A nice book for the beginner, but not complete
Allmen's book is a nice reference, but not an absolute essential. It has some valuable information in the beginning, such as how to determine the age of a card and so on, but her examples aren't as plentiful as one wouldwish. As well, her prices aren't current, and having been published in1990, cannot possibly reflect the kind of resurgance in interest inpostcards that places like Ebay and Amazon auctions are generating. But ifyou're a dealer or a serious collector it's a nice book to add to yourshelf.

An excellent resource for beginning postcard collectors.
This book starts with short easy chapters on the topics of most interest to beginning collectors: history of postcards, how to gauge age, condition, buying and selling, terms and abbreviations. Contains a comprehensive list of postcard publishers, a good glossary, but less than adequate index. One particularly good chapter runs through 5 postcards from the same artist that range in value from $1 to $150 in order to give a sense of what is valuable. This type of comparison would be of great value in any collectables/antique book and I wish there were more examples in this book. The novice can quickly get up to speed on the basics, then browse the extensive price listings both to estimate the value of their own collections, or to see if the local antique store is overpriced (it is!).The price list contains several thousand categories. Contains many b&w photos. The color insert would've been better if it showed a greater variety of postcard types rather than emphasizing a specific topic: European Art Novaeu.I highly recommend this book to beginners. Advanced collectors will probably already know the basic information, including the monetary value of their own topical interests. However, the extensive price list makes a good shelf or shopping reference even for advanced collectors. ... Read more

Good primer for the stamp "investor."
This book has some great information on the economics of stamp collecting and its past. The "boom" of the 70's probably won't happen in philately again, but many stamps can make worthwhile long-term investments. Basically investment grade stamps pre-date the 1920's. Issues since then (with a few exceptions) have been so mass produced as to be worth little more than face value (ie. commemoratives). Again, this is a good primer for the person seriously wanting to spend some money on good, classic stamps, and hold them for some time. From there you'll just have to take time to learn about specific stamps - and you're on your own there.

Stamp Investing
This book would be of some use to the stamp collector, but it would be most appreciated by the stamp collector who is going to invest hundreds, or more dollars on stamps. Includes information about economics, strategies, opportunities, buying and selling, scams, condition, grading, and more. An Honest Look at Investing in Stamps
Stephen Datz has written a very helpful guide for the beginning stamp investor. A Terrific Introduction to Stamp Collecting
I have bought many philatelic books over the last 15 years and still rate this little paperback as the best value among all the introductions to Stamp Collecting on my bookshelf. If you are looking for a book about stamps you can stick in a purse or briefcase and read during short breaks,this is an excellent choice. Strictly for non-adults or maybe the novice USA collector
Interesting, colorfull, but not really needed by any serious or longtime USA collector. Maybe the novice USA collector will find this "entertaining", but you could certainly put the money you willspend on this book to better use "buying stamps", etc. Itwouldn't surprise me if Scott subsidizes the printing of this book throughtheir high retail prices for their yearly catalogues. ... Handy catalog makes stamping easier
This series (published annually) is an extremely handy way to identify and value U.S. stamps.
