5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work on the history of toys
While serious toy collectors may wish for more detail on the individual toys themselves, the book is nonetheless a well crafted look at the social history of toys. The book allows the reader to reflect on the important role that toys have played throughout history.Everyone has at some point played and owned toys of some sort, but how many of us have ever stopped to think about the social constructions of the toys themselves?Well researched and interesting throughout, McClary's book presents the reader with the opportunity to examine the social influences that impacted the toys loved by our parents, our kids and even ourselves.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so scholarly
I found the book to lack a great deal in scholarship.Toys which were illustrated were often not identified by name or manufacturer where such are well known. It is the manufactured toys that are of greatest interest to collectors. The American heyday of toys starts after the Civil War and continues to WWII.European toys enjoy their greatest success during the same time period although automata were made much earlier.Japanese toys gain their popularity after WWII.The book falls outside of the main stream as far as serious toy collectors are concerned.Tops and stick toys have their place but do not compare with the wonderful cast iron toys made in the US by Hubley, Stevens or Gong Bell or the celebration of tin toys of Germany made by Lehmann or Gunthermann to name just a few of the toy manufacturers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so scholarly and a bit disappointing
The book turns out to be less than the scholarly tome I was expecting. This is due much to the fact that the footnote references while numbered are missing. It is also difficult to determine which references are relevant to what is being talked about. Major toy manufacturers are not identified for mass produced toys and their names are not given. As an example take the "Landing of Columbus" mechanical bank. It is called the Columbus bank and the manufacturer is not given. These oversights are serious enough to greatly diminish the works value for the serious and advanced collector. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book with excellent explanations
There is one aspect of this book that makes it extra valuable: Scott Robertson. Not only is he a master in perspective drawing. What makes Scott stand out is his ability to explain this in simple exercises and make you want to practise and understand. The simple texts and exercises are given a nice touch with excellent corresponding drawings. Great value for money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This has to be the worst price guide I have ever seen. Forget about the values not even being close, the Ertl listing has so many errors its pathetic. Several of the cars listed are 1/43, Not 1/18, and are listed as 1/18, colors listed that were never made it goes on and on.
2-0 out of 5 stars Standard guide to 1:18 Scale die-cast cars
After waiting for more than 9 months to get this book I was very disappointed after using Cast-car publication by Dan Boyd. The descriptions were very short and in most cases uninformative.I looked up 20 cars immediately from Ertl, Exact detail for Lane, Carousel, and Burago and Supercars (NO AutoArt) only to find 6 out of 20 and these are olderthan 2001 and could not be found.Very disappointing. All models did not have photos as Cast-Car Publications and the descriptions and details are sketchy or non existent, which is one of the values of the Cast-Car Publication. It does have more 1:18 scale models than any other Manual at this time and the $ VALUESthat were assigned I found to be from a little low to extremely low even for an eBay auction. Some of the values assigned to very limited edition cars that even by todays standards are rare or hard to find are lower than what they sold new for and are bringing more than the values given to them in this publication. For example 1969 Grumpy's Toy Camaro SSC, 1969 Yenko Nova #1 Issue, Yenko Camaros #'s 1 & #2 are all listed at a ridiculous $60.00, the GMP Grumpys Toy Nova is also listed at $60.00, and Lanes 1967 Grumpy's Toy is listed as a $60.00 value.I WOULD BUY ANY OF THESE AT THE VALUE STATED IN THIS GUIDE AS MANY AS I COULD GET MY HANDS ON AND MAKE GREAT MARK-UP.WHERE DID THEY GET THESE VALUES???These are only a few of the many glaring errors I found in an initial 30 minute review. Except for photos in the guide I found it exteremely lacking in why I made the purchase. I'm patiently waiting for the next issue of Cast-carwhich will include many moremanufacturers than just Ertl. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, colorful, informative book!
I didn't want to wait the 2-3 weeks to receive this, so I purchased it from one of the secondary sellers listed in the Amazonad page and got a wonderful NEW book for under $20.00! Paging thru this fun nostalgic book is just like Christmas morning for any baby boomer who was a little girl waiting for Santa in the 1940's thru 1960's.....also has some 1970's dollhouses and furniture. 3-0 out of 5 stars Size makes this book handy.
This books size makes it convenient to carry around to garage sales or toy shows. But the content could be better, some dolls are depicted with inaccurate prices and some vintage doll's aren't pictured in their proper outfits with proper accessories. So this can become confusing for the beginner collector. However there are "warnings"listed with some vintage outfits stating that Mattel has made a reproduction (these are worth far less) of it. This is a great feature if you are not a Barbie expert. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great things come in small packages
What a wonderful book! The Warman's Barbie Doll Field Guide is packed with useful information and great color photographs. And all at a super affordable price. I'm impressed. The book is designed as a take-along pocket guide, yet it's amazingly complete and thorough. It covers six decades of Barbie dolls, provides several hundred color photographs, a history of Barbie, critical identification information,-- including how to identify Barbie No. 1 -- fashion sets, designer dolls and a price guide to more than 1,500 dolls. It's perfect for a gift or for yourself, or even as a gift for yourself. I have several Barbie books on my shelves, and that's where they stay. But this little dynamo is never going to leave my side.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's so small
First thought upon getting this, it's tiny! I've been waiting at least two months for this book to come out and I was a tad upset that the price guide is not up-to-date. NOTHING that came out in 2002 is in there, nor are any non-collector dolls listed. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but numerous mistakes
Mr. Vossler's task was daunting:list all the variations of John Deere toys that are known to exist, associate nearly 1400 photographs with the individual toy, and set a value range for each item. The value range for most toys is appropriate.Unfortunately, several listings are duplicates and nearly one photograph per page does not match the description. This book needed to be reviewed by one of the many collectors knowledgeable on John Deere toys before being published.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice GENERAL overview of Star Wars Collectables
Overall, I'd give this book very good rating (three-and-a-half stars... but I rounded up to 4).It was fun to flip through, and includes a nice sample of full color pictures (including several that may be difficult to find elsewhere). It also shows you a sample of items from a wide variety of categories. It is very heavy on figures (a plus), and also covers a wide variety of other items including plush toys, glasses/mugs, games, cereal boxes, cards, comics, and even stained glass sun catchers. However, the book is not exhaustive/comprehensive in any one area. For example, it doesn't show you every vintage figure ever made... or the various card variation.Nor does it show you every vehicle or playset ever made... or their boxes. The same is true for comics, cards, etc..Further, there is NOT a lot of information/text/description.Finally, there is a picture of a 1977 Luke figure with a BLUE light saber very early on in the book (this really bugged me, and unfortunately made me question the accuracy of some of the other pictures).Overall, this book provides a nice overview ofStar Wars collectables (i.e., if you want to know a little about everything, this may be the book for you).It would also be a good backup book if you already have a good primary source on a given area. However, this book is not for the person who wants in-depth information/photos from any one area (i.e., if you want to know a lot about JUST cards, comics, or figures, there are probably other books you might consider buying first).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I really should not review this book because most of the stuff photographed in it is mine. But I saw this book and loved it so I will share a little bit with you. This is a really great book with a largevarity of Star Wars Toys and other Star Wars items. The pictures are allin color and very large.Every toy with the exception of 4 from theoriginal Kenner 3 3/4 line are displayed in the book. Most toys from thenew line are displayed also, along with everything from cereal boxes to thecommand tower swing set. This is a great book to use as a referance forcollectors new and old.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete; a disappointment
On coffee table books such as this I usually borrow a copy from my local library before I lay down 30-plus dollars at my high street stockist (hobby shop, Yank). It's a good thing that I followed my usual pattern with "Remembering Revell..." since the book covers only US-based operations during the period 1952-1979. Revell's sizeable, more profitable and argueably more interesting UK, West German, Mexican (Lodela) and Japanese design and manufaturing operations are virtually ignored. The UK shop does get some ink but it is primarily spent criticizing the British tool and die makers. To be accurate the book should have been titled something like "US Revell Models 1952-1979".
5-0 out of 5 stars Plastic Fantastic Age
This book takes a look at the history of Revell in its heyday of the 1950s to the 1970s.The book looks at the development of everything from the kit itself to the artists who drew the box tops which drove me nuts because I could never even come close tomaking the model like what was on the box top.Read more

Keep an eye out next time you're rooting around in your attic. 4-0 out of 5 stars "Fast Food Toys" is a must-have for collectors
Nearly every toy listed in "Fast Food Toys" has a photo with it! I find this to be a necessity that other toy collecting books lack. There is a great selection of modern McDonald's toys as well as toys from otherfast food franchises. My only wish is that Pope and Keith would haveincluded pre-1980s toys. ... Read more

An outstanding book for dollhouse collectors.Toy Buildings is a must for any collector with interest from Bliss to Converse to Keystone buildings. This book is not limited to dollhouse, but covers a wide variety of toy buildings, many that my brother had.It is an excellent refernce for history of manufactures to present day values for many toy buildings of this era.The color photos are of high quality and does an outstanding job of detailing many old toy building. Most dollhouse collectors have accumulated many Mystery buildings, this book is very useful in unraveling these Mysteries.Written by two excellent collectors, who have written several dollhouse books, this book offers new photos and information on houses and buildings not discussed in past publications.I am a collector of over 25 years and am very glad that I have added this outstanding book to my library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars COMPACT, CARRY ALONG BOOK
The Warman's G.I. Joe Field Guide is not a comprehensive, all-encompassing guide to G.I. Joe figures.Writer Karen O' Brien makes this clear in the introduction.Rather, this small (5" by 4") book serves as a convenient, pocket guide to G.I.
