbia, Mercury, United-Artists, and his own label, DCP-International. Don Costa was a true musical genius and as such, he was hired to be the musical director of a major Boston, MA radio station when he was only 15 years old!... One can only wonder what other important performers or facts were left-out of this book, and such omissions only serve to cast doubt on the seriousness of the data that did manage to find a place between the covers of this publication!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that, perhaps, bites off too much
This is one of the best price guide books for American records. Due to its detailed information and clearly organized listings, it surpasses all previous publications in its scope and usefulness. It adds artists notpreviously mentioned in past price guides but does omit artists on asomewhat arbitrary basis. Why Getz and not Gillespie etc.? For the artistsit does include, much hard work is reflected in the thorough discographieswhich list reissue information and pressing chronology with great accuracy. Obscure artists with limited product are, as is common with books of thistype, omitted. For the money, this is the best book. Only Osborne's RockinRecords covers more ground, but in less essential detail. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
With records becoming more and more plentiful, it does lose a little of the obscure stuff it used to carry. However, it is a MUST for any collector!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the think you need for a lifetime hobby.
Ever wondered how much one of those 45s you have is worth? Here's the place to look. Not every artist is listed but with every new edition, more are added. I have a first edition which contains over 30,000 or so entries. The reason why I asked what I did above is beacuse if your collection contains older records or records that look just like the day they were first sold, you could probably have a collection worth thousands of dollars. Some songs are available on different labels, ones that are easy to find rather than ones that are rare on other labels. I saw that a near mint copy of "For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler and the Impressions on the Vee-Jay label is worth $10,000. A very good codition of that record is over $1,000. If someone has something rare like that or colored vinyl, they are lucky!! If this is your hobby whether you've started or it's been with you all your life, you shouldn't be without this book. RECOMMENDED!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book...if you're into rock

5-0 out of 5 stars really informative book, nice photos
Nice color photos, easy read although there is so much information and names, one can get confused on who is who and what company they started and worked for. Covers the complete history of the phonograph and the records that play on it. Explains how it came about, all the patent wars between people and technology that changed the phonograph early on. Nice sized book, easy to handle, easy read. Beautiful color photos of phonographs of all types. Lots of information. Worth having if you love old phonographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive History of the Talking Machine
This book is the size of a coffee table book, but you can actually read it and learn something. It is difficult to find a good history of the phonograph, especially the business history of how it developed. This book fills the bill.It also features a large number of clear photographs so you will know what the author is talking about. If you are interested in antique talking machines, or need a good coffee table book, this is a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is truly a remarkable book. If you are interested in the subject of phonographs and how they got started then this is the book for you. It is filled with the history of the phonograph. 3-0 out of 5 stars Beatles Memorabilia Price Guide 1997
I was disappointed with this book due to the fact it needs to be updated from 1997.It only covers Beatles memorabilia, not records or albums.Didn't cover autographs.Only covers pricing for early Beatles items, nothing current or the Beatles as individual artists. If you need a price guide for early items and don't mind the book being outdated by 4 yrs, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible Resource for Christmas Music Buffs!
Goldmine's Neely has once again produced a gem of a book, this time focusing on the oft-neglected niche of Christmas music. Well documented, with lots of color glossy pages of rare album covers, this is a must-have for those of you addicted to holiday vinyl. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Bible Of Christmas Music
Even during the off season I find myself thumbing through this book, it'sa great source of information on collecting rare, hard to find holidayrecords.Plenty of singles and albums are listed that are worth hundredsof dollars if they're in mint condition and have a picture sleeve cover. It is also fun to look up the names of favorite artists & groups to seewhat, if any, holiday tunes they may have recorded. So next time you'recleaning out your attic, basement or in back of your closet, if you comeacross an old box or bin of 45s and/or albums-poke through, you never knowif some hidden treasure is in there, and not just Christmas music either! Tim Neely has a few Goldmine Collectors guides out there and all are tops. Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you need if you collect American records
The author clearly put great personal effort and care into crafting this book, which is a refreshing concept after seeing so many price guides that were obviously slapped together for a quick buck. I've read Miller's writing in several magazines. He's excellent. I also think he's right on the money with the prices, which reflects the fact that he is, himself, a record collector. This book is worth every penny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a quick word
being that there are no other books of this type out there to choose from, this book is essential for the discography information. gripes: 1st: there's too much recent muck listed in with the good stuff . 2nd: as usual, some of the prices these guys come up with are extremely debatable - but then, these guides are SUPPOSED to be a rough "guideline" to appraise lp's .3rd: didn't find much on the rare soul and funk 45's & lp'si bought this book for. 4th: got a question: why are EXTENSIVE elvis presley andbeatles discographies in every one of these price [...]guide books? geez! get over it already! both of those artists ALREADY HAVE THEIR OWN PRICE GUIDES and tons of books out there already covering every thought in their drug addled brains. i would have rather seen reproductions of some rare or unusual picture sleeves or lp covers. thank you.p.s. wouldn't all the price guide books be excellent if they were justmusic discography books instead of [...]price guides? yes, they would. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars POSITIVE REVIEW
Tim Neely is very clear in his Intro (or Disclaimer, if you will) that this book is a guide only and could not include many artist. His Intro addresses most of the negative reviews listed for this book.I liked the book and it proved useful to me.Yes, after almost 10 years it should be updated.Thank You.

2-0 out of 5 stars We deserve better.
Lotsa errors, omissions and inaccuracies. There's about as much chance of finding some of the Misfits singles for the prices listed in this guide as there is for the Boulder police to ever solve the Jon Bennet Ramsey murder.

1-0 out of 5 stars Many glaring ommissions and out-of-date prices!
I really was very dissapointed in the range of music that this book covers. I was hoping to get at least a decent discography of many of these bands, but this volume failed even that test. Having listened to this music in the 1970's and 80's into the 90's and beyond, I take offense to the many glaring ommissions that the author made either by choice or poor research. A few examples are: Psychic TV, Primus, the Muffs, amd Cyprus Hill are a few bands that did not make the cut at all. Steve Albini's original band Big Black is ommited but his 90's band Rapeman is represnted, go figure! (Probobly because by this time he had produced bands like Nirvana, even though Big Black is by far the more influential of his bands) Other bands have only a token mention with only one or two of their discs listed. Examples: Didjits, Naked Raygun, Fugazi, etc. Even more popular acts like Elvis Costello may have his LP's well listed but his Stiff records 45's are completely ignored, likewise Joy Division and the Specials also are poorly represented in the singles department. Especially frustrating to those who grew up with this music is the author's choice to include such modern pop-rock monstrosities as Hootie and the Blowfish and Blues Traveler and other such bands which might find a fine home on most adult contemporary radio stations but can not in any good conscience be considered 'Alternative'. Also if you go into any finer used record store you might be a bit surprised at some of the prices. While the vast majority of record prices have remained constant, he is well off on many of the rarer issues. In conclusion it seems that the author has a real shallow understanding of the heart and soul of the variety of musical forms that are collectively entitled 'Alternative', his viewpoint seems to be that of a contemporary mainstream rock station's music director, strong on the 90's rock but excedingly weak on the roots. ...
