Good
I own four of Tierney's coloring books. The Empire Fashions book is well drawn in terms of the clothing, but the people's proportions, especially the women, seem a bit off. I like the addition of pages of hairstyles and accessories, and the two page spread with the drawing of Napoleon crowning Josephine is good as it gives historical perspective to the book.

The illustrations were okay...
The dresses looked like they were hanging off the arms on some of the illustrations, the figures were drawn a little out of proportion. The dress details were lovely.

Lovely pictures but a lot of guessing without captions
I enjoyed this book, but it would have been really helpful for the author to have just given a couple of lines on each page to describe the outfits. For example "Silk ballgown, 1812" or "Muslin pelisse 1815," would have made this book more than just a child's cut out toy. Just a few words on the page would have made all the difference and given this book historical weight...and a fun learning experience. A real shame.

dozens of dolls
This book is full of excellent costumes to fit every ocasion, and use. Balls, walks in the park, traveling, court presentations; "George and Jane" are prepared for it all. The dolls have been great fun and very useful for everything from period dioramas to costume ideas. Even the undergarments on the dolls are apropriate for the period. My Mom has this book
I grew up with this book and I adore it. I've yet to find anything even CLOSE to this book- it's amazing.
Have been using it for 35 years
NOTHING beats Wilcox's various costume books. They are invaluable references for designers, costumers, teachers and historians. I wish they would reprint them again. I constantly recommend them, especially THE MODE IN COSTUME. And the clear simple line drawings copy and scan better than any others I have ever come across. I would LOVE a digital version of this book.

The Best Reference Around
This is an excellent reference for all costumers. There are extensive pictures of garmets, hairstyles, shoes, and textile patterns for every period from early Byzantium to at least the 40's.Although it is (currently) out of print, seek it out at your library or bookstore till they bring it back! ... Beautiful
This book is beautiful. It is a very helpful reference and it is just fun to look at. It was also great to have the description of each of the outfits. This book is much more detailed than the "80 Godey's Full-Color Fashion Plates (1838-1880)" by JoAnne Olian, but then I liked all the full -colored as well.

Godey's A guide book to Civil War Fashion
This is an excellent reference guide for Lady Civil War Reenactors who want to create beautiful day dresses and ball gowns. The book has detailed descriptions of each dress. A trueGodey's dress was for the lady ofwealth, however many women of average means subscribed to Godey's to getideas for the dresses they wore. Each page will give you an idea of colors,styles and types of fabrics used. This book is a must along with "WhoWore What" for a true insight into women's fashions of the 1860's

Twenties
Tom Tierney has put together a wonderful set of paper dolls in this book.He has beautifully traced the development of fashion during the course of the twenties.Included are sportswear, elegant daywear, sumptuous evening gowns and a fabulous wedding dress by Worth.My favorites were the fur wrap over a drop waisted dress by Louiseboulanger, a look often seen in photos of film stars of the era, and the Egyptian gown fit for a vamp like Theda Bara.I also like the resemblance of one of the dolls to Mae Murray as it adds a touch of authenticity. ... Marie Antoinette Paper Dolls Review
This paper doll book is beautifully rendered (like all of Tom Tierney's work), but it disappoints with it's lack of historical accuracy.Firstly, the doll itself bears no resemblance to the extant portraits of Marie Antoinette.In fact, the doll and a gown(plate 4) look as if they were based on a portrait of Madame de Pompadour.Marie Antoinette would not have been amused!

Shoes, Hats and Fashion Accessories
This book is great. It is just what I was looking for in doing some period research. The illustrations could only be better if they were in color. Anyone interested in fashion accessories of this period will not be disappointed.

Excellent reference
This book is exactly what it claims to be - a pictorial archive.For descriptions or details, Dover has a wide selection of books that will be of immense help with materials, construction, and history.For those who already have a working knowledge of the century in fashion, this book is a candy store of visual tidbits. What about descriptions?
This book has lovely pictures, although the author admits she has takenthe liberty to decide which should be included for each year. It would bean even better book if the articles were named, better yet a smalldescription, sometimes I wondered if a shoe were a man or woman's. Read more

Fun, but inaccurate
If you are looking for something fun on ancient Greece and Rome for your child to color, then this coloring book is perfect. However, virtually all the pages devoted to Greek and Roman military costume are historically incorrect.If you are looking for a more accurate and educational coloring book on Greekand Roman armies I reccomend "Life in Ancient Greece" and "Life in Ancient Rome" Those 2 Dover books are both fun AND educational. ... Good for quick visual reference!
I love to use this book as a quick visual reference while working on shows.When helping a customer, or explaining something to an assistant at our shop, this book is the easiest way to do so.It is so great to have a book where I can flip to a certain date, and have pages full of pictures grouped together to show someone what exactly I am thinking of.We have to work at a fast pace, and this book saves me lots of valuable time.

Lovely pics, no writing
They say up front that they (the authors) purposely did not put in any writing to as not to sway our view of the clothing.Alas, that means if one does not know period clothing from LOTS of different periods, one will not be able to identify items.Still, lovely drawings.It will make a fine adult coloring book! (Yes, I'm serious) :-)

Don't waste your money
This book consisted of black and white 2D scetches that lacked any real depth or detail. They are basic and generalised in presenting each period and contain nothing new that you would not have already seen or known about that decade.

Its still very good
Im not sure what I was expecting from this book....I am very glad I got it..its not awe inspiring as some of the others are..but its still goood quality...B.W.

The First Modern Fashion Designer
Tom Tierney pays tribute to the first modern fashion designer:Charles Frederick Worth.The illustrations are colorful and detailed, and the portrayal of Worth himself is excellent.
A Wonderful Chronicle of 19th Century Fasion
Charles Frederick Worth was one of the finest fashion designers of the 1800s. (Kind of like a Dior of the Victorian Era.) This collection includes three dolls (one of Worth, his wife, and a female model). C.F. Worth's doll only has one extra outfit, but the women have about eight to nine outfits each. The styles span the era from 1845 to 1900. The plates detail Worth's pioneering of bustle-type gowns. Day dresses, ball gowns, walking outfits, and several other dresses fill the book. The colors are varied and bright, while Tierney's drawings look well-finished. The dolls are printed on medium card-stock, which will stand up to moderate abuse.
