Designs of a Decade
This is one of my favorite Tom Tierney paper doll books.The dolls look as if they've stepped straight from a 1950-s magazine, and the outfits are beautifully drawn.The detail is especially lovely on the lace gowns and the colors throughout are superb.

ancient egyptian fashions
ancient egyptian fashions by tom tierney is a great book. in this book you will see what old kingdom pharaoh's and their wifes dressed in, as well as princess's, scribes, painter's, egyptian couples of rank, dancer's, and women. you will also see middle kingdom pharaoh's and queen's, men and women, maidservant's from the court, dancer's and slaves. you will also see new kingdom pharaoh's including hatshepsut the female pharaoh, you will see queen's, noble couples, priest's, soldier's, court musicians, musicians, and a princess and a slave. you will also see gods like osiris, thoth,anubis, and amun. you will see the hair styles of ancient egypt as well. this is a great book on ancient egyptian fashions.

Inadequate details
This book is a reproduction of the 1907 book "Costumes of All Nations" (3rd edition), which in turn was reproduced from a series of plates produced by Braun and Schneider in "Zur Geschichte der Kostume" between 1861 and 1890.Unfortunately, in the process, all of the text (both the German and English) was removed (as was the color).So we have no way of knowing what went along with these drawings. No-no-no-no!
If you are interested in the proper history of costume, this book is not for you. It was created in the 19th century, when costume history was at its beginning and it reflects all major faults of the researchers of that time. Many things, claimed to be true at that time, are now proven to be completely wrong. Personally, I have found some blunders in this book. So, if you want to do a thorough and accurate research for your costume, refer to the modern researchers, authentic paintings and manuscripts. Definitely not this book. It is like using 14th century manuscripts for studying modern English. Useful for its type
If you're a serious student of costume history, this book is not for you.But if you're a beginning re-enactor, or you work with them, it's an excellent source for getting the "feel" of a period.It is typically Victorian in line, as are many similar books still in print.BUT it's comprehensive through many time periods, shows accessories well (which a lot of similar books do not), and makes for a good beginning point.Read more

--An entertaining and beautiful book--

fantastic/inspiring
I have lots of fashion books and this is one of my favorites just for the illustrations. There is very little text, but again if you want fun and inspiring illustrations this book is the best. I personally like these little drawings better than even Erte's illustrations.

A good book with some flaws...
Yes this is a good book that captures the general feel of the time-periods.However, as an owner of said book, I must point out that more than a few fashions are repeated in the "years/chapters".This gives the book a clip-art feel and detracts, somewhat, from the over-all quality.The book is all in straight Black & White and some people might be put off by this but it preserves the charm of the periods the book aims to capture.So I say this is a fair purchase for those interested in 20's art and not too obsessed whith graphics.

Kabuki Paper Dolls
The paper dolls in this book are colorful and quite accurate and are a good buy for anyone who collects paper dolls or is interested in Kabuki theatre. However, I felt there could be more costumes and more variety. The paper is also very light and thin and somewhat impractical if you wish to cut out the costumes.

Pleasing Paper
Ming-Ju Sun has created a lovely collection of kabuki outfits, each one with the name of the character, play it is from, and style of play, from historical drama to musical.The inside of the covers also contains history and information on kabuki and kabuki actors.I recommend this for Ming-Ju Sun fans and kabuki fans, and those who love to collect beautiful paper dolls.

Great Costumes.....
The kabuki costumes are very colorful and wonderfully drawn.There are 8 female costumes and 8 male costumes.The dolls are made of thicker paper, found on the flap of the back cover.Even though it defeats the point of having paper dolls, I found that I rather liked keeping the costumes uncut and left in the book.I use this book for reference, given the handy short descriptions on the side.The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was because I've seen better work from Ming-Ju Sun.I recommend Ming-Ju Sun's "Japanese Kimono."This book has 26 costumes, more detailed with better color, and the whole book is done on thick paper.The paper for the Kabuki Costumes was much thinner and would most likely not endure prolonged handling.Both books are the same price but I believe you get a better deal with "Japanese Kimono." ... Staple for designers
I am thrilled with this book. It is clear, concise, and thorough. I'm totally excited to make all the slopers to begin creating my own library of designs. Content-wise the only drawbacks is that it's mostly based on standard form sizes. They do give directions about how to measure the body and the drafting itself is pretty simply explained so either measurements can be used. Also, there aren't instructions about collars or cuffs or button/zipper extensions which, granted, are not really necessarily drafted by measurements. But you do need a supplemental Flat pattern making book for those items.
Simple, easy to understand but expensive for what you get
This book offers the most basic (and some selected not so basic) patterns such as the front and back bodice, the sleeve, and the skirt draft.If you are already familiar with fashion design, you know that from those 4 drafts, you can go on to produce anywhere from coats to pants. An excellent resource!
My benefits included basic instructions regarding sleeve cap design, and detailed instruction on taking accurate measurements.I've added this book to my most available resources in my office, and refer to it frequently inthe course of designing my own patterns and "fixing" commerciallyprinted ones. ... The best on the subject
I've bought, read, or browsed through many books on this subject. Granick's book on Amish quilts is the most comprehensive and fascinating I've seen.A delight to read. A delight to the eyes. I recommend it highly.

A 5 star read
I highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in Amish quilts.The pictures are gorgeous and the historical text is fascinating. I bought an antique quilt 2 years ago and was told it came from a farm auction in an Amish community in Iowa.As it is a double wedding ring pattern with a multitude of small print calicos and pink backing I dismissed the idea that it was of Amish origin.However, after reading about quilts from Iowa and their use of patterned fabrics I am thrilled to think that it probably is Amish. A great history!
Not ony does Eve Wheatcroft Granick walk through the evolution of the Amish quilt, she also helps the reader grasp Amish heritage and culture.I would highly recommend this book! ... Read more
