Another five-star fashion offering from Dover
Dover Publications are the go-to people for books on 19th-century fashion, and Stella Blum's "Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898" is at the top of the list.Like the companion volume by Joanne Olian, "Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from 'La Mode Illustree'" (another book on this topic that I've given 5 stars), this book comprehensively shows, in splendid black-and-white illustrations taken directly from the old "Harper's Bazar" (note the spelling!) the changing feminine fashions of the Victorian and Edwardian periods over the 31-year period from 1867 to 1898.Every illustration is at least full-page (there are some breathtaking double-page spreads) and accompanied by brief descriptive text.I would definitely put it on the list of books that every student of 19th-century costume must own.

A great source of information on the cloths worn by ordinary people of this time period.

This is a very useful source bookfor every day clothing, particularly things like men's clothes,kid's outfits, maid uniforms, and other things that aren't the high fashion clothing that many books feature. I design theater costumes, and have found this very helpful.

Comprehensive guide
This wonderful guide to vintage textiles was obviously written by someone with a vast knowledge of the subject. The numerous photos depict the textiles up close and personal with the majority being black and white. Overall, this guide is more suitable for general reference than pleasure, though without a doubt it is a joy to read. This is the perfect companion for flea market vendors or anyone buying or selling vintage textiles. Though I have many books on the subject, this is one book that I reach for time and again.

Good information
I liked this book a lot - good information and reasonable guidelines. If you are looking mostly for quilting pricing though I personally think that Stella Rubin's book is a better general guide.

Delightful Memories
While I am not a collector, I truly appreciated the artful display and extensive variety of handkerchiefs in this feature.It touched a chord from my childhood of memories of the influential women in my life (from relatives to the good Dominican nuns at school) and the delightful little "hankies" they all seemed to mysteriously keep tucked up their sleeves. The Best Way To Study A Time Period Is Through Examples Of Its Everyday Life
Thru illustrations created for the Sears Catalogs of the early twentieth century, clothing--functional, extravagant, glamorous, practical--is reproduced for visual inspection. Great for research, for curiosity seekers who wish to know what our foremothers wore, or in the case in which I used it, this is a perfect reference book to give to a dressmaker to let her see an example of an outfit you'd like to have made. Revisiting my past!
Here are pictures of all the clothes I used to wear to junior high school back in the good old days! We didn't have shopping malls yet where I grew up, and this is how I got my clothes for school. It brings back many memories.Now the Sears catalog is gone, too.

A fun trip down memory lane
I truly enjoyed reading the old advertising copy while looking at the old ads. Some of the fashions I remember my grandmother and mother wearing. Lots of fun reading.

One of the best 50's books ever made
This is a primary source book that tells the prices and materials, which are very helpful to a costume designer. I also enjoy the book Fifties Forever, which is similar except it's color photos of actual vintage stuff (the color does help, but the Sears catalogue is still great without it).

Very informative
I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was packed from start to finish with pictures. The book gives an excellent overview of what the average woman was wearing in the 1950's, unlike many similar books which focus on important designers.Read more

Every student of 19th-century fashion needs to have six books from Dover Publications in his or her library:

I would rank this book just behindVictorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898 (Dover Pictorial Archives) by Stella Blum and Full-Color Victorian Fashions : 1870-1893 by JoAnne Olian.If you have to be selected go with the first two before this one, but I still highly recommend this to round out the collection.More than 900 very detailed crisp drawing from the marvelous people at Dover Publishing again.They bring you inexpensive books that are a wealth of information, writers of period romance just cannot live without.
