5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for card collectors
This is very simple. If you collect baseball cards, you need ths book. It's just that easy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for card collectors
This book is an absolute necessity for baseball card collectors who are in search of specific players. The book alphabetically lists every player who has appeared on a baseball card. Not only does it list the major companies (like Topps), it does an excellent job of listing locally issued cards. It includes minor league cards as well.If you are looking for a specific player's cards, this is the best place to find every card produced of that player.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you want your favorite player's cards, get this checklist
Of course Beckett puts out what is pretty much considered the definitive price guide for baseball cards, which is also the place to go to if you are looking for a complete list of all the cards in a given year that you are working on (seven cards to go to finish the 1953 and 1966 Topps sets, starting to work on a 1962 set).I also have my "Team Baseball Card Checklist" for working on Yankees cards by companies other than Topps.I do not have a need for the "Beckett Baseball Card Alphabetical Checklist," but I can see exactly what sort of collector who would value this book, namely those who are trying to get all of the cards for their favorite player.Of course, that was a lot easier to do in the olden days when there was pretty much just one major baseball card company producing cards.I shudder to think of how many dozens of cards come out year for Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez. But if your favorite player is anyone from Hank Aaron to Jerry Zimmerman, then this is the book that will tell you what you are looking for when you hit the shops and shows.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for locating your favorite football player
This book alphabetizes all of the football players and the cards that theyare featured on.The only reason that this book did not get 5 stars isbecuase they did not list every parallel card (silver, bronze, etc., if youare a card collector, you know what I mean) in the book, when it would nothave taken up much more space or time. This would have made the player'slist more complete. As far as the book content, the list is very completeand is great for discovering new and unique cards that you might not haveknown existed. I am looking forward to #2, so I can further update mylists. Good job, Beckett, but please be more complete next time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for studying and teaching about masculinity
Bloom's well-researched study of baseball collectors in the 1980s is a wonderful text for studying and teaching about masculinity and popular culture. His book raises important questions about the crisis ofmasculinity in the latter part of the twentieth century, and the ways thatpopular culture practices like baseball card collecting both challengedand, ultimately, shored up traditional gender boundaries between men andwomen.Bloom's work also focuses extensively on the issue of nostalgia, particularly the idealized memory of 1950s American boyhoods. An accessibleand engaging tone makes this a fine text to use in popular culture classesor in gender studies classes.

As a baseball card collector for over 20 years, I have read countless articles in countless publications about baseball cards and cardcollecting.Almost every one of the has focused on either the financialaspects of the hobby or on how great it is to be a collector.John Bloomhas written a thought provoking and academic book which examines WHY wecollect.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
If you are a football fan or card collector this book is for you. Many beautiful pictures of cards of the past. When they played for the love of the game and worked in the off season for money.

2-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE
Terrific book. I collected football cards during my childhood into adulthood. Unfortunately, my extensive football card collection was entirely damaged beyond repair a few years ago. Replacing them is an impossibility for me due to today's staggering costs for vintage cards. This book is the complete pictoral collection of Topps football cards, stats included, from 1949 to 1985. I virtually have most of my collection back, thanks to this book. Topps, I can't thank you enough for publishing it. I hope other card companies will follow suit. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Problems
It's a huge book, over 600 pages but there are a few problems.
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy
I think Beckett gets worse and worse every year.I am so upset with their magazines and their books. This books skips so many years. For example there is no Donruss 1991-2000 cards listed at all.Majority of my cards are those ones.So this book become very useless to me.It's just like their magazine they skip everything.I haven't been able to find a book yet that will tell me what the price of all my cards are.If you have any special insert cards, this book will not list them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beckett's remains the price guide for collecting older cards
Okay, here is the situation. Beckett's monthly price guides can barely keep up with the baseball cards that are produced each year, let alone all those surplus sets and special collectible cards that are flooding the market on a monthly basis. However, as a collector I am not concerned with the current deluge and am working on sets of older cards from those long forgotten days before Fleer and Donruss opened the floodgates. Those monthly price guides will certainly give you prices, but they are not going to be any help if you are trying to figure out which cards you need to complete a particular set that you are working on. I finally finished my 1966 Topps set, have six rather expensive cards left to complete a 1953 Topps set and a couple of dozen for both the 1962 and 1967 Topps sets. That means I need to know ALL of the cards so that when I hit the card shops and shows that I am prepared for dealers who have their cards organized by numbers, players, or random piles.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Basketball Price Guide for those of us after older cards
Clearly the monthly price guides put out by Beckett are the way to go if you are trying to keep up with the explosion of basketball cards that are being put out each year. But all they can really do is focus on the cards of the stars, which is true not only for LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony today but Wilt Chamberlain and Pete Maravich from the olden days. But if you are really trying to But if you are trying to put together a set of 1971-72 Topps, 1986-87 Fleer or 1992-93 Hoops, then you really need to have a list of all the cards so that you are ready when you head off to a card show or shop and have to deal with dealers who organize their cards by number or team or name of the players."The Official Beckett Price Guide to Basketball Cards 2004, 13th edition" serves your organizational purposes perfectly. The prices in this guide may well be obsolete, although the farther you go back the more accurate they tend to be.But you really want this book for all the lists of all of the cards compiled by the good doctor and his associates.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad if you like incomplete checklists...
I just recently purchased this book off of Amazon, and once I started going through it, I quickly became disappointed.I have a very small stack of about 20 Bob Feller cards, and a few of them were not even listed, so I'm sure that there are several other Feller cards that are missing.I bought this book because I wanted to collect every Bob Feller card ever made, and now I am right back where I started - without a complete Bob Feller checklist. Also, though no fault of the author's, this book only goes up through 1999, so nothing from 2000-present will be listed, and the prices listed for each card are sure to be a little out of date.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't let their price be your guide!
Sports Collector's Digest (SCD) has been the authority on the sports card hobby for years. Like most of their previous publications, this one's full of good solid information and it includes a few photographs of key cards;however, anyone thinking of buying this book to use as a price guide shouldkeep in mind that this was published in October of 1999 and is thereforenot an up to date representation of current sports card prices.Dependingon the player and issue, sports card prices can change dramatically in avery short period of time. If you're strictly looking for a price guide, then I suggest you pick up the most current issue of a monthly price guidemagazine which will have pricing information that more accurately reflectsthe current market. This guide will put you in the "ballpark" interms of pricing, but I recommend it more for research and information thanfor accurate pricing. Overall, a useful read for anyone interested insports cards. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and surprising
Now, I'd never heard of Rosenhaus until this summer because of the T.O. situation. I picked up this book expecting it to be a typical self-absorbed, egotistical piece of junk. However, I had no idea about the depth of Drew. He came to terms with his sexuality early in his life and he didn't let small minds stop him from becoming successful -- including his own. Did you know he auditioned for Cirque de Soleil? His talent was throwing enormous styrofoam triangles into the air and then catching them behind his back. He didn't make the cut, but he vowed that he would drink a gallon of Dr Pepper everyday from that day forward. That may sound incongrous, but I think it shows the level of commitment he's willing to make. So, Mr. Rosenhaus please take a bow, this is a book that may seem overpriced at 10 cents, but feels really right to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Sports Has To Offer
The name of this book should be re-titled 'A Shark Never Sleeps: Wheeling and Dealing with the NFL's Most CLASSLESS Agent.' This guy is so disgusting I won't bother to give my litany of negative aspects of this book. The only interesting part of this book is that it exposes the ugly side of professional sports.
