4-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED WITH THE DOCTOR
I recently received this book. I was surprised to see how many brand issues were omitted. Try to find various years of Stadium Club or Fleer Ultra for example. Many are missing. I am not sure if this was intentional or accidental. This book still has a lot of value, but not Dr. Beckett and company's best effort. I would look elsewhere for more complete and thorough compilation. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste
They decided to leave out a great many sets. No UD any year, any set: no Playoff any year, any set: no Upper Deck Pros & Prospects, Classics, Pro Sigs, or Leather & Lumber, Origins, Topps Turkey Red. These are just the sets we found missing so far. According to Beckett, this book has "Complete checklists and pricing for every important baseball card set from 1909 to present", yet they skip some of the most actively traded sets on the internet. Seems they are either totally out of the loop to what is important, or else are hoping to add more customers to their Online Price Guides. This book really doesn't even rate 1 star. If you want complete pricing, better look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Informative Price Guide for Baseball Cards
I've used this guide in the past years and find it very detailed and informative. If your a serious collector it is to your best interest to know the pricing on your cards at any given time. By purchasing this price guide every year would be very helpful in keeping pricing on your collection current.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's (almost) all here!
Hi there. I'm Frank, and I'm fillin' in for Zaggy while he gets away from the scene for a while. For this review, I wanna tell you all about one of my all-time favorite reference books: the annual Beckett Baseball Card Price Guide! Since I work at a comics and sports collectibles store, I've find this book to be very helpful. Sure, there's the monthly Beckett that helps keep you in the know about the most popular baseball card sets. But there are those times when you have those weird and offbeat cards from various promo sets & stuff that the monthly issues just don't have the space to list. That's where this here big book comes in. Just about any single and set you can imagine, from cereal promo cards to those ones K-Mart put out back in the 70s, is listed and priced between the 1000-plus pages of this book. Of course, not every single card ever made is listed and priced here. But as far as I can tell, there's very few that aren't! Um, listed that is... uh, yeah. It's even got some really neat miniature black & white photos of some of the more valuable cards. Which is kinda neat. If you're into that kinda thing of course. You know? Oh no, I gotta go. Ro'y says I gotta get back to work and sort more cards. And I don't wanna get Ro'y mad!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Comprehensive Guides On The Market
The Beckett Guides are the most popular guides in the world, bar none. And what I've always liked about Beckett is the depth of information contained in his guides. With this one, you get listings of sets from as far back as the late 1800's to 2001. Now please note before I go any further, if you buy this guide and by chance your card or set is not listed, it does not mean your card(s) are worthless, it simply means that what you have may not currently be receiving alot of market activity, or may be a card or cards that aren't currently known to exist. You must realize there are virtually thousands of sets on the market and newer ones coming out every week by various companies, so it is almost impossible to keep up with every one produced. So Beckett concentrates on sets that are both known to exist and have heavy market activity. Oh and one more thing, if you have rubber bands around your cards, please get rid of them. Go to your local card shop or go online and get some card holders. Condition is a key element in a cards worth, and rubber bands can cause severe damage to cards. Now, as for this book, Beckett has sets listed in ABC order and lists the individual cards of the set. So if you are putting together a set, and you see yours listed in this guide, you have the perfect checklist to keep up with what you do and do not have. For each set listed, there's a little bit of information included, and there may be production numbers included in the trivia. Beckett shows you how to collect, how to preserve your cards, how to determine condition, shares football card terminology, and has other interesting facts about football card collecting. Ahh to go to a game and load up on hotdogs. Collecting football cards brings me back to the time when I was in high school and went to the games to pull for my home team (and yes, I ate a lot of hot dogs then too). Collecting football cards make me think about the times when me and my dad would watch a game together, screaming at the players to run run run. So as I'm sure you already know, collecting football cards for most people is more than just an investment. And when I look through this Beckett guide, I see lots of cards that came out when I was younger, and they bring me back to a time(The late 60's, The 70's, and early 80's) when playing football was one of the things I loved to do the most. Beckett guides have remained the most sought after guides since the 80's and are used the world over. Some of the brands of cards you will find in this edition include Fleer, Upper Deck, Topps, Score, Playoff, and Donruss. Again, there are many other brands listed in the guide, but these are some of the most heavily traded ones. This book is a valuable tool for any true football card collector.

4-0 out of 5 stars You could wait until next year but.......
I needed a new price guide and I wanted a very recent one.I figured I could wait until 2001 but I desided I would get it now(this guide is great quality and has all of my cards listed in itand I have tons of cards!). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars this book only covers years 1981 to present
this is not highlited when ordering

5-0 out of 5 stars You need a book like this to help complete those old sets
Monthly price guides can barely keep up with the baseball cards that are produced each year, what with the multitude of variations, inserts, and whatnot. For older cards all they can do is focus on the stars and errors. But if you are trying to finish up your sets of 1957 and 1964 Topps sets, then you need to know ALL the cards so you are prepared for dealers who organized their cards by numbers, players, teams or a random pile. The "2002 Baseball Card Price Guide" gives you a good shot at finding out exactly what is out there for the set(s) you are currently working on finishing up. In practical terms the prices quoted are going to be more valid the farther back you go, but the key thing about these Price Guides is that they list all the cards from 1931 to the present, including all the extras, inserts, special sets and the like from Bowman, Diamond Stars, Donruss, Fleer, Goudey, Play Ball, Score, Sportsflics, Topps. Upper Deck and whatever other companies have sprung up that I cannot remember off the top of my head in all their infinite variations. You can either take this book to your next baseball card show or use it to put together your want list. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Very Worst of Price Guides
This is exactly what I said in my review of the baseball price guide: "I'll make this short and sweet. I thought this book would be helpful when going to sportscard shows. I felt I wouldn't have to carry a big book around. But this book is so superficial you are better off just taking the Monthly or Beckett Plus Price Guides. DO NOT waste your money on this book. I returned it to Amazon." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of mud slinging.
I found the book to provide an interesting history on collecting from early times to present. After the history lesson is over, William's seems to spend an inordinate amount of time dwelling on the various misdeeds ofUpper Deck President Richie McWilliam.McWilliam has a very strong (andnegative) reputation that is well understood within the industry.Whyspend half a book telling everyone that he is dishonest, a liar and a cheatwhen it is already well understood?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at the sports collectables industry
The "Barbarians at the Gate" of the baseball card industry.Fascinating, yet creepy, to see from the inside how a child's hobby has been exploited by sleazy characters. Will definitely turn you offcollecting new cards as an investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written book that is a must reading for card collectors
I enjoyed this book very much. It has two themes: first, it shows how one company with the right idea and the right people behind it can revolutionize an entire industry, against all odds.Second, it tells usthat to succeed in today's competitive markets you have to elbow your wayin. While the allegations of wrongdoings by trading card companies seemlike unsubstantiated hearsay, the book does make you feel that you are onthe inside, witnessing how the real entrepreneurs do it.Very entertainingread. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Basketball Price Guide for those of us after older cards
If you are a series collector of sports cards, whether basketball or otherwise, then you are well aware that the monthly price guides put out by Beckett are the way to go if you are trying to keep up with the explosion of basketball cards that are being put out each year. But all they can really do is focus on the cards of the stars, which is true not only for LeBron James and Shaqueille O'Neil today but Wilt Chamberlain and Pete Maravich from the olden days. But if you are really trying to But if you are trying to put together a set of 1971-72 Topps, 1986-87 Fleer or 1992-93 Hoops, then you really need to have a list of all the cards so that you are ready when you head off to a card show or shop and have to deal with dealers who organize their cards by number or team or name of the players. "The Official Beckett Price Guide to Basketball Cards 2005, Edition #14" serves your organizational purposes perfectly.Remember that the prices in this guide may well be obsolete as far as the monthly price guides are concerned, although the farther you go back the more accurate they tend to be. But you really want this book for all the lists of all of the cards compiled by the good doctor and his associates.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book you need to put together your want lists
Look, we all know that monthly price guides cannot possibly keep up with the explosion of basketball cards produced by all the companies putting out cards today. All they can do is focus on the name cards on the stars. But if you are trying to put together a set of 1957-58 Topps, 1986-87 Fleer or 1992-93 Hoops, then you need to know ALL the cards so you are prepared for dealers whether they organize their cards by number or team or player's name. With the "Beckett Basketball Card Price Guide" you have your best chance to find out exactly what is out there.True, in practical terms the prices quoted have a chance of being obsolete by the time you track down the cards you want, but the key thing about all of these Price Guides is that they list all the cards, including all the extras, bonsues, special sets and the like. Whether you are looking for a card of this year's MVP, Allen Iverson or Ernie Calverley (he was on the first basketball card put out by Bowman in 1948), this is the book you want to use to put together your want lists when I head out to the card shows.

5-0 out of 5 stars great source for the basketball collector
This is a great source for the basketball collector. It is the most recent of the annual beckett price guides and provides listings for card sets that can't be found such as classic, scoreboard, chivas de guadalajara, and 5-sport sets. no card is left out has been left out. This updated book now gives you updated values for some of Kobe Bryant's rarest cards like the Scoreboard Die-Cut and the Chivas de Guadalajara team set Kobe RC edition. This book is recommended to all collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will attract any with an interest in world baseball or in collectible ballgame cards
This could've been featured in our collector's section or even our sports section, but is presented here for its powerful artistic survey of Japanese sports through its lovely baseball card art. SAYONARA HOME RUN! THE ART OF THE JAPANESE BASEBALL CARD features player history, card art, and loved and hated baseball teams alike. It will attract any with an interest in world baseball or in collectible ballgame cards - and many a browser with an interest in neither!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Informative Book
Vinatge Japanese baseball cards are among the most beautiful baseball collectibles in the world.I discovered these treasures over ten years ago during a trip to Japan and became an avid collector. My passion for the cards eventually led to a on-line card business and a career as a baseball writer.John Gall and Gary Engel'snew book Sayanara Homerun! depicts hundreds, if not thousands, of theese beautiful cards. The book's presentation is wonderful.Cards are gracefully portrayed as art but the accompanying text will statisfy both baseball card collectors and fans of Japanese baseball.
