5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific reference for any Breyer collector!
I first purchased this book in it's second edition, and snatched up the third edition as soon as it came out! I only wish Browell could update it every year. The number of new products Breyer releases annually causes the book to go out of date very quickly, and I generally pen in new items myself.5-0 out of 5 stars Breyer Animal Collector's Guide
I soooo needed this book.I started collecting Breyers around 1987.I was seven at the time.Needless to say, most of my older Breyers are in played with condition.I have started to increase my collection since I became more aware of their value...The guide helped me identify a couple of my older ones and renew my interest in my collection.I already can't wait for the next edition!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wealth of Knowledge
This book is a must have for anyone, novice or expert!I was looking for something that would educate me in my new "hobby" of gem collecting and ran across this valuable book.It contains sections from how to purchase great diamonds to colored gemstones (my favorites!).The first part of the book deals with examining stones, how to hold the stone when examining it, using a loupe (those round magnifying glass-type things that are used by jewlers), identifying the parts of a gem (yes, there are parts of gem such as a table, a girdle, a crown, a pavilion and a cutlet) , and the different cuts of stones (round, trilliant, pear, Marquise, oval, emerald, etc.).The second part of the book deals exclusively about diamonds, the importance of the cut and proportion, body color and grades, faulty cuts, girdle faults, popular and nonpopular shapes, desirable colors, diamond flaws, clarity and how it's determined, V, VV, S, I explained, weight, spotting frauds, and comparing diamond prices.Section 3 is about colored gemstones, determing value, gemstone treatment, fraud, purchasing colored gems, and pearls.Part 4 is about Design and Style and offers important advice before buying.Part 6, the final chapter, offers important advice after you purchase a gemstone. There's even a section that gives retail prices, by carat,on each type of gemstone!Lots of important diagrams too!My next book to purchase that will compliment this book is Gem Identificatin Made Easy by Antoinette Matlins and A.C. Bonanno. This book will explain how to use pocket, portable and laboratory instruments to identify diamonds and colored gems! Yeah, baby!No more guessing!

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Starter Guide
This book is exactly what I needed to substantially increase my knowledge of colored gemstones. It contains several 4 to 5 page sections of colored gemstone pictures with identification and a very informative section that gives general price per carat ranges for a large variety of gems.I've just added loose gemstones to my retail stock and I've referred to this guide so often that I know many of the page numbers by heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book pays for itself many times over
One thing that retail jewelers count on is that the public is unwilling to do its homework.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait
This is a great book. I've collected decoys for several years and I own the previous edition of Collecting Antique Bird Decoys and Duck Calls which is now some 10 years old. No disrespect, but the new edition by Russ Lewis far surpasses the old book. Not only will you find thousands of photos but Lewis, an avid collector himself, provides loads of information on traditonal carvers, factory birds, regional influences throughout North America and much more. The depth and breadth of the work is impressive. Lewis is a university professor, and you can tell that he is an educator at heart. It also helps that he has a soul of a collector. If you collect decoys, bird calls, or simply enjoy the outdoors you'll love this book. I'll bet my Red-breasted Merganser decoy on it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars STILL THE STANDARD BUT NOT WITHOUT ITS WEAKNESSES
It's been almost 30 years since I bought my first overstreet Guide way back in 1977 featuring a Porky Pig cover by legendary Dondald Duck artist Cark Barks. While the Overstreet Guide remains the gold standard for comic book price guides, it is now without it's weaknesses. It is certainly the most comprehensive guide listing books from the so-called platinum age to the present and this time including info on books dating back to the 1700's although calling these books "comic books" is a bit of a stretch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!
This book is the industry standard for pricing comics.Additionally, it contains a good amount of info on grading, history, CGC and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy Both Books!
This is Volume 2 of a two-book set. It has new performance evaluations and different upgrade and function tips... the first volume also has much more information about ammo and the basic function of the 1911... you really need both books to get all the information.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for...
Upon receiving the book, the first thing I noticed was the cover as advertised on the internet is different from the actual book.OK, I can live with that. However, as I read the book, I found that It just doesn't live up to its subtitle; "A Complete Look At The Use, Care & Repair The 1911 Pistol".In my opinion, it speaks more to Gunsmiths, and people already in the know, so to speak, than it does to someone interested in learning about the 1911-A1 pistol.
2-0 out of 5 stars Left me feeling wanting.........
Somehow, if I had spent the time reading the book a little before purchasing, I wouldn't have bought it.He talks extensively about competition rigs, rules, etc. which I had no interest in. I have yet to see a gun rag writer talk honestly about guns. Ever see a bad review in ANY of the gun magazines? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blade Guide an excellent buy
This book covers everything from old factory made folders to custom knives and their makers. It is a very useful book for finding old knives in one place.

2-0 out of 5 stars A slightly better effort.
This is the latest effort from the same folks who destroyed "Levines Guide to Knives and Their Values"by publishing the emasculated 5th edition. This effort is a step up, albeit a small one and from a position pretty low on the ladder. The format of the book has been improved, with clear page numbers and reformatted data tables, but most of the photos are the same and the text is still the same as that in Levines 4th edition. The listing of knife markings and manufacturers is pretty good with lots of additions, but still missing the quality ratings of the manufacturers.Pricing examples for individual examples of knives have been updated. Some sections are unchanged from data displayed in Levine's 4th edition. The process for valuing a a pocket knife has been improved? to one taking 4 pages to explain and it is hidden in the middle of the volume and not listed in the Table of Contents.MY guess is that somebody wasn't too proud of the effortor process. In Levine's 4th edition the process is explained using 1/2 a page inside the back cover.I bought it because I thought it was a real update to Levine's 4th edition, but I'm disappointed to find in most areas it is not and definitely not worth the expense if your copy of Levine's 4th edition is still in one piece.Just one man's opinion. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent General Catalog
As standard catalogs go, the Scott series is fine for most people. There are still some questionable decisions on the numbering system, but that has always been true with Scott. And I still can't fully accept their decision to list "semi-postal" issues in a seperate section. Also, don't expect to find detailed listings of varieties. Anyone who is interested in a specific country (or topic) will already know to look for one of the specialised catalogs covering that area. A major improvement is the addition of color images throughout the series. This makes identification easier if the stamp is illustrated, but given the flood of issues over the past few decades, chances are that you'll still have to look to the design descriptions to track things down. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love the layout
He went through a lot of trouble to get actual color pictures of the pottery and porcelain along with the marks.I have a lot of books on marks but I always consult this book first because it will show the type of pottery made by a potter along with the marks.I really like it and wish he would do a second edition. It does not include histories or other detail of the potters.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of those "keystone" books for your library.
If you need a history of each pottery manufacturer, this book is not for you.The author cuts right to the chase and gives us what we need -- an authoritative directory of makers' marks. He provides a photograph of the mark and right next to it an illustration of a typical product of the factory.Although in some cases experts might quibble about what is "typical" the result is an incredible cumulative reference source.Dating has been derived from Kovel, Lehner and other reputable sources. The marks are arranged alphabetically, which is about as user-friendly as this sort of tool gets.Add to this good indices, and we have a reference tool that no museum, collector or dealer should be ashamed to own. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best introduction to Japanese antiques in print
If you love Japanese antiques, you cannot live without this survey, with superb photography, spectacular taste, ecclectic choice, and scholarly background by the editor of Daruma magazine. I actually buy extra copies for my friends. I buy a new copy when mine starts to get worn. What more can be said?

5-0 out of 5 stars lavish, comprehensive, informative antique guide
This is not your typical collector's handbook listing objects and possibly briefly describing them and listing going prices. This coffee-table quality book with the title "Collecting Japanese Antiques" is a survey of Japanese art works and cultural items with sections of advice for collectors. The historical and cultural background on the different items favors what would be of interest to collectors. But it is also informative and relevant simply for its artistic, historical, and cultural material. Readers looking for concentrated information on Japanese art and culture accompanied by attractive color photographs would find this work exceptionally suitable. For the collectors it is meant for particularly, there's sections on "Tides and Trends in Collecting," guidance in developing collections of certain items (e. g., baskets), lists of artists, notable regions and schools for certain antiques, and especially desirable objects in certain categories. Seton also moves to the technical subjects of materials, production, and workmanship which are important for collectors not only in appreciating items and assessing their value, but in making a preliminary decision about their age and authenticity. Among Seton's 13 categories of antiques are screens and scrolls, ceramics, furniture, sculpture and metalwork, dolls, and tea ceremony utensils. Seton has lived in Japan since 1972, where he currently teaches Japanese art and poetry. In 1993, he founded the quarterly magazine "Daruma" to cover Japanese art and antiques; which he still edits. "Collecting Japanese Antiques" is a work any collector or lover of Japanese art and antique objects will want for sound education and easy reference, and at times for enjoyably looking at the numerous color photos of the varied Japanese objects.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book About Japanese Antiques
This book is a real treasure. If you buy just one book about Japanese art and antiques, this is it. Its presentation, descriptions and explanations are excellent. Reading this book is learning and pleasure at the same time.
