Godey's : A great reference guide
While it would be rare to find a Godey's book with every fashion print in it, this book gives you an excellent variety of the best dresses from Godey's. The descriptions give an idea of color mixes, fabric anddecoration. This book is a great reference tool for the Lady Civil War orMid-Victorian Reenactor or Costume Designer.

Great book....but I can't find our pictures in it!
I have 8 prints that don't appear in the book from 1865-1870.Want to find more info about my prints to include their value(at least an estimate).Pictures in the book are beautiful and pretty true to theactual work...except the real ones have a little "browner" paper. Very helpful and informative reference book.
I found this book to be extremely helpful in identifying popular linen styles and items for a collector.The pictures were clear and the descriptions sufficient for my needs.This is a good addition to acollector's library.

As a long time linen lover and now professional dealer I find this tombe to be a wonderful 'picture' book ~ but when it comes to actual informative content I feel that there are better sources ~ the information given is helpfull for the beginning to intermediate collector and the pictures areexquisite but somehow the lack of detail in the narrative portionsundermines the supossed purpose of the book.To its credit the book isnicely arranged by subject but lacks a comprehensive glossary.Overall,not a bad place to start whet your appetite for knowledge about vintagelinens, but if you want detailed informtion supported by anyting more thancursory research you will put the book down hungry.~ Sincerly,AnnChristine ~ thelinenlady

a great reference item!
I just received my copy today, and I am thrilled with it.It is exactly what I was hoping for, a useful, easy to pick up (it's lightweight and not so large that it's a difficult reference), simple to use reference material for our costume shop.Includes broader headings (sportswear), as well as specifics, the pictures are great (although more would be helpful), and there are fabric descriptions as well.Highly recommended as a reference, do not purchase as a reading book.Perfect for a work setting.

A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion
I found this book to be rather comprehensive in terminology and volume of terms.I would have liked tohave seen some dates for items, at least approximately.Eg: It is important to know when the zipper was invented in order to make a historically correct dress.But all in all the book has been helpful with definitions and illustrations.

Excellent Reference
The previous reviewer, Michelle Willingham, does not seem familiar with the use of a dictionary. It is not intended to be read, but consulted when information is needed. Read more

Fabulous Evolution of Black Fashion!
This book is really great becuase it emphasizes how crucial a role African-American fashion has played over the years. The photographs in the book are nostalgic-- A visual trip down memory lane as I recalled outrageous fashions from the 70's and 80's. I also went to the Black Style Now exhibit at the Museum of the City Of New York, which was equally fabulous. I think the book finally gives credit to the importance of African American fashion from the 1940's onward.

Best Reference on US Girl Scout history and memorabilia
Long awaited update on 1st edition.I could find very few inaccuracies

Disappointing
Please check this book out at a library or local Girl Scout Council before buying! I was disappointed because I have been searching for quite some time for information regarding four Brownie badges that I earned in the 1970s, but can't remember what they were for or how I earned them. Although this book seems well-researched and is full of interesting and little-known facts, the information I seek was not included in this book or its predecessor. Since these badges were earned within the last 35 years, I was disappointed to find no mention of them, especially when the book includes such a wealth of information regarding previous decades.

This is an amazing collection of information on all things about the girl scouting organization with information of program, evolution of girl scouting, uniforms, badges, age level and has information on other items used by girl scouts . It only covers a few years of fashion, but if what you're looking for are patterns for women's and girl's fashions from 1890-1896, this may help you.But do note, it doesn't actually have any patterns later than 1896.
