Finally a historically accurate book on Hawaiian clothing!
It's about time that someone finally did real research into Hawaiian clothing, including the aloha shirt.This book is historically accurate. Much of what has previously been published is erroneous. What most of the world knows about Hawaiian clothing comes from the use of aloha shirtsafter WW2.While our beautiful environment stimulated the production ofbold and beautiful textiles, these were used in more than just shirts. Arthur covers womens' wear as well, and presents hundreds of beautifulpictures along with an interesting to read description of the history andculture of Hawaii. Portraits Made Accessible
The illustrations in this book once again demonstrate Tom Tieney's knack for making complicated historical costumes understandable and accessible. Most of these beautifully detailed costumes are taken from famous portraits. Mr. Tierney always gets the lines and important details correct. There is some amazing and subtle detail in the brocades and lace fabrics shown, and it could not have been an easy job to render or print. Excellent reference for dolls or historical costume.

Great!
This paper doll set was purchased by me for my collection, and it has definitely filled it's purpose. I enjoyed it immensely, and even my sister liked it. We both found it in great likeness to the movie, "Shakespeare In Love" and although that's a bit far fetched, it was a great set anyway. This book really cuts to the bone of the Vintage Business
I have purchased many books about vintage which are somewhat "Dated" in style, and yes Mason dresses big name celebrities, and that seems to be the major driving force behind the vintage industry today, as well as the designers who are using vintage to inspire their latest incarnations.If you are interested and have the money to shop at this level then this is a terrific book, with great photographs and wonderful biographies on important designers from the past who carved the way for the new designers from Zac Prozen, to Rick Owen or Imitation of Christ.It looks like there was a lot of hard work poured into this reference guide and I have found it to be extremely valuable at setting the record straight, giving great insight to an industry and lifestyle I can only dream of.This is not `Goodwill Shopping' or for the person with a `Beer Bottle Pocket', this is vintage for the Privilege class. I have seen Ms. Mason interviewed on television many times and she seems to be speaking from the heart with an abundance of knowledge and true passion, you can really tell she loves what she does and it certainly comes through in her book.

Forget this book!
This book has it all (or has nothing, depending on how you look at it):Unhelpful "advice" on how to find and sell vintage clothing, a price guide for clothing that isn't even illustrated in the book (come on... Pucci made a million of those now famous "mod" dresses... a vague description isn't going to cut it!), pictures of only HER clothing with no estimated value next to them, and an overall arrogant tone throughout the entire book. She basically states in so many words that you will fail in this business unless you can open up a posh boutique in L.A. (like her) and cater to the Hollywood elite. There is a nice short biography section on various designers, but that's not the point of this book, now is it? This book is nothing more than a 350+ page advertisement for her own store's clothing. She shouldn't include retail sales (from her store and a couple of others) in her price guide. Some values go back as far as the early nineties, that's too far back, and she also includes Christie's Oscar Dress Auction, which was a media-hyped charity auction from the late nineties. It's not a reliable source for pricing. I give this book two thumbs down, WAY down.

I Have Been Waiting For This Book!!!
Wow, I have to say I have been waiting a long time for this book.I have been collecting for many years, but never was able to find a satifactory referrence guide to important designer vintage. This book has it all!I just wish I could afford all the wonderful vintage that is out there in the world.This book sets you straight on the vintage industry as a whole, from the fashion design business to the little girl collector like me!The value listings are very helpful and the hundreds of biographies on the designers simply cut to the chase....where were they and when, as well as the puntuation marks of their careers.I also found the referral to the best vintage businesses worldwide very useful, now if the book only came with a plane ticket to Paris I would be thrilled!In my oppinion a must have for any serious vintage collector. ... Great Pictures of 1909
This book has great pictures of 1909, they are wonderful to study. It only covers 1909 and not the rest of the early 1900's during which there were lots of fashion changes. Right after this time period there were further changes so it's a good stopping point. Dover is great for those of us who are looking at vintage fashion!

Lots of pictures to ooh and aah over

its great...if you love edwardian costuming
If you really like the Edwardian period, this is a good addition to your costuming library. But if you're a beginner I wouldn't recommend it.
You have to enlarge the patterns
I thought the patterns came with it, and the book was on techniques for the manufacturing. But you have to enlarge the patterns yourself. Other than that, its a good book if you have the time.

Great Source of Color Images
This book is really useful to me for the color patterns in the fabric as well as the colors for period fashion. Also, hairstyles, hats, and even shoes are detailed enough to reference for my own illustrations.
Wonderful Resource!
This book is a great resource for the re-enactor or costumer.It can be considered primary documentation, as it is directly reprinted from the original.There's a very handy glossary in the front, in case you are not already familiar with mousselain-de-soie.I wish I could make every dress in the book--it's so hard to choose only one of these delightful gowns! ... Always trust Dover Books
I had heard of the Vecellio book and had even seen excerpts from it here and there. As a member of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), with a persona in the Italian Renaissance, I was most anxious to see this book. It was all I expected! The first third of the book is Italian fashions from most ancient times to Vecellio's own period, which is the period of my persona. In no time at all, I'd found several costumes I want to recreate. The only drawback is the lack of color, but the drawings show considerable details.

Not authentic
While this book is fascinating as a means of seeing how dress was perceived, and as a primary resource (as the woodcuts are not modern), the costumer should keep in mind that these drawings are not always accurate,esp. regarding details. Many of the woodcuts have minor mistakes, some aregross misrepresentations of costumes Vecellio had no knowledge of. Aninteresting resource for the historian, but don't use this for costumingideas unless you either don't care for accuracy or know enough to sift thefalse from the true.

Very useful for costuming ideas
I bought this book with the expectation that it would cover all of Renaissance Europe and not just the usual area of focus for this subject (i.e. Elizabethan England).However, to my disappointment at least halfthe book concentrated on Italian costuming, which in retrospect is to beexpected, since the author was Italian!The author definitely focuses onmiddle to upper-class clothing and will not be helpful to someone who maybe looking for lower class clothing.Read more

It's "ukulele" NOT "ukelele"
I agree with the other reviews so I won't duplicate that. The author really should've gotten his facts -- and spelling -- right before publishing. He had a great opportunity to put out a good and wanted product, but he blew it. I was thinking maybe it's better than nothing, but no, I'd rather have nothing. Thank goodness there are more things available now.

Pretty pictures; not terribly informative
I've been told Steele's take on history is somewhat spotty; I'm not an expert so I can't confirm or deny that.To be honest, I've never even read the text.But the photos are numerous and great; there are over 125 full shirts in full color, many of them full-page as well.That makes the book perfect as an painting resource, which is what I use it for.If you're a fabric designer, costumer or artist, or just dreaming of the islands in their jet-set days of Lana Turner and Elvis Presley, this book is a good resource.

Great pictures, bad historically
Apparently the author was a collector on the US mainland since he apparently did not do much historical research in Hawaii. The dates are usually off about ten years.
