5-0 out of 5 stars First-rate book on a specialized Victorian topic - the bride!
The Victorians paid a lot of especial attention to wedding costumery, as Joanne Olian shows in her slim volume displaying the evolution of bridal and bridal-party fashion from 1860 to 1912 as seen in the fashion plates of the famous magazine "La Mode Illustree".The illustrations, all in B&W, are full-page and always accompanied by at least one paragraph of descriptive text taken from the original source material. This book should be owned in conjunction with Olian's other volume, "Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from La Mode Illustree", for a really comprehensive look at the topic of Victorian fashion. Also, anyone who is considering organizing a Victorian-themed wedding will definitely want to peruse this book for ideas!

4-0 out of 5 stars What the well dressed Victorian bride was wearing
Dover has a whole series of books devoted to reproductions of vintage fashions."Wedding Fashions, 1860-1912: 380 Costume Designs from 'La Mode Illustree'" has not only reproductions of illustrations but also detailed descriptive captions. These are not just bridal gowns done in satin, taffeta, and lace, but also creations for bridal attendants, sisters of the bride, and so forth (the idea that the sister of the bride has to have a special dress was an interesting insight into Victorian society). These authentic Victorian fashions will be of interest to costume designers, cultural historians, and fashion enthusiasts.Companion volumes provide full-color fashion plates, contemporary photographs, and authentic fashion patterns.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent victorian costume source

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the casual costume designer
Although the pictures do not go into great detail, this book has a wealth of information for the costume designer. For kid's halloween costumes, school-play costumes, and general information on style and period, this book can be invaluable. Included are full colour and black and white sketches, as well as reproductions of statues and paintings. It is an excellent book for the casual costume designer, though a serious historical re-enactor would need something that provides greater detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool glimpse into the past, relavent to today
This book offers a revealing glimpse into our commercial culture of consumerism as it was just getting started 120 years ago.It is amazing the things you could buy in 1886! Medicines were marketed to meet every possible insecurity or physical shortcoming. The sale ads are just as persuasive as they are today. A five dollar watch for three dollars! We often do not realize how influential the culture of this era, the Victorian era, was on how we live today.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you're studying fashion this is a five star book
I was slightly disappointed with this catalog. I was hoping for more house wares (dishes, sewing machines, porcelain ware etc.) and the prices for these items

5-0 out of 5 stars Most complete instructions for Victorian/Edwardian period sewing techniques
I make reproductions costumes for our NYS Historic Preservation Costume Department.I have been trying without success to find an authentic 1885 Norfolk Suit and knickerbockers to replicate for a boy aged 8 years old. This wonderful sewing manual had a detailed description of both.Although it was written in 1905, the sewing techniques have been the same for many, many years. This manual is my most treasured for authentic techniques of the Victorian/Edwardian era.

5-0 out of 5 stars A needlecraft treasury spanning nearly three hundred years
Quilts In America is a needlecraft treasury spanning nearly three hundred years of quilt history, techniques, patterns, and styles since America's colonial roots. Black-and-white and color plates illustrate a wide variety of historic quilts, while chapters discuss the evolution of quilts as both a practical craft and as folk art. Co-written by the director of the Textile Conservation Workshop in South Salem, New York, a nonprofit regional conservation laboratory devoted to rare and fragile textiles, Quilts In America is both an enlightening read and a reverberating experience especially for quilt lovers everywhere, and the vintage designs in the plates will prove inspirational for anyone interested in creating new quilts in historic American styles.

3-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile addition to other texts
Now dated, this 1926 publication is still worth using in conjunction with other texts. Granted some of this work has since been shown to be inaccurate by more recent scholarship. Furthermore his attitudes and observations are not only dated and politically incorrect, in the context of the 21st Century could also be considered racist. That said, Norris' body of work deserves our respect as being equaled by few of his generation (and surpassed by none). He has also proved to be a stepping-stone for future costumes historians - just check out the bibliographies of some important costume history texts and see how many reference Norris.4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for Dark Ages costumes
Too many costume books seem to skip from Byzantium straight to the Renaissance. This book is a reasonably good source for the Dark Ages -- not just Celts and Normans, either; it has info on Goths, Saxons (continental and British), Vandals, and a whole bunch of tribes that usually get either forgotten or lumped together as "barbarians."Another reviewer has noted that it's somewhat outdated, but it's a good idea book for an experienced costumer, especially for accessories (boots, jewelry & the like.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Outmoded and Often Inaccurate
Of all the Herbert Norris books I have read, this one suffers the most from his preconceptions and inaccuracies. It is also the one that has suffered most from the passage of time, as subsequent archaeologicalresearch has revealed errors in what was, in Norris's day,"factual" information about costume. The best thing about hisbook, in my opinion, is the meticulous line drawings of brooches and otheritems of period jewelry, but again, more recently published works containexcellent, full-color photographs of the same or similar specimens.Readthis book if you enjoy Norris's style, but do not accept anything in itblindly as much of it is plain wrong. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars gives some overwiev but is not for the serious student
This book may give some overwiev of the history of hats but it is not to be recomended for serious studies of costume history.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hats in History
This is a rather scholarly work on the history of hats covering the past two thousand years. The arrangement is chronological, by century. If one's interest is identifying or organizing headdress by country of origin, this book is particularly useful as the illustrations include the country where the hat was worn along with the drawing. I am always impressed when the same author does a book's text and illustrations, as is the case with this work (see Sibley's bird book if you really want to be blown away).

3-0 out of 5 stars Headwear history
This book has alot of printed information in it. A great deal of history. If you are looking for a book to teach you how to make head wear and hats then this isn't the book you need. However for a historical aspect I reccomend it, as long as you can visualise the written word. Its an ok book, not great but not the worst either. I bought it expecting it to contain more practical information, so from that point of view I was disapointed. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Adds Little To The Knowledge of Fabric Creation and Usage
I have been in the textile industry going on 30 years now, and I bought this book in hopes of, perhaps, learning about the creation of certain fabrics and their application within several industries. After reading through a mini-biography of the owner of the fabrics (who evidently was "somebody" in the industry but who I never heard of), I saw photos of different types of fabric with no analysis or application information attached.I have to agree with the earlier reviewer who states that it appears that this is nothing more than a collection of fabrics that perhaps were gathered up and photographed to create a publishable book. It's certainly not large enough to be considered a pretty "table" book, and it doesn't contain much in the way of technical information.Given the opportunity to go back in time, I would pass on this one in favor of the more popular and well-known publishers on textiles.

5-0 out of 5 stars thoroughly covered material
I used this textbook in a college course called Survey of the Fashion Industry. The text covers all aspects of merchandising, with a strong focus on fashion design (entire chapters on textiles, etc). Good photos and lots of material!
